  • What happens when your Toyota Rav4 Hybrid vehicle runs out of gas? How far will it drive on battery power alone? Will it restart after adding fuel? How many miles can you drive once the empty light comes on? What is the 2020 Rav4 Hybrid gas tank size? Why does the 2019 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid gas tank have problems? Refueling Issues? Toyota Rav4In today's video we plan to answer many of these questions and possibly more.

      This a load of rubbish!!! I done this in my 2019 Rav 4 Excel and 2018 C-HR both hybrid cars. When the low fuel warning came on the Rav it managed 48 miles and the C-HR managed 72 miles so not sure how you got those figures. I didn’t have an OBD scanner but disconnecting the battery and reconnecting after a few minutes cleared the codes.

    Every Rav4 owner should see this video. I agree with their final conclusion. The premature low fuel light could be that toyota simply does not want owners to run out of gas. It literally disables the car. You cannot restart if even if you put more gas in.

      It applies to EVERY Toyota Hybrid, not just the Rav4! If you run completely out of gas, the ECM will very likely throw trouble codes. Everyone who owns a car with an OBD-II port should own an OBD-II dongle and have an app on their cell phones to read and re-set trouble codes.

    Just a note, after 3 failed attempts to start the hybrid engine, the computers will enter a Hybrid Lockout mode to protect the engine and hybrid components and will need to be towed to a Toyota dealer so they can clear the codes and get the car running again, or you can clear the codes. I think Toyota does this to keep the Traction Battery from discharging too much to the point where it will become permanently damaged or put it in an extremely vulnerable state where if the engine does start and try to charge the battery an overheating issue could occur and put the vehicle and it's occupants at risk

    • @adprom
      @adprom 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the mode they entered.
      Certain codes can also be cleared by restrating the hybrid 3x in a row (at least this was true on the 2012 camry hybrid).

    • @marco.morel04
      @marco.morel04 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      adprom yep I know, I just wanted to inform them what mode they entered and others in the comments that if you run out of gas never to keep starting the hybrid system, while some codes can be cleared by a power on and off sequence the Hybrid Lockout can only be cleared with an OBDII scanner or a Toyota dealer

      adprom it is very strange indeed but it seems Toyota electronics are very sensitive to voltage drops and being the Prius (and other Toyota hybrids) are computers that can drive, it would make sense for Toyota to do everything in their power to keep that battery from discharging past its 40% limit

    On the older Priuses the risk was that, since the traction battery runs the electric motor, and the electric motor is used to start the engine, if you run out of gas and then drain the traction battery, you won't be able to start the engine at all. in that case the only solution is to tow your car to the dealership where they have a 400-volt charger to charge up your traction battery. Looks like in the RAV4 they put in a fail safe that will shut down the engine before you run down the traction battery completely.

    • @laura-ann.0726
      @laura-ann.0726 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      On both the Prius Prime I used to own, and my new Rav4 Prime, the battery management computer will never allow the traction battery to drop below about 13.5% to 14.0% State of Charge before starting the ICE engine, and I assume the non-Prime Hybrids have a similar set-point for starting the ICE engine when the traction battery gets low. With a Prime, you can just plug it in to recharge, assuming you are home or at a public L2 charger, but this isn't an option with the regular Hybrids. The most vulnerable cars are Toyota Hybrids with NIMH traction batteries, as these will "self-discharge" faster than the lithium-ion batteries in the Prime models if the car is stored too long without being driven. How long this takes depends on how much charge was in the battery when it was parked after the last drive, but Ahmed the Car Care Nut, who is a professional Toyota service tech in the Chicago area (he does really excellent TH-cam vids on Toyota maintenance. and car reviews), cautions that Toyota Hybrids in long-term storage should be started and run for at least a few minutes at least once a month, to prevent the traction battery from self-discharging below the minimum level needed to crank the ICE engine. Toyota Hybrids in long-term storage that aren't started for 6 months or more, are at very high risk to have a traction battery sef-discharge below the minimum level to start the ICE engine, at which point you are going to have to get it towed to a dealership for a rescue charge.

Now we can turn our attention to the other gas problem, where some owners see their refueling going from 10 gallons to 8, 5, and even less. I had this problem on a corvette and it was due to the bladded. The metal enclosure (it the tank) did not have its air holes punched out...quality control issue. I don't have this issue. I am wondering how many do? And if any of them have checked the air holes. That bladder must compress for gas to come out.

