If you were confused by Philip II of Austria it was because his father, Emperor Charles V was both the King of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor (as well as the Archduke of Austria). He divided the Habsburg holdings between his son Philip (who got Spain and the Netherlands) and his brother Ferdinand (who got Austria and the HRE). Considering that the Austrian holdings were what was considered as the primary Habsburg titles, it would make sense that he would be Philip of Austria for the duration that his father, Charles V, reigned as the Holy Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria.

Yes Philip of Austria was Philip II, King of Spain, King of Portugal, King of Naples and Sicily, and jure uxoris King of England and Ireland. He was also Duke of Milan, and from 1555, lord of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands.

I wish the original creator of this video made note of the Philippine Revolution bc it is so important to our history and many of our national heroes were from that period (Rizal, Bonifacio, Aguinaldo, etc.). The narrator simply mentioned America taking the Philippines from Spain when in fact we fought for our independence from Spain only to have the U.S. wage war on us several months later.

King Philip II is not king Philip of Austria. King Philip II was born in Valladolid, Castile (now Spain). He is the son of Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Spanish kingdoms Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, he inherited a lots of kingdom, he was the King of Spain (1556-1598), King of Portugal (1580-1598, as Philip I, King of Naples and Sicily (both from 1554), and jure uxoris King of England and Ireland (during his marriage to Queen Mary I from 1554 to 1558). He was also Duke of Milan from 1540. From 1555 he was Lord of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands.
Philip of Austria (Philip the handsome) is his grandfather from the Austrian house of Hapsburg and his grandmother Joanna the Mad of the Spanish House of Trastámara daughter of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. (Castile and Aragon are now called Spain). Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon funded the voyage of Columbus to the west indies (now called the American continent) discovering the north and south America for the Spanish empire.

Mike and Nelly now you could relate because the term filipino & Philippines came from Europe from a King King Philipp of Austria & of Spain. So you are a filipino too .. during the Spanish Empire European born in the Philippine islands were called filipino the term was reserved only for white European not for natives indios only during the Spanish-American War the last Governor-General Valeriano Weyler he was the one who used the term filipino which included the natives indios &Chinese as Filipinos & the term stick up to this day to the inhabitants of this country whether what race & country one came from. Thank you very much for Loving the Philippines 🇵🇭

Phillip II was the son of King Charles V of Holy Roman Empire and Queen Isabella of Portugal. He became the King of Kingdom of Spain with all acquired territories of it including the Philippines. I think this was the time when Iberian empire formed. And this was also the time when they had full war against ottoman empire in europe having problem with moors in Morocco and southern spain. It’s so coincidental, they met war with ottoman empire in the far east asia. Ottomans are everywhere according to the first Spanish Governor General to the Philippines, that’s why they took full attack in those islands with overwhelming diverse armies. They reached Sabah Borneo via mindanao and build fortresses to hold on the territories. They included east of sabah during that time as territory specially in lahad datu and semporna but it was ceded by british east indies on 1762 during the 3 years war between British - Spaniards in manila. They occupied manila and cavite, including sabah but only sabah was not taken back to Spanish colony.

There are some inaccuracies in the video you’ve reacted to. 1. There was a land bridge called the Sundaland connecting Thailand, today’s Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia to the Philippine’s Southern Part, so the first people in the Philippines travelled by land. This is evidenced by the animals present in Pre-Historic Philippines, like elephants, rhinos, etc. When sea waters rose, that was the only time Filipinos travelled by water. 2. The first empire to have relations with people from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao was Sri Vijaya in Sarawak Island in Indonesia, the Capital back then is the present day Singapore. There were already Filipinos from Luzon trading with Indonesian, Indians, Vietnamese, and Chinese in old day Singapore before the Muslims came and before the Majapahit empire defeated Sri Vijaya empire. There were already Filipinos fighting for and under different Kingdoms like Thailand, Brunei, etc. 3. Philippine leaders were already trading with Portuguese, speaking in Southeast Asia’s Malay language, before the Spanish explorers came.

    • @bons244
      @bons244 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree. The earlier trade with Portuguese was via Melaka, since the route from the other side across the pacific was not yet discovered at that time. The relationship between post-Sri Vijaya kingdoms were mostly peaceful too, this is why the Malay translator that Magellan brought over and around to the other side was able to communicate with indigenous Filipinos, meaning they still have close connection at that time and can communicate well with each other.

aqua man I am just a Philippine Pre-History buff who studied the History of the Sea Spice Trade involving Europe, Middle East, India and Southeast Asia. There are a lot of leading experts in that field. I believe that Philippine History should connect with the History of its Neighbors, and a lot of what happened in the pre-history Philippines was by product of the Sea Spice Trade involving Southeast Asia.

