The Macintosh version could possibly be based on the Japanese versions released in 1990, as it was the one that gave the game that aesthetic identity we come to love (before Ubisoft changed it for the worse and replace it with Assassin's Creed).

It's actually pretty difficult to pick a favourite. First there's the presentation such as the intro. I love the original for its simple yet elegant style of storytelling. The way the body language is used is superb. On the other hand it's interesting to see how other versions have attempted to flesh it out and make it more cinematic. I can't help but love the cheesiness of the Sega/Mega CD version. As for the music, the DOS version takes it for me. It had my favourite instrumentation of the original composition.
As for graphics and animation, I love the original for doing a lot with a little. Without going into too much detail, it's probably easier for me to list the versions I liked and just say I either didn't like the graphical style or felt the animation was compromised too badly in the versions I don't list. The versions I liked were: The original Apple ii, SAM Coupe, Amiga, DOS, NES, SNES, Sega/Mega CD, Macintosh and Genesis.

Genesis also had extra levels (5 of them in European version, even though the passwords only go as far as 12) and potion effects like time stop and even the potions that added extra minutes! It controls poorly because it has a completely different movement engine, but that can make it more exciting to play because it's less grid based.... In other words, it's the most unique one, even compared to SNES, at least mechanically.. :D

Amiga and PC versions are the first conversions from the APPLE-II original release. They were made by Broderbund and are the most faithful to the original with very similar GFX and sound that are just updated and animation of the sprites that seem to use the rotoscoping idea. Then came the Atari ST and Amstrad CPC conversion. French studio Loriciel made fabulous work here. Atari ST version is very nice adding new colors despite abandoning rotoscoping for sprites, but it's the CPC version that is the most impressive with brilliant mode 0 GFX, nice GFX, perfect gameplay and offering all the content from the original version that wasn't so usual on the Amstrad computer 🤩. Surprisingly, the SAM Coupé and NES version seem to be both converted from PC DOS or Amiga version.
I love the Macintosh version also designed by J. Mechner himself 😛. It offers an insteresting and beautiful upgrade to the previous 16bit GFX used in the Amiga and PC DOS versions. And this high-resolution in 640x480, so much detailed 😍
After that, every studio took more or less liberties to adapt the game on a new machine. The Megadrive version is interesting with its detailed graphics and additional images. Everyone acclaims the SNES version while I personally find that it takes far too many liberties with the original level design, and not always for the better. The Gamegear and SMS version are just astonishing considering the hardware constraincts, as the GB version, showing that the effectiveness of the gameplay designed by Mechner makes it possible to convert the game quite simply even on very modest systems.
I'm not really convinced by the X68000/FM-Towns/PC-98 versions, asian influences are visible and clash with the original Arabian Nights atmosphere. And the GFX, despite the hi-res rendition, disturb me with their 16 color using dithering. But the version that made me laugh a lot is the Sega-CD version with its anime characters, pink and green haired, and Jaffar that look like Dracula in Castlevania, so ridiculous 🤣 And what happened to the fabulous GFX of the Megadrive version ? This Mega-CD version is so much less successful 😅.

Things I learned from watching this video-
Slamming ones nose into a wall is nothing! Dungeons should be well lit at all times.
    Apple II is shrill
    CPC likes to flick screen
SAM has footsteps like a giant and a small egg timer
Amiga He likes to run kinda chill, sit for a while after a fall
ST needs to clean that vinyl before playing that record, and he doesn't like to run at a consistent speed
PC version music sounds like the same instruments as every other game you own (because they are) and in a weird turn looks like the Amiga version.
PC-98 Blue guy sees in colour an awesome story, but I can't read it. Prince of colour artifacts and dither! Cool sword
X68000 Blue guy sees in col......... hold on a min! didn't I just watch this same version on the PC-98? that can't be right this is great system for games. Cool sword
FM Towns Blue guy se..... no no no no no what is going on here. Still cool sword
Turbografx-CD I was right to be suspicious! it's the blue guy again, but this time I can read the story as well as see it. Lower res less dithering
Game boy Princess sleeps on the floor, and I think that's why he runs like he's stiff. Sucks all the colour out of the universe
NES Bah who wants the story, get on with it. Scrolling ?? why
SNES Blue sky at night Jaffar's delight. Ridiculous slippers, everything you thought you knew about the layout no longer counts and he loves to climb and climb and climb
Game Gear Story abridged, small egg timer and small floor plates
    . Basically small
Master system Game Gear Bigger system, same game
Sega CD CD equals speaking! please stop the story drags on, I'm bored
Mac Back to an Apple, cartoon graphics
Mega Drive lay out stone slabs in stripes and don't forget some rivets.
Game Boy No bed for princess. How does he glide so much with tiny steps. Enemy looks like Link!!

