- Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode was made in two days and under very unusual circumstances, so I hope you’ll bear with me. On the 28th of March, I received an email entitled “BPRD Megawad” from someone claiming to be his friend. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, B.P.R.D. is one of my all-time favorite Doom mappers. Attached to the email was a wad file called Lunar Eclipse. The person who contacted me said they cobbled together these maps from quote “all the stuff he ever sent me,” and gave music to maps that didn’t have their own custom tracks already. I’ll say right now, the choice of Eris Falling’s “Ionian Isolation” from TNT: Revilution’s Transduction map is a very bold choice of menu music. While I’m more than eager to investigate anything that has any chance to be new B.P.R.D. work, even outtakes and rejects, I am also cynical by default, so my hopes aren’t terribly high. Due to the out-of-the-blue nature of this episode, I decided to record my first playthrough of Lunar Eclipse and pad out my abbreviated reviews with clips of my reactions to it. I have no plans to make this a regular thing, so if you dislike the format, don’t worry, it’s not sticking around.

Delinquent didn’t fail to make a good WAD, he succeeded in making a bad one. That means he KNOWS how to make good maps and is choosing not to do that. If he gave a shit, he could create an amazing megaWAD.
Next April Fools, Delinquent makes a decent Megawad. Which is just generic techbases.
I feel like this sums up most of the apathetic students I've known.

THE CORRIDOOR killed me - and i have to say, THE PAIN ZONE reads like budget brand TimeOfDeath, so i by default have a fondness for it... for some reason...
Drown In Blood was the first "true" slaughterwad I ever played, back in 2005 or so. ToD's crazy mapping style is incredible for big co-op servers, he was definitely a pioneer of the genre too.. there's something super enjoyable about that eclectic mapping!

After getting into it, I actually think Broken Bones isn't all that bad, though I can see why it doesn't make the best first impression on people.
The pain elementals definitely added a fair amount of spice, using more priority enemies like Archies or Hitscanners, in combination with a few more blocking elements to break up monster pathing and make navigating the environment generally more interesting and a few snipers, I'd say this is a pretty decent speedmap! The visuals, while very abstract, are also sleek and nicely unconventional. Keep mapping, you have potential.
Can't wait for next year when the Delinquent reveals that he was BPRD the whole time.
BPRD is such an anomaly of a mapper. He either creates gorgeous, intricate works of art, or broken joke maps, and sometimes a mix of both.
I so expected the dunce cap going to Dean of DooM for getting april fooled.
Everyone always asks "WHYBEMONOTACRAB", but no one asks "HOWBEMONOTACRAB".
Every year, April Fools Day usually fills me with dread because I know my TH-cam feed will be filled with garbage, low effort "joke" videos that are never funny or interesting. Then MtPain27 came along and showed the world you CAN use this day to actually make something worthwhile that doesn't waste people's time. I went in thinking "What has the Dean concocted for this year?" Gotta say I was not expecting the result and there really is some genius in some of those maps. Makes one wonder what kind of WAD the Delinquent could make if he wasn't trying to make the Dean suffer. Funnily enough not the first time I've seen a golf map in Doom. There's a whole mod that has you playing 18 holes of Golf. The use of the Season 1-style intro is interesting as well. I wouldn't think the rushed nature would cause the intro to be different but that's just conjecture on my part. A great episode as always.

I know that this wad was chosen for the first of April, but honestly I would like to see episodes of Dean of Doom dedicated to completely forgotten shitty mapsets from the 90's . Seeing so many F is more than satisfying. :) Also, I love to see original but terribly executed ideas like the golf course

This episode was brilliant, loved every second of it. Also, one awesome thing about being second last on the list of Patrons you read out is I get to see how long it takes to get to me - and man your channel has grown a lot in the time I've been donating. It's well deserved, you earned it, and I hope you can keep up this level of quality for as long as possible.
I would argue that MAP15 is less of a Run From It clone and more of a Sheer Poison clone. (Three's A Crowd was brilliant and deserves more love.) Either way, it's actually kind of clever using slot 15 to have a branching path depending on whether you make it across the E1M8 Exit Sector or not.
The fact that he was able to replicate BPRD's style so well in the first map and he knows what you like so much means that the Delinquent is actually learning about DOOM.
The Delinqunet's reaction is priceless when he realized that Dean just gave his jokewad a C+. haha

I’m not sure if this was intended but I like how this wad can be played in pretty much any port but only plays properly in zdoom, a bunch of BPRD’s stuff was like that.
i'd love if you kept the first impressions in future installments, its fun and neat to see your thoughts raw before before being vo'd with a refined impression of the map. Glad to see one more vid squeeked in before graduation day!

Mission accomplished, Delinquent! Like... you actually put in effort into this, and I too, am proud of you! Final Tehcbase does show that you have some artistic talent too, even if said artistic talent is tailor made to shitpost on the dean.
It also shows that at least for the first few maps that you have enough of an understanding of BPRD's work that you were able to fool the dean for those first few outings.
Actually really love the live reactions, they really do add something to the format.
I love the aggressive surrealism of this WAD. The excessive meanness not so much. That being said, there are some really imaginative level ideas I like. You Better Run and the board game level in particular are really cool ideas. Also the jarring visuals of Pin Art appeal to me
This makes me wonder if the dean of doom has other students in his class. Archy the archvile? Bad boy of the class. Ryan the revenant? Chris the cyberdemon? The possibilities are endless!

lol. The Delinquent has some clever ideas in there tho, despite the intentional trolling. The map 15 exits are honestly incredibly clever, and I'm surprised I haven't seen that before. It'll be fun to check these maps out. Hopefully next year we get either Plutonia 7 or the brand new TNT: THREEVILUTION for 4/1! Plutonia 7 did get some chuckles out of me when I played it.
Man, the music for map 12!!! I'm 100% sure I've heard it somewhere else, maybe an Amiga music compilation but for the life of me I can't remember exactly where and it's driving me Nuts.wad!
On another point, the Delinquent straight up exploding out of sheer annoyance at the honor roll got me laughing good!! Better save up all the pieces to put him back together for season 3. Loved this April's fools!
I think that music got me confused with an Amiga tracker module called Homesick by E-Keet (look up "Create Music - Realmz" here on YT, Realmz is an old classic MacOS 7 RPG with a banger soundtrack made of Amiga tracker modules). Maybe I heard that track on another wad and got confused since I've been very into Amiga tracker music lately.

I must say i enjoy your april fools videos, theyre entertaining in the sense of self-aware fun that stands out from the "real" episodes. I also think that you deserve some freetime from the dean of doom or doom in general.
I cant wait to see what next season brings. Doom zero? Epic 2? BTSX 2?

Potential ideas for future April Fool's:
1) Randomly generated WAD from OBSIDIAN or similar
2) Doom 3, 2016, or Eternal
3) Wolfenstein, Quake or other non-Doom id games
4) Duke Nukem 3D or other Doom contemporaries
Just some suggestions. I think some of these could produce interesting videos.

Okay, unrelated as all hell here: does anyone in the Doom community remember Madness Combat? The style of combat in that and Doom feels WAY too much like the perfect mix, and I'm mad no one made a megawad mixing the two. Again, REALLY perfect. MtPain, could you try and plant that idea somewhere in Doomworld for some high-tier mapper(s) to make it a reality? You have far more of a reach than I'd ever hope to have.
(No, I'm not requesting this JUST because of FNF. While that was what introduced me to Madness Combat, I've grown to appreciate the OG series for what it is, and I wished I could've experienced it back then.)
Edit: yes, I know that it's all on TH-cam. That's how I even watched it after learning about it.
