Step back in time with Speedy's Films as we present the classic version of Van Halen's iconic performance at the Niagara Falls Convention Center on September 8, 1978 in 4k 8mm transfer.
Filmed by Speedy himself on Super8 reels during the vibrant '70s, this classic rendition showcases the essence of a legendary era in music history. Immerse yourself in the magic of Van Halen with updated audio and video capturing every iconic moment.
In this version, we've retained the authenticity of the original 8mm footage, offering a focused experience on the band's electrifying performance. While it doesn't include the audio in-between segments, it lets you savor the raw energy, every riff, and every note exactly as captured by Speedy.
In the spirit of complete transparency, we'd like to address a minor aspect of the video. During the final song, you may notice a slight variance in audio quality compared to the rest of the performance, and eagle-eyed viewers might observe a few scenes that aren't perfectly aligned. Regrettably, despite our meticulous efforts, achieving seamless synchronization for some scenes proved to be a challenging task. Additionally, we suspect there might be a missing song from the audio.
We extend our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. Please rest assured that we spared no effort to present you with the highest quality experience. Your understanding is immensely appreciated, and we trust that you'll still find immense enjoyment in this nostalgic journey with Van Halen.
As a tribute to Speedy's passion for preserving musical memories, we invite you to join us on this sonic journey. Your support makes it possible, and for that, we're grateful. If you'd like to contribute to the continuation of this musical adventure, feel free to donate at paypal.me/Speed...
Press play and let the nostalgia of Van Halen's 1978 show wash over you. If you're a fan of the classic format and want to experience the pure essence of this historical performance, this release is tailored just for you.

I'm 63, this video made me feel that energy of being there again. I actually freaking cried.
I hear ya, this was the music of my high school years. I wore a jacket with a big VH on the back. I'm 57 now and still remember the words to most of their songs. So good!!
That's it right there!
Saw them in Indy on this very tour. Amazing of course, and by the time Sabbath went on, Ozzy was already so coked out, he had no voice. The band still sounded great, but not enough to cover the vocals. We left about 4 songs into their set. Thanks a million for posting this. Took me back! 🎸RIP Eddie
Being young is what it's about! Just think Plant and Bonham were 19 in 1968!
@@jclaytoncabral5106Energy of youth!
Dave earned every bit of his legacy with the band, he was a real power house !
He was 24/7 Van Halen
It shows you how much effort David Lee Roth was putting into being a frontman. Plus his overtone singing is crazy.
As in Michael Anthony's falsetto screams? Typical Dave to always look like he's doing those parts. But yeah. Easily amongst the greatest frontmen ever. I love DLR.
Falsetto and Overtone are completely different. If you can't tell what Michael is doing, and what David is doing, go back to the albums. Roth is doing exactly what he does there, here. He's almost Tibetan Monk with his control of his voice and getting two pitches at the same time. @@wildbill7
Cheers for that mate! Learn something new every day :)@@DrTomoculus
This is where a time machine would be nice.😉
It sure would and I would stay there and not come back from 1978 - it was a great year for me and then Van Halen came to England - making it even better !!
THIS IS WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG!
The first four albums and tours were bulletproof
All six albums AND tours were.
Fair Warning was its own masterpiece, albeit very different.
Diver Down is excellent. Yes, its got some "covers" on it, but let's be serious here: "Little Guitars" "Intruder..."
These tunes give the same joy right now as they did the very first time you heard them.
Come on, you can admit it.
I'm on your side, Bro.
I saw these guys in 78 , they totally kicked ass.
Edward was just magical ❤
Even on a lousy recording they sound incredible.
Sometimes in life you make little tiny subconscious decisions that you don't think anything of them at the time, but become monumental..... For example, "I'm going to see this relatively unknown band tonight called van Halen, I think I'll take my 8mm camera with me"..... 45 years later 90,000 people watch it in awe... Well done that person 👏👏
Was at this show, Niagara Falls, NY Convention Center , they opened for Black Sabbath, great show!
i saw this show at madison square garden december 1978
Some observations…1. Alex’s power on the drums. 2. Eddie’s blistering solos and rhythm playing. 3. Those background vocals by Mikey and Eddie (beautiful harmonies) and 4. David Lee Roth’s stage presence, nonstop atomic energy, powerful lead vocals (hurt my throat just hearing them) and those super high pitch whistle register screams. This is really the first live concert of VH I have seen from 1978. Actual real footage…great content!
Amazing what Cocaine can do for ya 😅
Dave is at his best vocally here! Those inhuman screams!
there will never ...ever...be a decade like the 1970s...
No there will not.
