Thrifting Flea Markets & Estate Sales! Vintage Tips & Tricks

- We're scooping up bargains and getting great ideas in this video! A last-minute appointment near Indianapolis leads us to the only estate sale in town, a large artist's home and studio with decades of books, art, garage items, kitchenware and surprises in hidden places! We send uranium glass, a carboy, a Kik-Step and blown stemware to the hold pile, then meet the delightful folks running the sale. The owner explains the joy to be found in estate sales and the importance of resurrecting antique and vintage items, while giving us some great deals!
Then it's on to Martinsville, Indiana, where I deliver the goods to a collector and take her tip to hit the Traderbaker's Flea Market in town! This is a huge place where local antique and vintage goods go to be sold (amongst everything from garage sale junk to new ATV's), and we find both real antiques and cool vintage that catches our eye all over! Thrifty prices on a 1970s designer stand, Victorian furniture, store display racks and wild MCM pottery and glass are enough to fill a shopping cart, and we take a lot home to show our collectors!
Knowledge is power for collectors, and we get some great tips and a fair warning in this video! We talk about why we even look at damaged stuff when it's new to us, and learn together how to tell the difference between a set of fake "1950s" wall pockets and the real thing. A chance encounter with a successful storage locker reseller tips us off on what lockers are more likely to have vintage stuff, and we leave edified and prepared for more antiquing adventures in the future!

Hey, George Fans let's Share his video with a friend or 2. They will love George just as much!
Thank you George ! 😊
Wonderful whirlwind tour.
Still have my New View from the '70s, 😊
Oh That Mirror Screen! That is the Prince of Wales Plume! I LOVE THAT!!!!
George, I appreciate your integrity
It cracked me up when you said you only needed the shade from that bicentennial lantern lol
I’m always on the hunt for either a lantern that will fit a shade or shade that will fit a lantern lol
Dang it! I was on my way to that same estate sale Friday to look for some vintage art supplies for my daughter but I got sidetracked at Southport Antique Mall (I am a new booth owner there thanks to your inspiration and education). Would have loved to run into you at the sale, I probably would have fainted lol. You are correct, Flipside is awesome, I go to their sales often.
Kimberly - we are already booked for most of January! See you next month:)
So helpful to know the value of items, it’s a challenge to keep up on current prices, thanks
YAY!!!!!
Thanks George. You’re such a good teacher.
Yes stealing ashtrays was a thing. My mum always use to have one that she liked from the pub and brought home. Also taking glasses from the pub is something we do here in the uk. Great video.
I always enjoy your videos but I have to say the last two deserve 2 👍🏻👍🏻up!
Hi George, I do very well with vintage sewing patterns and have sold them up to $180 Au. Some are more collectable than others but they are a good bread and butter item
Hey George, finally made a live. At the beginning.... Yayy!
Always glad to see you!
I liked the brass leaf wreath you picked up
PEEK (metal) polish does a great job removing light scratches and scrapes from plastics like melamine and lucite. It's also great for polishing glass, too.
Loved the video lot of nice pieces
Thanks so much 😊
TY for the tip about using your palm to check for edge problems! I also love California Pottery
You're welcome, it's saved me making a lot of mistakes
Love Flipside! I agree Jess and her staff are first class all the way. Great estate sales.
Yes, stealing ashtrays was a thing back then. I have an ashtray marked "Stolen from Durhams Restaurant, Wytheville, Va," Mr. Durham said he had so many stolen that he had them mase that way; So my Grandmother stole one.
I help set up estate sales. I love it. It's hard work, but rewarding at the same time.
Agree! I work for Flipsides. A labor of love for sure
@lauracowman6335 we are currently setting a sale in the home of a man who recently passed away. He had the home built in 1987 for $147k, .65 acres with a pool. It goes on the market next week, probably around 850k, and it is all original. We have set at least 4 8' tables with double rows of over 1000 records. There are a good 10,000 aviation magazines, dozens of model car kits, still new in the box, and the list goes on. It should be a $45k sale, if the MCM furniture sells. Oh, and the sound system was purchased 2 years ago for $12,000. The man kept every box for every single piece of electronics, has the certificates of authenticity for dozens of professionally framed prints, paintings, and autographed aviation posters. It's a crazy good sale.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and the variety of items you pick. I have been seeing only glass from other sites.
Glad you made it to a Flipside Estate sale!! It was so good finally meeting you. Hopefully we’ll see you again next year
I like your thoughts that you shared. Finding new homes for treasures and useful items is something I wish more people would try to embrace.
Love your jacket!
@@Brabronacusthat was actually the owner of Flipside Estates, Jess Bidwell. She’s our boss and a fantastic person. I’ll pass your message on to her. Ty!
