    Thanks for the clear explanation! there’s so much D+D shite on TH-cam, this is a refreshing change. Reading the book isn’t immediately clear that init=dex, why, who knows? Much better to have these videos :)

      Thank you Paul. It's often expected that people will join a game and the experienced players will help you with the rules. I want the mystery of D&D rules to disappear.

    I use the NPC NP slots for Initiative. I feel that it makes for better tactics as well as helps the party learn to work together. Do u guys use the one out of the book or Slots?

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use many types of initiative, but cover only the basic system in this video.

    I have a question. How do you know what is the monsters initiative?

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rosa. The Dexterity modifier is the monsters Initiative bonus.

  • @djflaspoint
    @djflaspoint 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    what happens wen you have several goblins or several different monsters would you roll for each type of monster or each monster individually. thank you love the videos short and sweet staying on topic :)

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Flashpoint The rule book states that you make only one initiative roll for a group of goblins. If you have a few different types of monsters, an initiative roll is made for each type. Don't roll for each individual monster, this will create a lot more work for you as the DM.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +howtod&d If you don't want to track more than one initiative roll for a range of different monsters, then select the lowest initiative for the monsters and make a single roll to represent the whole gang of different monsters (this is not an official method, but may make your life a lot easier.

    • @djflaspoint
      @djflaspoint 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +howtod&d thank you for the quick reply and clarifying this rule, easy to understand. 5e is a much faster paced set of gaming rules compared to 3.5e or 2e. I'm enjoying the rest of your rules explanation videos. I'm going to share them with my D&D group

    Question. What if I am playing a rogue, and I tend to have good initiative, so I end up going first, but I don't want to? I'd rather wait for another party member to get close to the enemy so that when I go I will get my sneak attack. Is there a way to wait for a bit on my turn?

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only if you take the ready action and state that you shoot when an enemy is engaged in melee combat or some such thing. You cannot hold your turn like older versions of the game.

    • @steelbeard151
      @steelbeard151 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +howtod&d Thanks. I will look into the ready action. I was thinking more about melee than ranged, though.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can ready a melee attack.

    Did I miss where you said how to find out what your initiative mod is?

    • @HowtoRPG

      Yes. Initiative modifier is the same as the Dexterity modifier.

    You probably wont see this, but say Jeff had 16, Mark had 14, Evan had 8, but there are THREE goblins in play who i rolled to get a 10. I understand that you make a "lump roll" for all three goblins, but will the order go; Jeff, Mark, ALL THREE GOBLINS AT ONCE, and then Evan? Or will it go: Jeff, Mark, Goblin, Evan, Goblin, Mark, Goblin, Evan, Goblin Etc.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jeff, Mark, Goblins then Evan.

  • @sunshinepurple1043

    So initiative is just seeing who goes first?

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. It's a turn based game.

    Seems kind of ridicules. Because, the modifier of who gets to attack first MOSTLY based on the roll. The difference between 3 and even a 6 is inconsequential in the end. I would think who reacts first would be an important stat to focus on.
