I've worked on 2 systems where the memory speeds/stability degraded over time and both times cleaning the dimm slots and ddr4 contacts with alcohol and a toothbrush (gently) would allow me to push the memory speeds higher. These PCs were used by or around people that smoke, though I suspect this could still happen just given a long enough period of time. I only had a 3700x for about half a year from late 2022 to like April 2023 cause I found a local seller selling a Ryzen 5700x unboxed for $100 USD, asked him why so cheap and he said cause he was gifted the 5700x & 5800x for his birthday so was getting rid of 5700x for cheap cause he’s not loosing money, so I bought it and sold the 3700x for $80 USD lol, I had just bought an RTX 4070 from an RTX 2080 as well so I wanted a better CPU

Got my 3700x with a asus rog b550-a gaming and phanteks case for 450$aud 2nd hand. For xmp issue i had to do a bios update. I have it paired with a 6800xt red devil which i scored for $300. System runs smooth i get 100fps in most games I play
Just did that Baldurs Gate mission yesterday 😂 interesting looking at these numbers though, I have an i7 10700 aio cooled which is slightly stronger than the 3700x but I’ve got it paired up with a 4070. Seems to be sort of the best you can do GPU wise before CPU bottleneck would kick in. The 3070 testing was great to show realistically the card suitable to use with the 3700x for best performance and minimal bottleneck
@@skarrerx8493 Exactly, with Ryzens the first one that had proper gaming performance (although still not on the level of the best Intels at the time) was 5800x. Zen 2 was still notably inferior.
@@skarrerx8493 It had synthetic IPC on the level of Skylake/Kaby Lake (6th/7th gen), but still lagged behind in gaming at the same core count (3700x was slightly faster than 7700k in a couple games due to having twice the cores and threads).
I remember buying one of these and matching it with my 2080s. I legit got worse performance in modern warfare than my old i7 3770k @5ghz. As long as I wasn’t streaming the i7 held up. Ended up selling my 3700x and getting the 12700k when it came out crazy because the 12700k was so much better and ran way cooler too. Since I upgraded to the 13900k and ocd to 6ghz and still runs cooler than the 3700x lmfao crazy part is I’m still using the same cooling setup
Would love to try and see how quickly would a R7 3700X system sell in my local marketplace to see if people snag onto the "Ryzen 7" tag. However, brand new R5 5600 (non-X/G) prices sold by local online retailers from where I'm from are REAAALLY cutting close in terms of prices that Aliexpress offers (including shipping) and that makes selling Zen 2 CPUs above a R5 3600 a harder sell for shop-savvy buyers looking for "mid/endgame" PCs that are still on the AM4 platform.
Do keep in mind running st higher resolutions like 4k remove the cpu bottleneck up to around a 3080ti in my own experience with it. If u run at 1080/1440 yes u bottleneck but above u have more gpu choice so always keep in mind ^^
Yes it is, if money is tight then the 3700X is the only semi-official guarantee that you have secured yourself PlayStation 5 level of performance on the cpu side at the very least , it is a very valuable piece of hardware.
I remember having to bump up SOC Voltage on a brand new 3700X slightly (not by much) to reach DDR XMP (was DOCP on my board) 3600 speeds with full stability. It could be IMC degradation, on your chip, or it may have always been this way.
Just got a 3700x, cooler and strix b450 for £100 and the seller forgot to take his 120gb nvme out of slot 2 also, runs a lot better than my old 3350g, it's pushing my 500w psu with 6650xt tho for sure 😂
No no. Crucial Ballistix 3600 MHz work on ASRock motherboard with this CPU perfectly fine even at 3600 MHz after several years. And I have good experience with ADATA XPG SPECTRIX on ASRock motherboards as well, but I haven't tried 3600 MHz.
