    This implies that Nintendo had a build of Mario Kart 8 with ARM tooling ready to go when the Switch launched. This would make a lot of Mario Kart 8 on the Switch start to make sense.

      There's some evidence that the Switch SDK was forked from an INDY SDK due to it supporting compiling for A53 and the existence of an unused platform target, as well as the revision history before Feb 2015 being scrubbed.

      I think the real reason why 8 Deluxe exists was because the Mario Kart team was busy with making ARMS and after ARMS was completed, they started working on Mario Kart Tour and its 4 years worth of content updates, so they didn't have any time to develop a brand-new Mario Kart game for Switch.

    • @reddworld64

      @@lol-ih1tl I thought it was more of a way to recover money lost from prior generation. Only a small fraction of people even played it on Wii U so it was basically still like a new game to a lot of people.

      @@reddworld64 Because of Splatoon 2, Mario Maker 2 and Smash Ultimate existing, I don't think that's the reason why they ported 8 on Switch. If ARMS didn't exist, they could've easily made a Mario Kart 9 on Switch which could release slightly later in 2017 made using reused MK8 assets.

    • @jaimeerobertswarz
      @jaimeerobertswarz 27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The Switch is down-clocked to 307-330mhz which is where most Wii U games start. The Wii U isn’t down-clocked but has older hardware.
      In terms of what the Switch can produce in a new Mario Kart game graphically it would not look much better. Which is why Mario Kart 9 still doesn’t exist.
      The Switch was never meant to be the home and portable console. Its 2 concepts together from the 3DS era hence the mobile chipset.
      The Latte Cafe project was abandoned in 2015. With a disc based system being scrapped constantly.

      Multiple gaming companies said they had access for a "4k Switch" (basically a mid generation update) dev kit at some point, but this was cancelled apparently due to the chip crisis following Covid. Instead Nintendo only released an OLED model.
      The Switch 2 was also supposed to release much earlier but it was delayed multiple times for some reason. Which means the Switch 2 will use a really outdated Nvidia chip unfortunately.

Now, that's where everyone's expectation lies: which node did Nvidia/Nintendo use? Samsung 8nm (same as Desktop Ampere GPUs) or TSMC 4N (same as desktop ADA GPUs). If it is 4N, we'll be eating good.

      About the steam deck, Nintendo isn't going to have the whole system drawing ~28W in handheld like the steam deck (OG) does, and I don't think it will even when docked. So I don't know exactly what kind of battery life and performance Nintendo will choose for handheld, but I'm sure Switch 2 will have a GPU performance (when docked) at least 50% higher than the Deck. The ARM CPU has some good advantages in power consumption.

    Incredible stuff. The Gigaleak is the gift that keeps giving. This Indy prototype reminds me of one rumor from 2014 I think, about something called "Nintendo Fusion. It would connect to something called "Fusion Terminal ", tonplay games on TV.

      Yeah, as soon as the hardware development team merger was announced tons of rumors about a hybrid concept began to surface, most of them envisioning two different consoles sharing an architecture with game cross-compatibility. The reason Switch lacks all these fun features is because they aimed for a sleek OS to have as much power for games as possible (also for better user experience, setup/load times on Wii U/3DS were really long). A bonus was the console appears more "adult"/serious, not necessarily just targeting kids, but young adults as well. They will probably continue with this philosophy I feel, but I hope too they give it some more soul. At least themes would be neat, shouldn't be that hard.

    Ah man, had they kept the same architecture as the Wii U we could have had native GameCube, Wii, and Wii U game compatibility on the Switch. Not like Nintendo would have done much with it, but the possibilities man.
    Also funny how Nintendo's biggest concern with the Nvidia chip was the security, and yet the first exploit people found on the Switch was caused by the Nvidia chip. I don't think Nintendo were very pleased about Nvidia for that one.
    Overall, even if I find the Switch Nintendo's least durable console, I can't deny that it was the best thing since the Wii in terms of sales figures.

      in order to retain compatibility with Wii games, the WiiU has a PowerPC 730LE based processor; IBM created that processor core for the GameCube, it's a very old design and probably not very power efficient for mobile devices

      @RGDYouTube  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      Yeah, unless they had gone with the 2005 plan to make a full portable GameCube, it wouldn't have been directly backwards compatible, it's just certain components like the GPU that would be carried over making things easier for devs.

    • @w21aaaaa
      @w21aaaaa 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      As much as I understand people wanting backwards compatibility to GC/Wii/Wii U...
      Nintendo ditching PowerPC for Nvidia's ARM was probably one of the best decisions they've made. ARM is much, much more ubiquitous nowadays and Nvidia is currently also the leading company in graphics and upscaling tech. They're able to provide both efficiency and graphical capabilities for Nintendo which is what Nintendo's probably looking for the most.
      I'd say this decision alone probably future-proofed Nintendo's hardware progression for 2-3 decades. They're probably gonna base future consoles on the Switch for a good while.

    • @RGDYouTube
      @RGDYouTube  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Yeah, and the DS' prototype (which we made a video on) was codenamed Iris, which was also the name of a line of SGI workstations. I think it's a coincidence; until the 2013 merger the handheld and console hardware development teams were separate, and the Iris console was named after a flower.

    iirc hasn't it been mentioned Splatoon was meant for Nintendo's next console and then put on Wii U because of how complete it was? If Splatoon was originally meant to be a launch window title for INDY that would make a lot more sense than if they were waiting for the Switch as we know it. If the INDY had similar architecture to the Wii U and the INDY became NX with a new release date then it makes sense to retool it into a Wii U game instead of waiting that long while the Wii U was in a massive drought past 2015 (which the INDY might add more context too if it was supposed to launch around then)

    This is very interesting, and it shows they had interest in continuing forward with 3DS's existing features, many of which I would like to see brought back. This gives me more hope that they might actually do that with the Switch successor.
    I wonder if nowadays there is a solution that could make sending the feed to a screen wirelessly more ideal. If so, maybe they have returned to that idea for the Switch successor. I'm moreso expecting attempts to pander more to 3DS fans though, than actually putting in wild new features.

