The sword actually carries over between levels even if you don't physically collect it - it's a quirk in how the game handles state! The good thing about THAT guard(on level 8 actually) is that he is very consistent. A new strat is to actually have him push you through a wall that leads to the very end of the level.
Yes, usually you would go get the sword first because otherwise you can't pass the guard, unless you can get past the guard without killing him. There are two ways of doing this, first you can jump over him like I do here, but you can also lure him into the next room and drop down behind him.
I actually have a tutorial on how to do it on my channel. Although you can actually easily go around him instead of getting the sword. If you lure him into the next room past where you fall, you can climb up and around him and not have to go get the sword.
In level 8, at 6:36, you can save another 30 secs, by aiming to jump across from the edge, catch the other corner, and then leave shift to catch the below ledge. This is far more smoother.
man my uncle showed me this game on his pc when i was a lil kid. Used to play this game a lot🙌💯good times&the animations were so good back in the days.
Dooood this was a nice run! As for me, the farthest I could get was level 8. In the end I used that "prince megahit" exe cheat that allowed me to skip levels. lol at Jafar falling to his death instead of beaten in an epic sword battle
Level 8 is kind of the hump you have to get over to beat the game... The cool thing about "Prince Megahit" / "prince improved" is that you could use them to replay level 8.
There is a Pacifist version of this run... Unfortunatly, the last door won't open unless Jaffar dies so runners often say "Jaffar I mean you no harm" before making him fall down the hole.
There must be a bunch of swords just lying on the steps to the later levels. It was just programed that way. Probably so that the Level skip (shift-L) will work.
Well, I have made a few videos of how to do specific strats. So that is kind of a guide for Speedrunning already. I haven't made all the videos for all the strats yet. I am a teacher and I don't have a lot of time to make videos.
Thanks, that's the cool thing about speedrunning. Most people only see that one run where you didn't fail a bunch :P So the really impressive part isn't the skill per se but the tenasity.
Hi, congratulations on the fantastic execution! Question: How can I also have the SHIFT, CTRL, RESTART LEVEL, LEFT, RIGHT, JUMP, etc. keys at the bottom of the game screen? Thank you
But you did eventually beat it. I am guessing. It isn't a very hard game, but it is very unintutative. Beating Pop is like beating two games at once. You have to master these strange mechanics and then use them to beat the game. But you do feel a great sense of accomplishment when you finally beat it.
@@TimothyMakinActually, yes I beat it... and I even worked at Ubisoft on another Prince of Persia title thereafter, which included a version of this game bundled in as an extra. One of our devs had to hex-hack out the timer from the game to make it more palatable to a more modern audience ;) Still, great run!
Salve, complimenti per l'esecuzione fantastica! Domanda come faccio ad avere anche io i tasti SHIFT,CTRL,RESTART LEVEL,LEFT,RIGHT,JUMP,ecc.in basso nella schermata di gioco? Grazie Amedeo

Ctrl+G will save the game but I beleve that it only works from level 3 on. Ctrl + L will Load your save but you will always start off at the beginning of the level. I made a video about using Quick Save and Quick Load using a different version of DOS Box ... I often use that version for practicing, but it isn't allowed for Speedruns and I am not sure it would be good for them anyway.
So we know the Princess is the only daughter of the Sultan. We also know that she is not married. That makes the prince himself possibly a foreign suitor. He could be from anywhere. Most likely a viking prince, since they traveled far and wide and their presence in Persian territory was nearly constant. Viking soldiers were some of the most elite soldiers in Persian armies. That would also explain the prince's blond hair. Alternatively, could be Kievan Rus prince, or some pre-viking scandinavian prince.
A very large percentage of that area was white/caucasian, Macedonia being a perfect example. Same with Syria. The reason the demographics became darker was due to Arab Muslim infiltration from further east. They even changed the name from Persia to Iran when white Christians became the minority after Muslim invasion, the same as Constantinople in Turkey.
I played a version on Mac. The mouse played a important role in the game. The prince was dressed up as a Arab medieval warrior and as far as I remember he has to fight Jaffar at the last round....
The mouse 🐁 usually has an important role in level 8, but the in the speedrun we usually skip the mouse... However! Recently we discovered a way to have the first level 8 guard knock us through a wall landing us at the end of level 8 and the mouse saves us again!