Wrong it’s the Rip Roaring Twenties right here right now
Nope , set the bar for the next 30 years
Sixties were phoney,,seventies was back to real
@@joejohnston2035that's stuff old people say
Eddie's crazy ass grooves, his rhythm is just bonkers ...the chords and palm mutes/ghost notes. are bananas
Love the footage - Michael Anthony sure kicks ass - all members integral to VH success
My god, I can’t believe Ed is running around as much as he is, while absolutely nailing the songs. He’s at the height of his VH1-era technique around this period of time.
Can you imagine being a Black Sabbath fan, and you get a set like this from the opening act!?!
i could be wrong, this may have been in the fall of '78 which means that, yes, they were opening for Sabbath.. but at the beginning of the video it shows to drum risers behind Alex's.. when we hear of them opening for Sabbath there is not a 3rd band listed on that leg of the tour.. conversely, the spring of '78 VH did open for Montrose and Journey headlining.. just an observation. maybe this footage is from that period?
I saw Van Halen on this tour (Fall 1978), opening for Black Sabbath, at the Hollywood (Florida) Sportatorium. I had already heard the first Van Halen LP and was a Sabbath fan also. Van Halen blew Sabbath off the stage. At one point David Lee Roth was somehow catapulted over the drum kit from behind the drum riser, flying over Alex's head doing a full split landing on the stage at the exact moment the band exploded into the power cords in Ain't Talking Bout Love. Pulled out all the stops.
I read an interview with Ozzy where he said his band stood backstage watching their opening act and didn’t want to go out there after the Mighty Van Halen had blown up the place.
3 months prior to the day I was born. Still the best band to ever take a stage. RIP Ed
Thank you Jim ! RIP brother.
An album a year followed by a tour. I think 5 years in a row. I saw three. Good times. 🎉
78,79,82 yep...they had the nation buzzing.
Michael Anthony has absolutely the highest vocals for a background singer . Him & Dave singing ‘On Fire’ is incredible.
Wow I was at this show right up front too.Think tickets were $8 maybe $7 lol. My friends and I still talk about this show as we smile from ear to ear.
Yep, tickets in those days averaged around $7.50 per, and that was for headline acts. 👍
EVH playing a Les Paul...Wow this is way way back.. What chemistry and just ferocious rock on 11.
79, 80, 81 was magical, you would wait all year anxiously for them to come to town like a kid waiting for Christmas. This was VH at their very best.
Don’t forget 82. Unbelievable year. Greensboro was legendary. I agree, I would dream about the shows before and after I saw them. Unmatched to this day. Saw them 15 times between 78 and 82. Incredibly powerful.
@@Iknowthtruth They were all great right up to the last tour with Dave. Had front row for the Diver Down tour and had Eddie lean right over me playing the opening riff in the lead to Ice Cream Man. His solo segment was awesome too especially when he broke into Cathedral, goosebumps....
I´m a 64 year old Heavy Metal Fan who started with DEEP PURPLE and i saw so much top bands. But never VAN HALEN and TED NUGENT : - ( So i´m lucky to watch this. Cheers and many greetings from Germany : - D
Check out nugent at Rockpalast. 1976.
This is the best Ive ever seen Eddie play live. To bad this is all cut up and not the full concert. Guitar sound is just the perfect EVH sound.
In 78 I saw them in Tucson Arizona
I saw Van Halen back up Black Sabbath a few days before this concert at the Cape Cod Coliseum. I had heard their version of You Really Got Me and bought the album a few months before the September 1978 concert. It was the start of a new generation of guitarist when we all heard Eddie Van Halen wailing his guitar ❤RIP EDDIE VAN HALEN
I was at the Cape Cod coliseum that was one of my best memories of my life. Everyone I was with is dead now.
Wow cape cod Colosseum that beings back some memories of concerts and playing hockey there. Miss those days
@@ptech88 Tom Petty and J.Geils Band also played there whenever they were on tour. The building didn’t have air conditioning so those summer concerts were hot.Back in 1978 we paid $7.50 for Black Sabbath and Van Halen tickets and in the early 80’s tickets were still under $10.00 a ticket!!
I had heard you really got me on the radio, my buddies and I were riding around getting high and somebody had the new Van Halen 8-track he put it in and when I heard the car horn for Running With the Devil I got a big head rush! Then the rest of the song started and I'm like hell yeah I like this and then eruption we were like what the fuck is he doing is that a guitar? I was hooked and I still am and I'm 62 years old now!
@@Michael420-mh7dd Sounds like my drive to high school every day 😂😂
I was working room service at a local hotel & brought an order to a couple of the VH guys & they fired one up with me, so & the show was awesome 😊
Damn so good, why aren't there bands with this kind of energy anymore?