I wonder when it comes to the 5700X, would that be better value compared to a 5600/5600X? A used 5600 would be something like $120-140 CAD with a 5600X being like $10-20 more at like $150-160 CAD while a 5700X would be a little more still at I'd say $170-200 CAD. Currently have a 3500X I got used off Aliexpress for $158 CAD back in 2020, adjusted for inflation that would be like $183 CAD in 2023 and for that price a 5700X may be possible with a 5600X for sure being in budget. However a GPU upgrade would come first with me having a GTX 1070 I paid $275 CAD shipped back in 2020, adjusted for inflation that would be like $318, say round up to $320 CAD and a 3060 TI would be in budget at that price with me seeing some available for like $290-320 CAD however a 3070 for like $350-370 CAD could be a option also however a 2080 TI could be had in the price range of both cards at say $315-350+ CAD that while being a generation older therefore more power required would perform at about a 3070 but with 3GB more VRAM at 11GB vs the 8GB of the 3070. On the AMD Side of GPUs would be a 6700 XT/6750 XT with 12GB VRAM (4GB more than a 3070, 1GB more than a 2080 TI) that would cost about what a 3070 would cost if not more ($350-400 CAD). Would be for Gaming on a 24" 1080p 144Hz IPS monitor (MSI Optix G241 that I got from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $180+tax (just about $204) CAD on New Years Day 2021.
I wouldn't go for any Ryzen chips except the new ones or 5600 or up. You can get great deals on 9th,10th, 11th, and 12th gen Intel which are way better than 3000 Ryzen.
Hello tyc bro. I upgraded my i5 9400f to a used ryzen 3700x. Paid $75 for cpu only and $110 for a b550 motherboard. Ran my ram just fine at 3600mhz New motherboard pricing is dumb 😾. Wanted to ask, is it normal for this cpu to run at 25watts at idle and to never go below it's base clock even at idle? My i5 used to idle at 6 watts.
I'm still on 3700x and I can't imagine upgrading it since it's been running so well for most of my application, which is non-gaming. It's the best CPU I've ever owned.
I went from a 2700X to a 5900X, gaming I noticed no difference, multi-tasking, the 5900X is a beast, so if you don't rip movies, download movies, burn movies to bluray while playing a game, you're good for a long time.
My 3700X was well binned & purchased early 2021 & has always been well cooled I put it in a 2nd build because it's to good for the price I would have got for it. The 5800X3D I replaced it with gives me a 22% gain.
Been debating the same move to replace mine with an 5800X3D, though I don't know if I will gain that much considering I have an thin ITX build and most certainly will need to throw it into Eco mode to keep it cool.
@@tonicipriani You will need a good air cooler & undervolt it in the BIOS settings, but saying that I only upgraded to get the last out of the AM4 socket. The 3700X is a gem that will serve you for years if you don't feel the need to upgrade.
Same here. Replaced it with a 5800x3D. All Components are here. Starting the Build this Week. Had the 3700x, RAM, PSU and RTX2070 Super from my 2020 Build over and why throw it away?
I've been runnin' my 3700x pc since 2020 and whew!!!! it's been awesome. Still fast enough to do production work and play games at a decent level. I've paired it with a 6700 xt.
Rocking a 3700X + RTX 2060S for 1080p since 2019. To this day it's still awesome for all online high FPS games and most AAA games. For people on the budget under $600USD, if you can find this combo, or similar performing parts (Ryzen 5600, RX 6600/XT, RTX 3060) used, it's probably all you need.
The Ryzen 3700X is still a great CPU, and definitely capable of holding it's own in the current gaming environment. Heck, the 5700X can be currently had for about $190 USD new, which honestly may be the new sweet spot for price/performance...
Zen 3 has been terrific. 5600X on launch day, got the 5700X a year ago and was even more impressed. It runs so cool you'd think it has an AIO cooler installed.
Had a 3700X running in my daughter's rig for 2 years now, after upgrading from a R5 3600. With a RTX 2060, it plays everything she cares about at 1080p quite well.
@@HenrySomeone I think we're talking more budget/value oriented builds here... it's easy to turn a $1000 build into a $1500 build by just levelling up the odd component here or there - which some people just don't have.
