    At first I thought the title of this video was "Shaving A Monster". I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed that I was wrong.

    A Fighter with Extra Attacks can use Shove as a first attack to prone the enemy if the Fighter wants to have advantage on the subsequent Extra Attacks. Almost all Fighters have proficiency in Athletics, meaning it can be a good tactic especially at higher levels. In my last game I successfully Shoved an enemy to make them prone, had advantage on the next attacks, then finished the enemy off. The DM credited me my interpretation of the rules.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a great tactic if many of the party characters also get advantage on the attack.

    Pro tip: if you have multiple attacks and are fighting one big bad enemy do the following for an easy duel/beatdown;
    1) Grapple the creature with an athletics contest.
    2) Shove the creature prone.
    3) Attack them with your free hand and have your party circle the enemy if needed.
    Benefits of this strategy:
    - The enemy gets disadvantage because it is prone.
    - The enemy cannot get up because it needs to spend movement to stand and he has 0ft because of the grapple.
    - It needs to spend an action to attempt to break the grapple.
    - You can drag the creature on the ground so it doesn't stop you from moving it from moving it from the grapple. So pull them into AoE effects/traps that force them to make saves.
    This strategy is extremely powerful for Fighters and Barbarians that can "tank" damage and free the party up to deal with other threats or group up.

    Does a shove or grapple count as a proper attack action? If so can I then use monk martial arts to follow up with unarmed strikes or flurry of blows?

    I have a question on goes along with Shoving a creature. I have a Fighter that has taken the Shield Master Feat. (I don't have the pg # in the PHB)
    The ability reads "If you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to try to shove a creature within 5 feet of you with your shield."
    Would this allow my fighter to use his bonus action to attempt to knock a creature prone then attack it with advantage? Or because it says if does that mean I have to attack it first then shove it?

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a good point. I like your thinking. Will do some research and get back to you.

      @@HowtoRPG I had a discussion with my DM about it and he ruled that in order for me to use Shield Master Feat to knock a creature prone I had to make my attacks first. He felt that if I were to knock a guy prone then be able to make 2 attacks on it was too powerful at lvl 5...

    Can you attack the grappler? I see a lot of people panic and just try to break out of the grapple instead of attacking the Grappler. Now Shove and Grapple are two different things. WHO determines if the victim of a shove goes prone or goes 5 ft back (DM or Player)?
    If you Grapple a Prone opponent, would the victim have to break your grapple before it can use half its movement to get up (Because under Grappled condition- the movement speed = 0 or can I say I'm dividing Zero by 2 and I can get up as an action and have no movement speed left because Zero divided by Two is still Zero)?
    If the Grappler/Attacker Grapples a PRONE opponent, does that mean you (the Attacker/Grappler) are Prone as well (if your victim has a friend within 5 feet they can melee attack you with advantage)?

    But couldn’t they just stand up when it’s their turn?

  • @LogieBearProductions
    @LogieBearProductions 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sorry, but a 15 actually should be successful regardless of a tie or not. Whether it is a skill check, attack roll etc. When a DC is set for anything, the rule is to meet or exceed the DC to be successful in any situation. So a tie, or meeting the DC, is actually successful.
    However, other than that very good video and quite useful :)

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Shove is a contest, it does not work like a normal skill check or attack roll (see page 195-196 of the PHB). The contest rules are discussed on page 174 of the PHB.
