just to be clear.. i do actually like this weapon lol. i use it as my main primary. I just cannot stand the 2 key elements they got wrong / changed from Helldivers 1. my dream was to fire a sickle in hd2... that dream was basically shattered when i fired this thing for the first time. its a great weapon... but it aint a sickle
They were probably trying to make it sound realistic, although a real weapons grade laser gun that would be capable of doing at least the same amount of damage as a nine millimeter round with only a fraction of a second of contact, probably wouldn't make any sound itself, not counting the violent messy explosion from body water turning into steam. Though particle beam weapons probably would make loud cracking sounds, due to having some mass, and traveling almost the speed of light. This is all still theoretical as far as I know, but I do like the HD1 sickle better, just because I like my laser weapons to be hitscan.
@@marsfreelander5969 yeh.. although this change brings it more in line with the old sickle. However.. they also need to increase the speed of the cooldown/heat up if they wana make it more similar. so yeh... overall probably a bad change since it needs to be in tandem with the heat change
The tragedy struck between Helldivers 1 and 2. The planet responsible for manufacturing energy cells was attacked and effectively overtaken by bots. Helldivers looked far and wide for alternative and in the end the only one they found was the one used in Helldivers 2. Sadly it has much lesser output and that is why laser looks and sounds so miniscule. The time it took to find the solution is the reason why we got it only recently.
hehehe that really is the only explanation that makes any sense. I cannot believe this abomination was the intention from day 1 hopefully one day we'll be given the chance to retake that planet & manufacturing facility in order to right this wrong
This is why I was disappointed when it came out =/ its like it shoots superheated projectiles now instead of energy based hitscan beams. It also makes me worried if the the Trident makes an appearance in HD2 😢 #NotASickle
I'm glad you brought this up because I've forgotten about how it fires on HD1. The other Laser rifle looks more like what the Sickle actually looks like and fires correctly, minus the rapid fire mode.
@Mogz-hd I think they were just trying a new look and feel. More akin to typical assault rilfes in other games. I honestly don't like the look of the Sickle. That non-pistol grip style is more for a sniper rifle than an AR style. I'm still running the Breaker. Instant gratification on bug extermination. Hehe.
Whoaaa didnt know about the HD1 version. When my buddy got killed, i picked up his sickle and i was like, "oooh it shoots bullets...i thought it was lasers." 😅
As a Scythe user in HD1, I know how you feel. The Scythe and Trident are the only guns I use in HD1. They deal really good damage, and you can pulse fire to reduce DPS, but never ever worry about overheating. Or you could hold the trigger and slice through swarms of bugs with the ease of a scythe through wheat. But in HD2, it deals so little damage, has a long firing delay, a cooling delay, and super slow cooling, so you can't do that anymore. It barely kills things normally, and if you try to pulse it now, and you'll just tickle your target and make them laugh at you. I can understand most of the changes they made, though. Even though they were really fun in HD1, all the laser weapons were actually pretty overpowered. High damage, perfect accuracy, AND infinite ammo? Why use anything else? Plus the Scythe and Sickle looked and felt too similar to each other. Tapping the trigger on the Scythe basically turned it into the Sickle. So what was the point of having both guns? Especially since the Sickle was DLC only. So in HD2, it makes sense they actually have downsides to offset the massive advantage of potentially infinite ammo, avoiding reloading actually takes skill now, and they made them functionally and stylistically distinct from each other. I think the Scythe needs a decent damage boost or extra mechanic to be anything other than a fun novelty for low difficulty missions and Rover drone rave parties. But the Sickle is actually in a really good place balance wise right now. It feels good to use, but it doesn't feel like it invalidates every other non-laser weapon choice like it did in HD1. The slight firing delay offsets the potential for much longer bursts of fire than any other gun. And the heat mechanics now require some thought to use. When you overheat, do you swap weapons before you max out, and wait for it to cool off? Or do you push it to the end, then reload and keep firing? That's much more fun than just mindlessly tapping the trigger all mission like we used to. Though, I would love to see the Sickle become a true pulse laser rifle, firing rapid hitscan beams instead of the off brand Star Wars blaster bolts it fires now.
I honestly hate the look of this thing. It looks rushed and unfinished. The model is much more simple and less detailed to other weapons like the Scythe and not only that, but the way it looks on the waist of your character it`s almost comical. It looks like some bug scaled the gun to a bigger size and now it awkwardly sits on you almost like a sword on a diagonal path attached to the air. It`s lieterally so bad, it looks bugged. I don`t know how no one else is mentioning this. Other weapons sit flush with your body on more of a vertical line and looks proportional, the Sickle dosn`t. Overall I can`t bring myself to use it, even though it`s very fun and it shoots well.
