In case of a natural disaster or similar situation in our area, there will be several people listening for my call as I am part of the emergency amateur radio net for my church, city, county and state (RACES) as well as being a CERT member.
WHAT....... You mean I have to read the instructions!!!! Instructions is just a waste of time. Plug in and play is the only way😁 BTW, great video. Keep em coming!!
Best Video yet! Amazing how many people think they are safe just because the have that radio, in the box over there, somewhere. You have to know how to use it and its limitations just like any tool. Your advice on the Garmin is spot on. It, or something similar, is the best save my ass investment someone going into the wild can make.
Nice, lots of useful info, have to pack saw as well apparently, but.... Is there any non frowned upon process how to test repeaters ahead on emergency situation without having radio license?
Bought a couple bay-o-fangs like 7 years ago to use in the RV. I didn't know they were considered "ham radios" nor did I know anything about radios. Last summer I was playing around and came across two people talking and later figured it was a repeater channel. And it was like 85 miles away. I was blown away. So I looked on Amazon and started buying big antennas and coax. Got a mast and programming cable. That's badass these $25 walkie talkies things can do this. Then I met ham radio people. And now all that joy is gone. 🤮
"And now all that joy is gone. " Same with drone flying. You buy a drone and the first thing most people do is fly straight up as high as it would go, right into the flight path of an airplane or helicopter. Gradually you discover rules exist. Many rules. Then the joy is gone. Joy exists in the presence of ignorance.
1) Repeaters are individually owned and maintained 2) Repeaters function independantly and do not require a backhaul/other links in the chain to be online to function 3) Many (some, not all) repeaters have battery backup, and some have additional solar charging or generator backups 4) The only repeater I care about is owned & maintained by me and has a battery and solar backup, so I know there will be one available when I need it.
I am in your neck of the woods Randy and will say, so long as repeaters stay up in a SHTF (earthquake), there is some DANG good coverage! We might be a tad spoiled with the active repeaters in the areas on BOTH amateur and GMRS bands! I for one, welcome the next quake, not that I am hoping for people to be hurt and things messed up, but in a sense of nothing has REALLY been tested since 92 Landers and 94 Northridge....
Have you heard anything about during the recent disaster with HELENE or any others in the past, how did the GMRS network hold up? Was it saturated or are the channels available? Is it reliable for an emergency plan or will it be overwhelmed during an emergency in my area and if so, what would be the best plan for a disaster like this?
I bought a set off of amazons for $40. Wanted something to use when situating my RV while camping. My wife and I usually just use cell phones, but when cell service sucks, these radios are perfect. I don't intend on getting a license since we only do this a few times per year and we use MURS frequencies. Too bad for the sad hams. I also programmed them for NOAA weather. and, for shits and giggles to listen to the ISS when it flies over.
the sawing off your own arm thing ... oof ... that might be a good reason to have a ham licencse, so you can put some ham repeaters on your radio, a baofeng has a chance to hit a repeater even in more remote areas. maybe not if you're way out in BFE, then maybe get the tourniquette ready..
You can use EchoLink and I don’t know if it’s a way but some radios have an emergency orange button on it I’m not sure if it’s possible but you could probably set it up for emergency personnel to respond to that location
i have a pair of midland 1030's for camping comms. i like how they're usable in minutes out of the box. thinking about getting one of their micomobile mxt's for more range. but am still open to a Baofeng. my only hesitancy has been that it seems like you have to jailbreak it and program it? any practical objective recommendations for someone with no radio knowledge, and with the intended purpose of easy use right out of the box?
Correct Randy ... no radio will save you... That's why we need to be self reliant and have a Network of friends that can throw you some Rope .....not one thing can keep you alive. But With knowledge and some wisdom we prevail.
"That's why we need to be self reliant and have a Network of friends that can throw you some Rope" Provided you happened to mention to your rope throwing friends which canyon you were visiting and might not return from.
Hello @NotaRubicon Productions, I have a question to ask you about the Baofeng UV-5R's use. Are business such as my local Costco allowed to use these? I've seen staff carry them around the store talking to there coworkers and what not.
I have these for a SHTF situation but not for emergency contact. I have them so me and my family can contact each other should we be separated and cellular phones aren’t working. Yes range sucks but a possibility to contact my separated loved ones is better than being completely out of luck.
i was going to say something, but then, at the very end of the video, you take the chance away from me. Yep, people should just skip to 6:50 and do that instead. Great video!

One job I had one in my work truck and it was a pain to use. Had to get bars and then hold the phone still and contort your head to where the phone was. My current job, my work has one we take if going somewhere remote. I have used it a few times and it works much better than the other one
"Now I won’t have to call the sad hams that are just waiting to come to my rescue."
Thank you!