I remember having somehow a different version. The level's color are either grey/blue or yellow/brighter, but green as in level 3 or brown/olive as in level 9. The sound was also a different one. The saw blades had higher and sharper sound just like the spikes. Being hurt by an enemy was also more a sound than a voice.
I love the PC speaker sound. That's how I originally played it. I think that PC sound messes with percise input needed for Speedrunning. Although I couldn't explain why.
@@andrejnovota5023 NyLan uploaded it two years ago, but unfortunately not the whole game. Still, these are the sounds I remember, although in my memory, they're still a bit higher, like the saw blade.
I think you could beat it... You have to remember that with Prince of Persia, the progression happens in the player not in the game. You get better at the game. The game does not get easier to beat.
Dude, this was years ago so my memory might be wrong. But at 5:20, i think you just stand their for a while and something happens, like the shadows moves or something and you get a shortcut. Can't remeber, but like falling down was bad. Are you not purposefully not taking the shortcut?
I got into this in 2020 and managed to finish the game in about 15 min and 30 sec [ish]. There was a few tricks I couldn't manage. I couldn't do the 10th stage shortcut when you jump into that pit and reapear few screens to the right / up. Also I had tons of problems getting through that level 5 shortcut. I couldn't get it to work. I also couldn't jump passed any guard but the first two so I went around them which takes a sec more per guard aprox. Also - I never was able to figure out how to go straight through the level 7 chompers. There's a trick btw to make them jam, but I couldn't do it. And also there's an amazing shortcut on level 9 that will save you extra time but I couldn't pull it off. Like the last guard can send you through that last door. The rest I was able to figure out and it was pretty awesome :D Also - I think I've seen some new insane tricks not too long ago, but I can't remember. I think it had to do with shortening the level 8..... ow man I forgot :((
Ya, we got a friend of ours on the Prince of Persia speedrunning discord to figure out that level 8 trick. You should really rechord and submit a run if you are able to do sub 20! You should join the prince of Persia speedrunning discord.
@@TimothyMakin Yeah I wanted to do it but I was too lazy to be honest. I'd have to install a screen capture app etc. Under 20 min is easy. It's those minutes below that are really hard to chop away. Also I didn't really consider my gameplay that interesting to upload as it didn't really stand out in any way. I had a pretty good start to level 7 figured out but nothing special.
@@TimothyMakin Also : I had real problems jumping pass the guards. Like I only managed to jump pass the first two and even that took me like 10 to 15 takes... and it's really time consuming to get everything right so eventually I just kind of gave up :D I have to say though' it was a lot of fun. I installed the game in march 2020 during the quaranteene and then I just played it for like 2 months and got my time down to about 30 minutes. I initially played like "no lives lost" kind of thing but then I saw a speedrun and I was like WTF.... :o O.o it blew my mind and of course I had to try and learn and it took about a month to figure most of the things out, however I had a lot of problems with some of the shortcuts and specially Level 5 beginning gave me so many problems.
I'm surprised that somehow in my childhood I've achieved beating the game and writing my nickname in the scoreboard taking in account that I'm absolutely stupid at gaming.
How do you run past the enemies without fighting them? I played this game and I thought it was forced for you to fight enemies? Is it a glitch? Just remember this game being really difficult
The game is difficult, although probably not more difficult then most Retro games from it's time. Three things make this game rather fun to speedrun: one once you know the layout of the levels it becomes trivial to navigate the levels, Two the game is low frames per second(12 out of combat and 10 in combat), Three there is few moments of RNG(Although the moments remaining are emancely frustrating). Jumping guards is usualy frame perfect.... although the lower frame rate helps. Also you don't have to worry about subpixels. I do believe that there are some versions of the game where you Have to fight the enemies... In the DOS version you can jump past them(Considered a glitch by the comunity) or you can advance past them put away your sword and run away(not considered a glitch.)
Jumping guards is considered a glitch... although I only view it as very very hard. but switching sides and running aways isn't considered a glitch.... just perhaps cowardly :)
Some version of the game have more than 14 levels, Particularly the SNES version with 20. The Dos version only has 14 and the last two aren't even considered full levels.

