  • Console 1 Channel Mk III by Softube is finally here! So is it worth upgrading to the new hardware? Take a look at my top 10 favorite features that make this unit an essential part of my studio workflow.
    I dive a bit into the processing from the included Core Mixing Suite, take a peek at the new Console 1 plug-in window that allows you to adjust parameters without the hardware, and show you the new features that will impart character on all my mixes moving forward.
    Best of all, Channel is customizable to fit my personal workflow. This means I can use the features I want to fit my own needs from analog summing, to integrating outboard gear, to showing only what I want on the built in screens, and creating channel strip presets that work as great starting points for my clients.

    All of this sounds great. The one thing I don't like is that I don't have a knob for each send and each channel. But I do understand that this is something that would best be implemented in the Console 1 Fader. So if Softube creates a new Console 1 Fader for the Console 1 Channel MK III, I hope that they put 3 knobs on top of each Fader, enabling me to quickly test, tweak and automate sends for multiple channels at the same time.
    If three knobs (per fader) is too much to ask for, make it at least 2 (and add pages for the knobs, so that all the knobs control send 1 and 2 on page 1, 3 and 4 on page 2, 5 and 6 on page 3, etc.). But for the basic sends I really don't like having to press a button before turning the knob and I want to use both hands and turn two knobs at the same time. And I don't want to switch between volume and reverb (like one currently has to with Console 1 Fader). Sounds like a small thing, but really isn't.
    Without that, unfortunately, I think my old Akai APC 40 MK I doesn't need to be replaced.

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good feedback for the hardware team to consider. I think k one of the things is how to fit the most value into the most efficient workflow and desk space. Fader will have the ability to switch between volume, sends, etc. but won’t have individual knobs on each track just for the 3-6 sends. However, one workflow is that you could keep volume on the faders and sends on the “volume knob” of channel. This isn’t exactly what you are asking for, but a little closer. Anyway, more on Fader coming soon! 😉

    • @akagerhard
      @akagerhard 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ToddUrbanThanks for your response, it's good to feel heard. The ability to switch between volume, sends, etc. is already available on the current Console Fader. Having to adjust all sends on one knob (the Knob on Channel) is not good for workflow in my opinion and quite the polar opposite of what I asked for. I'd rather use the faders then, because that way I can at least dial in the send of multiple channels simultaneously and without switching. Obviously, I failed communicating why that is, please allow me to try again:
      1. Why there is a need for one dedicated send knob on each track (this is basically already available with Console 1 fader, you just lose your volume control while you do it):
      Imagine you want to get the relationship of the sends from 2 or more tracks right. If you have a knob for each track you can tweak both simultaneously without having to switch between tracks. This improves efficiency and quality a lot. Because if you have to click on a track and select "send x", there is a lot of back and forth between tracks and your ears don't stay focussed on the sound and your hands don't stay focussed on the knob. This back and forth takes time and keeps you from getting it right - it's also frustrating. If something is easy and pleasant to do, we do it. If the knob is there, we turn it. If you have to first press a button to "route" the correct track to the knob you may not even get the idea to do it.
      2. Why there is a need for at least two dedicated send knobs on each track:
      The same logic as in 1 applies. But this time, instead of imagining having to get the relationship between tracks right, imagine having to get the relationship between two sends right. It's a lot faster and better to turn two knobs at once. You could decrease the delay-send while increasing the reverb-send and would instantly have audible feedback when hitting the sweetspot. It's borderline impossible to do the same while adjusting them one by one, because you'd have to compete with near-infinite realtime combinations by switching back and forth after every slight tweak. Conclusion: Hearing many different combinations takes a fraction of the time if you have 2 knobs. Ideally, you'd have pages for every row of knobs so that you can also adjust sends 2 and 7 at the same time, instead of being limited to specific pairs like 1 and 2, 3 and 4, etc..
      Everything above 2 knobs is luxury, I'll give you that. But 2 dedicated knobs for each track that has a fader makes A LOT of sense. You only know how much sense it makes once you experienced it and got used to the workflow. Regarding your point of "desk-space vs workflow": 2 rows of knobs above the faders really don't take away a lot of desk-space. In a situation where one has place for faders, I find it hard to imagine one wouldn't have place for 2 additional rows of knobs above the faders. To me, adding these would be a no-brainer.

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @akagerhard understood and I appreciate your feedback. I’ll make sure the team knows there are people out there that might be looking for something a little bigger to have the ability to tweak 2 sends at a time. 😃

      Yes. Favorites replaces layer mode. This helped people move through sessions more quickly and with less mistakes. There were logistical reasons for this switch. I would instantly buy a jogwheel from softube to accompany this...kind of a feature i really wish C1 had. I would just LOVE to jog through tracks, especially since we are limited to ten at a time with one fader unit. Wish I could reassign the Volume knob on C1 MK2 to scroll tracks (I have C1 fader for volume and DAW volume). Some type of functionality like this would literally allow us to "fly" through our sessions, as opposed to clicking around - or what most of us do - click with our mouse to select a track and then use C1. I reassigned the assignable buttons on C1 to scroll tracks but you cant press and hold to move through a session...this is the one thing we are missing to really and truly DITCH the mouse. Try to envision what that would allow one to do for a moment...especially with the added functionality of MKIII.