Never had a problem with running 3600Mhz on 3700X on 2 different systems. Both have an X570 mobo though. Running 2x16Gb Gskill Ripjaws on one and 2x16Gb Corsair vengence on the other. I am looking to get me a 5700X though. Juicy upgrade😁
I also had a 3700x on a x570 tuf paired with 3600mhz c16 ballistix running smoothly from the first start, so is not the the cpu that has problem to run the 3600mhz memory.
R7 3700X user here, pairing it with an RTX 4070 Ti. No sign of aging yet, still runs everything on 1440p no problem including Phantom Liberty with path tracing on + DLSS Quality.
When Zen 2 dropped I remember there being a lot of talk about how the memory speeds and tuning were a huge factor with those chips, but just months later almost every forum was suggesting 3200 mhz @ cl16, because tighter latency on 3600+mhz was quite expensive at the time. It looks like 3200 was just the right recommend either way lol.
@@explorepixels1792 iirc with Zen 2, the difference between the two was pretty negligible. There was a lot of data on this in one of Anthony's videos on LTT, and of course GN did a bunch of testing. They found some sweet spots around 4000mhz and like 3600 cl16, but at the end of the day, you'll be looking at a few percent difference at most. I would go with what fits best in the budget. 3200mhz is very well priced these days.
@@explorepixels1792Honestly, for the money it can go either way. Both have come WAY down in price, easily had for less than $40 for 16gb, and the performance difference is honestly negligible.
I just picked up a 5600x with one broken pin for $40 on eBay. The pin dealt with memory, mainly only one channel worked. I replaced the the pin and have dual channel running again.. I paired it with 32gb 3200 ram and a 12gb 3060. This is still a pretty powerful combo for 1440p and I already have a buyer for the system
@@LPgmxDan I have a hot air/soldering station. I have been doing board level repairs for years. I recently had to repair traces coming from a CPU socket to the ram slots because they had been broken and the first 2 ram slots didn't work. It's all about patience and practice. And steady hands lol
@@LPgmxDan the pins in an AMD CPU have a small base in them. Kind of like a tee for tee-ball. You have to desolder the old base and solder a new pin in it's place. For the trace repair I used .01mm wire and soldered it to each side of the trace to repair the break. I have done actual pin repair in an Intel socket but it was a pain and it was just to prove to myself that I could do it.
I still have a 3700x but have a 5800x3d on the way. That being said I got the 3700x back in very early 2020 when it was still top tier. Amazing CPU even to this day holds its own perfectly well. I upgraded my 2060 Super to a 6800XT and its kinda bottlenecking the card a bit but still really good. 4 yrs almost and no issues whatsoever. Love this chip gonna miss it so much when the 5800x3d comes in in a couple of days.
I bought my 3700x new a few years ago it still handles everything quite capably I don't see me upgrading for at least another year and I'll still say with the AM4 platform I'm running this with 64 gigs of ddr4 3200 for the graphics card I'm running a Radion Sapphire RX 6600 and I'm quite happy
Picked on up for 60€ today, paired with a RX 5700XT and very impressed with the performance. Corsair 3600Mhz ram also worked fine out of the box, on a X470 Asus board.
I got a 5600 for a little below 100€ some time ago, and I swapped it for my friend's 3700X (which was actually my old CPU lol), and he was getting slightly better fps in most games, if not the same. So I guess this video works for that one as well. He is getting a 7800XT as well, so pretty much the same as here.
Running a 3800x in my system with a 3600 kit, never had an issue i have pushed it to 3800 also but did not like the high voltage. This all said my brother has a 3700x and a 3200kit and the performance is basically the same as my 3800x system its a few fps at most difference. I will probably do the 5800x3d upgrade in a year or so when they are super cheap. The 3800x is still very solid.
I think you should better use 1% lows instead of 0.1% lows since they are too sensible to catch a random stutter that might not even be game related .... see in Cyberpunk the 3700X matching the 7950X3D in 0.1% lows at 1080p but way behind at 1440p, or the 29fps in Apex at 1080p but 185 at 1440p.... also in baldurs gate getting 3 or 13fps in 0.1%s is irrelevant since both mean that the picture basically freezes for a moment.
