PLUTONIA: REVISITED COMMUNITY PROJECT - DEAN OF DOOM - S3E7

  • Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to the Plutonia Revisited Community Project, or PRCP, a megawad released in 2011 by a ragtag crowd of Final Doom enthusiasts led by perhaps the biggest Plutonia fan of them all, Josh Sealy. You might be thinking, what’s the point of a Plutonia-themed community project when we’ve already got Plutonia 2? Well, if you’re worried about redundancy, don’t be, because PRCP, while slightly messier than it’s ’08-born cousin, arguably comes closer to capturing the look and feel of the original without coming off as a needless retread. Being a community project, PRCP naturally does have some bumpy stretches, but it features more direct homages to Grandpappy Plutonia than Plut 2 did, and it’s also a little more experimental, which may excite folks who share my love of grab-baggy first playthroughs. Also, I find that I have a greater tolerance for sequels in Doom than I do in film, TV, books, and other video games, so I say bring on the Final Doom rehashes until this game kicks the bucket. I’ll play ‘em all.

    I’m very happy with how my map performed there! As a “fun” bit of trivia, that arena that you teleport into and out of was originally meant to be part of the main map layout, for ease of flow, amongst other things, but I’d been mapping for ZDoom and limit-removing for a while and completely trashed the Vanilla limits, having never really had to worry about them in my early mapping days, so I rebuilt the whole map to fit the limits. Belial and dew were crucial elements of that project’s success, IMO!

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm guessing that arena was _just_ enough to trigger VPO when seen from the windows?

    • @jamescresswell1532
      @jamescresswell1532 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@DinnerForkTongue Originally it was way over, but after I’d simplified the visuals a lot, it was still too easy to get a view that broke it through the windows, yes. I often wonder why we go back to Vanilla Mapping, then it causes problems like this, but I keep doing it anyway…

      Also, this is the 3rd megawad to get 3 F's (not counting the master levels), and 2nd to get 2 dunce caps alongside hell revealed (again, putting aside master levels' 3 dunce caps). In fact, this shares 2/3 map numbers to get F's with hell revealed(map 31 and map 30), with PRCP being 1 map slot ahead of sharing the 3rd F, and both map 30's get a dunce cap because of course....this has been my first edition of "Pointless facts for DOD".

    This is a wad absolutely brimming with names I love to see. I'd especially like to flag up the presence of Tatsurd-Cacocaco in the line up. JPCP was the first megawad I completed (on your recommendation!), so I've got a real soft spot for those Japanese mappers. It's always great to see people from that community project elsewhere! Maybe one day my thirst for another toooooasty map will be quenched...
    Edit: Pleasantly greeting the Startan texture was one of the most brutal criticisms I've seen you give a map, I laughed out loud.
    Edit 2: The changing of the name Map 21 - Asmodeus's Circle - throughout the review was a *brilliant* reference to your original Doom 2 review. Your writing chops really shined throughout this video, but that witty callback was magnificent. One sign of a great writer is the ability to make the reader feel smart while being subtle enough to give them the feeling that they figured it out themselves. Come to think of it, the same can be said of mapping. That skill is on full display in this review and it makes me very proud to share this community with you.

    Aaah, PRCP.
    Even though Plutonia 2 is the better megawad of the two, PRCP has a special place in my heart.
    For the record, I totally agree on your take as regards to map 32. I went a bit overboard with Arch-Viles in that courtyard and there's a nasty bug in the Red key room (projectiles being able to go through one of the walls), showing a lack of thorough playtesting on my part. This bug is highlighted in Ancalagon's old UV Max demo.

Two years ago I completed Plutonia for the first time (I was scum-saved it beyond belief), but I'll probably play again, along with Plutonia II and PRCP. My only complaint is both of them don't have complete original soundtracks, because hearing stock Bobby Prince tracks over 9000 times is a real doom: it's not like they are bad, but eventually you'll just get tired of hearing them.

    @generalroasterock8114 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Honestly, if I were only to look at the productions of other mappers, Plutonia looks like a hell of a hard thing to reference outside of simply remaking the exact encounters. Making a new fight that is loud, tight, somewhat efficient, and horrid on the first time through yet downright tame on repeats looks to be Herculean for this WAD, and hearing so many explanations of maps in this set boil down to “its that one section from this Plutonia map” makes me curious about the purpose of design here. I’ve always heard “more Doom is good Doom” for this community, a sentiment I don’t agree with in entirety, but even if I did, at what point does “more Doom” become “mirrored Doom”?
    Great video, you’re getting really good at this game from only just getting back into it not a couple years ago.