@@cchaffinccthat was my boss, Jess Bidwell. We’re all jealous of her Pendleton jacket!😂
@@lauracowman6335 Oops! I just knew it was Pendleton 😊
New subscriber. I learned so much today. 😊 I saw a lot of items my grandparents had in their homes.
Merry Christmas George.
Merry Christmas to you too!
The pean and ink bird of prey picture would have been nice to see.
3:05 oh my gawd. I was born in ‘89 and I was so not prepared for childhood flashbacks all bc of *that* step stool. Did I have them at home and at school? Maybe it was in each classroom? Idk, but I definitely remember them even the weight. Sitting and using your legs to release childhood energy and also stubbing your tiny toes with that heavy base😂. At least I did hehe 🤷🏻♀️
George here
Merry Christmas George!
Thanks for the video . Happy holidays to you. 😊
I almost flipped when I saw the display of Pfaltzgraff Yorktown @ 46:51 because it had the original pedestal coffee cups I had as a newlywed in the ‘70s. (On the bottom shelf.) Being married to a military man, we moved often and the cups eventually broke. I could never find cups like that ever again. And could never find replacements online, so I just got rid of the set. I honestly would have driven out there for those cups if I still had the same dish set!😂
That Rockingham teapot was probably Harker Pottery
I learn each and every video. Thank you George..appreciate you bringing us along.. cheers to the new year🎉
Filpside is my favorite for Estate sales! They are always organized and have the best staff!
I have a salt and pepper shaker set that looks like the butter dish
I love that you found and spoke about Couroc. I just found a couple of smaller pieces over the weekend and began researching last night. I really like the look of them.
My sister and I had a pink version of the elephant toy box. I always wondered what happened to it. We used to empty it out and play inside of it. 😅 we loved it so much!
I love that blue inside delft bowl
This was a fantastic video. Shop much great knowledge ... you were on fire 🔥
Thanks so much, I hope you and Xeno have the merrier of Christmas ❤❤❤
I'm so glad! I felt inspired. Merry Christmas to you too
I was visiting a friend in Terra Haute, In, and I found some great stuff there, and on the drive there at some small town Goodwill's!
I have a dealer friend there who gets great stuff
I love the vintage art easel! What a great sale!
Was stealing ashtrays a thing? Yes indeed. In fact, before we’d leave a restaurant I had to frisk my mother, and this included Room Service items (ie: adorable little teapots). Not only ashtrays, but creamers, salt and peppers, and dishes that held powdered creamers. It was all fair game. It wasn’t just my mom, but most of the little old ladies I knew. Interestingly, this did not happen with the little old men.
But, but, they were so cute!!
Always something. Ashtrays, hotel keys, pens….
Yes George, many PEOPLE do by old patterns and vintage fabrics, notions. I am a major collector. But buy in batches, cheaply. FOLKS def buy even up to 1970 and some 1980'S patterns, and older. Especially larger size patterns......
That makes sense, I have a friend who buys and sells them. I thought there were some in that batch potentially old enough to be of interest for vintage fashion folks now
Great video George.
Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays to you & everyone!
Love the video. Thanks.
So enjoyed this trip with you after being busy with Holidays approaching. These stores are all over our region and you found a good one. They’re hit and miss in larger towns, but smaller out of the way locations are much better for finds. If I don’t get to watch again before Christmas I hope you and Zino have a Merry one. ❤ oh I used to find good shops down around Somerset haven’t been in years. The lake homes would get all the old stuff and now they’re clearing them out to make way for progress and new owners.
Love you Jesse ❣️
George, the pottery in the basement is North Carolina pottery, mostly by the Cole family. The red pie plate is the best piece, but watch those edges!
Oh, that's great to know, I should've followed my hunch and gotten some I suppose! I should've known from the scratched tri-spider mark base I guess!
@TheAntiqueNomad I've collected and sold for years
Wild George, that was an absolutely buriant place to be. You really found some meat stuff. I just love shops like that. Add safe travels.😊❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
You & that vender mentioned were talking about buying abandoned storage units. Another thing to look for is locations that do Not allow corrosive chemicals to be stored there, such a Pool Supplies. Alot of those chemicals cause severe rust & staining to your stored goods. Note, most locations Claim to not allow these things. But seldom really watch for them. But the climate controlled ones are better about it.
Those trees are great and they are fat like trees should be. Have a great day. Happy Holidays to you and yours
Hi George! Love the triple mirror and a large red bowl with scalloping.
I thought that bowl was great too. What a super color with a great shape.
I have a washstand like that one. I have it set up as a drink/barstand. With S hooks to hang cups where the towel rock is.