The driver overhead is a complex topic. But in short answer: AMD has a smaller overhead on DX12 while Nvidia has a smaller overhead in DX11 (I am not sure if RTX 4000 changed a thing). OFC there are some outliers.

You would see a measured difference, but you may not see a real time difference. I've a Xeon1650V2, 2700X and 5900X. The 2 Ryzens have a real noticeable difference over the Xeon gaming, but not much difference between the 2 Ryzens gaming only...
I recommend using Crucial's memory with up until Zen+/2000 series, or at least Samsung B-dies, but in most of memory 3200 should work no problem for Zen2. Crucial memory or Corsair Vengence is what I would recommend around 3600. they work good with older Ryzen, and I had some trouble with patriot's memory too. not sure which chip it was using but I had issues, switched to Corsair 2666 and OC'd just set it to 3600 and it just worked.
I always delight in knowing that I snagged a Ryzen 9 5950X for 160.00 with shipping Via an Ebay seller who listed it as defective (Boot Loop). I got the chip and installed it, it boot looped when I powered it on. I went into bios, adjusted two settings and the system booted to Windows. Chip works perfectly to this day.
Did you simply try to reinstall the DIMMs in the other bank of memory on the MB? This was the issue for me. Try bank B as per specs it has higher speeds supported.
funny, about two weeks ago i tell a friend that the 3700x is 100 dollar on ali...not a bad cpu for used/mixed setup for cheap gaming. will take one of those too

The 5700xt + R5 3600x are so cheap and good these days, there's not even a decision to make between any console or a gaming PC. Good times, I feel like it's the best time for budget gaming PC probably ever.
you be surprised, i was checking some of the other channels and if you look at the comments there always a small diehard group of console promoters, you cannot reason with them, they go on about Discs CDs DVDs Performance and on and on, its a waste of time arguing with them, they are hopeless. They rather pay 500 for a console and you have no games with it, u cant add a bunch of free games, they are broke and they are OK with it. Make it make sense? LOL

good to hear i'm not too far of, with my Ryzen 5 3600x and my 3070 ;p
Got my 3700x with a asus rog b550-a gaming and phanteks case for 450$aud 2nd hand. For xmp issue i had to do a bios update. I have it paired with a 6800xt red devil which i scored for $300. System runs smooth i get 100fps in most games I play
I always thought you had to screw the M.2 drives down? 🤔
lol not for a test bench, but make sure you don't bump the drive out of place :p
He is showing us how he really feels about AMD
Just did that Baldurs Gate mission yesterday 😂 interesting looking at these numbers though, I have an i7 10700 aio cooled which is slightly stronger than the 3700x but I’ve got it paired up with a 4070. Seems to be sort of the best you can do GPU wise before CPU bottleneck would kick in. The 3070 testing was great to show realistically the card suitable to use with the 3700x for best performance and minimal bottleneck
In gaming the 10700 isn't just slightly stronger, actually in certain games the difference is quite massive.
@@HenrySomeone Very slept on for it’s time. Amazing compared to Zen 2
@@skarrerx8493 Exactly, with Ryzens the first one that had proper gaming performance (although still not on the level of the best Intels at the time) was 5800x. Zen 2 was still notably inferior.
@@HenrySomeone True that, it was 5800x Vs 10700k wasn’t it? Idek if Zen 2 would even have i7 7700k levels of IPC
Sitting here with a $100 3700X and 3200 mhz ddr4. Bought it one year ago with no cooler. Still dont have a rtx3070 though.
Do keep in mind running st higher resolutions like 4k remove the cpu bottleneck up to around a 3080ti in my own experience with it. If u run at 1080/1440 yes u bottleneck but above u have more gpu choice so always keep in mind ^^
Last spring I upgraded my 2700x to a 5700x and kept my Wraith Prism to use with it. Works just fine.
