@14:37 "dumb" is an archaic English word for mute. It's not used very frequently anymore. Although occasionally someone might say "he was struck dumb" = "shocked speachless." She's not calling the servant stupid here.
I love this movie. So much atmosphere and tension throughout it and then that HUGE twist at the end. It's just well done.

    • @jrasicmark1
      @jrasicmark1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thanks, I was going to say the same. People probably started using it as slang for unintelligent, because, often when someone's child was born deaf and mute (and they were mute only because they couldn't hear to mimic and learn speech) they often just assumed they were unintelligent. The movie, "A Miracle Worker" is a good example; it's the true story of the teacher who taught Helen Keller. Her family literally thought she was too stupid to learn anything.
Eventually, the slang became so widely known and popular in usage, many forgot the original meaning.
Words for people with intellectual disabilities have a similar history. The words, idiot, imbecile, moron, and even retarded (which devolved into the insult "retard") started out as medical terms used by doctors and psychiatrists. Then they started to be used as slang and people forgot the original meaning. "Retarded" was created to replace all the previous words that had been lost to slang, until it too was replaced by "retard" so it also fell out of use by the medical community. Now they tend to use intellectual disability.
(Timothy probably know all this already, so this is more directed to anyone who may not know it yet.)

Spooky horror movies with a twist became something of a trend after The Sixth Sense (2 years before this). Most of them had awful twists, that didn't work very well or seemed written in at the last minute just to include a twist. Of the films that followed The Sixth Sense trend, this was by far the most effective. Still gets the hair up on my neck, if I rewatch it now, when the twist comes.

    • @dannyjorde2677

Actually, the script of The Others was written years before the sixth sense came out. It was supposed to be released first, but it couldn't unfortunately. Then The Sixth Sense took all the credit for a twist that was already planned for this movie.

The Scene with the father always makes me sad.
A soldier who died on the battlefield and whose soul is now bound to this place. His wife went through the fog and found him and brought him home. But he can't stay there, he has to go back to the battlefield, to the place where he died... I was a soldier for 12 years and also lost comrades, this thought that the film shows always makes me very sad...

I think that's what makes this movie not that scary but sad actually. It's sad for all of them, especially for the ones left behind, the wife and the children.
There was hope and happiness when the father came back and they were a whole family again. And then when he leaves, it's just darkness and gloominess again for all of them.

@hinzkunz8227 . Regardless of what nation you served, I honor and respect your service. I did not have the privilege to serve but I have always been curious about why soldiers who died on a battlefield must remain on the battlefield. Are the ghosts found on the site of a battlefield truly the souls of soldiers still interacting with the living? Or are they just an emotional recording of fear, anger, and or sadness that were recorded here on that field and the souls of the soldiers just went on to find peace.

Per your remark around the 2:38 minute mark, the 'shed' in an estate like this, would be basically a separate guest-house with it's own rooms, kitchen, bathroom etc. Also, why would a single mother living with her two young children, just agree to let 3 grown adults STRANGERS that she literally only just met for the first time, stay in the same house with her minor children? lol

I’m so glad you finally watched this. In my opinion, this is one of the best horror films of the 21st century, so far. Also, there’s a subtle reference to their already being dead that many people seem to miss. It happens twice in the film. They’re both similar instances at different moments. When the mother tells her daughter to “stop breathing like that” twice, then says simply “stop breathing”. It’s said by the daughter to her brother before they’re caught, as well.

14:27 Haha, actually, before "mute" was implemented, "dumb" originally meant "silent" and was the common term for those who do not speak - it had no reference to intellect. However, as we all know, that changed.
The term mute came later, perhaps because of the confusion from the word dumb being associated with ignorance and stupidity.
Even though it's not used anymore in that context, "dumb" is still a valid term for mute people.
Have you heard the etymology of the word "nice"? That's an interesting one.