Good evening, George! I sent you an email when the shaker set was delivered...don't know if you saw it or not. It is fantastic, and I'm more than pleased with it! We have one of the old water bottles here chocked full of pennies. I could really use one of those rolling stepstools. I actually have some men's fashion patterns from the 1970s...with bellbottom pants in them. That Sheraton Revival corner shelf would definitely come in handy here. I liked that mod art painting. It reminded me of Jackson Pollock, and I love Pollock's work. I have an oak wash stand that has two top levels. The lower level has the door in that compartment for the chamber pot. It has a towel bar over the larger section, and a two-rung bar section for washcloths over the lower section. I could use those big iron wagon wheels. The tri-fold mirror looked like it had Prince of Wales feathers as the design on the glass. I have my great-grandfather's shoe lasts, stand and cobbler's hammer. Loved the cast iron kettle. I'm really proud of the one I got from you! That small chest of drawers was fantastic! It would've been really tempting for me to buy it. There were tons of interesting items at the estate sale and the antiques mall! Thanks for the take-along!
I'm relieved it finally arrived! I always have prized that set in my collection too. The bottles always sell as penny receptacles, I had to empty one in an estate situation and it was...heavy. Bellbottoms, I wore them but only off the rack! Love corner shelves and Sheraton is always pleasant and straightforward without over ornamenation to mee. The MCM painting did have a Pollock-esque aspect! Wagon wheels attract me but they have to be cheap because they're too large for me to keep long...it's different when you have a nice big place for them! Correct about that feather etch, I regret a bit that I didn't offer her $100, I know that would sell in Florida but also...heavy! The theme for the evening. Thank you for having fun with me this evening!
Hi George. Great video. I loved that little jacket. So cute. I have a small collection of vintage baby clothes but they are getting harder to find. Val.Australia 🐨
Thanks friend! Be blest☦️in the New Year‼️👩🏻🦳♥️🫵🏻🌲
Flipside is absolutely one of the best Estate Sale companies around Indianapolis. I was really sad I had to miss this onewith that many books, it was my kind of sale.
They impressed me greatly
That was fun thanks George California
❤❤❤
❤
I just recently purchased 2 large pieces of Holmegaard glass Per Lutken signed one 1960 the other 1961. I paid $15 for both and sold them to someone who truly appreciated them for $50
I heard a big dealer in glass tell a customer to put a little oil in a vase to remove the filmy bottom.
I trust the guy by his success, so you should try it George.
Interesting! Did he say what kind of oil?
I used WD-40 to get the film out of a swung vase. Everything else failed. Thanks George!
Love your channel. Learning so very much, thank you. OK, when you was at Traderbaker's Flea Market in Martinsville, Indiana you bought the Whipster Cocktail Mixer. You mentioned that the Patent reflects the late 1940's; how do you know that? What is it about that patent # that hints to 1940's? Thank you
💖
That orange stool.....i had an avacado green set of 4 stools and a table when i was in jr. High i hot at an estate sale for $5. i still kick myself for selling it when i left for college. I did sell it for $30 but its worth such more now and i would have loved it for my kiddos as they were growing up.
Brush Glo Art on the pink pottery, G.
Hi George ! Thanks for another wonderful adventure . I was wondering if you, have you seen any aluminum vintage Christmas trees this year ? Especially the Pom Pom ones ? How often have you found those ?
Love that butter dish!
Let me know if you ever see Pfaltzgraff in blue and yellow flower pattern. Thank you!
Bong cleaner would remove stains 😮
It can work well, true! Sometimes it etches glass though.
That was the Lawson YMCA.
I really like the furniture would you call that a shell mirror as always great show
It looked like a shell or fan to me!
The yellow Pfaltzgraff pattern is called "Village", not Villager.
I wonder how much you need to have to start out and buy storage lockers? I want so badly to be able to sell antiques. I have so many different figureines and I know my duaghter doesn't want to deal with it some day, so I'd love to have some sort of a sale. I'm attached to all of it because of a childhood episode in m life where everyone took my stuff without asking so I don't let it out now and I know it's old. I'm out of room so I don't buy anything unless it's a cat figurine or an old good movie on dvd.
The Joan Jett album liner got left behind? (sigh) I love estate sales; they send old things to new homes. It's recycling old-school.
🤗🇨🇦👍
Какая красота продается и так дешево. Можно найти раритеты.
Нам повезло, что люди смогли сохранить их, чтобы мы могли наслаждаться ими сейчас!
Stealing ashtrays was a thing. L0l It was considered free advertisement. Hotels quit putting their names on towels first.
Why doesn’t it start on time?
We allow a 5-minute grace period for people to get in to the chat, two minute grace before live sales on The Antique Nomad Live channel. The premieres start 5 pm Pacific time, when a lot of people are just getting off work and need a minute to get on the channel.
Have you ever broken anything in a video? I think your awesome, new profile but was a follower on my other profile, mt.baker Washington