    I’ve discovered this show just over two days ago while looking through decino’s linked channels on his channels page on TH-cam. It’s been my binge watch for the weekend, and I love it. I haven’t seen all pf this episode yet. You make my days easier and my Doom experience more fun.
    BTW, I’d like to recommend the wad “10 Sectors”, a community mega wad with the goal of making a level using only 10 sectors. The levels are impressive, and very hard (for me at least, a 17 year old who has been playing Doom on and off for the past two years while switching between keyboard/mouse and controller.) I still think it’d be fun for you to review. Keep up the good work, and sorry for making you read this obscenely long comment. Long live Dean of Doom!

    Working on PRCP was a weirdly exciting experience. It was all built & tested in cca 9 months total (!) and the entire process took place in Doomworld PM boxes and e-mails (!!!) between a mapper and the tester gang. In retrospect it's surprising it ever got completed at all, not to mention the speed. It was also one of the first vanilla community projects of the revival era (post-pl2), so let's say only a few people knew what exactly they were doing re: limits and testing them. VPOs were basically proofed just by Belial by playing (and crashing) in either vanilla or choco. Props to Joshy for herding all those cats across the finish line.
    The double-billed maps were the ones with most issues, and either Joshy or Belial had to step in to rescue an absolute trainwreck. In map21 KoJ created a visplane hell that Belial had to rework, but Belial was a top-tier speedrunner who *loved* tight ammo/health balance, hence the difficulty spike. Map04 was a rookie submission and was cool conceptually, but it really needed a smoothing pass from someone who knew how textures work. On the other hand map31 was so mechanically broken that Whoo gave up on it entirely and it was dragged to a semi-passable state by Joshy (with some assistance from me). It was also our decision to slap the pl2-inspired credit room there, since, you know, we had the editor open and all... We certainly couldn't add it into map29, a map that stretches vanilla limits with uncomfortable button-popping sounds. But yeah, the leftover bugs in that map were like the Australian rabbits that survived mixomatosis, it just made them stronger.
    I agree that many of the maps err on the side of plagiarism, particularly Lorenzo's map, which was slated for rejection, but in the end won over another very copycatish map (that also included a sector swastika, doh). As for Xaser's maps, Helix was his first vanilla map and he was still mostly a Zdoom mapper at that point, so he struggled greatly with just having to limit himself so much, heh. I agree the map's a wild outlier, but it was too cool to not include. And I simply disagree with your dislike of Wicked Garden's bdsm themes... can I be the next British PM?

    Nothing quite like an early spring evening with a cool craft beer and a new episode of Dean of Doom. 🙂 I have fond memories of playing Plutonia when I was younger since I couldn't find Doom or Doom 2 anywhere after moving and ended up coming across a Final Doom download (hey, that's what you gotta do when you're 12 and living in the third world) thinking it was some souped up version of Doom 2. I was a bit disappointed at first when I found out that wasn't the case, but learning there were twice as many levels to play made me excited, and Plutonia really stood out for its difficulty. I remember playing it with Doom95 and its broken mouse support and spectre "transparency" effect. What a glorious mess.
    That being said I never tried Plutonia 2 or PRCP, so maybe this is a sign. Messy community projects like this are unequivocally intriguing as the contrasting interpretations and design philosophies still manage to form a cohesive whole, like an anachronic narrative you'd see in Pulp Fiction or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Nice shout to Sunder, with the midi and platforming. Would have been cool to see evacolin do more maps.
    I agree inferior overly close rehashes of original Plutonia are redundant, definitely the overly buggy secret level and turning a once sharp Slayer into a frustrating slog. And woah that IoS map looks really painful, especially when his other IoSes in CC and PL2 seem quite alright. Though by the starting and IoS textures and the Caco fight, I can predict what monster type PRCP's final boss was intended to represent...

    Your reviews always make me want to download and play them. But I actually don't have the time to play all these levels, so now my doom directory is an unorganised mess of savegames and wads....😂😂 Thanks Mount👍👍

    This was an interesting look into a WAD inspired by the one IWAD I've yet to tackle. The Doom mapping bug has been biting into me more and more lately and maybe I should take inspiration from the IWADs to learn the ropes of Doom mapping. I'll probably pick this one up to play later down the line. Looking forward to what All Hallows Eve brings us this year.

    Five WADs that I actually recommend checking out in the distant future are Requiem, Sunlust, Winter’s Fury, and the PSX inspired duo WADs Threshold Of Pain (Special Edition) & Threshold Of Pain II.

    I remember playing this wad a while ago but dropped it around map 14. I’ve got a feeling that it references OG too much. I still prefer PL2 as it has more memorable moments. Haven’t heard about PRCP 2 at all. Would like to see an episode on it.
    Also - spoooky episode! Yay!

    • @eggboy9126

      PRCP came out just this year, and fairly recently. Which explains why you probably have not heard of it.

