Came here to research installing a winshield out of necessity for needing to do this myself..... and Not only did I get the bare bones, my way of working, type of knowledge i was searching for. Case in point, my mother reason that she knew how to use a circular handsaw so why not renovate an old home. Two years later every room in the house was re-done and absolutely beautiful. She didn’t know what she was doing, but she knew how to use a saw and decided everything else was comparatively challenging and that she could do it and then she did. She was 47 years old when she did it.

I personally would never attempt to do a windshield because of the risk of doing it wrong and how vital they are to integrity of my car and the SRS system. Kudos to you for not being a sissy. Someone shot my back windscreen out and I'm changing it myself. The glass shops wanted $375 parts and labor. My insurance is $500 deductible. I'm disabled and it'll take me a bunch of days but all I got is time.

You're right about studying and researching. Before I changed my clutch I was thinking there was no way i'd be able to do it myself. After a good week of watching how-to videos, doing some research, watching more how-to videos over and over a few times, I had the confidence to go at it, unfortunately parts place gave me the wrong pressure plate, so after it was all back together it made a horrible noise. You just gotta keep going, don't fall into dispair because something doesn't go right, there is always an answer, do it again, if you have to take a break, do it for a couple days. I was exhausted after pulling my transmission twice in 3 days I needed a couple days. I was down to my last $18 and had called off 3 extra days of work, but I took it apart again, replaced with the right parts and we're good to go, did it right in the driveway, all hand tools, become pretty good at it too, can pull a civic transmission in about 2 hours now. Never give up.

I seen an old black dude use a wire. He had all the glass out of Suburban in 45 mins. With zero adhesive on them. I learned talking to him afterwards. You also need to use automotive adhesive to put them back in. Just ask any retail body shop for it. As it' snot worth getting all the wind noise. Water Damage and rust... It's only $25.00 for the 3M stuff....
And get the primer. It prevents rust and makes the best seal....
I'm learning this trade from my father & watching this video was pretty funny. have a huge admiration for your work ethic bro, we need more people like you! all these negative comments don't understand when you said it's an amateur job, and I've seen over a 100 windshield installations and you're not very far off from doing it professionally. stay positive !!
i'm a windshield tech that swaps several a day professionally and want to say two things:
1. From what I can tell in the video the result should be nice and tight and safe as if i'd have done it. I don't see any red flags.
2: Only things I would have done different are certain specialized tools that are only worth investing in if you swap a lot of windshields.

Ive replaced 7 to 10 automobile windsheilds a day for 17 years and just enjoy watching how others do it👍 thanks for sharing cause I don't even have a video.
I was a professional glass installer for a couple of years, and it was kind of funny watching you struggle with removing the windshield. you were lucky not to crack the second windshield from using the cold knife (or as you call it the puller). normally it is done with a wire which is easier and you do not have to clean all that extra urethane from around the windshield. As most people and you have said silicon should not be used, either use (poly)urethane or buytl caulking or tape (Buytl tape was used before urethane). glass installers use a simillar tool to your reciprocating saw, so it was nice to see you use that. when installing the windshield if you watch when you are putting it in to see if you can see the VIN through the spot on the windshield, that is the way to line it up and make sure it is centered. You were lucky with that Honda, that the moulding was part of the glass, most Honda's and VW's have these funky clips that hold the side mouldings on, and they are a pain in the arse ( because the usually break because they are old and brittle) Nice Job though!

Your video gave me the inspiration to do this myself! I successfully removed a window like you from the junkyard, now I just need to remove my old one and pop it in! I used nothing but piano wire to get the new windshield off. Thanks for the helpful video! I will post my progress when I can on my channel! :)

You did great for a first timer. I love watching your vids because you show what can be done with ordinary tools and a little thought. Not to nitpick but use urethane sealant on the next one for strength. You saw how hard it was to remove the glass with the urethane. It's like that to keep the glass from popping out in an accident. Love your vids though man. Your not afraid to dive in and see what happens. And failure isn't an option in your eyes. If that's not inspirational, I don't know what is!

