GOOD MORNING PHOBOS - DEAN OF DOOM - S2E16

  • Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Good Morning Phobos, a megawad released in 2017 by sincity2100, a mapper best known for collaborating with dobu gabu maru on TNT: Revilution’s Fortress of Bullets. Now, you might be squinting at this crunchy titlepic thinking, ‘I dunno MtPain, this doesn’t look like much to me.’ Then, when I tell you sincity is a vocal fan of TNT Evilution, you might say, ‘Yeah, no thanks, I’ll pass on this one,’ but let me stop you before you do. Admittedly, sincity’s visual acumen isn’t his strongest suit, but mapping is a means to an end for him, and that end is high powered combat. Sincity’s best stuff evokes skillsaw’s arcadiness, the Casalis’ searing trapcraft, and the Speed of Doomers’ pure violence; I don’t make comparisons like these frivolously. If you’re looking for speed, intensity, and lots of carnage, look no further than Good Morning Phobos. Note that I’ll be covering the original version, NOT the 2021 re-release which contains three map replacements and several new MIDIs. Feel free to give that version a spin, but I’ve never played it myself.

    Wow, didn't think about seeing that earlier, thanks for giving my game a spotlight.. TBH some of the bugs in the original version due to me testing my maps on Zandurom, and there are some clunky stuff that I encountered on replay, this time I tested and made other friends test the wad for me for bugfixing, So I'm glad I made the re-release with fixing bugs and other stuff.. so I hope you enjoy my 2021 re-release..

    Alright, I'm going to come clean here. My map was originally based on a SLIGE generated map that I remade by hand. The linearity and boxy rooms/layout should have given you a clue. When I made this map, I was going through a phase of using generated maps as an idea base for my levels (I still kinda do cuz you know, I lack originality). Even though I respect sincity2100's decision to replace my map, I am still a bit hurt that he had to since it took me a while to make it in the first place despite it being a SLIGE recreation.

    I remember playing this megawad after finding it randomly on the forums. I was surprised that a complete, one-man-megawad had not that much of attention, so I played it and I had a lot of fun. MAP32: Divided Turmoil is one of my favorite secret maps.

  • @alos8965
    @alos8965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Mt Pain, as you're aware, sincity actually replaced three maps in this megawad with three absolute scorchers - be sure to play them, because you'll be pleased with the end result. City of Endless Bloodlust and the new version of Midnight Train are superb. He also changed some of the midi picks as well as ironed out the bugs (including the broken teleporter closets in DZ II). This megawad will always hold a special place in my heart because it evokes the same feelings the original TNT did back when I played it as a kid. Also, huge thank you for reviewing this and bringing it to the doomers' attention. I feel this megawad really went unnoticed both times it released.

    It fits, but it's really weird recognizing MAP32's midi from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. He'd probably take Doomguy's case if the UAC took him to court, though, because we know Doomguy's innocent.

    19:10 Whenever you see that effect of flats bleeding into your viewpoint, on top of other sectors, normally means that the entire linedef there is missing. However, in the case of this WAD, I couldn't find any fault with the map itself, so it must have been some node builder setting the author used when saving the map, causing it to create buggy nodes. In fact, if you use the Nodes Viewer tool in Doom Builder, you can see those particular linedefs you showcase have very strange subsectors right in front of them, which I think could be causing the bleeding you see. For example, line 904 (the one with the black flat bleeding into the grass) for some reason belongs to a subsector whose first seg corresponds to line 922 next to it (a very tiny line whose front side is part of the asphalt road next to the grass). Because subsectors are there to ensure the unobstructed view of map segments within the same subsector, this means the entire line bleeds the first seg's sector flat into your view. Same story goes for line 2718 you show there as well (whose subsector's first seg belongs to line 2407).
    Then again, I could be wrong. Segs and Subsectors are a bit difficult to explain, so let's hope someone like Decino or Coincident make a video about them someday lol.

      That's because SinCity was a Zandronum player when he made this original run of GMP. Zandronum's format has slightly different node building than Boom or ZDoom, enough to be noticeable but not to affect gameplay.

    There is so much Doom out there - it can be overwhelming trying to decide what to try. I'm glad this series exists, especially when it's talking about the stuff I've never heard of. It's got a good amount of gameplay footage demonstrating the aesthetic look & gameplay style of a mapset along with a well-written script that conveys the intangible things about intensity & tone that one only gets from the actual experience of playing it. The quick pacing map-to-map keeps the videos from being a slog, and nearly all the digressions & gags land.
    Thanks for shining a spotlight on and providing a vertical slice of so many different mapsets. As long as you're still having fun making videos, I'll keep showing up to class.