Plug in and play is the only way😁
BTW, great video. Keep em coming!!
I love my Boofwang (I like how Randy says that) B-Tech Gmrs-V2
Best Video yet! Amazing how many people think they are safe just because the have that radio, in the box over there, somewhere. You have to know how to use it and its limitations just like any tool. Your advice on the Garmin is spot on. It, or something similar, is the best save my ass investment someone going into the wild can make.
Great advise . . . looking into the Garmin
Same with drone flying. You buy a drone and the first thing most people do is fly straight up as high as it would go, right into the flight path of an airplane or helicopter. Gradually you discover rules exist. Many rules. Then the joy is gone. Joy exists in the presence of ignorance.
@@thomasmaughan4798 Sad ham.
Why do you think repeaters are going to work if cell towers and power go down ?
1) Repeaters are individually owned and maintained
2) Repeaters function independantly and do not require a backhaul/other links in the chain to be online to function
3) Many (some, not all) repeaters have battery backup, and some have additional solar charging or generator backups
4) The only repeater I care about is owned & maintained by me and has a battery and solar backup, so I know there will be one available when I need it.
First? -- Valuable info as always sir
Exquisite! your information is fantastisch , and put in a way almost as crazed as I am ... live long my friend!
I watch all your videos Randy.
Touching on it is something you're good at, I believe!
I survived the flash floods of ocotillo wells.
I remember the Northridge one! A coworker had to drive to his Mom’s and rescue her out of the collapsed building she lived at.
@@Nwladylaura369 Northridge, Landers, Big Bear ALL have stuck with me to this day...
Brilliant Community Safety message Randy..........................................with affiliate links below!😆👍
Love this guy and the impotent information he provides
I save all manuals! 😃
Too bad you don't read them.
Baofengank you for this important information !
Do they announce tornado siren tests?
the sawing off your own arm thing ... oof ... that might be a good reason to have a ham licencse, so you can put some ham repeaters on your radio, a baofeng has a chance to hit a repeater even in more remote areas. maybe not if you're way out in BFE, then maybe get the tourniquette ready..
That's why we need to be self reliant and have a
Network of friends that can throw you some
Rope .....not one thing can keep you alive. But
With knowledge and some wisdom we prevail.
"That's why we need to be self reliant and have a Network of friends that can throw you some Rope"
Provided you happened to mention to your rope throwing friends which canyon you were visiting and might not return from.
Another one of your great vids Randy!
Hello @NotaRubicon Productions, I have a question to ask you about the Baofeng UV-5R's use. Are business such as my local Costco allowed to use these? I've seen staff carry them around the store talking to there coworkers and what not.
This is one of the funniest videos I have ever seen!!!!! hahahaha!!! Good info too. Cheers man!
I want to know if can use my baofeng at the race track for listening? Specifically NASCAR. ??
I have these for a SHTF situation but not for emergency contact. I have them so me and my family can contact each other should we be separated and cellular phones aren’t working. Yes range sucks but a possibility to contact my separated loved ones is better than being completely out of luck.
Love it! Great tips... including the very last one!
Can you rig a similar walkie talkie to be used as a repeater.
Are spurious emissions squirting forth considered emergencies?
do you have something to open cars?
I hope you are able to do a test and review of the emergency satellite messaging available on the iPhone 14 soon.
I know some sad hams that's got very expensive HT's don't have a clue how to operate them !
the repeater i use for fars is on top of mt tom and im in spring like 20 miles away weve talkted people from vermont all the way to new havenct
It can also help too if you buy a Fat Boy 6-pill linear amplifier and hook it up to your Bow Fang.
lots of great information thanks.
I just got mine delivered. But now need to figure out the programming.
i was going to say something, but then, at the very end of the video, you take the chance away from me. Yep, people should just skip to 6:50 and do that instead. Great video!
😂❤so intertaining are yr videos! Thank u
Excellent video sir.
As a public safety officer at a local college in illinois, my department radio does not scan or pick up other agencies....
I need to be able to scan local fire an e m s, as well as illinois state police emergency radio network....
I also need to be able to Communicate with these other agencies in life-and-death situations.....
Any suggestions would be helpful....
Thank you in advance...
Very informative Ty. I get ur tone though. ppl just don’t do common sense anymore. Just doing research.
Such a simple concept yet, so hard to grasp for some..
I recently bought a Baofeng BF-S5plus
at a ham radio event. It's a tri band radio
70cm 1.25m and 2m. Can't seem to find an owners manual for this model. Radioddity said it's not a radio they sell and they have no info. They called it a custom model?
In emergencies, I only use smoke signals
easy just key up with no antenna
How do I use my browfang to rebuild civilization after the zombie apocalypse?
Use its secret power source to rejuvenate the power substations.
