    This is "Phase 1" of the Odyssey Camper project, converting the Honda Odyssey into a camper. Phase 1 shows the quick and cheap route to a functional van conversion, with no permanent modifications. If you want to head to nomadland, that's your fastest route. Phase 2 will be a semi-permanent build-up including bed platform, house battery, etc. This was filmed right after I got back from two weeks in the Badlands and BlackHills of South Dakota (plus Devils Tower!)

      Thanks! All of the Odyssey's have similar dimensions, but the 05' forward have a split rear seat. That means you can put a cot/bed on one side and leave the other side up to sit in at night. Of the earlier generation (2nd gen) Odyssey's I'd focus on finding a 2004'. I give some reasons on my OdysseyCamper blog, here:
      odysseycamper.com/2017/10/07/what-to-look-for-when-buying-a-second-generation-honda-odyssey/
      Some good deals can be found in a 2nd gen Odyssey with around 160,000 miles. Having said all of that, if I change your question to "what Honda Ody is good for TRAVELLING", then I'd suggest a 3rd or 4th generation. They drive more like a car and have added safety features like side curtain airbags. They also tend to get a few more MPG. But in my opinion, all the Odysseys make good campers for one or two people. I hope this helps!

      Odyssey Camper Thanks!... but did they shrink them down? I plan to look at newer models but I saw how they shrunk the CR-V (mutters).

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The outside length is slightly different, but the interior space is VERY close. 2000-2018 Odysseys will all fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood behind the front seats.

      Odyssey Camper, excellent information to know. Have you done a sideby side review of the Odyssey vs Pacifica vs Sienna vs Sedona minivans?
      Why do you prefer Odyssey?
      I just watched a 2018 Ody review trying to sort things out and there are so many bells and whistles I couldnt believe this was a minivan. I wish they had an AWD though somewhere.
      I had been looking at a Nissan NV 3500 high roof. I want something that can go between camper and cargo and maybe hauling / towing when needed.

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I work in the powertrain industry, which means that I get to see how the engine and transmission are built and I get to see some of the quality issues. That biases me toward the Honda and Toyota. They also have the best resale values. That said, there really aren't any BAD vehicles built anymore, if you compare them to what everyone was building in the 80s. I know people that swear by the Fiat (um Chrysler) vans and I've owned a couple of non-Sedona Hyundais that were great. So, I'll say in the end you should find the one with the features that you like. If you want to know more about why I chose a Honda Odyssey for my mini RV, check out this blog post: odysseycamper.com/2017/08/10/why-did-i-pick-a-honda-odyssey/

    Just watched your overview on SUVRVing… great overview. We bought a 2019 and threw a IKEA “Balkarp” folding couch in it, after removing all the seats. Built a leveling floor for the well in the back and that’s about it… an “almost no-build” thing. Thanks for covering everything so well in that review.

    My husband and I did a cross country trip in our odyssey, not set up quite the same, but we had a cooler also, cooked all our meals, coldest night was 0 degrees, we had some amazing weather all across the country, beautiful lightning storms.We went from Seattle to Cape Breton Island and back through the south. We had two bikes on the back and rode nearly every day. That odyssey is still running beautifully and is my home away from home!

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jane Watson that’s awesome! Cape Breton is beautiful in the summertime! There is so much to see on this continent. I hope to make it to Washington, Idaho, Oregon, and Montana next year (although not in that order, LOL). Last four states of the continental 48, that I have not been to.

      Just don't drive it all over the place. A Sienna is so much more reliable, but for living in and not too much driving, a 2009 Odyssey might be okay. I think it has a little more room than the Sienna when you measure across from door to door in back above the arm rests. More nooks for books. :)

      Camp cot in my Sienna with 4” trifold mattress. I put down 3rd row and took out one of 2nd row. Cot fits perfectly behind 2nd seat folded up. Put a 3drawer plastic cabinet that is perfect fit by cot in the back. Plenty of storage underneath cot and cabinet. Just need better reading light. I just use for camping, not living in. As a 70 year old female I stay in state park campgrounds primarily and most sites have electric and water.

