Now days we have whiners who don't know how to make filters. But, hey, we still love our sad hams crying all day long. :)
I've been licensed since 1978. Yes, in theory someone could build a filter and add it. But it would greatly reduce the portability of the HT, and would significantly add to the cost. It would also defeat the convenience of having a dual-band HT since the filter would essentially limit the radio to one band at a time. In spite of the theory, in practice I disagree with your comment. I'm glad this video was posted, the measurements will save me from making a bad purchase. I'll stick with my IC-V82. 73

Hi, I’m new in the HAM radio community, and looking into buying my first cheap radio that has all the features and compatibility. Baofeng seems to be the best choice so far, that offers so many features, I’m debating between UV-5RM Plus 10W and the BF-F8HP. Which would you recommend, or another brand that is cheap but still offers so many features and wattage strength and programmability. Something that receives and transmits AM, FM, VHF, and UHF.
Looks like an issue with the screen backlighting, not covering the full screen area towards the bottom. I must have been lucky. The BF-5RH/UV-5RH has a Black Background with White digits, very easy to read. perhaps there is some variance between models as to which type/colour of screen one gets.
Will this be able to pick up encrypted frequency?? I listen to nypd and they switched to encrypted and there is one person who has this radio that you are reviewing and claims that it works with picking up the encrypted frequency. Im trying to do my own research before paying way too much money for one when I can just do it myself. Greatly appreciated with your help with this question
I have two of these UV-5RM units. I think they're quite nice. I couldn't care less about the stuff that you're hating on. One thing I would like to point out that I wasn't really expecting is that the long antenna they shipped, the 771 variant performs better than any of my other Nagoya antennas as far as SRW match and therefor power out. I tested it across all the ham and GMRS frequency spectrums that it covers and I was surprised at the average (good) impedance match I saw. Large areas of 2 meters and 440 bands were 1:2 or 1:3 vswr and in the best areas I was seeing 12W out. The short ducky antenna they shipped me was crap in every way. The USB-C charging is another cherry on the top. I have not had enough time to empirically test battery longevity yet. The display turning completely off is a little irritating---I like the LCD UV-5R that stays visible. I have several older UV-5R's so I'm pretty familiar with Chirp and have been a ham for about 32 years.
That’s just a horrible comment. Absolutely horrible. And horrible shouldn’t be capitalized in your comment. Some could say your grammar is horrible. I would hate for people to think that. It would make me feel horrible.

You really hate those loud second harmonics on these low powered radios don't you? Given that they are such low wattage and typically used on a small antenna, do you really feel that that second harmonic causes any problem in real life? Just curious....
Why be incomplete and sloppy with testing? Some folk do care about 220 and many of us are looking for decent 220 radios. Also why not test for spurious emissions on 220 and 440 as well? (Btw another TH-camr finally tested 440 and it seems pretty clean there.)
I have one of these radios and several other boofwangs. I just did a quick spurious emissions test on several of them using a GSP-830 spectrum analyzer and they all have the same issue. Not a good thing at all but what do you expect from radios that cost $20-$30? Beats me how these things get FCC certified. Bottom line is that these serve a purpose for SHTF, but probably not good for everyday ham use. Worth noting is that I have a Talkpod A36Plus in the shack and tested that one also - very clean in comparison to the boofwangs - and about the same price.
This review seems entirely too caustic for a $32 HT. The list of great features the 5RM offers is extensive. Everyone I know loves their 5RM and are in the process of buying more. Perhaps because we harbor no deep hatred for spurious emissions? Anyway, thanks for the video and I guess we must agree to disagree.

I am a fan of filthy Baofeng radios, big fan. 😎
So what so what walkie talkie do you recommend?
Quansheng for the win. K5 or K6. The Baofeng killer.
Are any of the UV-5 series a worthwhile purchase?
bro...the radio is fine.
Thanks Mike! 🤝The Quasheng UV-5(8) is the hot soup dujour and all the rage right now with the multiple firmware updates and custom mods.
Soup Du Jour, what's that? That's the soup of the day. Mmm, that sounds yummy, I'll have that.