    I played PRCP a tad after playing Sunlust, and it was a nice refreshment. I remember more or less shutting my brain down to play it, and enjoying the experience as a whole, but that was in continuous play and I distinctly remember noclipping a bunch in map 31 for obvious reasons (that F is very well deserved). In the end, this is, well, a community megawad through and through - a few highs, plenty of lows, but there's fun to be had in the grabbag aspect of it.
    I feel like I should spotlight Xaser for a bit. From all the maps of his that I've played, he seems to struggle to fit his mapping in community projects. He clearly has the basics down pat, has great vision of what he wants to achieve, and can make some nice mean midi tunes, but from what I've played of his stuff he sometimes mixes up clunkiness with cleverness, and obsesses with grandiosity. I'd like to see him do a wad by himself, composed entirely of speedmaps, like Jimmy did with Deathless.

      Edit : I liked this WAD a lot more than you did, but all reviews were fair and just. I think because I haven't played the original Plutonia the ripoffs aren't quite as painful as they would be to a fan.

    I accidentally made the Arch-Vile infight with the Cyberdemon in Rules of Death (M08), and though I didn't want to waste my time waiting for it to kill the cybie, I found this situation so hilarious that I didn't waste my ammo on them and left with less than 100% kills.
    I actually really enjoyed Ruined Kingdom. I liked the Realm references, though truth be said, I don't think the source material itself is bad, either (in my eyes, Plutonia Maps 01-11, coupled with 15 and 31-32, comprise the essence of that megawad). This was a funny little adventure, and god, the eerie, sombre, bleak midi of Ruined Kingdom is just wonderful.

    PRCP! Now this is a personal favorite for me. Funny enough, PRCP and Plutonia 2 were among the first wads I downloaded as a teen like Scythe so I've kept them close to my heart and, of them, PRCP is a megawad that has a lot more polish to it vs Plutonia 2.
    The pacing of the maps and the action does bite harder though a few maps such as Cyberdemon Vertigo are dizzying and somewhat crass, and I feel the last map's boss is far weaker than Plutonia 2's "The Gatewatcher" but for all between the two, PRCP is almost the closest to a sequel to Plutonia 2 as we'll see. *Edit, PRCP's custom tracks such as Map01's music is where I knew this would be a treat to enjoy first time I downloaded it

    Hey, the Dean enjoyed a Pcorf map! Loved the video, never played the wad but it sure looks interesting. I'm a fan Pcorf generally, so that's at least worth checking. It's a shame T.V.'s map was so awful, I love Thomas van der Velden's work, and he has a good record with Icon of Sin maps - a great record in fact. Couldn't imagine PL2 or CC1 without him.

    If you don't mind a recommendation being thrown your way, I think you'd enjoy reviewing Super MAYhem '17 on this show. It's a box-of-chocolates community project with a fun Super Mario theme, with lots of short, punchy, and creative Boom maps. My first playthrough has been a fun time for how mixed of a bag it is, and I think it'd make for a really fun episode!

    As Decino showed, Cyriak made a new .WAD I think just named "Overboard". Think you could cover it at some point, Mt. Pain, or are you already planning it?
    It apparently has a New Game + mode (to make up for the wad's short level count,) so if the base levels aren't enough for a full episode... well, good luck.

    It's fun to see how community projects pan out compared to other wads out there. Yea, sure, there'll be the maps you'll dread playing, but that's kinda what to expect out of a CP. New and experienced mappers alike participate in projects like these, and you really never know what you're gonna get. But I don't think it's the end product of a CP that matters. Not anymore, at least.
    I believe the point of a community project was, and still is, for anyone of any skill and talent to come together and make something, and to have fun doing it. Quality control is important, yes, but at the end of the day you can't expect a tree to grow from a seed overnight. It takes time, effort, and the will of god to get to the sort of talent as some of the bigger names in Doom mapping. I should know. I'm still at that sapling stage.
    Anyways, fun vid. I wonder what's next on the table for DoD...?

    Really glad u covered this one. One thing to note to that awful map 30 is that there is a couple commander keens behind the mastermind that will kill the two cybers on the tower. im sure you already know that, and to be fair it doesnt make it any better. Because that means u still have to constantly go back and annoyingly hit that lift button and sprint back in case u dont kill it first bfg shot and she goes back up. Also I think u should look into PRCP 2 which came out this year and has much more variety and doesnt go over the plutonia remake level crutch. maps to consider playing in PRCP would be map 7,8 23,27,28, 29, and eternal's map11. and i hope to see u use DSDA doom more. i love gzdoom but i ditched saving for rewind scumming and its a better thing imo for replaying and practicing set piece fights and combat puzzles