Enjoy your videos... resurfaced the head on my nissan 2.5l and using copper coat got the new multilayer steel head gasket on.. runs like a champ. Your videos are always very interesting and informative. Lots of cars get written off if the windscreen is damaged because the big glass replacement companies charge so much, it's cheaper to buy another. I was told bonded windscreens were too difficult to replace by yourself but your video shows that with determination and patience, it can be done. Excellent to see it is possible and can save people a great deal of money if they give it a go!
A friend and I pulled the back window out of an old Cadillac Seville, we punctured a hole into the glue and slipped guitar string through and sawed it out that way. It was a pain but not too bad, we managed to pull out two in an afternoon (first one shattered just as we were about done because my friend decided to try to pry the last bit of glue up with a flat head screwdriver...) I really like the re-purposed saw blade though!
Hey i work at a factory that puts the molding and bond promoter(primer) on car windows. If you want to take the primer off i suggest you try using alcohol that works most of the time.

Great video. I learned the exact way you just did. I bought a tool and went to the auto wreckers. 5 windshields later I had one. The blade/sawzall is definitely the way to go.
I respect your reply. What do you use when glueing in windshields???? I have a couple square body Ford F series that need new ones. Just wandering if RTV will bond to the rubber stuff used from the factory? I know if it has enough to spread out to the paint it would bond but the F series Ford trucks use the clips to hold the molding around the windshield and that would interfere with them.
@@coburnlowman it’s a black urethane for windshield. It’s the most expensive parts. Which if you don’t have many cars to do you’ll use silicone like him with idk how long that will hold. But black urethane is key.

@@coburnlowman 3M urethane, part #8609 if I'm not mistaken, check an auto paint supply store, or give your local parts store the 3M part number, should come in a tube like window caulk

We used the camping wood cutting wire with a ring on each end. We cleared all around and a real good clean start spot. Fed the ring in then had a person on inside and Outside sawing this thin wire back and forth all around until it lifted free. Clean edges really well on the windshield and the car frame it's going into. Really clean.

Nice video Oldskool with lots of detail, especially to the removal and installation of the windshield. Looks like the utility knife and homemade sawzall blade is the way to go. You could have never shown the first part of this video and no one would have ever know about the cracked windshield. i am going to give you a tip get galvanized thin steel wire and a knife, inset the wire from outside in to the windshield rap it around on 2 screw driver handles and use a back and forth motion around the windshield kinda like when you dental floss a string in between your teeth same way use the steel wire in between the windshield pulling the wire towards you all around the windshield comes right off

Oldskool, I notice that the windshield you took out said 'honda' on it. I recommend that if anybody is going to go through all the effort to remove a windshield, always choose the honda oem if you can. Honda oem glass is just better and more durable than after market stuff. Plus, honda stuff fits perfect every time. There is a place in the Bronx NY called 'randall ave glass' and they used to replace the windshield in my 87 accord for $85 including labor and the glass. Plus, they do it while you wait and they are very fast. They did the side glass on my friend's 95 accord for $30. The prices are so low because in the Hunts Point area of the bronx, there are dozens of glass places so the prices get driven down. My buddy said this glass place wanted $240 so I took him to Randalls glass and got it for $30.
By the way, If the wire you used broke, try to use a bicycle derailleur cable. A bicycle brake cable is a little bit thicker but the derailleur cable is super strong and thin and it is stranded steel cable. You might also want to spray some silicone on the cable so it cuts smoother. You can get the cable for a couple of bucks at walmart or any bicycle shop.

