    Using at least one free hand, you try to seize the target by making a grapple check instead of an Attack roll: a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use)

    Hi again Fred, just wondering, are there any disadvantages to the person being grappled? I wouldn't seem right for a monster to be able to successfully loose an arrow, if he had a fighter grabbing onto his arm(for example). Is really the only things that happens is the grappled creature can't move?

    • @HowtoRPG

    Grappling is ridiculously underpowered without the grappler feat. I thought grappling would be cool with a 18 strength char vs a 8 strength warlock. Ended up the warlock being still abel to normally cast and attack me, dealing 36 dmg in one round at level 4 lol. 5e is so dumb for melee classes

    Sorry, a lot of rambling incoming and I'm certainly not the first person to think of this, but:
    Grappling halves your moving speed and you can grapple with two appendages at the same time. Does that mean the movement speed is 0 or is it a quarter?
    Also, Aarakocra can fly and as far as I have researched, carrying while flying is the same as carrying while walking, so strength * 15. So, if we take an Aarakocra monk, the flight speed is 50 ft., halved by grappling someone, doubled again using a ki point for dash, so again 50 ft. Is it possible to grapple a foe (say, up to 150 pounds for a monk with 10 STR), fly upwards, dashing to 50 ft. and just... drop them? Falling damage is 1d6 for every 10 ft. (up to 20d6), so 5d6 for 50 ft., plus the creature lands prone.
    I know this would depend on several unusual things happening (for starters, having enough STR + Athletics to even grapple in the first place as a monk) but in theory, the monk could have a background containing athletics (Outlander seems to fit the Aarakocra) and start dropping Goblins at level 2!
    Thanks in advance for reading this convoluted mess.

      I'll answer your first question. Using one or two hands to grapple has no affect that is different, by core rules. A DM can rule differently if they want.

I'm trying to make a chameleon race, and if it hits a small enemy with its tongue, it will pull it into its maw, and grappling it. But I still don't understand this grapple mechanic. Does a nat 20 auto grapple or beat grapple or does the number still need to be higher?
    Example grappler rolls a 19 plus 5 gets 24
    Target rolls 20 plus 3 gets 23
    Does the grappler win due to higher number or does target shake them off just cuz of a nat 20
    Context: having a rough time with a dm that just abuses nat 20 for their benefit and just says what I'm trying to do is impossible with my nat 20s... I said I pushed a box block our path, not a Boulder just a wooden box, not only did I move the box it slid back into Place and made rocks fall on us in the cave... Not exactly a crit success if I didn't move it out of the way and we got debris and rocks falling on us.

      Rolling a natural 20 on a D20 to automatically hit a target only applies to attack rolls. Skill, ability checks and saving throws don't get automatic success on a natural 20.

    I'm developing custom rules for grappling in my D&D 5e campaigns. The summary is that grappling works normally, but I'm adding to the system. Currently, you need only one free hand and get what many consider to be a lackluster amount of control. My addition is to have a two-handed grapple, requiring two free hands that are then bound for the duration of the grapple. You make the same Athletics vs Athletics/Acrobatics check only, if you're successful with a two-handed grapple, the target is restrained. Normal rules then apply from here. Major redesign for the Grappler feat as well as adjustment to the Restrained condition to apply to casters as well as martial classes. Lay me some thoughts, fellow nerds.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can the changes be made without rewriting the Grappler feat and the Restrained condition?

  • @liberalideas8224

    When I clicked on this video, I was kind of hoping to hear a few examples of why someone would choose to grapple from an experienced player. As is, I learned from reading the comments below that grapple only reduces an enemies movement to 0 while grappled and reduces your movement by half. Additionally, there is a grappler feat that applies the restrained condition on the target, which does more things (not clear on what those are with opening a players handbook). Do you think you could put a little focus on this kind of information for future videos you make and a little less on the basic math? Still happy I checked out the vid and I get that some people need to see that math written out to understand, but I would be much more interested in checking out the rest of your videos if there were at least a few examples of why this mechanic useful.
    An example I can think of would be for your shove video where you spent about 3 minutes doing the math over and over. Instead, you could have highlight the math behind the increase in percent chance to hit a prone enemy for a high damage party member and the core rule books math on fall damage for shoving someone off a ledge, ect. I hope this comment comes off as someone trying to give some positive criticism rather than anything negative.

    • @alexjenkins9430
      @alexjenkins9430 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I have seen if you went from a grapple and did a shove the opponent will be prone and will have disadvantage on all attacks, my dwarven fighter has learnt the ability of grapple and pin so from a grapple I can make a pin attempt where I will get advantage on all battles and the opponent will have disadvantage still and can't get up. It's a way of overpowering and dealing more damage if you have an adventure with a good strength score.
      You could also drag them to a cliff edge and shove them over the end to kill them. I did wish the video went into more details about the size comparisons as examples

  • @gallaros9

    The main reason why my players refuse to use grappling is the fact that opponents that shouldn't be able to easily escape a successful grapple manage to leave break free without a problem. As an incentive I made it so that after the initial check, you can only break free with Athletics afterwards. I Believe that to be fair as STR players sacrifice dex saves for what is essentially roleplay. Also its quite upsetting when you have a player make a grapple build, and Kobolds and goblins just slip out of their grasp.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HowtoRPG I dislike the "fudge rolls" answers. Doing it too much puts you in a bad habit. Also, DND as a system fails at rewarding creative choices unless you min max. A player once really wanted a demon hunter like in Diablo, dual. Wielding Hand crossbows. According to DnDs loading mechanic, the player cannot do that due to needing a free hand. I gave the person 2 options. Easy option was a family heirloom magic item that basically removes the loading property issue and some minor bolt recovery magic, or he could start of with regular gear and try to develop a new crossbow that actually can actually handle one handed loading. Being a good sport she avoided the lvl 1 magic item cheese. It completely changed her roleplay from being your usual Legolas style Ranger to an Elven Woman refusing to listen to tradition and facing the technological advances of the sword coast. On top of that, to revitalise her family Fletching business, she also dreams of developing a better Array of ranged weapons and have the name Luodea be known throughout the lands. So in her journey, she hunts beasts and forages lands for useful materials, while studying with craftsman from Bryn Shander to Baldurs Gate. As a result, she would carry concept prototypes into battle of which the first 3 or so malfunctioned, until she perfected her craft. After some classic "you betrayed our way" family interactions, she used her Gold to create her own shop in Yartar, and "Harleens Easy Game" fletchers shoppe got quite famous.
      Bending rules beyond "ok. You did it" has fantastic results