Why? They want the dividends to pay off before they put the work in to pay them off. Today's generation and the last or so, want all the play, without the pay. Just the glory, no guts, etc.
First concert ever seen V.H. ,I was young enough to grow up while hard rock and metal progressed in late 70s -early 80s & seen Wasp ,preist ,maiden ,
Ratt ,testament ,saxonalot more I could list , these bands did not have the ferociousness that MIGHTY V.H. contained these guys were taking no prisoners back then, I'll never forget ,I was thinking where did these guys come
From ? Outterspace . THANK YOU ! Brings back Great memories
I saw ratt, priest,Ozzy after VH and they looked like old men.I realized nobody was ever gonna come close to VH so my last show was in 86.I saw Queen in 80,SRV in 83 and those were the only bands that came close.
Me too,Van Halen backing up Black Sabbath!!!September 1978 Cape Cod Coliseum West Yarmouth,Massachusetts!!Blotter acid and a big bag of weed 😎Those were the days
Saw this tour. Great times.
This is gooooood,
Man Dave’s vocals were so good here
I saw them in 1979. They only had two albums out was incredible.
That was the best show I thought...saw them 78, 79, 82.
I got on stage with them at the Civic Center in Oklahoma City '78, ironically, my Brother at our BEST ROCK STATION IN OKLAHOMA CITY,ROCK 100.5 THE KATT, gave me the whole show recorded live
Saw them exactly 2 months prior to this- 7/8/78 in San Diego. "Eruption" dropped _sooo_ many jaws...
= thanks 4 share !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! long live evh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome. Unstoppable. I also like the spot lights and how the stages were darker back then.
I was there in Vancouver when this tour happened and what a great show it was. And yes, my ears were ringing after.
I saw this tour in Oakland California. Great show always remember it. Black Sabbath was good. Ozzy tried his hardest. But Van Halen was on the escalator up as Black Sabbath was sadly heading down. Van Halen fan forever after that show. Anybody else there?
yep...saw the same show in Detroit...Sabbath were awful...VH just killed it. Def witnessing a changing of the guard that night....
2 days earlier in Cape Cod MA
Unfuckinbelieveable 🤘🤘🤘
Had been listening all summer on cassette in the car
Amazing that this exists! I was there.8 bucks.Van Halen kicked ass.What a souvenir.Thank you.Long Live Rock!
So good to see them young, fun, fast, so fresh ! thanks a lot!
I was less than a month old when this was filmed. I'm 45 years old now, and work in a machine shop. Van Halen is my favorite band. Thanks for reading the story of my life. Good bye.
Thanks for this unexpected Christmas gift!
Happy holidays!
Great video. DLR doing his high screams every other note explains why his voice is shot now. Ed kicking ass (of course) Alex and Michael solid as always
Everybody there was like Holy Fucking Shit! Changed my life.
I saw them in Anaheim, California. The incredible show changed my life ❤
Thank You. Thank You. Thank You !!!!!!!!!!!
Ozzy, Geezer them dudes were probably backstage saying what the fuck !!! We gotta follow this!!
They we're shitting their pants! 😂 💩
They absolutely WERE NOT!!!
LOL! They might as well have just packed up and taken the next flight home!
Saw that in San Antonio
These boys were the real deal at this time, before Dave turned into a monster 👺 This is F n real R+R
Man I was 13 at the time but saw them in Bloomington Mn in the 80's and they STILL went this hard !
I saw this tour in Jacksonville Fl, they opened for Black Sabbath. They blew minds that night.
Unbelievable. Game changing guitar player.
I remember the first album....it put us all in shock at the shear energy and power.....some even doubting that there was only one guitarist.....there had to be at least 3, right????
BUT....... the anticipation of the release of VHII was one that set even that tsunami on it's edge and sent electric guitarists worldwide back AGAIN for a SECOND time to relearn their instrument........
those tapping octave harmonics on the intro section of Women In Love were an unfathomable masterpiece of it's own right, in as much as the rest of the song.....and the album.
There was no way around it....they permanently changed all of rock n roll in less than 3 years time. And I'm incredibly grateful to have experienced it first hand as it unfolded.
Little Dreamer, probably the most underrated song in Van Halen's repertoire.
The harmonies were crazy good
“Women in love “never on radio was killer
I saw them on this tour, opening for Black Sabbath in St. Louis. They basically knocked me out of my seat! I remember they had such high energy, jumping around. Nice to see the memories.
Did you have any idea what to expect from them going in? Heard any songs?
Yep, Birmingham November 8th
@johncash5940 yes did you see them too?
