    In this video we replace the dreiver's seat springs in our W126.
    We added one inch of foam also to firm up the seat! With the stiffer springs and added foam, this seat now feels like it came from a much more modern car. We also disassemble the slide rails, removed corrosion, did some painting and lubed everything up nicely.

    Lucky me having a Mercedes 126 and finding your video. Exactly what I was looking for. Having to put a new driver seat cover on. Now, I will find the rest of your "excellent videos" on the 126.. Thank you very much..

    If you look at the 89+ seat spring frames, they are just about identical, except for some firm foam "tubes" that perfectly fit INSIDE the two coils at the front corners. Putting those foam pieces into the springs is one of the BEST "upgrades" you can do to these early, "pleated" W126 seats... Just FYI

      Before I read your comment I wrote that I was told one shop used rolls of toilet paper on my 89.I think the foam pieces might flex and return much better. My 86 is so spongy I bet adding them will really improve the support. Thanks for your input! Love those 126s. 2door and 4s.

    The parts rust because water leaks under the windshield wiper Cowl. A rubber plug in the corner near the drain on both sides disintegrates and allows water to get in into the passenger compartment. Also, the air-conditioning drain line under the center console carpet on the driver side is made out of foam and disintegrates and allows water into the foot well area with air conditioning use. I salvaged the rubber ends from the original tube and used a plastic tube with metal clamps holding the original rubber parts onto the new tube as a replacement drain line.

    • @Johnathan_Waters
      @Johnathan_Waters 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is the best explanation for this. However, in my experience I have seen cars that had intact drains/rubber and STILL had corrosion on those covers. I have a feeling it is most likely just due to them being in close proximity to the seat bolt holes, which are exposed to the elements on the underside of the car.
      Also, the seats are made from Natural coconut fibers I believe. They are completely soaked in some kind of latex glue.

    • @markgraham5796
      @markgraham5796 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Johnathan Waters that certainly contributes to the bolt corrosion. I really wanted to let all W126 owners know about those two leaks because they are two mystery leaks that I had to figure out on my own through great misery

      Impalaman's Garage that looks like a good one. Please check into those issues and while your at it, take the front bumper off and take the rubber strips off below each orange side marker light. They cause the fender to rust at that spot. Another consideration may be injecting clear marine grade caulk underneath the rear window seal. At the corners in the bottom the water sits internally and will rust through as well as make the trunk moldy, rusty, and damp

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ImpalamansGarage I removed the passenger seat on my Volvo once. I unbolted it and then pulled and pulled on it. It didn't budge. I accidentally pushed it forward and it let loose. They had put hooks in the miflddle of the tracks to hold it down. My back hurt for several days after that. I had wanted to take the seat switches off and have it tested. They were soldered on! I never could fix it. Never again will I take a seat off a car.

      Once again you taught us how to repair a common problem with these old cars. It would cost a lot to have it done at a shop. You are a great mechanic and do upholstery work, too. Thanks so much. Uou

    • @secondlooksformen3836
      @secondlooksformen3836 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I noticed cylinder-shaped objects standing up in your springs. I remember a guy at an upholstery shop telling me when they rebuilt seat bottoms they used some rolls of toilet paper. Seeing those objects in your seats is probably was what he was talking about.
      Do you think your springs could've been repaired? And by adding the foam pad would've been improved? Or were they too weak to be supportive enough?
      I appreciate how much you teach us.

    Another great video on your 126. Did you replace the springs or repair them? Years ago, when I first started collecting Mercedes Benz brochures 1972 I believe, one of the most inexpensive options were heavy duty reinforced seats springs. Having never seen these seats taken apart, I wonder if that is the position for that extra spring in frame that is missing on both your front seats. Someone else may know the answer to this missing piece.

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Confusing ain't it! LOL.... I did some head scratching myself. As I recall the two components are separate but they interact on the ends. Remember there are Philips screws and hex bolts as well that hold it all together on the seat frame. Also keep in mind that the slot in the gear rail rides along these two little stubby rods. See here. th-cam.com/video/0pijcs_-Fhk/w-d-xo.html

      From 3:55 to 4:07 in part 2 you can see where I am holding that assembly in my hand. It gives a pretty good shot of how the two interact with one another.

      Oh, I am my own hero. I had a spare drivers seat frane/spring in virgin condition. So I can simply emulate the exact setup. Turns out the 4 phillips do not capture the sliding rail. The rail travel is only limited by the "bump" stops.
