    Attention !
For begginers or for more precise work ,
just remove your old seats upholstery and unsew everything into pieces, so then you will have a completely precise pattern for your car seats. Then at the pattern you can design custom upholstery designs , and then you just have a little more job because it's custom design but if you want to change just fabric of seats this way it's a lot easier.

i did upholstery at a boat factory, then did custom boat upholstery. hard part is to learn to stitch straight. now i learned how to build a shoe/boot from scratch with 360 welts. i messed up a lot of shoes and boots before i made something worth wearing. glad i used cheap leathers. humans have the fastest muscle memory, we learn fast.

I was thinking of putting a steel plate with welded on nuts on the wood backing, (hides the stapling as well), then bolting that to my bomber seat. Would that work?

I would cut just through the foam leave a large hem in the center lay the cover over the seat foam then use Hog Rings underneath onto the Springs of the seat in the outer centers first no glue then pull material over the foam and Hog Ring the edges then attach the side covers. You said yours were custom every application is different! I would like to see someone do a solid headliner with a line around and just inside the outer edge. I have a 66 Charger Headliner I have to in Dark Blue suede. It has two line that are recessed and when I removed the material those lines are less prominent and now I need to add some foam to the soft fiberglass headliner board.
