Great video. I tried your tip from a previous video about not back stitching on a French stitch. It worked great and definitely does look much better. I only wish I would have seen this video before I finished mine. I never gave it a thought to use a thicker thread to give the stitch more definition. I used regular thread and it looks nice, but doesn't really stand out...but that's ok. Thank you for sharing another great tip with us.
Grew up around an upholstery shop. Never knew about the numbers for thread sizes! Learned something! Yes, I grew up around a shop, I know how to run a sewing machine, and I have the one my dad used. However I haven't done much precision sewing. I want to sew the seats in my late father's 1958 Plymouth Suburban. Car in my profile picture. Need some practice. You let us out of class early today Richard! The thickness of the thread along with the spacing of the stitches really does change the look of the project. It looks very nice.
I love technique 576, for locking your French stitch before starting. Turning with needle down is now something I will not forget as I do mine. I will say the my Juki lock stitch is jealous of your walking foot and size 8 stitch length. I talked it, my machine and it feels better about being slightly inferior! Very, very beautiful. I have an old airplane (1961) that needs new seat foam and upholstery. I’ve been scouring the web for ideas. I love your double-diamond insets and French stitching. I hope I can find a craftsman worth his salt here in lower Alabama. Having grown up in central California, there was never any shortage of talented upholstery men. Not yet sure that I trust these southerners with the job! lol!

Always amazing content! I have been using #69 T70 size thread for the center pleats and then the outer top stitch but it just looks too skinny and can end up being a bit wavy when the material is stretched. Unfortunately I just have a “HD” Singer home machine running 110/18 needles. Do you think it’s at all possible to go a size up say T90? Thanks wise one 🙏

I wanted to see the bobbin thread, that’s the area I’m having issues. The heavy top thread is showing a bead on the bottom so if you pull the bobbin thread it comes out easily. Is that the way it’s supposed to be on vinyl ? Thanks
Hello Norma, the first thing to do is check your thread tensions. Unless you can see the bobbin thread coming through on top, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You should never see the bottom thread, just the top thread only. Please keep liking and watching!

Thank you for the tips! That looks great! I do have one question though. Do you ever put a strip of cloth on the underside to make the stitch stronger? I am pretty new at this and I notice that when I do french seams it looks like the stitch holding the two peices of material may not be strong enough to hold up to continuous use. Thanks.

Some channels show using a backer on the French stitch. Is this necessary with the heavy upholstery fabrics? I feel like where the french seam is on an edge it could add too much bulk. What are you thoughts?

Ok... I'm always commenting and asking questions. I'm curious....do you ever use a "binding" technique on the backside of the stitches to make the seam stronger? If yes, when do you choose to do so. WIthout the added binding, the seam looks great but is still only held by row of stitching.

I do a lot of sewing I use 92 for seams and a lot of 277 for other things {by the way I on Crystal Bear Leather work} so I mainly am sewing leather But I have never been able to use the same needle for both thread, I guess in leather the bigger needle with small thread would show the larger holes made by the needle

So in your video you dont keep a consistent space from the center joining seam.. I have always found it looks sloppy when the stitch is not perfectly spaced from the center.. Were you doing this for demonstration purposes only showing the construction of the french seam?

That was ok for a quicky demo but you didn't mention that the tension needs to be adjusted for the different threads. As a result of not sorting that your demo stitches were quite untidy 😮

@@oldschoolautoupholstery Thanks for taking the time to reply. I do think a neat topstitch is very important for a professional finish though. Many machines other than yours absolutely do need the tension juggled when changing between threads. My machines (Mitsubishi type top and bottom feed) don't like a top thread bigger than T210 and it has to be bonded polyester as bonded nylon is way too stiff at those sizes. It's good that you are sharing your many years of experience though, I read the comments and you are helping beginners with their confidence 👍
As you already know, that’s a fake french stitch, a true french stitch has a piece of ribbon or thick material on the back side before the last two stitches which gives you the strength of three stitches, not one stitch as you portrayed.
Hello Dennis, Like I always say, there is more than one way of getting things done. In 44 years and thousands of French stitches, I have seen it done both ways when I take something apart. Great video. I tried your tip from a previous video about not back stitching on a French stitch. It worked great and definitely does look much better. I only wish I would have seen this video before I finished mine. I never gave it a thought to use a thicker thread to give the stitch more definition. I used regular thread and it looks nice, but doesn't really stand out...but that's ok. Thank you for sharing another great tip with us.

