Something I’ve thought about regarding this subject is how content I was as a kid playing just the games I had. I only got new games on special occasions and wasn’t able to go out and buy the next hot thing or even just something that caught my eye. Now, as an adult with the means to do so, paired with the ability to log onto the eShop and have everything at the push of a button, it’s much easier to frivolously purchase games that end up sitting on my devices.

It used to stress me but then I decided to take it slowly and don't rush through games for the sake of it. I get depressed that way. Just take it as "seasons of gaming" and design it for you. It can be fun! I reorder my lists all the time (on my phone), during my lunch breaks or whatever, and add new ones.
    1. Make a list of the games you want to do one after the other. Mix them up, and add little notes and encouraging statements about it, and the time it may take. Don't have two MASSIVE open-world games back to back. It will burn you out, e.g.
    BATCH 1
    a) Witcher 3 (Enjoy slowly, take your time, don't rush) - (roughly 100hrs - can go more if I feel like it)
    b) Outer Wilds (don't stress about it) - (15-20hrs)
    c) Super Mario Wonder (just whack through, can put down after a while if need be) - (15 hrs)
    d) Tears of the Kingdom - (go back, complete side quests, can change with another game) (50hrs)
BATCH 2 - faster pace games (try the best ones)
    a), b), c) etc.
    2. Don't buy any more games once you have a decent list. (It's just self-control). You have to stop buying new ones at some point. The games will always be on the e-shops waiting, and sometimes better deals come up if you wait. Also, it feels great to knock them off afterwards.
    3. Play one game at a time. Focus your time. You don't need to complete it. When you're done, move on.
    4. After you've completed your list, make a new one. Have fun tackling it with different themes (e.g. old school RPG, classics, fighting games, trying real-time strategy season etc). If you complete a few games, then feel free to buy another one to "top it up" or add to another list.
    5. After I've completed a game, I rate it upon 10, how long I took to complete it, and comments about what I loved, and what I learnt about myself as a gamer (so even if I didn't like the game, I still come away with something that is useful, what I want to try more of, what I don't want to experience again). e.g. For example, I learnt I hate predator and stalker segments in games. I'm at piece with that now. Conversely, I learnt not to rush for hints when I get stuck on puzzles (which I've done and felt unfulfilled).. So now I wait, try something else, and give myself time to think and absorb the game (even writing down clues and ideas on my phone on how to tackle certain parts).
Think of tackling your games ... as a game. (works for me, hope it helps)

I have come up with a system, recently, that I plan to execute.
First off, I pick deep games and shallow games. Shallow games would be something like fighting games or shmups. I pick one or two and know that it’s a game I can just pop in and play.
Deep games are things like RPGs, Metroidvanias, and long platformers. Like Mario Odyssey. These are games that require a lot of time.
I limit myself to a few shallow games that I’ll just play in short bursts. Lumines and Ultra Street Fighter II are what I’m thinking right now. Then, I pick one deep game and tackle that when I have time for long play sessions. Right now, I’m deciding between Chrono Cross and Metroid Dread.
Once I have narrowed it down, I will just focus on those until I have beaten, or accomplished what I want to accomplish. When I have had enough of Ultra Street Fighter II, I’ll switch it out for a different shallow game.
I figure that I will finally be able to put a dent into my backlog that way. Hopefully, this system will work.

The best thing about this video is that I discovered I’m not the only person with this backlog problem I have this issue with my switch games, Xbox series X games and ps5 games I blame being a adult on why I never finish games, I always finish games when I was a kid, and nowadays I just called myself and a collector to make me feel not so bad about wasting money on games that I never finish

Just do it Zac my brotha! You got this!

Between PC, Switch and PS4/5, I have about 800 games in my backlog…part of me wants to support the devs, part of me just feels some sort of guilty pleasure when I buy a new game….even if I’m not going to end up playing it any time soon (or at all)…
This got really bad when I discovered my passion for languages and started studying Japanese a few years ago because I would keep buying games, but maybe play 1 game every 3 months.
Tbh, what I do is I make sure whatever I buy, I don’t buy full price…either a very heavily discounted game or if it is full price I make sure that is the next game I play

I have exactly that problem too ! My son makes fun of me as I've still not finished GTA V and he reminded me the game is now 10 years old ! I have games bought me and I buy some when they are on sale , but I think for me I get bored with them quickly , or if they are too difficult it puts me off playing them and so I start a new one. I wish I could be more like my son where he just starts a game and sees it through til the end before playing another one.
I have my go to Call of Duty and Animal Crossing , but then others get left. I think it's so hard to just stick to one when there are so many good games out . Then there's the problem of just not knowing what genre to play .. it's tough .

It’s definitely not just you! The system I’m currently using and seems to be working for me took a looooong time to set up, but it’s great now. I sorted all of the games into folders based on genre. Once this is done it’s easy! I picked a couple games that are easy pick up and play games (ie ACNH, Stardew Valley, etc.) that I can go to if I only have a few minutes and put those in a separate folder. Then I picked 1 game from each genre and added those to that same folder. So now all I have to figure out is what genre I feel like playing and the decision for which game is already made! But seriously, if a game doesn’t excite you anymore, let it go! Even take it off your console so you don’t have to think about it anymore.

Going through the same thing. I don't have as much time through the week to play as I did before. Some advice as I have been learning - you can't play them all. You will have to pick and choose what games you actually want to play as there are too many games coming out/not enough time in the day to play them all.

