@@Oliver-uz1fs you have other reliable sun sweepers. Mainly banded ape and chlorophyll sweepers. Base 100 in a tier where garchomp and latios are present isn't ideal.

Bibarel was originally banned from gen 7Pokebilities because Simple+Unaware+Moody made it basically Moody doubled without consequences of your one stat being lowered because of Unaware
Unawere shouldnt deny Bibarel stat drops, but it comes into play to shut down opposing Bibarels, making the mon extremely overcentralizing and luck reliant

I love that Bibarel have such good abilities, Moody, Simple and Unaware. Just need a little bit of stats
The thing is is that it’s cursed with being an early route Normal type. Only Diggersby and Obstagoon avoid this curse with having a good ability and stats. Regular Linoone can maybe count due to ESpeed and Belly Drum.

A fairly hot take (and it is related to Bibarel getting banned): as much as I dislike the concept of all the Pokemon not being in future mainline games, I think a regional format has just as much merit and value to it as if the OU if the game were to get support for all the Pokemon later and the precedent for having a separation of National Dex and regional formats should stick around.
Back when Gen 6 didn't have Pokemon Bank for transferring up mons, the regional format provided brought in new Pokemon into the spotlight by virtue of what's in the meta around them. For an even older example, look at RS 200 before Advanced came around. Zangoose went from a super awesome sweeper to something that's merely good, and gradually got worse by comparison with power creep even if it's still a good and decently fast wall breaker.
Power creep in Pokemon is inevitable for a National Dex format and will give Pokemon new options even if they appear in later gens, which is how Bibarel got banned (and honestly??? good for them. Bibarel has never had a chance to be anything but an HM user for many lol). And this isn't even bringing up Doubles potential (would Pachirisu be as iconic in Doubles as it was if it wasn't an option by virtue of 2014's metagame? Probably not.) Limitations breed creativity, as they say.
Nobody finds liking regional only competitive format to be a spicy take, only the idea that Mons need to be cut from the game in order to create one was the dumb take, and that was a fairly common one around the time when Dexxit when first "announced".

Seeing how powerful Simple can get makes me want to run a doubles team with Simple Beam and Power-Up Punch Regigigas.
For real though, situations like this make me genuinely curious about stuff like trying to do something like recreating previous generations competitive in more recent games (e.g. only allowing Gen 1-2 Pokémon in Gen 7 with just the same items and stuff available to use but any and all new moves and mechanics changes are fair game)
It’s kinda unfortunate that Bidoof is seen as a meme mon, even though it is fun, as Bibarel is actually a really good mon to use in just normal runs.
Amazing typing, good moveset, evolves early af and simple is pretty busted. Defo recommend using it in runs through Pokemon games, especially early-mid game.

Zangoose has toxic boosted facade, quick attack and CC for rocks, I think it runs night slash to hit ghosts so basically perfect coverage for a tier with low power overall

Poor Bibarel. Too weak for PU, then when there's a reverse Power Creep (A "De-Power Creep", maybe?), it becomes TOO strong for PU *AND* NU. So it either doesn't get used because it's too weak, or doesn't get used because it's too strong & banned.

Simple, of course, does have a downside, in that it doubles ALL stat changes - including decreases. Using Superpower? That's -2 Atk and Def, son. Get hit by Intimidate? That's -2 Atk for ya. Got Mud-Slapped? Eat dat -2 accuracy, boyo.
It's kinda a double-edged sword...except that, since stat drops are pretty rare in competitive, the positive edge is larger than the negative edge.

In theory, Intimidate seems like it would check Bibarel due to Simple doubling the attack drop. However, not every format and tier has a lot of good Intimidate users. There is Mawile and... umm... Quilfish? Arbok? Not the strongest selection. Hey, Luxray has a type advantage!

So in theory in a double battle, you could pair Bibrael with a level 1 mon that holds a focus sash, and has a priority fighting attack, to activate a simple Weakness Policy, and get a 3x attack off on the very first turn?
You could use a Hitmonchan with minimum special attack and Vacuum Wave, that way you aren't using a slot on a level 1 Pokemon. You could run Inner Focus on Chan so that you don't have to worry about Fake Out/Intimidate pressure on him as well. Hitmonchan also has some pretty good support moves, like Coaching, Helping Hand, and Fake Out.
IDK how good Bibarel would actually be in doubles, but self-activating Weakness Policy is pretty good in general. It's why stuff like Coalossal was a threat in VGC.
you could, but being down a mon from turn 1 probably wouldn't be worth the temporary super powered bibarel, especially since it doesnt have the bulk to live particularly long if its getting attacked twice a turn.
that being said, ultra powered bibarel is still a very silly sight, so its a good play anyway

The removal of stronger things allows the old stuff to have a time to shine
So certain move tutor moves, held items and tm distribution has changed. A very notable example is what happened to Zapdos. It used to be great, but it lost moves like Heat Wave in BDSP, which left it with only Electric, Normal and Flying moves, allowing pokemon like Steelix to wall it. Others include moveset changes like Altaria losing Dragon Dance.

I'm fully aware that having a metagame centered around bibarrel counterplay would be unhealthy, but that's usually just how these things go anyway, for a short while before a ban. did nobody think to counter simple with unaware? Or did they notice what could've happened and cut it short?

Looks like the beaver doesn't need evasion luck from Moody to be good in a lower tier...I laughed at FSG's comments in his video on how Moody Bibarel teamed up with it's own pre-evolution to destroy UBERS, of all tiers, in early gen 5. Good thing Moody got banned in Smogon singles. Smeargle with that ability was beyond broken.

So just because a mon is too overwhelmingly powerful for a tier doesn't mean it sees immediate use in the tier above. The RU meta is very different from the NU meta and the conditions that allowed Bibarel to dominate NU may not necessarily be present in RU. Tiering is also determined by player usage, so even if a mon is good in a tier, it will not rise to that tier unless a bunch of people start using it.
