Yeah, that would be awesome. If activision can get the licence to Bruce's likeness. Apocolypse ain't a bad game, but it ain't good ether compared to Die Hard Trilogy (man this comment aged like piss considering Bruce Willis has retired from acting due to a condition that makes it hard for him to hear.)
When I first played this game as a kid I thought it was based on a movie because of Bruce Willis. I begged my parents to let me watch the movie for months but they had no idea what I was talking about. lol
My homeschool teacher saw me playing this game back in the day. I showed him a cutscene. "Look! It's Bruce Willis." Bruce leaps from an explosion screaming "SHIIIIIIIIT!" My teacher, "yep. That's Bruce Willis."
My experience with Apocalypse only goes as far as the demo from the PlayStation Underground CD (Volume 2 Issue 4 if you were curious which issue specifically), and I have to say, it was a very fun time, especially with the twin stick control scheme. Though in hindsight, it is pretty scary how this game predicted the future.
So, the final boss of this game released in 1998 sees the United States President transforming into a hellish monster? Woah, this really is gaming in the Clinton years.
It's nice to see someone else talk about this game in general. I only vaguely remembered this game because of Slowbeef and Diabeetis from Retsupurae riffing on this game a couple of years ago. Honestly I didn't know this was Neversoft's first outing, I also though it was Tony Hawk. Still, makes me wonder how this game would have played like if all the original ideas were kept in it.
I remember this more for the Retsupurae riff. Mostly because they spent three fourths of the game just reading off Bruce Willis' IMDB page. Thanks for reminding me of this, btw. Time to jam!
I never expected to have Apocalypse on my TH-cam recommendations, I had the feeling I was the only one who had this game and (especially because of how rather short it is) I played it almost countless times, I loved that game (despite its obvious flaws)
We won’t see the fourth horseman until 2021? God, I wouldn’t be surprised. You are also the first person I’ve heard compare the four horseman to the new decade. Congrats on that.
I remember when you did the game test episode 9n this game and its neat that you actually went in depth on a game I've never heard of and I played ps1 demo discs in 1999. Once petronious reference too
So many potential games for you to cover next... Overall, great video and I’m stoked out of my mind to see what you have in store later down the line!!!
Man whenever I watch this channel it makes me smile, thanks jak your videos have helped me though some tough times and I wish you the best of days, thanks jak Thank you. :)
Hey, I remember playing that game on a playstation underground disk, that co existed with Crash 3, Bugs life, and Bomberman (if I recalled correctly) Hell of a nostalgic flashback
I remember enjoying this... But it's a shame it was kind of a rushed mess. The original non-Neversoft version was a bit different apart from baldy being your sidekick, but it was far too buggy to play from what I know.
My GOD!! I played this when it was released! I was 11 years old and i fucking LOVED it!! And thats how i became a little metalhead: system of a down and Snot playing at these screens in the levels. POE and Cyrrus too. The original soundtrack of the game is awesome too! I love the street levels of this game, specially the ROOFTOPS. There are another ps1 game that looks like Apocalypse, its called "ONE".
Definitely getting this for my PS1 collection, because I love blowing shit up. Also this reminds me that I really need to get around to watching Die Hard.
Cool. Bruce Willis' character did appear as a place holder skater before they made the real life pro models in THPS1 and was originally suppose to appear as a statue in the Mall level. Neversoft also helped on the PS1 port of the first MDK and developed Skeleton Warriors for the PS1 and Sega Saturn. They later on helped different developers to make stuff for Call of Duty like campaigns and modes.
Also looking forward to the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 review. I already beat career mode and continue to play it on Xbox One. And there's another game called Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure, a Disney skateboard game built off of the THPS4 engine with characters from Toy Story, Tarzan and The Lion King.
You should also review games like Matt Hoffman Pro BMX 1 & 2, Kelly Slater Pro Surfer, Shaun Palmer Pro Snowboarder and Wakeboarding Unleashed featuring Shaun Murray, all of those games kind of play like the THPS game except modified for how those sports work.
Damn this game looks awesome. I wouldn't mind if this randomly got a remake. I wanna see Bruce Willis running through the streets killing demons to 20 seconds of System of a Down in 4K HD, that's badass
Holy crap a new review from you? It's been 50 years! Haha in all seriousness, this game looks very interesting, very dark gritty 90s, I LOVE it. And while System of a Down is great, I'm honestly very surprised to hear that Poe was featured in the game as well, they are like in my top 5 favorite bands and I don't really run into others who know or heard of them so it's cool they actually got featured in a game with one of their best songs. The gameplay while I'm sure may feel a little jank, still looks mostly palatable so I think I may actually try out this game in the future. In any case it was very cool to see where Tony Hawk got its start from this simple action game and even though you said it's not a good game from a gameplay design perspective, it's cool that you still found enjoyment for it and I think guilty pleasures like this are definitely worth a try. Anyway awesome review Jak, looking forward to the next one!
It would be awesome if there was a remake of apocalypse for the ps5!!😱 the game actually looks decently good. Btw I just need to say this u have the coolest intro I've ever seen 😂
@@SquareEyedJak The last tape I got was the hidden tape in the Streets. That was a pain in the ass. After beating it, I'm gonna look where you placed the Tony Hawk 1 levels again.