I love technique 576, for locking your French stitch before starting. Turning with needle down is now something I will not forget as I do mine. I will say the my Juki lock stitch is jealous of your walking foot and size 8 stitch length. I talked it, my machine and it feels better about being slightly inferior! Very, very beautiful. I have an old airplane (1961) that needs new seat foam and upholstery. I’ve been scouring the web for ideas. I love your double-diamond insets and French stitching. I hope I can find a craftsman worth his salt here in lower Alabama. Having grown up in central California, there was never any shortage of talented upholstery men. Not yet sure that I trust these southerners with the job! lol!

Always amazing content! I have been using #69 T70 size thread for the center pleats and then the outer top stitch but it just looks too skinny and can end up being a bit wavy when the material is stretched.
Unfortunately I just have a “HD” Singer home machine running 110/18 needles. Do you think it’s at all possible to go a size up say T90?

Hey Richard. Great Video! Love your stuff! Could you please tell us what you do about bottom thread? Do you use your normal T90 black bottom stitch for most color and thickness combinations of your top stitch?

I wanted to see the bobbin thread, that’s the area I’m having issues. The heavy top thread is showing a bead on the bottom so if you pull the bobbin thread it comes out easily. Is that the way it’s supposed to be on vinyl ? Thanks
Hello Norma, the first thing to do is check your thread tensions. Unless you can see the bobbin thread coming through on top, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You should never see the bottom thread, just the top thread only. Please keep liking and watching!

Hello Rrod, I use Keyston Bros. They have several locations in the USA and they ship. For aircraft, it is best and sometimes required to get the FAA approved burn test materials. Especially if it needs to be logged. Experimental aircraft, not so much. Please keep liking and watching!

I am pretty new at this and I notice that when I do french seams it looks like the stitch holding the two peices of material may not be strong enough to hold up to continuous use. Thanks.
Hello Usually, Thank you so much for saying so. In 44 years I have never used the strip of cloth. It is not necessary. Your just wasting a bunch of time. In Auto upholstery, the manufacturers never use a strip of cloth. Use of the strip of cloth is very rare. I would just do it as you seen me do it in the video. Please keep liking and watching!
If you don’t add an additional strip element beneath both stitches, the joint between the two pieces will remain very weak.
Hello Piexy, sorry to say this, but not true. There is not one automotive manufacturer in 100 years that backs a topstitch. Just need to make sure your thread tension is correct. T-92 thread is very strong. In 45 years, I never had a problem. Just sayin'. Please keep liking and watching!

Some channels show using a backer on the French stitch. Is this necessary with the heavy upholstery fabrics? I feel like where the french seam is on an edge it could add too much bulk. What are you thoughts?

Ok... I'm always commenting and asking questions. I'm curious....do you ever use a "binding" technique on the backside of the stitches to make the seam stronger? If yes, when do you choose to do so. WIthout the added binding, the seam looks great but is still only held by row of stitching.

I do a lot of sewing I use 92 for seams and a lot of 277 for other things {by the way I on Crystal Bear Leather work} so I mainly am sewing leather But I have never been able to use the same needle for both thread, I guess in leather the bigger needle with small thread would show the larger holes made by the needle

So in your video you dont keep a consistent space from the center joining seam.. I have always found it looks sloppy when the stitch is not perfectly spaced from the center.. Were you doing this for demonstration purposes only showing the construction of the french seam?

That was ok for a quicky demo but you didn't mention that the tension needs to be adjusted for the different threads. As a result of not sorting that your demo stitches were quite untidy 😮

Many machines other than yours absolutely do need the tension juggled when changing between threads. My machines (Mitsubishi type top and bottom feed) don't like a top thread bigger than T210 and it has to be bonded polyester as bonded nylon is way too stiff at those sizes.

As you already know, that’s a fake french stitch, a true french stitch has a piece of ribbon or thick material on the back side before the last two stitches which gives you the strength of three stitches, not one stitch as you portrayed.
Hello Dennis, Like I always say, there is more than one way of getting things done. In 44 years and thousands of French stitches, I have seen it done both ways when I take something apart.
