This solo female is sure thinking ahead In anticipation of continued escalating rents in the future. She converted her Honda Odyssey into a camper and did it on a budget of under $250, not including a power bank and solar panel. But, even the power system she found was a bargain. Many nomads I have met don't even use a portable generator or solar panels. Instead they opt for a simple hand held device to charge their phones or a small inverter that can be plugged into their vehicle. Katie from Kamping Katie demonstrates that you don't have to break the bank to turn your vehicle into a tiny home on wheels. In this video Katie shows how she enjoys a comfortable bed, shower, and even mini kitchen on what some might spend for a night out on the town. One of my favorite things in this mini camper is the valve on the portable shower. What's your favorite thing about this small but smart build? Leave a comment and let me know.

This is the kind of "builds" I enjoy. I find nothing fun or interesting watching the builds that are spending 5, 10, 15 thousand dollars but showing me how someone takes a plywood sheet and puts a 5 dollar finish on it wows me.

I love the set up but just a word of advice. I would suggest getting a carbon monoxide detector since you have the propane tank inside. Even when turning it off when not in use it can have slow leaks which can be deadly. No criticism, just a word out of love.

“I will not work two jobs to pay rent.”
Amen! And two and three jobs is what it’s taking for many, many people. Ridiculous! My husband and I decided we were DONE working 80+ hrs/week and still barely living hand to mouth, so we bought our rv and hit the road with our son. Now we’re making no compromises in life, plus we’re putting so much in our retirement accounts now. We were barely trickling anything into our savings before; some months, it was nothing. We go where the work is and we have our picks of jobs whereas before, stuck in my hometown, prospects were miserable. I have so little stress now!
I’m sharing this video with my grown son so he can see this can be done even more cheaply than he and I believed. I really don’t want him getting trapped in the rent cycle as a young person.
Thank you so much for your practical, feminine perspective on van life. I can’t express to you how helpful you are.

My husband , son and I moved out of an expensive Chicago suburb and moved to a cheaper state. We went from paying $9,000 a year in property taxes on a third of an acre, to paying $600 a year on 5 acres. And we also grow a lot of our own food and have chickens, so that is a saver. And in general our cost of living is so much less than before. We were both working 50-60 hours a week and now I’m retired and my husband works 40 hours but will be retiring in 3 years. And we plan on traveling.

That is exactly what happened to me last year. My landlord was older and became unable to handle her affairs. The property where I had lived for 12 years went from her daughter Tammy to her other daughter Cheryl and then to John her brother. I was assured that they did not want to sell the property. The house was built in 1931 and had many vintage features. Then one day out of the blue I was informed that the house was being sold. I was stupid enough to trust what I was told about them not selling. Anyway I had some money saved and very blessed to have found a nice place to live and the rent is very reasonable.

As a solo part-time lady car camper, I love my solo adventures to explore, really prefer it. I have invited family and friends and they have joined me more than 3 times per year, but I have to say, nothing like doing it by yourself. You are able to do what you want, not have to deal with anyone that doesn't want to explore. Company is good but freedom is better. I like her attitude because she is aware she is tied to a homebase but has produced a plan B, to improve her life before a situation is dumped in her lap. I think she is a brilliant inspiration not to just accept and settle. Have a plan B. Even her dog is living the life 🤣😂

Hi, I'm so glad we started our full time RV life in 2015 - we did it at the right time! The crowds weren't as bad, gas wasn't so expensive (we thought $2.99 was expensive!) and camping costs were very low - not now though - gas is climbing everyday, apt. rentals are untouchable and RV parks are crowded and expensive. But we found a beautiful place on the Coast for $500 a month +elec (which is nothing) - it's the only way to live these days - thank god we don't have any kids or pets - just us two in a 27' Class C - home is where you park it!

I strongly urge anyone doing van life full time to try to establish places with either friends or family that can be a shelter in the storm so to speak if needed whether for a mental health break or in case of circumstances such as when Covid closed down so many camping options. Life really can be a little less scary if you do some basic planning. I was just exposing to someone on disability (less than a year) that their goal might include trying to have a tad bit left in their bank account at the end of the month. Sounds impossible to do on $850 a month, but the right attitude, and willingness makes all the difference. Katie realizes that things can change in the blink of the eye and she’s using a lot of wisdom now to prepare.