@@florenzryansotelo8552 I agree. I'm not an expert but there are two key chapters in Philippine History being omitted in textbooks. One is pre-colonial and the other was the actual Spanish Era that involves our role in the church's campaign to convert the Japanese to catholicism, the failed expeditions of Dasmariñas to IndoChina(Vietnam), the galleon trades and migration of some Filipinos/Mexicans, the British invasion during the 7 years war, the rise of liberalism in Madrid in the late 1800s which inspired the Filipino propagandists, etc.

Yes, there was a Philip of Austria as related to Spain who was a Hapsburg. He was married to Juana, Queen Isabella’s daughter. He was also called “Philip the handsome” & Juana referred at times in history books as “Juana la loca”. Philip & Juana’s son was King Charles I of Spain & at the same time also called Charles v of the holy Roman Empire. Charles’ son was King Philip II of Spain & that’s who the Philippines is named after.

During 1417, the East King of Sulu, Paduka Pahala, sailed with his family and 300 other people of noble descent. He was to pay tribute to the Yongle Chinese emperor, Zhu Di, who was of the Ming Dynasty. While he was welcomed by the emperor upon his arrival in China, he nevertheless contracted a mysterious disease on his way home and died at Dezhou, a town in Shandong province in China. The emperor immediately commissioned artisans and sculptors to build a tomb for the deceased monarch, which still stands today.

The ancient history prove that the sea which is now called South China Sea has been navigated by the early seafarers coming from the western and southern part of the sea. It shouldn't be claim unilaterally by China as its territory. Also China cannot support their claim of the sea by stating that it's their traditional fishing grounds. The ASEAN's could have been the first traditional fishermen of this sea. Just because it was named SCS it doesn't mean it belongs to China.

Yes, Philip II of Spain to whom the Philippines was named after, was the king of Spain, married Anna of Austria and according to research King Philip of Spain was a very powerful emperor, his lands spreading throughout much of Europe and his inheritance includes Austria. His father was the Roman Emperor and Archduke of Austria. King Philip of Spain was also the King of England as well for a short period of time. As per Wikipedia, Charles V, the "father divided his hereditary and imperial domains between the Spanish Habsburgs headed by his son Philip II of Spain and the Austrian Habsburgs headed by his brother Ferdinand, who was Archduke of Austria in Charles's name".

Why would austronesians first arrive in the Philippines via indonesia? Austronesians arrived in the Philippines via Taiwan and China. Philippines languages are amongst the most conservative Austronesian languages, Malay and Indonesian languages aren't. I think this video still follows the debunked Beyer theory from over 150 years ago

I thinks it's because We have the same cultures and the same language with Malay and Indonesians before the Spaniards colonized the Philippines

This is probably confusing... They say the ruler of tondo... Is a very intelligent person.. He knows how to use gun powder... So he had a handgun similar to pirates.. He also have canons... He built a wall city guarded it with canons.... So when Spanish came 2nd time after they controlled Cebu they went to the place we known now as Manila to capture his city.. Because that city is bustling in trade and perfect for defense... They tried to take it down and succeed but the ruler of tondo burn it all down so they won't get any thing... But the Spanish rebuilt it... They called it now intramuros..

King Philipp II was the king of Spain when the archipelago was under control of Spanish rule. So that the country is named Philippines in honor of the Spanish king. By March 2021, the Philippines will be celebrating its 500 years of Christianity and colonization which shall kick off in Cebu City, the first established crown colony city of Spain. America also colonized our country and transformed the system from Hispanic to be more Americanized including the use of the English language.

11:26 King Philip II is not king Philip of Austria.

The Philippines' history is now being renovated as it was dependent on the Spaniards and Americans before. But Philippine historians are now looking at archeological finds and also research in some of the neighboring countries in Asia , Africa, US and Europe.

This is the first time I heared the name "Phillip of Austria" and was somehow how absorbed in Spain to behold the title "King Phillip II" as it said in the video. I too was surorised and found myself curious. Anyways thank you for this reaction, I still love the outro music, makes my body move and my head move sideways everytime! 😁

The Philippines was named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos, during his expedition in 1542, named the islands of Leyte and Samar Felipinas after the then-Prince of Asturias.
While Philip was also a German archduke of the House of Habsburg, he was seen as a foreigner in the Holy Roman Empire.
    -both excerpts are from Wikipedia.
I think the narrator of the video mispronounced Asturias as Austria. Albeit, it is interesting to learn that Philip was a Habsburg as well.
We learn new things every day, cool!

Philippines my country, has a loaded history from food, religion and culture.,that even us filipinos didnt know it.
As we dig deeper and deeper, there were things that surrounds us with hebrew names, even mountains. The first filipino writings which called alibata, its very similar to the middle eastern way of writing.
Me myself was very confused, off course what we know is we colonized by spaniards, american, japanese,.
But before that happened, anno domini and before christ, who are those people o r nationality who came to philippines for trading and speading theyre religions and cultures.. ??
Well thanks for this video its a big help for me.