@@capsdude4838 No, I knew next to nothing about VH. I was there to see BS, but Van Halen's performance was possibly the best concert I ever saw.
Me too !!!!! checkerdome , sep 16th
My dream came true when I saw Black Sabbath and Van Halen in Philadelphia waaaay back. Van Halen were the new kids on the block, but they took the crown that night! I couldn't believe it.
..... ( OMG ) I saw them on September 4th 1978 with Black Sabbath ~ Down the Cape... it was my First Concert ... a week before I started High School.... ( Thank U ) U Blew my mind Bruh~ Im 60 now....~ The Riot Police Ringed the Entire Arena .... Hells Angles showed up ... what did I know, I figured all Concerts were that out of Control.....
I saw every tour they did (with Dave)!!!
I saw them at the Cape Cod(Massachusetts) Coliseum in August of 1978. Great Memories.
I was 13 at that time. Wish I would have seen them starting in '78 but my first concert was in 1980 Foghat then I saw VH in '80 as well and every time after that until 1984's tour. I always got to the arena right after school so I could run in when they opened the doors and get a seat on Eddie's side every time. Great time to be alive.
Those days were great weren't they Festival seating no chairs on the floor you could get right up to the stage if you got there early enough people partying everywhere a lot of wild shit going on firecrackers popping off everywhere. Imagine that in today's society hell I even saw people couple of concerts for people were handing joints from the audience to the band one of them being Ronnie Van Zant of Lynyrd Skynyrd grab the joint out of somebody's hand big huge rebel flag up behind them Shining! Damn good times.
Saw VH that year in Albany NY I was 15 , they opened for Montrose and Journey , we didn't even know who they were , before the show there was this drumset outside the backstage door with gas masks hanging on it, this guy was standing by it we thought it was a roadie,he was pretty cool and shot the shit with us for awhile, when the show started out comes VH and the first thing I see is the drummer, and I said hey that's the guy we were talking to outside, of course it was Alex Van Halen , awesome show, will never forget, great seeing this, just how I remembered
i saw vh on their winnipeg stop of this 1978 tour.
it was beyond great !
This is incredible footage. Dave’s voice is strong and they’re full of life. The best Van Halen!!
Looking forward to the Zeppelin 77 footage. You’ll grab a ton more subs once it’s uploaded.
All the best in the new year. Cheers ✌️❤️🇨🇦
Fact, at least the audio should be re-released 💿
I saw them 2 nights later in New Haven. I went to the show for Sabbath and became a Van Halen fan that night. They blew Sabbath off the stage. I went to the record store with my friend after school the next day and bought their album.
Band sounds really good, but Dave just doesn't. What he does is only jumping and made some kind of voice, only singing is made by Michael Anthony.
I can not believe this exists! I was there.8 dollars!!!! What a souvenir! Thank you.Long Live Rock!
This shows a young hungry for fame on top of there game mighty VAN HALEN !
Thanks to the dude who filmed this and knew this was history in the making:) I saw them in 1980 - the power that was coming from that stage was amazing- it’s hard to put into words to describe how you felt at a VH show. was a very special time. I feel very fortunate to be able had seen this.
@SheilaLSI loved Van Halen back at 1 & 2. I never saw them. I have never seen any footage when Roth sounded anywhere near good. I wish I could say different. In fact he sounds like shit every stinking time. He was horrible. Eddie was VH. Period. They could have hired a chimpanzee to jump around and play with the microphone chord.
@SheilaLS Roth sounded amazing ? If you say so. Also surprised that you think Alex stole the show. How much of that huge kit he smothered himself in did he use ? Bottom line, I'm glad you enjoyed the show !! PEACE from Philadelphia
Edit; Alex didn't perform a light show. You can thank the 20 techs that set all that up. People forget to give them credit. Shows like VH takes an ARMY to pull off !
@SheilaLS I completely agree. Didn't you read " Bottom line is that you enjoyed the show ! ". I also can write how surprised I am that people think that DLR can sing ! For a few years he was extremely athletic. Never was he a singer. But again Sheila, I'm stoked for you enjoying the show ! I am a guitarist who, unfortunately cannot sing..It probably cost me 100 gigs in my lifetime. I'll soon be 60. (Wow). My mind says 35. I'm scared right now because I need surgery on my right hand. That is why I'm sitting here reading TH-cam comments. Sucks. At least my guitars will be Xtra clean and my pedalboard arranged more to my liking. 1/8 note then 1/4 note delays in that order.
Sorry 'bout that rant. Missing the band.