They will clean it up; actually not a bad radio... have you even tried using to communicate?
Probably not. 😂
What about unlocked AR5RM radio.
Buys $30 radio... complains as if it was $400. I got a complaint.... you use the word Horrible to much.
That’s just a horrible comment. Absolutely horrible. And horrible shouldn’t be capitalized in your comment. Some could say your grammar is horrible. I would hate for people to think that. It would make me feel horrible.
I feel horrible
🤨
It’s a crap unit that’s worse than their $15 radio though, or even something like a Quansheng $30 radio.
@@Nebula-qq8sg well., I have a Quansheng radio that fully satisfies me, I can communicate with some relatives who are over 5km away. Effective and clear communication. Of course, I use an external antenna for this! 🙂
@@attilarivera I can hit a repeater 10 miles away with the rubber duck, and the custom firmware scene is sweet (nice spectrum view, digital messaging with mesh networking, am and usb reception). If you don’t want to shell out for a more premium ham radio I think it’s the best bang for your buck in the price range
Thank you so much for warning us because now I have bought 12 more ha!
Dang... This is right after I bought the UV-5RM... but you mentioned the UV-5R lines are good?
This is the only Baofeng anyone needs. And it's less than $20. amzn.to/4aCaBZo
Thank you for your honest opinion, greetings from bogota colombia / Gracias por tu opinion tan honesta, saludos desde bogota colombia
Is this a good radio to buy for a beginner? $70 for 2x plus all the bells and whistles
Love the 2 baofeng uv5r I bought recently both do gmrs perfect and don't transmit in frequency mode so with the gmrs license I bought its legal 22 channels and 8 repeaters got them for 20$ each unlocked from the jump
Thanks for this review. I have several UV-5R variants that all work well.
What's the difference between this and the AR-5RM?
The AR-5RM is unlocked. I bought 2 of them. I can transmit on GMRS.
It is going to be a LONG time before any company out therein the world HT market will knock the UV5R from the top spot. lets face it, you can add all the sales worldwide of HT radios and the UV5R still out sells everything else.
I thoght the same with the little green button, to scan for open frequencies (new at this, gimme a break). Found that swirching to Frequency Mode (not Channel Mode), you can yhen search for used open frequencies by holding down #. Now, how to save them, heh.
Maybe the scan function is for finding listening devices
For $26 this little dude is great! Have a yaesu vx-5r but but this boefeng can still be quite useful and a great learning tool.
Can these be unlocked to use on GMRS?
they ship unlocked for gmrs. there is a vid on my channel using this radio on gmrs
You really hate those loud second harmonics on these low powered radios don't you? Given that they are such low wattage and typically used on a small antenna, do you really feel that that second harmonic causes any problem in real life? Just curious....
I have one and am very happy with it.
Have you tested the uv-5RH
Wow, this Bf UV-5R Max radio is AMAZING. It works as it should🤩👍.
Boof wangs😂😂😂😂😂😅😂😂😂😂😂
This review seems entirely too caustic for a $32 HT. The list of great features the 5RM offers is extensive. Everyone I know loves their 5RM and are in the process of buying more. Perhaps because we harbor no deep hatred for spurious emissions? Anyway, thanks for the video and I guess we must agree to disagree.
Is it locked for GMRS?
No. Program in chirp
The AR-5RM is unlocked for GMRS.
So you buy something for a bargain price and you expect the creme de la creme!?
What are you thinking!? (in my eyes you're just being stingy . . . ) Man be honest!?
I just got a UV21R $29 and it is great!!
Red on blue background... which came first, Xiegu or Baofeng?
Thank you. Now, I can sleep peacefully. I knew, something was off in its design
Men I’m a new ham and I think this radio is extremely good for the price I spend 27 in amazon and it preforms better that my wouxun that cost me 180 that is sad
Bought it as a scanner for a friend. Works awesome
I like the 5rm. I do not like the way the flap over the connector swings. The standard uv5r was perfect. It opened and was covered by the plug. Clean no snag sttatchment. The battery keeps pooping out with the slightest impact. Not a fan of the antenna. I have a 2 pack and one was compleatly broken from the start. The emissions on mine are not bad. Abree ar771 seems to be great on them.
I'm a new HAM with a uv5r and just added a magmount antenna to the car which made a huge difference. The microphone speaker is terrible. Any suggestions for an alternative? I'm told my receive audio is very low.
Retevis makes a decent one. Look for the ones that have thick cord support. It's similar to the Bridgecom hand mics.
I have one. It's great! I paired it up with a better antenna, and it's fantastic.
The only downside so far is that I haven't been able to get odmaster to work with it, so I've been stuck with CHIRP.
Good review buddy, almost bought one lol! 😮💨 Thank you.
subbed to your channel by the way.
Thanks so much!
I just bought 2 UV 5G+ for GMRS and am very happy with the radios…
Thanks for the video Mike!
It does not mention repeater cloning but does clearly state and show cloning of RADIO by WIRELESS FEATURE😂