The Prince of Persia game is really difficult. We want to go out the door and find a sword to fight the enemy in order to save the princess trapped in the palace and also forced to marry by the head of the king.
As with any thing it is only hard because you don't know stuff. Specifically, you don't know the route the prince has to take and you don't know the controls. The route can be studied, but the controls need to be practiced. Honesty, I feel that any one can beat the game in two weeks two hours a day. And anyone who has beaten the game can immediately beat it again.
Something feels odd. He didn't pick up the sword on level 1 yet he has it later.

@@TimothyMakinFor starters, it's Jaffar not Jafar. The other guy turns into a snake! This guy just blahs.
Cool dealing with Jaffar there
Thanks! There are actually a couple of ways to get past Jaffar This is kind of just the standard way.
What a fun run. the ending is also priceless. Couldnt tell if it was a bit at first XD
During this run I had recently changed over to the in-game timer so I was confused.
so cool I never knew you could jump past the first guard I tried that so many times as a kid
I actually have a tutorial on how to do it on my channel. Although you can actually easily go around him instead of getting the sword. If you lure him into the next room past where you fall, you can climb up and around him and not have to go get the sword.
I remember trying to figure this out and dyeing over a hundred times.
One of my favorite games back in the day. Scorched Earth, Prince of Persia, and King's Quest 5.
I personally think the gameplay still holds up.
Scorched Earth? that's the one that is like Gorillas but with tanks that can move right?
@@TimothyMakin Indeed. I forgot about the Qbasic awesomeness that had Gorillas and Nibbles lol!
In level 8, at 6:36, you can save another 30 secs, by aiming to jump across from the edge, catch the other corner, and then leave shift to catch the below ledge. This is far more smoother.
Thanks for the advice. There is actually a brand new strat for this level that skips most of the level th-cam.com/video/TTg9DwFRzlM/w-d-xo.html
Anyone know how where to find and run it on W10?

@@TimothyMakin thank youu
man my uncle showed me this game on his pc when i was a lil kid.
Used to play this game a lot🙌💯good times&the animations were so good back in the days.
It's pretty easy to get it up and running on modern computers using DOSBox.
Super game of its time. Thanks for reminding me those days.
No problem. It's an important thing for me too.
"this probably isn't world record, but it's a good run."
Ya, it was kind of a shock. Of course it's not uncommon I think for speedrunners to think they did much worse then they actually did.
TIL, you don’t need to defeat the swordsmen. This was great!
There is a Pacifist version of this run... Unfortunatly, the last door won't open unless Jaffar dies so runners often say "Jaffar I mean you no harm" before making him fall down the hole.
Hang on. How did he get the sword when he skipped that in the first level?
There must be a bunch of swords just lying on the steps to the later levels.
It was just programed that way. Probably so that the Level skip (shift-L) will work.
wat a platform on it ?
Best version its on NES
This is the DOS version.
Phenomenal! I have never seen anything like it.
Thanks! There is even a faster run here th-cam.com/video/Kw4li-hOkE4/w-d-xo.html by my friend Esteban Figueroa who currently has the WR.
Please Are you make the speedrun guide?
Well, I have made a few videos of how to do specific strats. So that is kind of a guide for Speedrunning already. I haven't made all the videos for all the strats yet. I am a teacher and I don't have a lot of time to make videos.
Played this with my brother and father, eventually beat the game after many tries and several tips from my father's coworkers. Good times
Ya, I think most of these games were team effort when we first played them. The entire family helped with Monkey Island when I was a kid.
Ahh Moneky Island, another gem right there.
brings back memories.. haven't played this game since forever
Ya, it's honestly a fun game even to just play casually.
This is so what 60’s action movies felt like.
Since the sword fighting is taken dirrectly form an Errol Flynn movie more like 1930's acton movie?
Very impressive gaming skills, sir! Well done!
Thanks, that's the cool thing about speedrunning. Most people only see that one run where you didn't fail a bunch :P So the really impressive part isn't the skill per se but the tenasity.
10:53 Surely, He's the master guard of the game.
He is the only guard that has a gate behind him like that... some of the newer runs use a stragity where this guard pushes you through the gate.
@@TimothyMakin also he is one of the toughest guards with unpredictable moves indeed.
I agree.