After market glass usually will have a wave to it however that could happen with oem as well second you shouldn’t be using silicone spray or silicone caulking silicone caulking is what you use for glazing residential window and you should use poly urethane for installing residential windows or for sealing commercial storefronts for cars you need automotive urethane and primer silicone caulk doesn’t have the strength for windshields there a ton of reasons not to use silicone they sell piano wire with handles to wire out a windshield the old school way honestly I feel like a little better direction and tools and it probably wouldn’t have been so bad the cold knife or “pull tool” you had they make different blade sizes and you probably could have got it out with just that maybe a little bigger blade for it or possibly a pipe knife and a hook tool would have done wonders not judging any ones work not my car or my install just something to help the next guy

My friend good work. I am sure one of the experts here have told you about using an old guitar string...so easy to remove old glass. Ive done it before but wanted a refresher course. Im getting ready to install one again for a friend.
My comment is toward the silicone "experts". Rest assured that that windshield will last forever. Silicone is incredibly strong, and will not "fall out" That is ridiculous. Is urethane the way to go? Absolutely! But, making the guy out to be an idiot, or insinuating that he is spreading dangerous videos is just stupid.
There are are also many types of silicone. ALL will work, while some are better for different apps. In essence, the main difference between urethane and silicone is the hardener.
Now, I know this because I am a carpenter. I understand that its not the same as some fancy edumicated auto techie. But Ive installed windows in homes, counter tops, sinks, mirrors, about anything you can think of using silicone. And I can tell you that 90 percent of the time you will destroy the part before it "falls out". You must have an even bead, and you get a pounds per square inch concept that is very strong.
If you apply a nice 1 inch wide bead around your windshield it will NOT fall out. It will NOT leak.

this is funny im a glass guy i understand you low on funds or dont have the insurance coverage, but please be safe when it comes to auto glass who ever in your vehicle including your life depends on it. its more to auto glass then taking it out and putting it in. please people if you not sure call a glass shop and ask questions but if possible take it to a glass company or a true glass person where things are guaranteed.

i loved watching your video. I'm a professional automotive glass installer for the last 13 years and i came across this by accident,but all said and done for your 1st time you did a not bad job. yes silicone was a bad choice and your cold knife is one of the best tools to remove a windshield once you learn the way to do it. by the end of the video i wanted to teach you how to do a windshield just for your future knowledge. good on you for handling it, its really super simple to do this once you do 2 or 3..........hundred . thanks for the video

Thanks so much for the video. It was a great encouragement and greatly helped get my '99 Civic back on the road (tree branch from the Hurricane Matthew wind took out my back glass last weekend). Anyhow, Pull-a-part had the rear windshield for $22.22. Prior to that, I got the suction cup gizmos from H.Freight along with the windshield removal tool. Those parts totaled about $23.10 w/ the twenty percent off coupon and coupon for free batteries. We got the caulk gun from O'Reilly (about 11 bucks but good caulk gun I plan to reuse many times in the future). Got the 3M Window Weld Cement from another place. I'm going to order it online next time or shop around to get a better price on that...kindof gave in and paid the higher price to get it done today so can drive the car tomorrow. Already had tape and used a Tractor Supply tactical hunting/survival knife instead of a box cutter to clean up the old urethane--more leverage. Switched over to a paring knife that Mom had which worked even better. When all was said and done, the total was just over $85 for everything and the install turned out perfectly! Add another $10 for Wendy's Jr. Bacon Cheeseburgers purchased for the parents as a thank you for helping vacuum out the glass and letting me use their car/yard to get the stuff and helping put the windshield in place and clean out the trim and all. Anyways, I was skeptical about how this would turn out lol but the Good Lord worked it all out and I'm glad I did like you suggested and give it a try, not get frustrated, break it down, believe I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me and has saved my soul, and to handle it and not be defeated! Also, I would like to point out that many people would have edited out the part about the one windshield getting broken the first time, but I want to say thanks for leaving it since I already had ended up buying that same tool and managed to get the windshield out in one piece but almost didn't. When I first stuck the cutting tool in there I just about turned it that same way and if Mom hadn't shown me your video I probably would've broken it! Thanks again!