    Like, I think Kevin Perera or whoever said_something_ but it was immediately answered and the branding and marketing was at least clear on that fr that start but I hear it in every retrospective that talks about the Wii U…but I just don’t think it was generally true.

      It obviously wasn't as big of a problem in enthusiast circles but the general audience (which the Wii was primarily aimed at) anecdotally seems to have been pretty confused, didn't help that the uDraw tablet for the Wii came out right around the same time.

    • @MartinvanZ
      @MartinvanZ 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There were more factors that let to the failure of the WiiU. I Personally believe the success of the Wii also had a negative impact for its follow up.
      The Wii was bought by many non gamers as a gimmick. at the end of the console live time the hype was over. The WiiU needed to rehype the interest and the marketing campaign failed to do so. The launch titles were weak, the commercials were confusing. Also the competition from mobile gaming was really high and the 3ds was just selling well. Also In strongly remember people thinking the controller would be too big and heavy to play for long sessions on the tv.
      The whole "thinking the WiiU is just an addon for the Wii" was just one of the reasons, and I believe not the biggest reason.

  • @1creeperbomb
    @1creeperbomb 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The Switch is honestly a great concept of hardware, but tbh Nintendo sacrificed a lot of their handheld success to make it.
    The OS is essentially just a glorified game launcher, even the DSi had more builtin software features. The joycons are somehow cheaper than the DS line of control inputs, and the added sensors like motion and depth from the Wii have gone unused for the game lineup. Lots of handheld clones proved that it is being used primarily for gaming at anytime convenience and not a multiplayer experience like the DS. Even Steam Deck, which is almost a PC, is a popular platform to emulate Switch games.
    On top of all that, the change to Tegra means that the Switch is incapable of emulating even Wii games (and GC games efficiently) due to its underpowered chip and different architectural design. Lots of Wii and Wii U games have been locked to their original console. DS and 3DS games are also essentially lost to themselves because the Switch lacks the necessary peripherals to make backwards compatibility possible. And as usualy Nintendo makes ports at a snails pace and also loves to sell them at full AAA price.
    I would kill for a 4DS, but as you said Nintendo combined all their dev teams and are going to be set on the hybrid model for a while, especially now with the Switch 2 around the corner.
    I think they'd find success with the right marketing campaign. Mobile gaming had its bubble pop and is now essentially no longer a competitor if treated correctly. All they'd have to do is make a DS equivalent in specs to a phone like ROG, and make the dev kit cheap & easy to get which would allow mobile devs to make a plethora of games again to something similar to the original DS library which was huge. Even for Nintendo though that seems unlikely because they don't always reducing console exclusives.

    Man, the Indy sounds like a recipe for disaster.
    Feature overbloating (wich didn't sell more consoles neither on the handheld nor home console side) with the Wii U architecture (wich was famourly hard to work with due to being overcomplicated and outdated) and a 3D screen (wich hurts performance). Add in an extra chipset for 3DS BC wich woul've ramped up the price and the worst video stream technology of the moment, and you have a company destroyer right there.
    Thank Iwata they slowly transitioned to the Switch and did a clean cut from the WiiDS era.

Liked my comment to see if TH-cam doesn't mess with it. I did an app reload and it seems to have not ruined my I liked comment but removed it just encase.
    NX, Next? Hmm besides the Cafe and other direction there. Like the Dreamcast projects of Dural and the other it is interesting what console makers really do go through of not only part availability and hardware gimmicks or so but what really they can get good on of either project suiting for specs, easy porting/reworking and more. A lot to consider of parts, what's ideal, and more. ARM, Power PC or otherwise between different parts compatibility or dropping it all together. What they are going for to achieve the vision with powerful enough hardware besides API/software environments with it.
    But Wii U like then 3DS emulatable or 3DS and not even close for Wii U but ports like Switch or other factors hmm.
    Would have been interesting a Wii U handheld for compatibility, mirroring with cables/dock.
    I have yet to watch your Nivida 3DS prototype video but yeah the Switch similar of GPU consideration (different Tegra of course) for 3DS is interesting for sure. Would or may not have been better then Vita which wouyhave been interesting. No idea compared to the Panasonic Jungle the cancellation of the MMO handheld before or during the early Vita/3DS era.
    My smartphone Nokia 5.1+ and 8.3 5G and TV 32 inch from 2016 with a 3rd party game lags, the delay is very noticeable. The app likely is at fault besides the hardware. Or the TV processing isn't good enough which is also very likely.
    But Wii U/Vita to PS4 did processing very well for the time/struggling nowadays Vita if too much interference while Wii U being local and only to Wii U related hardware makes it useable no problem then to a modem or otherwise competition with other devices that Xbox and PS4 and others have that Wii U doesn't have.
    I think Wii U could be expanded on the menu use like Windows 8, Xbox One 2013 or other things like GBA VC manuals not pausing the game or other factors of dual screen use while dual screen phones are still basic and niche of app use.