    Thank-you for taking the time to educate us. I just bought a 2007 Odyssey and came across your channel while surfing for information on how to use my windshield sprayer haha. I plan on attending RTR next year and I'm trying to decide if it would work with my 85 lb. dog. I will test out your design this summer to see if it would work. If you keep that side seat intact- where do you put the bathroom?

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cynthia Hicks Good choice! The 07 drives more like a car and has additional safety features like side curtain airbags. On my 13, the rear seat splits and so I’ve put the bathroom behind the front passenger seat and the water bucket behind the rear seat. When parked, I move the water to the front passenger seat. Your dog should have room on the floor, but that’s a LOT of dog. I think this is what you are asking, but if I got it wrong, please LMK. Thanks for watching! Be sure to subscribe and hit the bell to be notified when there is a new video; the next video starts the bed build in my 13’.

      Janice McKinnie if you can find an car audio center (we used to call them stereo shops), they can do the install for you. As far as the heater goes, I use this small one. amzn.to/2UKGSv7 The heat is a tiny fraction of what you would get with a propane heater, but I find it keeps my minivan warm enough if the front seats are curtained off. The propane ones are too much in a minivan if you ask me. They are better for a full sized panel van. Thanks for watching!

    Darren - I found your channel and wanted to say what an outstanding job with all these videos! Thanks! I do have a quick question about the interior dimensions of the Honda Odyssey. I'm going to do some trips and use my recumbent trike (a tadpole-style = two wheels in front, one in back) - an example would be a CaTrike Trail recumbent trike. The Trail is quite wide (39 inches) and long (about 80 inches) and I want to keep the trike inside a vehicle where I can also sleep in it when the need arises. I have a tri-fold mattress that is about 26 inches wide so I figure I'd need a vehicle that would have a 64" width to accommodate the two front trike wheels and the mattress - the narrower part of the vehicle at the wheel wells would handle the mattress and the back wheel and seat frame side-by-side. I've looked at different vans and the Oddysey does seem wide enough and long enough from the front seats to the rear hatch. I'm curious if you think the Odyssey would suit my needs?
    I've been looking at really reliable vehicles and a few Toyota models (the Highlander, the Sienna, maybe the 4Runner) come to mind. The Odyssey also is on the list. Any thoughts about the Hyundai Palisade, the Kia Carnival or Telluride, or Chrysler Pacifica?
    Thanks in advance for any thoughts and once again, thanks for producing great content!

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your kind words! Forgive me is this seems brief as I have to answer from my phone. As a rule, any modern minivan will hold a 4x8 foot sheet of plywood with the possible exception of the Pacifica (not sure about that one). So you have the length to do what you want. The width of 48” is as measured at the rear floor. Partially dictated by the wheel wells. So to get the width you want, you’d need to be between the side door. There you typically get 60”. The Sienna is also very close to those measurements. As for what brand of van you go width, I’d get what you like to drive since you’ll be doing a lot of that. ALL vans are built better than they were 20 years ago. That said, I’ve personally seen so many quality issues with Chrysler products, I would avoid those. Just my personal observation, some people consider them to be reliable. Thanks for watching!

      it was very basic... but it could fold back to the 5 seat configuration (cut the 4x8 full sheet of 3/4 plywood and put tabs on it to fold up and floor storage when not in use and bent metal braces in steel class in school to stabilize when in use, built custom boxes that were... not so level with the rear seats fully folder down... but it worked and gave me awesome storage on the bottom!) when I wasn't camping and had to transport passengers- I actually sold it as is to a young Australian couple who loved it and used to explore all of the west cost. Never used reflex for camping- just blackout curtains cut and Velcroed to the windows.. they worked for privacy but sucked big time in the winter- plus the rear windows were always tricky with the motors in the way
      what did you do for the rear vents- they get in the way of putting the panel on fully- how did you cover that?
      how does your half bed work? I got a huge photon hopefully I can hold wdith wise... may plan on folding seats up and doing the "half frame" it again but I had them folded all the way over on the voyager- have to fold them up this time to get maximum storage. also the second gens floor isn't totally flat so the frame bit is tricky. how did you make it work on the second gen?

