I know Mark said he got really angry over this list and that he's worried how it could impact everybody's Christmas in a negative way. Honestly, I think I can speak on behalf on all his fans that this absolutely won't be the case. For me, I'm actually really excited to see his Year-End lists for 2023 and I'm effectively 100% sure he'll tear apart and speak out about one particular song which is absolutely deserved given its dangerous message (we all know what it is). I'll say here what I said on Todd in the Shadows' video re: "Daylight"...
David Kushner can't sell "Daylight" because he hasn't put any genuine feeling behind it. Speaking from experience as someone who grew up in a rather extreme sect of Christianity, even the most sheltered and/or most devout religious people still angst pretty hard over a good piece of forbidden fruit.
Either ol Dave here is one of the few folks so godly that he's never truly experienced a sinful desire, or he's too much of a goody-two-shoes to allow himself to admit it without a heavy dose of sanitization.
Either way, "Daylight" just comes off as devoid of any actual emotion or drama. Lactose intolerant people have more genuine, interesting internal crises over a pint of Ben & Jerry's than whatever sin David Kushner is supposed to be singing about.

Gets a pass for me for this single reason. Jesus, this was the first year of pop music I truly felt disconnected to the majority of hits, and yet I hate to say I am glad that was the case. As much as I love the way in which pop music critics have been a part of my life through TH-cam, I also am glad I can still enjoy them without the sense of attachment I used to have with the charts.
2016 was the year I properly started following the charts closely thanks to billboard breakdown, and I will always be grateful to you Mark for that! But now as I prepare to get married in March and begin the next phase of my life, I don’t have the time or interest in following the charts as closely nowadays. Still, I will always look forward to the year-end lists like these and I do love the album review shorts, so please keep up the amazing work Mark!

You know, if the reaction against Try That IN A Small Town wasn't bad enough, look at how people reacted to that Oliver Anthony song Rich Men North of Richmond. That song should not have charted at all, or if it did, maybe something like 75 or 85, something like that, because the right-leaning crowd would embrace it, then it would disappear into the ether, never to be thought of again. But because all of the so-called progressives brought so much hate towards the song, that made it big as it became. So it's like they learned nothing from Try That In A Small Town, and made the same mistake with Rich Men North of Richmond.
If you think a song is so bad and reprehensible and doesn't deserve to be big, then don't share it publically with others and say "this song is shit, and I'm mad because it's about this." Just ignore the song, let it disappear into the ether.
Normally, I hate the don't like don't watch arguments, but in some ways, had the left have collectively just ignored both Try That In A Small Town and Rich Men North of Richmond, then maybe they wouldn't have made it as big as they did.
In othe rwords, those that hate the fact that both Try That In A Small Town and Rich Men North of Richmond made it to number 1, it's your own damn fault for pushing the hell out of those songs because you had to rage about it, share your rage, and over and over.
It's like why Rebecca Black made it as big as she did in 2011 with Friday, we all complained to everyone and our babas about it, and that made the song huge as it was.
Just like Friday, both Try That In a Small Town and Rich Men North of Richmond made it as big as they did because of how much people just had to rage over those songs. The left took the bate, and the right is now laughing all the way about this, just like how Patrice Wilson took all the hate we gave Friday all the way to the bank.

It is strange that the song never actually appeared in the "Idol" despite Sam Levinson's credit, which further supports the theory that the original show was supposed to take place in the early 2000s and be about a Britney-esque pop star, but that Sam and the Weeknd fucked it up