Yes it is, if money is tight then the 3700X is the only semi-official guarantee that you have secured yourself PlayStation 5 level of performance on the cpu side at the very least , it is a very valuable piece of hardware.
For
I remember having to bump up SOC Voltage on a brand new 3700X slightly (not by much) to reach DDR XMP (was DOCP on my board) 3600 speeds with full stability. It could be IMC degradation, on your chip, or it may have always been this way.
It cheap ram, my 5800x can't run my ram at 3600 C18 but it works at 3200 C16.
That's SUPER odd... my old 3600 used to run my Corsair LPX at 3600 speed...
Is there a chance you could do a benchmark using the 3700x on the new MS Flight Simulator it's a pretty needy game
Just got a 3700x, cooler and strix b450 for £100 and the seller forgot to take his 120gb nvme out of slot 2 also, runs a lot better than my old 3350g, it's pushing my 500w psu with 6650xt tho for sure 😂
CSGO is CPU intensive, very basic graphics - so makes sense that the FPS drops so low with the 3700X
Looks like good value when combined with a entry mid ranged GPU and some OG sweet spot 3200 ram.
Its bc the cpu is also only rated to run a certain mhz of ram
Great PP value on this deal.
So did you check all the output ports on the GPU to see if they were in manufacturers spec? what about multi view with all ports being used together.?
Im runningy ryzen 5 3600 with rtx 3080
What should be my next upgrade?
I know it still works but seeing that NVME drive just sticking up in that air like that bothered me a bit.
I'm getting Triggered! 😊
Is there any reason to upgrade if it’s still working great?
$100 is what I sold mine for last year
i dont know ? i had 2 r7 pc's both on asrock b450 and with a rx6600xt had 3600 mhz ram xmp and with the rx 6750xt i overclocked the xmp ?
IMO 5800X3D best option currently but I may be wrong
The 5800X3D is a violent thug undervolt it, the loss is hard to spot.
Ran my ram just fine at 3600mhz
New motherboard pricing is dumb 😾.
Wanted to ask, is it normal for this cpu to run at 25watts at idle and to never go below it's base clock even at idle? My i5 used to idle at 6 watts.
yes its weird, i heard the samething, my i7 12700 desktop idles around 65 watts using a watt meter, 25 watts sounds very normal to me =)
I'm still on 3700x and I can't imagine upgrading it since it's been running so well for most of my application, which is non-gaming. It's the best CPU I've ever owned.
Ive got the 5700x and ive got to say, its not that much faster lol
@@adk4986 good to know. i have a 3700x and 1070ti and was thinking gpu needs upgraded first.
I went from a 2700X to a 5900X, gaming I noticed no difference, multi-tasking, the 5900X is a beast, so if you don't rip movies, download movies, burn movies to bluray while playing a game, you're good for a long time.
3700x rocks.
The 5700x not, but the 5700x3d or 5800x3d is much faster. @@adk4986
Even the 7600x is not that much faster than a 3600, 3700x,5600x, 5700x
Not for cs2 tho i only get 200 fps and stuttering all over place
Lmao I literally ran that same combo when I built my pc. Now I got and RX6800 an a 5800X3D. 👌
We have same gear until now 😂
Word I got a 3700x and a Rx 7600@@slayer1561
The 5700x would be the absolute minimum I would ever go for on the amd side of things.
@@HenrySomeone I think we're talking more budget/value oriented builds here... it's easy to turn a $1000 build into a $1500 build by just levelling up the odd component here or there - which some people just don't have.
i own gen 3 and gen4 AM4 amd AM5 Ryzen CPUs and i have an 5600 and an 3700X, the 3700X has a lower power consuption and is easier to cool.
Under $100? It's the new Xeon!
Haha exactly
and what's the new Pentium? 😅
Same set up! Just got the 4070 Ti and have had the 3700x since 2020
When Zen 2 dropped I remember there being a lot of talk about how the memory speeds and tuning were a huge factor with those chips, but just months later almost every forum was suggesting 3200 mhz @ cl16, because tighter latency on 3600+mhz was quite expensive at the time. It looks like 3200 was just the right recommend either way lol.