      Yeah, the new Console 1 plug-in allows much of the new functionality. (The Core Mixing Suite would be a separate purchase for people who want that processing)
      Of course, if you want the benefit of the improved workflow, you’ll want the new hardware. The redesign of the premium potentiometers, touch sensitivity, response of the screens, new LEDs, ease of switching dual sections, new Tape/Preamp section, etc…. would only be available with the hardware. @G_handle in order to load and control the 2nd slots, you can use the plug-in and a mouse. But from the hardware, you would need the new hardware. The software was really meant to make sure no user was left behind in terms of session compatibility, but also to allow for some tweaking with the mouse when you don’t have the hardware in hand. As of now, Tape from Core mixing suite is all that’s in the Tape/Preamp section. But you know that’s going to grow over time.

If it wasn’t implemented in a perfect way, it could destroy people’s sessions. But they found a way to offer it while still protecting old sessions, which is key. I know there is more coming, but not sure what’s next! 😉

      @@ToddUrban Nice video! And this is exactly the question I would like to ask! Since Softube plugins are not cheap, but update quiet few times. Like Console 1 plugin version got a "useful" GUI some many years later until now,, The new Core Mixing Suite needs to paid for upgrade and not fully support old model actually surprised me. Maybe I sound like a hater but I'm not, just a long term user hope the hardware and plugin works well🙌I got a new suggestion for plugin GUI,, --- Can It always shows output meter like the console 1 screen display view do? Other Softube plugins like Weiss or TAPE also have a output side penal , easier for gain match. Plugin view needs to fold some window or scroll through or resize into smaller shape which are not very pleased to use. And I'd love to have a RTA on EQ like C1screen display view do🙏

      @@bosiiiiiiiiii Thank you for your comment. The Core Mixing Suite comes with the new Console 1 Channel Mk III hardware. You do not lose the SSL 4000 channel strip if you were using the old one. This is an additional title that you get. The new hardware also works great. It is a totally new feel with premium components. I think you will love it, as everyone has so far that I've spoken to.
      Regarding the plug-in when you don't use the hardware, the purpose of it is more to allow users to make some basic adjustments when they don't have the hardware available. Console 1 will always work best with the hardware, as that is the entire purpose, to get that hands on feel when mixing. I'm sure there will be some additional updates to the plug-in as the product develops. This is a brand new release and the company is going to keep working to make the experience better.
      I hope that helps answer some of your questions. :)

    Does this work with protools?

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes. But in the current state, you need to understand that it controls the plug-in in Pro Tools, and not the DAW. So volume, solo/mute, and pan happen at the plug-in level, rather than controlling the DAW fader. For me this is fine. I actually like the 2nd level of gain staging. All of the EQ, Shape, Comp, etc is at the plug-in level too, just like any other DAW.

      @@ToddUrban Hey Todd, I've been Console 1 since the beginning (you and I have met at NAMM) when Mk I was over $1000 and made in Sweden. The "DAW Control" functions came later, and Are pretty amazing (especially in Reaper), but within the PT universe a lot people consider the lack of these bonus features as a "Deal Breaker".
      Now, I also (unfortunately) always have ProTools around as an occupational hazard. And I completely agree with your statement about having a 2nd level of gain staging. Just like Every Other Plugin people own.
      It can be hard to explain to people that, having the DAW control as an option, doesn't necessarily mean that you should Take that option. Gain Staging your static mix within the Console 1 plugin, while leaving the DAW Faders at Unity allows for an easy Automation pass down the line.
      Now, having Console 1 sync Track Name, Track Number, and Track Color are far more important to me. The workaround for that though, is building Console 1 into your Template, which you're likely going to do anyways.
      Loading Console 1 as the First plugin in your chain, the Last, or sandwiched between other plugins Also all come with different implications.
      So, what do you think about doing a Video walking people through the various ways to set it up and the pros and cons of different strategies?

      @ToddUrban  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @G_handle yeah, it might be a good idea to do a video on that. I’m also waiting to see how the product developed over time. Just like the original, you know there will be more features and deeper DAW control as partnerships and the product grows. 😃

      @@ToddUrban I use PT too, and find that if I insert through such as 50 tracks, the track order will mess up, and a known situation is Console1 track order won't follow PT track order. But sometimes I find if I restart the PT session, console1 will re-order the tracks and sometimes will follow the PT session correctly. Is there any tricks inside of it?

      I’m not really sure what issue you had, as you didn’t identify any problems. Yes, I agree, recording properly is always important. Such a shame it's still got the 1995 GUI and you can't access the plugins GUI. and again we don't want a video on what a plugin does. And on UA Console the inputs you've hidden on UA Console come up in the Console 1 GUI. Really frustrating if you're not using 8 ADAT channels so the faders on Console 1 Fader don't follow Console. seriously guys for the top Dollar you've got on these you really need to sort out some basic problems. ever wonder why there's so many on the second hand market. and again we don't want a video and how to mix or choose reverb sounds,

      @ToddUrban  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I appreciate your feedback here. The benefit that most Console 1 users share with me that helps their workflow is that you do not see the GUI of the loaded plug-in. Instead, you get more direct feedback of exactly what is going on sonically so you are listening to what is going on, rather than being influenced with your eyes. But I know some people want to see a GUI, and in those cases, it is best to use the plug-ins as an insert if you find the GUI inspiring or creative. I personally need to work as efficiently as possible to make deadlines, so for me, the OSD is way faster.