Honestly, among all the garbage of this year's hits (which among are the #1 spot which I will never acknowledge on name because it wants me to do that, and Morgan Wallen's Last Night which I consider my actual #1 since its the song that made me feel the most hollow and miserable listening to it. I have heard worse music, but the absolute numbness that song makes me feel is what makes it fucking putrid) I'm surprised you didn't mention one song that counts as some of the worst of this year...so I will
What It Is (Block Boy) by Doechii ft. Kodak Black:
    - You have talked a lot about how disappointment plays a lot in your perception of the worst hit songs you have heard, and this is the first time I think this has applied to me because holy shit. Doechii has become one of my favorite new artists in recent memory, and her EP from last year, "she/her/black bitch," is still a top 10 best musical projects of 2022- such an incredible first impression for me which made me go back to revisit all her music and see such a musical genius that balances swagger and compassion for her art and the muses of her songs, with bangers like Swamp Bitches with Rico nasty being top 10 best songs of 2022 material and songs from "Oh The Places You'll Go" genuenly making me tear up. Hell, this exact year she put out the song "Pacer" which is a terrific, bombastic piece of horrorcore rap which just makes me question...why.
Who told Doechii this song was a good idea and how fast does a rocket go to the sun? I honestly have heard more than one time the solo version of the song in question, and its utterly baffling to me. How do you make one of your most vivid and talented acts sound so lifeless and waste all her potential like this? I'll tell you how: you deprave her of showing that talent and leave her to a singing role despite her being A FUCKING RAPPER on a song that is so backwards on everything that came before to have a "thugs need love" song which-listen I'm not saying is a bad idea but more that she makes zero sense here given how commanding of a presence she is. She just ends up sounding like she's playing second fiddle on HER OWN SONG.
And the fact that she's playing second fiddle to Kodak Black...look I heard the version with Kodak once and it was more than enough to tell me how fucking ashamed TDE should be for pushing this instead of Persuasive as a single despite the recent success of afro-beat and dance music on the charts, and...you know...LITERALLY FEATURING SZA ON THE REMIX WHO IS ALSO ON TDE is inexcusable. I literally just checked right now and she released her previously amazing ep on TDE so why the fuck would you not? Shame on all of you.
And at this point do I even have to bring up the production? To be fair, that guitar is pulling a lot of work in making me like it...but like Crow (@CawCophony you should check them out they're great) mentioned during their worst hits of the 2010's video, why would I stand through the rest of a bad song for one aspect if the sum of its parts is way less than? The song is just incredibly flat it might as well be a fucking circle. It's incredibly dissapointing how one of the best new artists I heard recently had her debut on the charts fumbled this fucking bad due to honestly inexplicable musical choices, and I just hope that this is not her only hit cuz she deserves way, WAY better than she has right now.
(geebuz christ that's a lot of words)

    1. Im really happy you finally ditched the shitty Billboard format given how irrelevant they made themselves for inexplicable reasons (which might as well be the motto for why the music industries popular right now and the biggest artists right now do so many stupid shit.) Some pop chart followers and music commentators on youtube already do this and they just give a more profound view on what actually moved and was popular, so that's swell.

In a normal year, we're complaining about dumb lyrics or lazy samples or annoying vocals. This year, a lot of the stuff on the charts was downright offensive. NOT commenting on it kind of would be like stating we're accepting it and lead to even more of it. 29:39 I cannot explain what it is but this song is one of the few songs that make me unintentionally incredibly sad and depressed whenever it’s one the radio and these always have a spot on my worst lists. I almost wanted to even place it first on my worst list, because it’s the song that unintentionally took the most from me without ever giving anything in return. At the end It’s just a mid version of Take Me To Church that was played 12000000 times on the fucking radio. I mean I hate it but idk if it offends me enough to be my least fave of 2023 when songs like “Alone” by Kim Petras and “Try That In A Small Town” exist but it’s definitely up there or should I say down there, anyways it makes me upset without knowing why and I’ve only had this with YBMF before so that is kind off a reason to hate this more than songs that I have a solid, obvious and justified reason to be upset about when they’re played or isn’t it?
Ps: I’m German and mainly base these pick off logic (for Try That In A Small Town) and whatever bothered me the most while being exposed to local top 40 radio during my work shifts.
Ps, ps: I’m sorry if you do like to happen “Daylight” like I said I can’t explain my feelings when I listen to this song, I just know that it’s not helpful for me to listen to it and I therefore can’t help but dislike it but I’m fine if any of you like it.