Hmmmm this is the point in which he improved from the previous run. Cause he was lagging behind the whole play, until here.
Hi, congratulations on the fantastic execution! Question: How can I also have the SHIFT, CTRL, RESTART LEVEL, LEFT, RIGHT, JUMP, etc. keys at the bottom of the game screen?
Thank you
You can do this with an OBS plugin called "input overlay"
obsproject.com/forum/resources/input-overlay.552/
Never thought that the hardest part of this game would be to realize it is a world record run :)
This happened when we switched from a real time Autosplitter to an in game time auto splitter.
I remember once making it without knowing anything about the save function!
Ya, I didn't know about the save function. Now that you mention it I don't think I have ever used it.
Thanks for reminding me all of the times I ended up short on time in Level 13...
One of our devs had to hex-hack out the timer from the game to make it more palatable to a more modern audience ;)
Still, great run!
The sands of time speedrun is pretty awesome too.
They should put it in the Sot remake.
Great run! I beat this game in 27 years, 77 days, 14 hrs
27 is a good run too. If you reran it today you wouldn't be to far down the list.
Salve, complimenti per l'esecuzione fantastica! Domanda come faccio ad avere anche io i tasti SHIFT,CTRL,RESTART LEVEL,LEFT,RIGHT,JUMP,ecc.in basso nella schermata di gioco?
Grazie

@@TimothyMakin Grazie
Sitting here laughing my ass of watching him avoid fights lunging across people. Didn't know that was possible.
I think I remeber acidentally jumping over a guard once as a kid, but I really didn't think it was Viable until I saw CapnClever's GDQ run: th-cam.com/video/USv8OQbg73M/w-d-xo.html
4:22-4:33, 5:50 what was that? A bug?
Yes and really easy to reproduce. You can get to that level using the command "Prince improved 7"
Great job. Love the music. What sound card did you choose in dosbox? Sounds better than my old Adlib.
It's complicated. So there is this program called Munt MT-32 Emulator.
@@TimothyMakin I got Munt working the other day for Sierra games. Sounds awesome.
Do you know how to quicksave and quickload?
Ctrl+G will save the game but I beleve that it only works from level 3 on. Ctrl + L will Load your save but you will always start off at the beginning of the level. I made a video about using Quick Save and Quick Load using a different version of DOS Box ... I often use that version for practicing, but it isn't allowed for Speedruns and I am not sure it would be good for them anyway.
My first computer game , i ve never finished it
No reason you can't finish it now. I think if you gave it two attempts a day for a week you could finish it.
5:53?how did that happen?is there a bug there? and 10:41??
Sure is. The game tracks your position even when you are off screen, and doesn't switch screens as long as you are continually backing up.
ПРивет Дугин, классно играешь!
Скорее Маркс!
Pretty sure at 11:44 should have fallen down that hole. Bit of a glitch?
That is an example of what we call "hard jump." Not sure why we decided to call it that, but it's stuck.
What I always wanted to know was how someone so milk toast white could exist in Persia.
It actually depends on what graphic setting you choose.
Depends the version you're running of PoP1. Because skipping a guard is impossible with the first 2 version. You will be just killed by once.
That's not correct.
That's what always happened to me when I tried to skip a guard. He just killed me instantly.
you can skip the guard in any of the DOS versions of this game. And in most other versions as well.
There are many graphics and sound settings that drastically change those aspects of the game.
Type prince of persia 1989 with pc speakers :)
Probably this is the sound for what you re looking for
I love the PC speaker sound. That's how I originally played it. I think that PC sound messes with percise input needed for Speedrunning. Although I couldn't explain why.
@@andrejnovota5023
NyLan uploaded it two years ago, but unfortunately not the whole game.
Still, these are the sounds I remember, although in my memory, they're still a bit higher, like the saw blade.
That's great transition from WWE to Prince of Persia for Mick Foley
Oh, I will never live down the Mick Foley comparison. Oh well.
me...14 years and still struggling
I think you could beat it... You have to remember that with Prince of Persia, the progression happens in the player not in the game. You get better at the game. The game does not get easier to beat.
So basically a "show me your sword, I'll show you mine" pacifist speedrun, huh? :)
There is actually a pacifist category now. Currently 7eraser7 has the WR in that category.