When I first saw this, I was like you.
Think about this. When the family died, the servants summoned the authorities, who collected the bodies. Then the ghosts of the family reset as if it was just the next day.
The father wanted badly to get home, so willed himself there. He was horrified to find his wife & children were as dead as he was. He returned to the Front, where dead soldiers who're in denial are still fighting the war. This mention alludes to the observation that some battlegrounds seem to be haunted, with glimpses of long dead soldiers & sounds of battle. (I'm interested in paranormal investigations.)
The family seems to have been Catholic. The ritual of First Communion has something to do with girls as brides of Christ. Hence, the veil.

When I watched this film for the first time, a friend called me at the _exact_ moment that the old lady opens the closet - and of course the phone was lying right next to me! I thought I was about to have a heart attack, while my friend on the other end wondered why I was hyperventilating... 😯 Great film! It would have been a suspenseful, good film even without the "role reversal", but the twist made it even better! It's definitely one of the best ghost stories I've seen! I think that Nicole Kidman has an aristocratic air about her that makes her very suitable for roles like this one.
"The Others" is generally considered to be psychological horror, but psychological horror has a lot in common with psychological thrillers, and sometimes these genres overlap. Fear of the unknown - in this case ghosts - is more in line with horror, though. These kinds of films do not tend to rely on jump scares (which I don't find particularly scary at all), but in my opinion they tend to linger longer after you've seen them. They often also include mystery elements, much more so than typical slashers etc. Anyway, the slamming door certainly had an effect on you - I had to rewatch that part a couple of times! 😁
    Thanks for the reaction!

I loved your reaction as always Miss Bisscute 💓💓💓. It's a good movie with an unexpected twist. Recommendations for future reactions on Halloween: The Lost Boys, Under world Zaga (the first three movies are very good) Blade Vampire Hunter 1 and 2. Not horror movies as usual but are great Vampire Films.

Like sixth sense, fight club, and the village you have to re-watch the movie at some point. Completely different experience second time around.

I love your comments..bring the PRIEST …bring the whole CHURCH. That’s exactly what I’d do. Your comments are hilarious and relatable. I absolutely love listening to the Orthodox Church Hymns…they are beautiful. I use to own this MOVIE 🎥 and it’s the extent of any SCARY one I’ve ever owned. It’s exactly a SUSPENSE VS. SCARY. 🫣 🤷🏻‍♀️ Your Reaction is GREAT 👍🏽.

If you'd like to watch another great movie with Nicole Kidman, try "To Die For". Although the title may sound like another horror, it is actually a dark comedy. You'll love it!

Great movie. It was a big hit at the time but I never see it on anyone's list of the best modern horror movies. Except mine, of course. 😛

32:45 THERE IT IS!!! The reaction to the big reveal I was waiting for! 😀
Well.... You've seen The Sixth Sense... now you've seen The Others... the next big plot-twist thrillers I recommend to you :
    IDENTITY (2003)
    (Edward Norton, Amanda Peet)
    and
    PASSENGERS (2008) (Anne Hathaway)
These are not "haunted house" scary like The Others. They are more suspense like The Sixth Sense ; not a lot of jump-scares or any supernatural stuff of the occult persuasion.
You should be perfectly safe from injuring yourself, as you won't be getting the crap scared out of you, lol. Just huge plot twist reveals.
You're usually pretty shrewd at figuring things out in movies, I'd like to see if you can guess the ending before it is revealed on both of those titles. 😉

Hiya @bissflix 👋🏼🤗, for this upcoming Veteran’s Day in the USA, can you consider reacting to a movie “ THE OUTPOST” 🙏🏼. If you do, spoiler, have kleenex & you will make wrinkles😅. This movie is based on an actual battle happened in Afghanistan to a small company of US Army soldiers inside a valley surrounded by mountains. Two soldiers received the highest honor in combat (Medal of Honor), imo this film depicts how real soldiers in a combat environment really react with one another-because this was how my platoon really were; raw & unfiltered language, but no-hesitation will bleed together until our final round inside a magazine. Please consider🙏🏼, thnx!