The Atari ST seems to have a wider viewing angle. The Amiga sound is over the top, rather irritating. The light effect on megadrive is really nice. PC98 is very impressive.
I think I prefer the Atari version having viewed these a few times, but I think it's a great game on all the formats. Never heard of FM Towns. The SNES version looks interesting, but the character has the arms of the thing from the fantastic four.

@Videojuegos dGamer I don't know. SNES is so worst and so far away from the original and I dont like that. My first play was on Apple II (along with Karateka). I was glad to see that SEGA MD/GEN was just an improvement of the Original... and the BEST one in my opinion.
P.S. I don't know why but Genesis version have no level background music, MD have and it is just incredible. Intros between two SEGA versions are different, but I LOVE MD one, it's better I think. Even drinking of Potions in GEN/MD is superb, unlike the terrible SNES sounds or the horrible fighting noises... at least in GEN/MD fight sounds like real scimitar blades. Even Macintosh version (which is very similar to Apple II and GEN/MD) is better than Super NES, don't you think?

Interesting how both the soundtracks and the sound synthesis methods are vastly different in each system. The Apple II sounds like it uses two square waves only. While Amiga, DOS, PC-98, Sharp x68000 and Sega Genesis sound like FM synth, FM Towns and SNES sound like wavetable synth, Gameboy is two squares, NES is two squares and a triangle plus noise. Some like the Sega CD have sampled voices too.

For the most part there are basically two main versions of the game: the western original one ("Prince of Persia - The White Prince Edition") and the Japanese one ("Prince of Persia - The Green Prince Edition") although the Prince has a grey outfit in the Japanese-made SNES version while the western-made Mega Drive version borrowed the outfit from the Japanese version except it's now red and blue.
Anyway I grew up with the ST version and it remains one of the nicest of the lot. It was handled in-house by Broderbund so that may have helped.
The SNES version has some interesting extra but also some unnecessary ones. It's also censored and has rather dull visuals. Not sure what to think about it yet.
The Mega-CD version is based on the PC Engine CD version except with expanded anime intro + nicer graphics + much better sound! In comparison the PC Engine CD version has some weak sound FX and has chip music during the fights whereas the Mega-CD version has CD quality music during those moments.
The Mega Drive version is absolutely superb! Very detailed and crisp visuals. It's arguably the nicest-looking of them all but I never played it and apparently the controls aren't too good. This would be a shame because it looks so good.

psyance_ql what was unnecessary about the SNES extras?

    • @Deimos_Fresh
      @Deimos_Fresh 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

SNES version is THE BEST version of original Prince of Persia. Censorship or not, it doesn't take away from experience.
Macintosh is the best computer version of the game, while PC-DOS and Amiga is second best. For Japanese computers I only emulated X68000 and FM-Towns. They quiet similar in gameplay and looks, while music quality is better on FM-Towns. As far as I know both of them based on PC-98 version and all three have very minor differences between them, but I think it's safe to assume that PC-98 and FM-Towns is the better versions to play compared to X68000.
Sega CD version is based on one of Japanese computer versions of Prince just as PC Engine CD. And Sega CD version is actually second best console port after SNES, while PCECD is quiet bad in my opinion, but probably third best console port. The only thing I don't like about Sega CD version is the fact that music was swapped between dungeon and palace.
Mega Drive might look the best at first. SNES dungeon have a lot of additional details as well. Palace tileset might be less impressive, there is three sets of tiles for palace and some additional unique tiles visuals as well. Gameplay is where this game works as example of "pretty picture =/= good game". But if someone still interested, I would recommend playing Genesis version, as additional 4 levels on MD is not worth it.
NES version is like MD/Genesis version. Looks good, actually quiet close to PC-DOS version, but plays very bad. Master System is weird. Jumping mechanics is inconsistent. It looks nice... Personally don't think it's good.
For handheld versions, Game Gear is similar to Master System... might even be the same game. I didn't play original GameBoy version, but I have GameBoy Color version for 3DS Virtual Console. They both look descent and have some differences in graphics and plays quiet well. I like GBC version, but combat is the weakest part of both versions to the point where it can frustrate a lot.
For Apple II and BBC Micro I've used emulation and would say they plays great. Yeah. sound and music might be not the best, but for me it's okay.
For other I don't what to say as I didn't play them on original hardware or emulated. Some of them are good, some not so much. At least that's what I've seen in other's videos.
