imprisonform mew actually also exists in linked and its really messed up there also.Linked is a format where you can choose 2 moves simultaneously so you can just click imprison transform immideately and if your faster you basically force your opponent to switch.I remember specifically teambuilding around this by having a volt absorb lanturn with only electric moves so that if imprisonform mew hit me volt absorb would heal back all the hp I lose from struggle while the mew would eventually run out of PP since transform gives you 5 pp on every copied move

While true, I think it also comes down to how many counters those versatile sets have, as well as whether the counters overlap. In Mew's case here, it is the fact that each viable set had wildly different counters that couldn't be sated with a single Pokemon, meaning that you had to effectively guess twice when it came to choosing your Pokemon. A lot of mons have tons of versatility in this format, but that versatility usually has a common weakness, or at least reasonable ways to work around it even if you weren't perfectly prepared for a more niche strategy. Mew lacks that common weakness or ability to react to its sets; all of its viable sets need one or two turns to lock the opponent down or win outright.
This is what I thought of first too, like, how many levels deep do you have to go to counter the counter to your super gimmicky strat... with MAGIC ROOM of all moves? XD
It wasn't an unknown of strategy before. I do remember years ago seeing some Smeargle use the tactic, but obviously Smeargle is nowhere near as bulky and fast as Mew is.
Zacian also got imprison for some reason, and it's pretty gimmicky yet good strategy in vgc cuz it completely shut down opponent zacian if you outspeed it or win a speed tie
@@ninjagaro. If your Zacian has Swords Dance it won't ever be using Struggle in VGC lol, as Imprison sets run Behemoth Blade, Sacred Sword and either Play Rough or Protect alongside Imprison

Hi, I'm not absolutely insane at it, I was top like 300 at one point I think buuuuuut Yeah The higher ladders are absolutely chaotic, after shit like Zygarde and genesect were banned the meta just EXPLODED
The weird thing was that Imprison/Transform was a strategy I remember as far back as Gen 6. During my brief hayday in the format I lost many a game to a Smeargle running it. It's weird that it finally became too strong in Gen 8.
Smeargle is really weak tho, so it just died before it got relevant. I think mew got this only recently and its stats are all just above average, so its much more threatening
With Smeargle, it was mostly relegated to whether your opponent was expecting the strat or not, and even then only worked if their usual strategy involved enough setup that Smeargle wouldn't lose too much HP before transforming, which was not often considering Smeargle's low base stats outside of Speed. Now that Mew has it though, it's being used on a Pokémon who has actual resistances and solid bulk stats and can fully invest in them because it just copies your exact stats minus HP once it transforms anyway, which makes the set a lot more potent than it was with the art dog.
When I saw Imprison on SwSh's TM/TR list, I soon thought, "Mew's gonna love this new addition." This moveset didn't pop off in OU like I thought, but at least Mew got to tear up a couple of unofficial metas like 1v1.
i used to use imprisonform in monotype as a stall breaker it was pretty good vs stally types like poison or normal, but it didnt really help me with the worst matchups (like dark hyper offense....) so i eventually changed it
I remember I made an OU alt where I specifically matchup fished for stall teams and this asshole set alongside Calm Mind Reuniclus was the team's anchor. Good times

As a player who was around for the start of sm 1v1 the reason is that there was not much of a strong outcry from the community at the start of the gen nor the leaders caring enough to actually take action and then deeper into the gen sm 1v1 developed an identity with zmoves
In 1v1, z moves offered so many different strategies and options. Pokémon like lele, instead of running specs they could use a z crystal. Z-Psychic is still a tactical nuke that OHKOs a lot of things, but you have other options like z-reflect (an effective +3 defense) to beat physical attackers.
I didn't play Gen 8 OU back then, but iirc when crit me not mew was gaining popularity, some people started running imprison transform Mew to bluff/counter it. Pretty funny strategy.
I didn't even know Imprison worked that way. I thought it only disabled the moves the user had at the time of its use, not all of the moves the user has afterwards for the duration of the Imprisonment.
I actually came across someone doing this strategy in shield a long time ago and thinking that's the biggest brain strat right there. I still managed to beat the guy however since it wasn't 1v1

I feel like mew has the quintessential recipe of pokemon banned from 1v1. A strong set with few counters but also the ability to adjust and beat these checks like koko and mimikyu.
Try max speed mew with: Hypnosis Block (traps foe) Imprison Transform The hypnosis is optional it just buys you time. If you get the other three off they’ll be stuck with struggle. If they had a baton pass strat planned you have 4 or more turns to use it for yourself. Pair well with Gengar Hypnosis Perish song Mean look Drain punch
It’s exactly why I dislike Urshifu a lot, which is popular in 1v1. Not even knowing the form means you have to account for twice the amount of sets, all of which have polarizing matchups. So many teams are already in an awkward call turn 0 just because there’s no telling whether it’s single or rapid strike, and even then, you don’t know if it’s banded, taunt, bulk up, sub, etc…
This reminds me, a while back in Doubles I came up with a Mew set comprised of Imprison, Protect, Transform and Trick Room. It’s pretty sick. Shuts down Protect, the most common move in Doubles, letting offense rampage Shuts down opposing Trick Room, letting faster mons wreck a popular play style Sets up Trick Room, letting slower mons wreck offense And.... Can shut down any one pokemon with Imprison + Transform, forcing it to switch out or Stuggle to death.

(Also, I thought imprison locked the user out of using the move as well, basically saying "now nobody gets to use it", although the existence of double battles would probably make that design very awkward very fast).

It's pure evil when your opponent uses block, imprison then transform and runs roost. You can't switch, can't OHKO, can't do anything but struggle.