    So I just played the final version of this wad for the first time, and I gotta say: the map replacements are gems. If you haven't played those, you're definitely missing out! MAP02 in particular is one of my top 3 maps of the wad, which can be largely attributed to its midi, one of my favorites in all of Doomdom. It's a simple map, but it carries all the character of the entire megawad. It flows really well, and is pretty easy, compared to the original MAP02, which creates a better difficulty curve. I highly recommend you revisit the replacements in your free time during the summer holiday, Dean. You won't regret it.

    This one isn't going to be very focused on the mapset on is going to be focused more on you Mr. Dean of DOOM. Now, for months i've been in a DOOM slump. Only really playing it because I feel like I owe it to the game. But because of your show I booted up Crispy DOOM with The Ultimate DOOM and played it on ultra violence, but I was still feeling really ehh. So it was when I downloaded a mapset called DOOM 404, I was playing it on hurt me plenty and using saves, on map 5 supershotgunning a cacodemon when it hit me. I was in that alert trance state that you were talking about in Community Chest 1. I'm going to be honest, I'm not good at DOOM, and the fact that I can never get past double digits of any modern mapset for DOOM really hurts my pride. But, it was playing a chiller, laid back mappack at my own pace that made me realize I don't need to be as good as you, you can pistol start The Plutonia Experiment on Ultra Violence for gods sake! So y'know what, fuck it, i'm going to quit acting like i'm as good as everyone else and admit that while I might be worse i'm having fun. EDIT: pace not taste

    If I had a nickel for everytime I found a Doom WAD that used Eruyt Village from Final Fantasy XII... I would have two nickels but looking up the song on Doom Wiki, about half a dozen wads have used the song and I think its interesting that the theme is some sort of musical touchstone in the Doom community

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's because you can hardly get more dissonant than Eruyt Village's theme on a Doom map. The track is sweet and introspective, almost dream-like, and the contrast with Doom's speedy, gritty, tooth-clenching gameplay (the spicier the map the better) is egregious enough to hit cognitive dissonance on the player.

    2) Rekkr: sunken island ( it's a standalone "remaster" of the 2018 cacowards winning wad Rekkr including a 4th episode. It's on steam and doesn't even cost 6$)
    3) Chex quest 1,2,3 (a.k.a the chex marketing campaign that didn't deserve to be as good as it was!)
    4) pirate doom ( dont know if this is more akin to a partial conversion but
    It deserves to be here)

I never finished this WAD all the way through, but I was thinking about Map 5 in particular a few days ago. I laugh in GzDoom every time you dodge chainsaw haha. Great episode ! Thanks to episodes like this i am slowly getting to create maps of my own. Hopefully one they I'll become as skilled as designer of this WAD it is clear to me that i just have to play it soon !

      @@DinnerForkTongue nah, chainsaw is really awesome in gzdoom! Hit detection is way better plus you can sway left and right avoiding melee animations. Cacos,Pain Elemental,Arachnotrons sometimes Mancubi and Revenants go down easily.

    Here I am commenting 16 minutes after this episode was uploaded because I was too busy rewatching the Speed of Doom episode.
    I'm a filthy casual Doom player by all accounts, I'm not even on PC anymore. Yet there's something about this show that I can't get enough of.

    This video made me check out GMP, but I gotta say, in the future I would suggest that if a wad has multiple versions with maps changing between releases, you should probably cover those extra maps at the end of the video, as a sort of bonus; due to covering this earlier version of GMP and showing me three maps the final release DOESNT have, you got me to track down the earlier release! Now I have extracted the three unique maps in this release and patched them on top of the second release for 36 GMP maps of glorious action :D
    Fingers crossed that you'll cover 'The Barracks', 'Midnight Express V2' and 'City of Endless Bloodlust' alongside the original 'Valley of Echoes' from AV in a future Sawed-Off Wads :)

    Awesome as usual. Hey, Mtpain, I found a very interesting megawad with really neat idea. Its called "The long trek back home". The idea is you start in the Icon of sin level moments after you destroyed it and then you need to go back to the entryway level by level, but now levels are different in many interesting ways, some areas are demolished and debried, some new areas accessible through cave ins and so on. It was very fun playing and I definetely wish you will check it out (and maybe make a deanofdoom episode about it).

    I'm currently playing this WAD casually. Great find on your part. I'm about to finish posting Three's a Crowd. If you get a chance, give that WAD a shot. The first 8 levels are a bit rough, but after that, it's a fantastic storytelling experience. Not many youtubers post videos on it, and it is truly an underrated gem. I'd love to hear your take on those 32 maps.

    I just got back from beating TNT Evilution on UV with the midi pack (and a midi i made myself specifically for Mount Pain, because i'm too attached to into the beast's belly), and here comes Mtpain27 to present a wad from an Evilution fan...I was right. Omens are real.
    As for this wad, I'm not sure if it'll sit with me due to my...general disinterest with Evilution, but i might put it on my wad bucket list just in case.