    With the Rav4 Prime it would probably go a bit farther with the 3kw of battery left when it's all the way discharged into Hybrid mode but I would still not want to test that theory without a plan B ready to go. Having an OBD2 scanner that can reset the codes so that it tries again after you put more fuel back in really saved you there!

    You guys definitely took a pretty good risk to try this experiment, what came out of this though is by removing all the codes with the OBDII you found a way to restart and move again after adding just a gallon of fuel. I will keep this in mind for myself since I drive a Kia Niro hybrid and even when I didn't drive a hybrid I never let it go completely empty for fear of burning the pump inside the fuel tank. The fuel keeps the fuel pump in your gas tank lubricated without ant fuel it can burn out and you will definitely have to get towed and replace the pump. Next time be very careful driving on empty. Thanks for the video.

    I've been driving a 2019 Prius Prime for the last 4 years, and will take delivery of a Rav4 Prime next week. This may be one of the most valuable TH-cam videos I will watch all year. Another thing I want to point out to all Toyota Hybrid owners: the starter motor for the gas engine in your car is the MG1 motor/generator, which is powered from the traction battery, NOT the 12 volt accessory battery. If your traction battery ever gets so low that it can't crank the engine over, there is no way that you can recharge it at home. All Toyota dealers have a "rescue" charger in the service department, which plugs into the inverter, or into the DC power cable that runs between the inverter and the traction battery. This system carries potentially lethal voltage and it's why only dealerships, or Toyota-specializing repair shops, are likely to have this equipment. If you have to have a Toyota Hybrid towed in to a repair shop because the traction battery is too depleted to crank over the ICE, a session on the rescue charger is likely to cost you at least $400. So DON'T run your Toyota HSD out of gas! The possible consequences can cost you hundreds of dollars, even if no actual damage has been done. These two guys were very lucky that they had an OBD-II scanner at hand, that allowed them to clear the ECM trouble codes, or they would likely have had to call for a tow truck. NOTE: If you have a Prius Prime or Rav4 Prime, a dead traction battery is less of a problem, because you can plug in and recharge it at home without having to resort to a $400 visit to a repair shop for a "rescue recharge".

    Good to know, I drive a 2019 Honda Insight EX hybrid sedan and the gasoline engine will not power the car if the Li-On battery is dead which seems to be what you're experiencing. When I drive the car in the morning the gas engine runs but only charges the battery until I get to 40mph before the electric generator and engine work to together to provide a combination of electric and gasoline power. I do love my gas mileage of 60mpg and occasionally get close to 70mpg driving the back country roads of east Tennessee . I am wondering if you had rode around in a large city would your experience be different. The kind of Toyota you have ... well I read that the battery regenerates itself at stop signs, traffic lights. Since you were driving on a lot of highway, the car had a different story. This is purely speculation on my part. I am trying to determine if it is better for me to buy the plug-in kind-Toyota Prime because I live in a rural area. And if I got the Toyota Premium and because I always drive on the highway, I would be essentially be using more gasoline than electricity. Then what’s the point of driving a hybrid. If you give me your thoughts on this it would be appreciated.

      Toyota has come a long with with Hybrid technology. We have an older Prius C Hybrid as well and it's not as streamlined nor refined. I can't speak to the newer Toyota Prime but the MPGs and user experience with the CVT and other features is near flawless on this model with the regular Hybrid option. I believe the prime has a plug in range of 45 miles.

    • @ToyotaFixation
      @ToyotaFixation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has plenty of juice on the 12v battery. It was making all those clicking sounds on its own. Probably trying to prime the fuel. I also believe it used the hybrid electric motor to start the gas engine. The high voltage electric battery was extremely low. The lack of fuel compounded the issue. It’s definitely good to know what happens if you run out of fuel and how to get it restarted.

    What damage can it do to the battery to run it to zero? What about the computers?

    • @GeraldMMonroe
      @GeraldMMonroe 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably nothing. In Toyota hybrids the lowest the battery is normally allowed to get ("empty" on the dash icon) - is about 30 percent. This is the reason these gentleman had a problem. Say the battery is at 30 percent, and the hybrid drivetrain shuts down so it can't deplete further. What if someone tries to restart it repeatedly and they don't have fuel or the spark plugs are bad or something? The battery would deplete with each start attempt and eventually the traction battery would be permanently damaged from low soc. So the Toyota engineers have it throw a code after 3 attempts and block further starts. To reset the codes, disconnect the 12v battery cable.