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I just noticed that I missed one of your other comments. First, I'm glad you are liking the cot! Just had a friend offer me the sofa and I said, "no thanks, I'll sleep in the van". The Coleman is very comfy. So, I just responded to how I got the cot level on the other video (should be in your notifications). For the curtains, on the front, the light leakage doesn't bother me because I get up when it's light and at night, if I"m stealth camping, I leave the lights out. On the side blackout panels, my first arrangement stayed on with suction cups. It's written up here odysseycamper.com/convert-your-mini-van-for-camping/diy-insulated-window-panels-stealth-camping/ but I found the panels a little unweildy to pack. So, I now use this arrangement, which stays in place by friction because they are superlight. odysseycamper.com/convert-your-mini-van-for-camping/simple-privacy-window-panels-odyssey-minivan-rv-ph2/ I like the second version better and would only use the first version again if I were going to be where it was below 20F.

      Winfield Sam I use thin cable with crimp on ring lugs. I then put the cable through the floor seat mounts and a screw and nut through the ring lugs ties it down. However, once the cot is in and the driver’s seat is back, it’s not going anywhere. You’d have to roll the van to dislodge it. Thanks for watching!

      These are 120mm computer fans that I bought off Amazon. There are a couple different kinds, but this link will bring you to the exact model, which is the quiet type. amzn.to/2Jmuibb Unfortunately, I did not document the fan portion of building the panels, but there IS a photo at the bottom of this post: odysseycamper.com/convert-your-mini-van-for-camping/diy-insulated-window-panels-stealth-camping/ I used the 12V from the dome light, but if you have a 12V "cigarette lighter" socket in the back you can pick up the power from there. The fans have mounting grommets at the corners and can held onto the panel with regular screws and nuts. I cut holes in the panels that were slightly smaller than the fans and used RTV sealant (aquarium sealant) to affix screen to the other side. That way I wouldn't be encouraging bugs to come in :)

    Has the ground clearance height ever been an issue with dirt roads on the way to hikes?

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yes. The one thing that limits the Odyssey is the ground clearance. It’s about 5” which makes it hard to clear the rocks on rough trails. My NV200 with non stock tires had 9”, which made a huge difference-enough to keep up with Jeeps on dry trails. That said, I’ve done some gnarly trails in the Odyssey, using only a skid plate. Currently, I’m adding a 3” lift which should help to get deeper. Everything is a compromise, but you can go to most trailheads with an Odyssey and a decent set of tires.

      Hi Deborah! The fans I used are this model ($32 for two on Amazon) amzn.to/2nKACk7 If you go to this post on OdysseyCamper.com, you can see how I incorporated them on some rigid window panels. odysseycamper.com/convert-your-mini-van-for-camping/diy-insulated-window-panels-stealth-camping/ I didn't do a detailed how-to on the fans, but there is a photo that might help. Basically, I cut a hole for the fan and held it on with screws and nuts. I also put a piece of screen on the outside to keep the bugs out. The trick is to make the panel large enough that it does not sit completely against the glass, but rather, against the plastic trim. Then the window mechanism can operate.

      It’s important to make sure the fluid changes were done on any Odyssey. They require more frequent fluid changes than some owners were used to, so they often forgot to do it, leading to more issues. I’ve owned half a dozen Odysseys and have never had an issue.

      I should clarify that. The candle (especially the 3-wick kind), does put out a significant amount of heat and with the window panels in place, I'm comfortable into the 40s. BUT, it's not "heating" to van to 70 or anything. On really cold nights, I use a 250W electric heater. If you are going into the 30s, I'd suggest a small propane or bigger electric heater (if you have external power available).

    • @OdysseyCamper
      @OdysseyCamper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Ben, I don't think you'd have anything to fear from a few candles because your vehicle is far from airtight. Honestly though, it's not a ton of heat, so you would probably be better off with a small inverter (pure sine) and an electric blanket. With electric heat like the 250W unit I mentioned, there is of course no CO produced. I have a CO detector in the van and it's never gone off from a candle. It's always a good idea to have a carbon monoxide detector because there are other reasons you could have CO in the vehicle (exhaust leak, exhaust pipe obstructed by snow, someone running a generator near you). $20 is not a lot of money to spend to make sure you'll wake up in the morning ;-)
