    Hi Fred, I love your videos. I know this is a little late but I have a real follow-up and I've watched your other videos. If I was running Lost Mines and the goblins in the ambush take their bonus action to hide after slinging their arrows do the players use passive or active perception next? If active, what sense does it make that their chances are worse to detect the goblins? If passive, how can their chances of detecting the goblins be the same as before they first attacked? How do you resolve this problem? Is there a "by the book solution"? Also, would you apply advantage to the goblins if they are attacking from the relative darkness of a roadside thicket + high ground (+11)? It seems like if you apply the rules to this first 5e encounter it's an absolute massacre and the players best take off on foot. Makes me think there is a whole lot of improv for the DM. Thanks for your great videos, you're the only one who touched this even on a tangent

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. I made a video on this topic. The characters have to actively search with an action for the Goblins. You can use active checks, passive perception or both together and use the highest score. Yes lots of DM improving. Matt it's never to late. Just have to ask the right question in a civil way. You did all that :)

      Hi, thank you for your response so fast! I'm sorry, I'm still a little unsure. I do think I've seen all your videos (if I've missed the relevant video - maybe you could pass along a link). If I use an action for perception than I"m risking a penalty because I could roll a lower score than passive perception. Maybe I don't understand fully active checks. I'm wondering about the logic of being made aware of attackers, via an attack by goblins, and then being at a penalty for the realization. Is there some mechanic that would guarantee that my active perception would trump (hate that word) my passive perception? I love Lost Mines (I've made my own cool tweaks) but when I test it for myself prior to game play I just wind up killing everyone in the ambush every single time. For your time, and experience, I offer this beautiful video:

    D&D is like a bus. The DM is driving as the PCs saying where they want to go. If you can wrap your head around that, you don't need passive perception.

    We have spells with ranges up to at least 300 ft...
    We have rangers that can shoot their bows in excess of 500 ft.
    WHY DO DMs NOT GIVE US A CHANCE TO SEE ANYTHING FURTHER AWAY THAN 60 FT?
    In daylight, outdoors on a clear day.

    • @Cxdfc
      @Cxdfc 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      DMG has visible ranges outdoors. On a clear day with no terrain in the way, a character can see 2 miles
      (10,000 feet)
      As to why encounters don’t take usually place past 120ft? DMs want melee characters to play in combat as well. 5 rounds whee the paladin/barbarian twiddles their thumbs, or splits from the party to dash half a mile is very boring. and makes ranged characters nigh invincible for that combat
      If you want some long ranges where all players participate, ask your DM if they can include a war scene like a castle siege. Melee can cleave through hordes, bowmen and spellcasters can use full range, all combatants are in some type of danger of a siege weapon.

    • @heroesdelve
      @heroesdelve 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I give my players Range depending on the terrain/setting/event happening. dense forest with heavy rain & wind may not even be 60 feet, whereas a sunny day in the flat plains may be 100's of yards.

    Hi, 1st time I see your channel, I have a question: If a player do an active perception check, lets say to look for a hidden door, and it's lower than passive perception, does passive perception replace the player's roll?

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, exactly how Jeremy Crawford has mentioned. You can change that if you want.

  • @TheRedHorseman1208

    Something I'm sorta having trouble wrapping my head around.. How do you handle/narrate a failed goblin ambush if just 1 of the goblins is spotted? As in the rest rolled much higher for stealth but frikkin Butterfoot Gobta over here can't be quiet? Does the ambush happen anyway just without surprise?

    • @amidark6518
      @amidark6518 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If one is found, unless the others are hidden, I would say the ambush is blown, otherwise they may just think the one goblin is there and not the rest. Totally as a DM, it's up to you how that goes because I don't know the terrain in which they are ambushing.
      Generally my gobles live in the ground in a certain kind of area and it's pretty known if the players asked the centaurs because they wage war against them so they could burst from the ground in secret holes. But that's my game.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I suggest using only one stealth check for all the Goblins. You don't need to roll for every monster. Otherwise use a group Stealth check and if half are successful, the whole group is successful with the Stealth check.

  • @polvotierno
    @polvotierno 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    As a DM, I roll in secret a Wisdom saving throw instead of passive perception. Proficiency in wisdom saving throw counts too. The check really is a saving throw...... Oh and by the way, DMs are the masters of meta-gaming. : )

    Worst situation I had was when my paladin was watching during a travel, cuz she knew they have been observed by cultists all the way.
    Next thing that happened was I rolling no perception check, being suprised, and our rogue that had passive perception 16 not being surprised. I really HATE passive perception, to me it would be better to have it as 3.5, just roll the dice...

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That situation does make sense. If your Paladin is watching the road for danger, why didn't passive perception get used. There is a very good reason to use passive perception, it just doesn't seem like it when the characters are surprised.

  • @helldrake77777
    @helldrake77777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Frankly I don't like passive perception, except as a DC for a stealth roll to go up against. Personally I find it frustrating when I tell my players to roll perception, and the one guy who has 22 passive perception goes "but what about my passive perception". A nit-pick I guess, but I find it vexing.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand. It's happened to me too. Wait till they face a monster they can't detect with false appearance and try explaining why 22 passive perception doesn't help them.

  • @fhuber7507

    The DM's job is to metagame...
    He has to design the adventure based on giving the PCs a chance to survive.
    This is why we don't drop 12 angry chromatic dragons on a level 1 party of 4 characters.
