  • Finally had a chance to test Lectron's Tesla to J1772 adapter and I definitely was impressed at how easy it connects and works right out of the box.

    Not only that but I was surprised by just how useful it proved to be, even when testing locally. I ended up needing the adapter because the J1772s were all occupied. Depending on where you go or where you stay on your EV roadtrips, you may find yourself needing to charge using a level 2 tesla charger.
    This adapter by Lectron ensures that you'll be able to pull into any available level 2 charger and charge right up in your EV, otherwise you might be stuck waiting for a J1772 to free up.
    Almost every non Tesla EV out there uses J1772 so this should work for you, there are a few outliers that use Chademo.
    *This does not work for Tesla supercharging.

    I got this adapter recently and tested it twice with my Polestar 2, worked fine. I was getting the full 48 amp (11kW) charge in the car (35 mph) . I have a J1772 in the garage, but use this adapter to top off, for free, in downtown garages. A must have if you spend overnight in hotels in your travel; I just leave it in the trunk in case. I also have a lock to secure the adapter to the car to deter theft.

      Awesome, it's a must have for me now and I like that it's very small and compact. Doesn't take up precious storage space.

    Before buying my Ioniq 5 in September, we took my wife's Leaf to my in-law's beach house in Cape May, NJ. It's pretty dry for EV charging down there and they don't have a driveway or even a guaranteed space in front of the house. We ended up finding out a local hotel has Tesla Destination Charging Stations. They actually let anyone (not just guests of the hotel) use the chargers, free of charge, and let us borrow a Tesla-J1772 adapter as well! After using it once we decided to buy the Lectron so we didn't need to rely on the availability of their charger and would have one for when we might need it on the road.

      I know right? It seems crazy that they'll let just anyone walk up and charge, really nice of them to provide an adapter too! I hope hotels keep providing this free service :)

    I was frustrated bc just plugging in was unsuccessful every time, even with a 30-60 second wait. But when I started charging through the phone app it worked! I still have an old Blink wall charger, but the cord is short and I'd have to back in to use it. We already have the Tesla mobile charger for our Model 3 and it's longer. And this bonus perk: We charge out of the Ioniq 5 with a V2L adapter and charge the 3!

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ooh very interesting, have you tried asking the manufacturer for a replacement to see if it's a faulty one?
      That's pretty cool with using the V2L haha and that makes sense with the longer Tesla charger cable.

      @@CarsJubilee I have not tried to exchange it. I bought it in July and hadn't used it until now. As long as it's currently working via the app, I'll rest my case.

    So far it has always worked for me. I wonder whether people who have issues just don’t wait for long enough. Maybe some adapters even need more than 30 seconds.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what I was wondering too, but I've seen some comments now that make it seem like it just doesn't want to work on the first try each charge. After that it seems to work fine.
      Does yours work on the first try every time?

    • @ManfredvonHolstein
      @ManfredvonHolstein ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CarsJubilee Yes, it has never not worked on first attempt… I would suspect that whether issues occur depends on the charger and how it is set up. Potential issues I could think of: 1) adapter doesn’t work reliably when the charger uses 120 degree offset 2 phase power (208V) vs 180 degree offset split-phase 240V. Would be interesting to hear from users with issues how the respective Tesla charger is connected, if they can figure that out. 2) charger is not strongly grounded - some EVs test the ground as part of the charge initiation and stop if they cannot get strong ground. I don’t know how to define “strong” in this context as I haven’t measured it but I have experienced this issue with a different charger before (and it took me ages to figure out that the ground connection was the problem).

      Oh wow very interesting, I'm going to talk to the contact person and see if they have any thoughts on this. I'm totally fine with having to try twice every time but I could see some people being upset about it.

    I also have this adapter and use it at home with our Hyundai Ioniq 5. We connect to a Tesla wall charger and have never had it work successfully at first without some sort of adjustment needed. Eventually it does work but it's frustrating some times.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm very interesting, I'm going to try and reach out to the manufacturer and see if they know why it does that.
      I'm curious if that happens with other branded adapters too (like Tesla tap).

    When I use this adapter to charge my wife's ioniq 5, I get the charging unsuccessful message if the car's touch screen isn't on. I've had the problem at multiple Tesla destination chargers since getting the car. It took me awhile to realize the adapter was the problem because it works fine charging at home using an original Tesla mobile connector.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that's interesting I'll have to try next time with the car on and see if that bypasses the first failed attempt.

    I have the TeslaTap Mini rated at up to 80Amps. Probably overkill, but I've heard some of the Testa destination EVSE's vary in amps (40-80). Didn't want to be limited or take any chances of frying something in my Ioniq 5. Did I hear wrong or do the Tesla destination EVSE's vary? I did test it at a nearby by hotel (Founders Inn/Virginia Beach, VA) and it work flawlessly. Appreciate your vids and hope you have your I5 roof issues sorted out.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mark, I think you are right about some destination chargers with higher amps.
      I think our ioniq 5 maxes out at 48amps and you can change to reduced charge rate in the infotainment if needed but nothing wrong with having a more robust adapter as it should last longer.

    How fast were you charging that would be a good idea to show.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว

      As fast as the charger would allow. This is a level 2 Tesla destination charger that sends max 7kW.

    You can't use this on tesla's super charger network. It can only be used in the off chance that a hotel or business install them..

      Hotels often have them. Good for overnight. Often have seen them in city parking garages, too.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup exactly, very common to see them at hotels, parking garages and even some shopping centers.
      Of the ones I've seen at hotels the majority seem to be Tesla chargers.

      Installed mine in my garage. Works well. Just won’t start charge on first attempt for some reason. I just leave connected and push the button on the Tesla connector part and it will start. Looking for a resolution to get it to work/start charge first time every time.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh very interesting I had that happen to me on my 2nd day of testing as well. Started right up on the 2nd attempt, I wonder if that is the case for everyone?

    I wonder when Elon opens the supercharger network to people like us. On another note, don't be scared of COVID. If you ever got the virus naturally (no vaccine), you have a good level of immunity to it.

    • @CarsJubilee
      @CarsJubilee  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya that'll be crazy for us in terms of road tripping.
      My family has somehow dodged COVID, to our knowledge. Haven't had a positive test yet but maybe the tests weren't accurate. So now I'm used to these COVID habits like gloves and masks.