Wish there could be a remaster or remake or a sequel to it. It has potential but a few tweaks could've made it better. Also, just imagine how devastating would it be to experience best scenes in movies and game levels but only hearing the best score/song for just 20 seconds
I remeber buying this used and funcoland years ago yes i said funcoland lol yea im old but this was the first time i ever played a shooter like this on ps1 . back then that blow me away it was super cool back then
From game testing to game review, glad to see what this game really was made of. Reminds me of another PS1 title called One. It wasn't particularly good, though I made it fun thanks to GameShark. Still, good to know a company's humble beginnings before their big break.
As much sub-par video game adaptations get made (aside from that awesome Sonic movie, Detective Pikachu and maybe Angry Birds) Apocalypse would make an awesome action movie!
I really wonder what the beast in IRL 2020 is gonna be. Are wild animals gonna be accidentally freed from zoos somehow and eat people? Or will it be something else? I'm low-key somewhat looking forward to finding out the answer. Yes, that's how bad 2020 is, that it's making me look forward to another catastrophe. I really hope 2021 is a better year.
There was a rumour that a Bruce Willis statue was gonna be put in the Minneapolis level in Pro Skater 1 but for unknown reasons it didn't make to the final game
Must say appreciate putting the song and artist names on the screen for us, imma Lima look up that song control! I was digging that also. You gonna check that destroy all humans remake? Me and my kids been playing it and they love it lol. Hope alls well man.
Square Eyed Jak seems like it’d be a game up you’re alley, kinda handholds a bit, but they let you loose it’s a fun game terrorizing people doing alien stuff, you covered the spongebob remake pretty great and unbiasedly with your experience of the original so thought Destroy all humans would be a good fit for that style also lol.
I only know of this Game Existence because it advertises on the back of my Tenchu Stealth assassins owners manual. With that also being a Activision Game.
Yo would you be willing to review the original Prince of Persia Trilogy on PS2? If need be they have a ps3 version but the second and 3rd game suffer pretty hard visually with poor shadowing in the second game and some key details on the character in the 3rd. I would love to see what you think of the games
DAMN I can't believe I missed that. Honestly though, just kind of assumed it was arcade rules where you get the special gun for a little bit and then back to the default. So I was just burning through all the ammo regardless.
Hey jak. I love your videos so much and you inspired me to make my own video game review show on youtube. I'm a media student and i wanted to ask how you edit you're videos to such a too quality. I'm about to finish my cert 3 so i'm not the best at editing.
Editing is something that takes a lot of time to get good at, so stop thinking about it and just start cutting videos together, even if you don't plan to upload them because it's the best way to gain experience!
I want to correct you on the thing about Spider-Man, neversoft only made the first Spider-Man game on PlayStation, Enter electro was made by vicarious visions
Ah yes, correct. I often forget about that but even still, Enter Electro is running on the same engine because Neversoft built a damn good engine. (Only reason I didn't have any Spider-man 2000 footage was because I was being lazy and didn't record any 😅)
I've never even heard of this game. But from the footage you captured, and of course, your well put out thoughts, I can tell this is a hell of a lot of fun. It's like Michael Bay meets Hellboy: It checks out on everything. Catchy songs, overly sexualized women, big name actors, overbudgeted production, some what and semi-nonsensical plot and of course... everything must blow up. That sounds too absurd to not be fun.
12:03 Ah this game brings back so many memories. As much polish as this game lacks, you can still cycle through your weapons with L2 so you're not stuck with whatever gun you pick up, fortunately because the grenades do suck donkey dick. Back in the day i beat this game with only a digital original ps1 controller because that was all i had and it was so damn hard lol the movement and all is the same as if you had a dual shock just locked into 8 directions so it's not as precise, but it is doable i guess. And that damn helicopter fight, it took me a while and many game overs to realize you were supposed to take cover behind the crates instead of blowing them up XD And that goddamn war factory level with its crappy platforming bullfuckery took me ages to finish. Playing it now with an actual dual shock making it easier to control actually makes it not so bad.
Bruce Willis needs to be a THPS 1+2 dlc character
Darrin from Vault 801 yeah
that would be amazing
I wouldn't buy it. Just a thought.
Also Jak says Bruce don't come cheap but possible they still own his 32 bit likeness
Yeah, that would be awesome. If activision can get the licence to Bruce's likeness.
Apocolypse ain't a bad game, but it ain't good ether compared to Die Hard Trilogy

It does really come across like a licensed game for sure, I always thought it was too!
I always thought it was a movie too. They should make a movie out of it. The story is soooo good and so different.
My homeschool teacher saw me playing this game back in the day.
I showed him a cutscene.
"Look! It's Bruce Willis."
Bruce leaps from an explosion screaming "SHIIIIIIIIT!"
My teacher, "yep. That's Bruce Willis."
A Bruce Willis video game developed by Neversoft , sounds like a recipe for success.
The fact it simply exists is already legend
Too bad it went downhill.
Die Hard Trilogy was better though
My experience with Apocalypse only goes as far as the demo from the PlayStation Underground CD (Volume 2 Issue 4 if you were curious which issue specifically), and I have to say, it was a very fun time, especially with the twin stick control scheme.

lol i have that exact demo disc. it also had silent hill on it. so good
So, the final boss of this game released in 1998 sees the United States President transforming into a hellish monster?
Woah, this really is gaming in the Clinton years.
We have a challenge to Neversoft, create a storyline in which Bruce Willis looses his gun.
"If you don't like this game, you're stupid. I'm sorry for the insult but it's true."