I want to really badly make a longer piece on how I feel about the "pop music" landscape on 2023 and what is emblematic of but knowing me I would break my brain trying to balance that and actually writing about music I like which I'm still doing so Imma try to be thorough here:
2023 was the year that tried to tell you to give up
I don't think that I have seen a year in popular music that is more emblematic of how fucking awful the world, both inside and outside of pop music, is where the mask has been pulled off completely. The mask might have been pulled off many years ago (and really all of this seemed to be coming, god Jean Grae was right), but now it is impossible not to notice. Given how much of the worst music of this year showed a lack of interest in the artists, and honestly the industry at large, to have any sense of decency and respect for anyone or anything to the point where they can just be the worst pieces of shit imaginable and the masses won't care. Two possible reasons for that. 1: the affordmentioned rage bait that gets propped by dogshit actors that don't give a shit about the art as much to shit on it for easy clicks, which ends up making everything worse (the same people that think debating Ben Shapiro does anything instead of doing real work to make things better YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE). And 2: a mass audience that in the late-era-capitalism-hellmode world we live right now cannot fathom to change their consuming options and just want the same thing because fuck it. Just give up. This is what the popular music of this year made me feel, and honestly that's how 2023 made me feel in general. I really wanted to give up in every sense of the word on this year given how there is no mask anymore on how awful the nation I have to live in is, and how complacency and enablement are the words of now as the powerful give any passes to kill the marginalized in the many wars happening right now. It's all in plain sight...and many of us are incapable of doing shit. "When you're this rich... they just let you get away with it...y'know." But you know what, I'm with you Mark. I'm fucking tired, but more than that I'm fucking angry. At this point in my life I realize that anger is a powerful emotion that can do so much good. So we can do shit about it. Protest. Speak for those who can't. Make noise when they don't want you to. Don't stop. Never give up even if you fucking want so bad. Free Palestine. And Congo. And Sudan. Don't give up.

    9. I’m Good (Blue) - David Guetta & Bebe Rexha
    8. Rich Flex - Drake & 21 Savage
    7. One Thing at a Time - Morgan Wallen
    6. Search and Rescue - Drake
    5. Peaches and Eggplants - Young Nudy ft. 21 Savage
    4. Rich Men North of Richmond - Oliver Anthony Music
    3. Thinkin’ Bout Me - Morgan Wallen
    2. Under the Influence - Chris Brown
    1. Try That in a Small Town - Jason Aldean

Okay, "Young Nudy" is officially one of the weirdest and worst stage names I've heard in a LONG time.

Also, I will never get the hate for Daylight. Yeah, it's yet another depressing pop song but at least it sounds more interesting then 90 percent of pop piano ballads and at least the emotions he's trying to get across come through.

This song could've been good if it weren't for that murky faux-chamber-pop production. It feels too much like a bad crossover between some third-rate Bon Iver and Imagine Dragons.

      @thevarietychannelofyoutube4769 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@antoinemouthon6501 I like the production. It makes it sound more artsy then your average pop piano ballad and I enjoyed that.

@@thevarietychannelofyoutube4769 Sure it has something different from usual pop ballads, but it just doesn't work in my opinion. Anyway, I'm not going to dwell on this because you are entitled to your own opinion and I totally respect it.

    34. Need A Favor *5/10*
    42. Religiously *7/10*
    54. Wait In The Truck *10/10*

      why it's controversial?

    • @samanteater
      @samanteater ปีที่แล้ว

@@jeremyduminy7730A lot of people think it focuses more on playing into the male fantasy for violence than actually saying anything worth saying about domestic abuse. Personally, I understand why people think that, but I think the presence of a woman on the song keeps it from feeling too self-indulgent. It still doesn't hold a candle to any of the similar songs actually written by women though (Goodbye Earl, Blown Away, probably others)