@SheilaLS Thanks for the well wishes. We tend to think that surgeons are perfect. Worse yet, surgeons think surgeons are perfect. Extreme corporal tunnel syndrome on my right hand stemming from a spinal cord injury. I was a lineman and back in 2019 I fell 25ft onto a boulder. Smashed to pieces 4 ribs and sent the bones flying across my chest puncturing both lungs and broke my spine in two places, broke my cheekbone, jawbone and top teeth on right side. I had two young guys on the crew the 22yr old ran in circles with his hands on his head screaming. The other 30 something called 911. I saw the panic in the guys eyes
Anywho, how did I get here telling you all this ? For calling 911 I just took him to see the Eagles in Pittsburgh. Front row dead center. Could see the chords they were playing. Joe Walsh was the coolest but he's burnt out. Gotta love him. The rest, were perfect. Singing, playing but we're robotic jerks. Trust me They sent a message to the guard telling me to please stop yelling to the Eagles. What ? Seriously ? Paid$2,500 a seat and your rich ass is telling me something ? Yeah $5,000 to see jerk offs play exactly like the radio. Not a note more, not a drum fill more. Don't like them anymore
Peace from Philadelphia
@SheilaLS Sorry I ranted. Holy crap
Thank you for sharing this treasure for all to see.
WOW!!!! live video footage of him playing the white Les Paul Custom at the end! Always loved pics of him playing that Les Paul. 🤩🤩❤❤💘💝💗💯💯💯
The boys from Pasadena making history in their prime. RIP Eddie
Love it ! Ima bout to turn 53. Older cousin gave me their 1st album when i was like 8 years old. Definitely my favorite band growing up. Dad was supposed to take me to see them on fair warning tour but backed out at the last minute. Bitched everyday until they came back the following year, Halloween night on the diver down tour '83. Hampton VA. Changed my life ! Lol...seen them several times afterwards. Saw them with Sammy and saw them on the reunion tour with Dave and Wolfgang at the Wells Fargo center in Philly. All great shows! What an era to grow up in, goin to amazing concerts on a Friday or Saturday night! Thanks for the memories!!!
I saw them at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando with the Rolling Stones in 1981. F’g great show! The stadium was packed and VH was phenomenal. It was a summertime outdoor concert and hot as balls. Great show and memories! The world has lost some great musicians in the last few years. RIP Eddie! Thank you for the great music!
Seen this tour in 78..Midland tx..they opened up for black sabbath 🤘
Kick ass.... for those who say David Lee can't deliver live I say this debunks completely

this was a WTF moment in "78! made my year
I saw this tour, VH opening for Sabbath in Detroit. 1978. STrange that they opened with " Jamie's Crying " that night.
It’s amazing that there are many that think the Sammy years were better lol!!!!
VH still put in great shows with lots of energy with Sammy but this group was pushing Led Zep status in the Dave years. These songs are so original and so well constructed, heavy and raw. What an era it was back then. Who’s have known it was all gonna come to an end in the 90s with dumbed down grunge and taking the guitar solos out of whatever was supposed to be “Hard Rick.”
The Sammy Years= when frat boy douche bags got into Van Halen !
Wow !!! Thanks for sharing this Gold footage.
all these cuts are maddening. ROTH IS THE GREATEST FRONTMAN IN THE HISTORY OF ROCK N ROLL
Grainy video aside, along with jump cuts, this is incredible to watch. Eddie is so on point here. Heck, they're all killin' it. Little Dreamer, too. Nice.
These guys I feel are going to make the big time. I’m just guessing.
Fukin AWESOME!!! My first VH gig 1980 Invasion Jacksonville Fla...11-16-80🤘
This disjointed video footage can't derail my my memories of seeing Van Halen and their great music. I remember.
Wow. VH so raw and so energetic. They were ready to conquer the world. And they did. I wish I could've seen them live on this tour but my folks said no way. I was 13. I was overjoyed.
My first RnR concert ever. VH opening for Black Sabbath. 💥

Neat footage of Michael before "Running With the Devil".
If I didn't know better I would swear this was footage from the philadelphia spectrum on the night I was there! Sabbath headlined and got crushed!
Beyond epic! What a great Christmas gift! I had seen them 6 days earlier in Pittsburgh, & this video represents what I experienced that night fairly well, especially the Les Paul for YRGM & Dave's final jump from Mike's amp-stack. Great job on the overall A/V sync, & even the opening snippet of the stage was epic.

I saw this tour. They were the first act at an all-day stadium concert. The thing I remember all these years later is the energy. This video captures that in a big way. Eddie Money had to follow this. It didn't go well . . .
WOW!!!! This is AWESOME!!!! Thank you.

What a time capsule.
the energy these guys brought to the stage was amazing