  • @RaoulDuke-od7xm
    @RaoulDuke-od7xm 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think everyone feels like there's too many games. The number of games in existence will only get bigger. It's like books, each one has a minimum time requirement. We'd like to read them all but it's okay that you can't. Balancing a couple of games at once is a disciplinary skill that might be tough to master. That's why the best selling game for Switch has no storyline. I try to only play 1st party exclusives. My backlog RPGS are the most haunting because I can only delve into one at a time so that I can follow the storyline better. One day every game will be digital and I'll be able to play my physical Switch backlog! While AI is giving your hand eye coordination a aptitude credit score while adjusting the difficulty I'll be getting into my Switch library. Some NES games are speedrun in less than an hour but some of those games took me years to beat. I cannot balance too many games at once. It's normal to not have enough time with these new games that purposefully try to make you collect things and farm hidden trinkets in games. I'm not using a guide to find every Korok Seed but that in itself is like another game if I let it get to me. However if you get review copies then it's like when family buys you clothing. It forces you to give it a chance and cut into your time. Don't give up on past games that are considered great. There's games like Metroid Fusion, OOC, DK Racing & Chrono Trigger that I can argue need to be played so DEFINITELY don't give up on your older games. I personally only play high rated 1st party games. You do a great job Zach. Video games are going to get more complex so don't let it get to you or make you feel a certain way. Do what makes you happy. You are in a position to do so. Your living the dream. The one thing that is more worth your time than anything in the world is the satisfaction with loved ones. Sometimes an hour of time with my cat making it happy can feel more fulfilling than 100% a game so let us remind ourselves that we can measure life or games in regards to being "fun" but "fulfillment" is self defined. May everyone's lives be prosperous today in the game of life.

  • @mikeschneider361
    @mikeschneider361 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The living collection approach works for me. If I'm not actively playing a game, it's listed somewhere for sale or trade. Not cheap because I'm not in a hurry to sell. Priced high enough you could replace it for cheaper if you were willing to shop around a bit or wait for a sale.
If it sells or gets traded away and you find yourself thinking about it again, then rebuy it. If you find yourself rebuying it again and again, then keep it. If your backlog is also inventory/ trade bait that keeps circulating then it'll curate itself over time.

It’s really base on what I feel like. I can only play like 15 minutes at a time on a few games each so I like “easy” games that I can jump in at any time without forgetting the mechanics. I can go thru phases where I’m obsessed with one or two games and then don’t play it for a year and come back to finish it. There isn’t a rhyme or reason for me, just based on how I feel when I see a game. I guess a lot of it is feeling recall as in how much fun I had playing those games.

Backlogs are a pain. I have to offload anything I'm not playing in the very near future because it overloads my ADHD brain. And yeah I put games down in 30 mins haha.
I've got Mario Wonder and long to play it but tempted to wait for my meds to enjoy it with full attentiveness. I did Tropical Freeze with Funky Kong before so now finishing it up on normal mode. And Kirby Dreamland I did not too long ago but I have the remaster to do after. But many new in my Nintendo wish list.
My focus can only stick with linear adventure games ATM so on Rise of Tomb Raider and trying to finish Stray. FFVII Rebirth I play mostly in linear fashion. I love puzzle games but they've gone out the window for now.
Dopamine disregulation sucks but it seems like it's an increasing problem for everyone. I try not to buy games that I know will get regularly discounted. I get all the free PC games but don't own anything Windows or a Steam Deck because I'm a minimalist and GOG games are gradually coming to Luna, or GeForce Now can fill the gap. I would hate to have tons of redundant PC games at hand.

Go by oldest first and or alphabetically.... and pi k a given console type
Write down a wish list of what you need to get through. Partially completed and oldest and alphabetically. JUST PICK UP A CONTROLLER AND JUMP ON IT!!!

I also buy analog. If i dont like it i get to still play it for like two weeks and get over half the price back towards a new game. Im also very selective in my games.

Don't impulsive buy games on sale
That way you won't have as much choice on what to play making decisions easier
Only buy a game that you'll play right away wheter they are release or there's a sale
Look up walkthroughs of games and see how long it'll take to finish them and make your best judgement

You just have to come to peace with the fact that you are dealing with a limited and fixed resource: your time. While the flow of new games and platforms will always be stronger and relentless. There is no solution other than accepting that it’s ok not to finish a game. If you played some of it, at least you have experienced part of what it has to offer.

Pick a few games you're really into, and ignore the rest. there are more things to life than gaming as well. I personally only commit to playing ALL Metroid titles. Every other IP gets consideration only.

Omg I have like over 100+ & didn't think much of it 😂😂😂. Yeah, I'm still trying to play ones that I haven't been beaten yet.
But I have made progress on some easily because I don't own the other systems that help me out. That's why I push for the devs to include QoL cheat options in their games so that if you're one with a lot of stress in life or have a job or family, then there should be a option to pick to make your play session easier. Like have infinite healths or 99 items of that items, etc.
So yeah, there should be cheat options for those that need it the most. But online those cheats don't activate etc 😂

Dude you don't have to finish games. I've finished games before and once it was over i felt bummed out because there was nothing left to chase after. Once you feel like you have to beat a game to get your money's worth out of it, it becomes a job instead of a fun hobby. Just chill on buying new games because now days it's going to take them a while to patch it up after they release it 😅😅😅

1st off, you wouldn’t believe how much life there is to live outside of video games. Of course you are not finishing these games. Way too much screen time and when Lions kick off in just over a month and go to Superbowl then what?? That’s right. Also let loose and grab a beer sometimes. Life is short.

Dude! here is my system.......only have 2 games from your back log "active". the 2 games must be opposite play styles of each other. So you only play one of your 2 "active" games at anytime! if you finish one before the other....you replace it with a similar style game in that spot.......(GAME A ...OR....GAME B) ...... it give you 2 different style choices to pick from without getting "lost in the sauce" of the game selection screen, and because you're only playing 2 games at any one time, you never forgot what your doing in game A or B and......THEY GET COMPLETED!!!