I am recently planning to upgrade ram and my PC has r7 3700x. Should I go with 3200MHz cl16 or 3600mhz cl18?
How did you do it?
@@LPgmxDan I have a hot air/soldering station. I have been doing board level repairs for years. I recently had to repair traces coming from a CPU socket to the ram slots because they had been broken and the first 2 ram slots didn't work. It's all about patience and practice. And steady hands lol
@@larryrodriguez1977 how did you do the pin repair tho how did you connect them
@@LPgmxDan the pins in an AMD CPU have a small base in them. Kind of like a tee for tee-ball. You have to desolder the old base and solder a new pin in it's place. I believe jays2cents has a video as does ltt. Northridge fix has a few videos showing the process also. For the trace repair I used .01mm wire and soldered it to each side of the trace to repair the break. I have done actual pin repair in an Intel socket but it was a pain and it was just to prove to myself that I could do it.
@@larryrodriguez1977 thanks for the replies I also find those repairs very interesting I still lack the equipment and knowledge about this topic tho

I upgraded my 2060 Super to a 6800XT and its kinda bottlenecking the card a bit but still really good. 4 yrs almost and no issues whatsoever. Love this chip gonna miss it so much when the 5800x3d comes in in a couple of days.

i have that 7 3700x ryzen its good its in my spare computer yes it is fussy with the ram mine was to

Bought used 5600x for 90€ few months ago. Upgraded from 2600. 100$ for 3700x is wayyy too much.
I dont get whats the difference between the 3700 and 3800! I have mine stable at 4300 undervolt
Isn't the 5600 only ~$105USD on AliExpress?
WELL ..... *At least it shows, that the Radeon RX-7800XT is so MUCH better, than an RTX 3070 !!!*
Bought one used for 150 AUD nearly two years ago on eBay.. it suffices for emails m8. Paired it with rtx 3070. Great at 1440p.. oh and emails
If it's working, below 100 usd is a good value. Getting 8 core 16 threads with strong enough processing power even in 2023.
Honestly for the same price you can find a 5600/5600x. Which has way better gaming performance
The driver overhead is a complex topic. But in short answer: AMD has a smaller overhead on DX12 while Nvidia has a smaller overhead in DX11 (I am not sure if RTX 4000 changed a thing). OFC there are some outliers.
People still want 150 cad for 3600x around here. Southern ontario is bad for used parts

Makes me wonder how that 3700X would stack up alongside the older 2700X, or indeed the original Ryzen.
You would see a measured difference, but you may not see a real time difference. I've a Xeon1650V2, 2700X and 5900X. The 2 Ryzens have a real noticeable difference over the Xeon gaming, but not much difference between the 2 Ryzens gaming only...
@@EricVonZipper Indeed, I saw something similar between a 2650 v2, 2600 and 3600.

I need to get back into building pc's. when you haven't done it for awhile you lose track of all this type of stuff.
I would avoid Corsair as it mostly cheap ram.
It bottlenecks a 3080 at 1440p so that's why i replaced it.
Did you simply try to reinstall the DIMMs in the other bank of memory on the MB? This was the issue for me. Try bank B as per specs it has higher speeds supported.
Aliexpress is making a big push this year.
funny, about two weeks ago i tell a friend that the 3700x is 100 dollar on ali...not a bad cpu for used/mixed setup for cheap gaming. will take one of those too
the wraith cooler is 40 used, so i would take that deal all day long
I put my first PC together just after covid with a used $100 3700X. Still going strong, paired well with a 6650XT. Thinking of a 5700X3d if it drops a bit though.
LOL
Heck, I got a r7 2700, a Quadro k5000, a 512GB nvme SSD and a Asus B550 board for $100, I can't complain there
that is the one that as today I' still using and most of the games that I play it does handle them really well