Yeah for group runs, I always ran the Sickle instead of the Trident. I really think they need to rework the laser weapons as a whole to cool down as soon as you stop shooting. It really pushes them to play more like a normal gun and to just reload.
I actually really like that idea, that it's a different model/variant of the LAS-16 Sickle I kinda like this variant better anyways because "muh blaster rifle" and "for the Republic!"
have you noticed if you tap reload while you're reloading you can speed up the reload animation? Kinda like tapping the sprint button in Red Dead Online 2 when you're riding a horse to go faster.
@Mogz-hd I think just the new heavy machine gun. I wonder if it's like a rhythm mini game or just "tap as fast as you can"! Sometimes it goes faster sometimes not. Also noticed it on the Stalwart (which is my main also! Funnest primary not primary gun in the game IMO :)
@Mogz-hd it'd be cool if they made a mini "tap reload" game for each weapon. If it was a timing thing for each separate gun it would also be skill based kinda like stratagem! Pretty cool also one more thing to get good at and also for some of the crazy slower reloading guns if you spend more time with it you could learn the reload timing tapping sequence. Adds another layer of skill also especially for running and reloading with a Stalwart. Running and calling reinforcements and strats is already a special skill and requires me to change my grip on the controller. Making reloading like that would be sickle :)
I think thematically i can totally agree with you. It operates completely like an assault rifle now rather than a laser rifle. And although i do love the sound (cuz cool) I did get the same feeling that it wasn't right for a laser rifle. Name change is not a bad idea. The shooting mechanic should've been more as you described; harder to overheat but less heat clips you could dump, make it like 3.
I feel like all the weapons and vehicles in HD2 should have slightly different model numbers than they did in the first game. It is apparently 100 years later, and you'd think there would have been some changes in that time. I know they already did this with the Patriot mech. In HD1, it was the EXO-44, and the HD2 version is the EXO-45. That helps explain the differences between the two, like how they look, and how many missiles they carry. So they should do that with other things, too.
HD1's Sickle doesn't sound like a laser gun to me, it sounds like slime being shot. I'd like the HD2 one to sound more like a laser than it does currently, sure, but not to sound like HD1's. I'd rather it sound something similar to the laser weaponry in Fallout for example. The projectiles being more bullet-like is also cooler to me, because it looks like a laser-powered assault rifle rather than a generic beam weapon that most would associate a laser weapon to. The heat dissipation and lack of instant fire are also way cooler to me in HD2 than how it was in HD1 because it actually feels like a laser-powered weapon rather than a magazine-filled weapon. It has to spool up to generate the shots coming out rather than just grabbing the next bullet in the mag. It also adds a level of skill to using the weapon that makes it satisfying to use and become comfortable with- this making it different from the assault rifles already in the game. In my opinion, they should have called it the LAS-17 Sickle, because it's an improvement over the original in every way!
I don't think that HD2 Sickle is bad, as it's still one of the best horde clear weapons. And I'd even say that it's more lore-accurate than most of the guns in the game, because at least it shreds just like its original version, while the situation with modern analogues of Liberator and Justice is just sad. But... Yeah, it's not the exact same model. I hope that at some point the devs will revamp at least audiovisual effects, and maybe really just change 16 to 17.
yeah man, you totally get it. In simple terms, I was expecting more of the *pew pew pew* of the Sickle but then it went *brrrrrrrt*. I really hope they adjust it a little bit, but oh well.
Not saying the new sickle is bad but, I miss my Helldivers 1 sickle. Yeah, I wish they'd at least kept the visuals of the laser shots instead of changing it to Star Wars esque bolts/shots/bullets.
I like the sound, can't change my mind, oh and you are gonna hate what they did to the AR-20L Justice, our one and only baby And why do they had to name most stuff the exact same as their CENTURY old counterparts?
tbh i dont mind the sound either ... just not on my sickle :( i never personally used the Justice in hd1, so i dont think i'll care about that. But yeh.. i hope for the sake of all tho did love it that it gets done well in hd2
@@Mogz-hd oh it isn't, they literally kept the same name, and turned a bullpup battle rifle into a conventional layout marksman rifle, what da fuck, it was literally Liberator's battle rifle counterpart Also you missed out on it then, because it fucken slapped