Amen brother
11:00 fíjate bien.
Dude, this was years ago so my memory might be wrong. But at 5:20, i think you just stand their for a while and something happens, like the shadows moves or something and you get a shortcut. Can't remeber, but like falling down was bad. Are you not purposefully not taking the shortcut?
If there's some kind of cool shortcut here... you've just revolutionized pop speedrunning... but I don't think there is.
I will test it out when I have some time.
I have a tutorial for jumping past the first guard on my channel.
BTW sub 20 is like a HUGE achevement! You should definately post a video of it.
I love how he just ignores the guards
I am so glad I do the some of the Guards really tick me off.
I'm surprised that somehow in my childhood I've achieved beating the game and writing my nickname in the scoreboard taking in account that I'm absolutely stupid at gaming.
Maybe you are just good at cinematic platformers. Have you played Flashback or Out of This World?
It's kind of an achievement considering how hard people say this game is.
@@TimothyMakin they both look out of this world now :D
Man how would anybody think to do 11:27! Crazy! Looked hard
I don't know. I stole that strat from watching CapnClever's run!
I played this game a lot during computing class in elementary school but it was so hard I neve finished it. It feels good to see it getting completed
I remember beating it as a kid. My brother wouldn't let me play on his NES so the computer was my only source of games.
I also want to see Prince of Persia 2 speed run!😄
I have actually yet to beat Pop2. It was one of my goals, but I am a teacher now and I don't have as much free time as I used to.
You are the true Prince of Persia!
Thanks I try!
Thanks! Hopefully I will find some time and get my old World Record back!
I dont get. How did he manager to get to The end with only 15 levels?
Some version of the game have more than 14 levels, Particularly the SNES version with 20. The Dos version only has 14 and the last two aren't even considered full levels.
@@TimothyMakin tks for the info. I never played other than the snes version
The Snes speedruns are even crazyer.
i watched a documentary about the guy who made this game. the animations look really cool even now
Jordan Mechner. He actually published his Journals during the making of pop1 and pop2. I was also lucky enought to get mentioned in the back of that book.
It seems a lot harder than i remember 😂😂
I really don't think it is any harder then any other retro game.
“Okay so ah… that’s a new world record”😅. It didn’t sound like humblebrag, it sounded like you were coming back from another dimension hehe! Congrats!!
Ya, I was really confused... I probaby should have known better, but I had recently switched over to In Game Time on my timer, and I did make a few small errors and I was convinced they were much worse then they actually were. It was like I crossed the finishline balancing on one tire.
incredible action! good job
Thanks!
A bliss to watch this speedrun, nearly perfect, only some little mistakes!
insane dude
Thanks! I really hope to one day do go back and get my World Record back. But that would take a lot more time then I have now.
Love this game. Played for hours on end during my childhood years. My fastest time was like 29 minutes though… thanks to that stiff guard in level 8.
Ah, the "Lurker" fortunatly because he is soooo aggressive he is actually MORE consistent and allows for a really cool NEW strat on level 8: th-cam.com/video/Kw4li-hOkE4/w-d-xo.html
13:25 is that a glitch?
Yes, it is an integer overflow bug.
this game feels oddly satisfying to speedrun kinda like you have parkour when you do
I love the feeling of acomplishment speedrunning. Every second faster feels so good.
Actually, the first time I saw parkour, I though it was like Prince of Persia! 😄
لا يتذكرها سوى مواليد الثمانينات ونظام MS DOS
نعم انا من مواليد 1981
The Prince of Persia game is really difficult. We want to go out the door and find a sword to fight the enemy in order to save the princess trapped in the palace and also forced to marry by the head of the king.
As with any thing it is only hard because you don't know stuff. Specifically, you don't know the route the prince has to take and you don't know the controls. The route can be studied, but the controls need to be practiced. Honesty, I feel that any one can beat the game in two weeks two hours a day. And anyone who has beaten the game can immediately beat it again.
That moment when you accidently improve the WR by 2 minutes
Also, came here after the WR Progression of Prince of Persia vid.
I hope Otterspocket puts out another! There are a bunch of impressive new runner to talk about!
Wait you can beat the first level without getting the sword 🤯🤯
Ya I suppose it's so you have the sword even if you Shift-L to the next level.