I absolutely agree. Even a little planning can greatly reduce stress and a financial cushion is really an essential part of van life, or any lifestyle for that matter. Even on disability there are ways to put away a little. Bartering is a great tool . One of the things I was suggesting to someone just the other day was to.perhaps make and sell dinners to others on the road since they are a great cook. A good home cooked.meal is always appreciated. There are ways to make a little extra but it does take some out of the box thinking.

I love it! I just sold my 2008 Honda Odyssey I bought new before I became very sick and had to stop working. I got a newer Honda Odyssey. It’s a 2015 so newer and a few less miles. I’m disabled now so I don’t drive much. My new van has a sunroof and a built in cooler. Leather seat. And its gray my first one was white. I do miss my first Honda Odyssey because I took my daughter and several neighborhood children to school in it, sweet memories. But it’s time for a new faze. My youngest is about to graduate pharmacy school. I never thought I could get a new van before my daughters finished school but a little money came my way , just enough to upgrade. But I’m telling you Honda Odyssey ‘s are fantastic! And her 2006 will be on the road 20 years from now. Very smart lady ! My husband and I bought a class A last year. But we decided that we really want a bus to convert. A small bus. So we are selling the class A and getting a short bus to convert, I would even consider a box truck. Camping with Katie, You could add a water filter where you have the water flow valve and use it as a one hour shower and this simply just recycles your water and it continues to flow and also put a sock on your water ( put a sock over the water intake) To help keep nasty stuff out.

