    I often leave the stitch unlocked and cut with about 4 inches of extra thread remaining. I then flip over the workpiece and lift the inside thread to pull the outside thread to the inside and then tie it off. I do this most when the stitch just stops and there is no other option.

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Greavous, Excellent method! I call this hand-tying a stitch. This is helpful if you run out of bobbin midway through a top stitch. Thanks for watching!

    So doing it this way does that eliminate need for reinforcing material behind it? If so, what about seat edges will they be as durable and strong?

      Yeah, without the reinforcement there is no point, other than looks. Why not just add it? You're already using the thread and time.

    • @angelajwilliams8483
      @angelajwilliams8483 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep, I was also taught to reinforce this stitch. Otherwise the only thing holding the seam together is the thread. This seam won't hold up for long. @JustAboutAnything66

    Is this the correct way to lock in the French seam? I will watch to next 2 videos but I just did catch a "Definite Yes" in the video. I diagnose and fix them but can sew often. But based upon my past experience this looks like a clever way of getting it done with increasing thickness or hoping the next panels stitch will catch it. Thanks! To the point with good info.

    I've always used a backing strip so that the strength of the joint isn't relying on the threads of that first stitch.
    Is that something you do later on? Or it is something you don't think is needed? If so, on which areas of the seat?
    Thanks.

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hello Scout, In 45 years, I have never put a backing strip. The T-90 thread is very strong and will not break. Just make sure your top and bottom thread tensions are good. I think if I had to do a backing strip, I would be adding an extra step and wasting time. Just sayin'. But you can do it if you want to. Please keep liking and watching!

  • @pharpester
    @pharpester ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That’s very good, I used to get the ends pulling apart. Do you put an extra material on the inside of the French cleat so you can’t see through to the foam?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Pharpester, We've all been there. Learning is doing. There is no need to add a backing material of the French stitch if your machine thread tension is tight enough. Please keep liking and watching!