    Hi Katie,
G'day from WA (Western Australia!!), I applaud your self sufficiency, but please add a carbon monoxide/Carbon dioxide (CO2) detector as the gas burner alight produces Carbon Monoxide, it needs to be used outdoors, or you can add a ceiling exhaust vent fan as carbon monoxide is lighter than air, it will collect in the ceiling indoors, with nowhere (no exhaust vent through the roof) to escape, these emissions can make you sleepy and can potentially suffocate you in your sleep. So far with the door open in warmer weather, you have not been poisoned, but continuing to use it inside is NOT SAFE, these carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide (c02) detectors are not expensive, and you must Store gas bottles outside or on the roof rack or get a gas bottle storage box built with a hole in the floor of the Inside of the gas bottle storage box, hole that vents to the outside, for any carbon dioxide emissions, which are heavier than air to escape outside of your vehicle, a floorsafe modified to have a hole drilled through the floor of the vehicle, should do the trick, a ceiling exhaust fan above the cooktop will need a hole cut out of the roof, for the exhaust vent fan to let carbon monoxide fumes escape. These exhaust vent fans are only about $25 from eBay, you can install them yourself or a gas fitter or gas plumber can install the floor vents for carbon monoxide emissions to escape in the lowest part of your van, and put in a ceiling exhaust vent fan, but the gas bottle regulator or fittings, even a leaky hose you may not notice inside, can be a serious hazard. If you read the instructions of the camping stove, it should say NOT FOR USE INDOORS or not to be used inside a vehicle or in any un-ventilated Spaces inside an RV. Gas bottle storage box is a requirement for carrying any gas bottles in any RV, it's why you see them in seperate compartments accessed from outside on the side of camper trailers and motorhomes, they have a seperate doors on the side of vans and RV's, so that any leaks escape outside of the vehicle.
Be Safe! Get yourself a floor safe for your gas bottle, you will need to get a hole drilled through the floor, for any potential leaks to escape under and outside your van, but if you want to sell your van at a later stage, then you can have that hole patched and welded. At least them you can have the peace of mind of no safety Hazard from the gas bottle inside or gas or BUTANE GAS COOKTOP & the Carbon Monoxide emissions produced every time you light it.
I love you have rescued a senior dog! We have rescued 3 dogs ourselves We have done a DIY Toyota Coaster Bus Conversion, with secondhand furniture, new appliances and Solar panels & batteries from eBay, & we have added a separate indoor shower, an indoor composting toilet a recirculating shower filtration system which allows us to have as long a hot shower as we like, yet only use 30L of water each week (it cost just $700 to build, including the portable lpg instantaneous hws, (AU$160) to filter & sterilise the shower grey water, crystal clear and clean water, filtered to 0.5 of 1mivron, fine for showering, not for drinking or cooking. We have a 285L 12v solar compressor fridge freezer, & a Thetford Caprice LPG gas stove with a grill and oven. A full Off grid equipped motorhome, done all DIY except for the gas appliance fitting by another Gas fitter, with a gas compliance certificate for a LPG Stove fitted Inside a vehicle. If you read your camping gas cooktop instructions (or BUTANE GAS COOKTOP) the instructions will (should) unless they are in a foreign language (or "English" written by someone with English as a 2nd language) it SHOULD say MUST NOT be used indoors, or Inside a vehicle, without proper ventilation, any gas burner cooktop, the by product of a gas burner alight is carbon monoxide, so you must turn on an exhaust air vent anytime you light the gas cooktop or grill or oven.
We got gas compliance with certification and a vehicle modification plate in the gas bottle storage box, we have floor vents in the step riser, vented outside our bus, for the Carbon dioxide emissions which are heavier than air, and 12v exhaust vent fan, (you can add a ceiling vent which does not require 12v or any battery power to allow carbon monoxide which is lighter than air, so it will rise up to the ceiling, but will continue to fill the air until you assfixiate or suffocate, if it's trapped inside your vehicle. You must not Store gas bottles inside a vehicle either, a faulty regulator or are completely Self sufficient, and our cost of living is very low. It's Freedom and travel anywhere we like, heading up North to warm climate in the Winter, and further South in the wet season, we have heating & Air-conditioning for comfort, without a noisy fuel guzzling generator, our RV windmill gives us enough power to run our Solar fridge freezer, + our 12v LED lights + our 12v water pump and we carry 300L of water Under the bed, and a gas storage box, sealed internally we carry 2x 9L gas bottles that runs our HWS and our Gas Stove. We have a carbon monoxide And/or CO2 detector, for an alarm but we have both floor and ceiling vents for any carbon monoxide to escape outside, before any poisoning occurs. A gas stove like Katie's should only be used outside or with extractor air vents or in well ventilated spaces indoors. PLEASE GET A CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTOR!! AND ideally A 12v ceiling exhaust vent fan, and only use these butane and LPG cooktops(camp stove's), legally without the floor vents for carbon dioxide emissions (which are heavier than air) to escape outside of your van through,+ Whenever your gas stove is alight, the flame produces carbon monoxide, any LPG gas bottle must be stored in a vented gas storage box, sealed from the inside of your van, but it must have a hole which is vented outside your RV, for the Carbon dioxide emissions to escape, but if you want to be able to cook inside on a LPG OR BUTANE GAS COOKTOP, YOU MUST add a 12v ceiling exhaust fan, vented through the roof for Carbon Monoxide emissions or leaky regulator on the gas bottle itself, which must be stored on a roof rack or in a gas storage box with a vented door cut out from the side or rear of your van as Carbon Monoxide is lighter than air!!! 3% carbon monoxide/co2 cause you to suffocate.
My husband is a licensed gas fitter, has been for 40yrs, the Gas bottles, regulator can cause a leak you cannot detect without a carbon monoxide detector, they also set off alarm at safe levels for both Carbon Monoxide and carbon dioxide cO2 Worldwide. Carbon Monoxide poisoning occurs it is NOT Safe it will cause you to feel sleepy, but you will never wake up, carbon monoxide fumes come from a lit gas burner, there are regulations that Katie and many no build van conversions are unaware of, because they have not got their van professionally fitted with fixed gas appliances inside a vehicle, to be able to use it safely inside, the gas bottle needs to be stored in a gas storage box, sealed from inside, or had a gas fitter fit a gas burner cooktop, under an exhaust vent one way continuously air out, or you can add a 12v exhaust fan to draw air out from above our 4burner cooktop, our gas grill and gas oven, anytime we are using the cooktop, the 12v fan draws it outside at a faster rate, like the exhaust fan above the cooktop at home.
So even when you don't have the door or window open, (when it's raining outside,) you can safely use a gas hotplate indoors, the deadly Carbon Monoxide emissions & Carbon dioxide emissions can escape outside above the gas stove, and from the floor vents if you do a swap for a gas bottle with a faulty regulator, or it gets dropped, or just develops a leak, then it won't kill you in your sleep if you have it stored in a floor safe or a keyed small safe, for safety reasons, and your own peace of mind, adding a carbon monoxide detector/cO2 or carbon dioxide detector with a loud alarm, which will alert you before it gets to lethal level. But it won't prevent the emissions building up inside, only the floor vents and ceiling vent, and a sealed internally, vented outside your van for the gas bottle storage box will prevent the carbon monoxide and or carbon dioxide emissions Inside your van. These are safety features which can be removed, holes patched repainted if/when you decide to sell, but selling it as an RV to others for the same purpose, adds a safety feature that could save the next owners too.
These Carbon Monoxide detectors are not expensive and may just save your life. BE Safe, especially when travelling alone!!
