I am 76 and my wife and I have owned 5 afghans over the years. Yes, they need grooming, but no where near what this video states, unless you want a show dog with a show coat. And yes they are a challenge to obedience train, but they are by no means stupid. The people who rate them in the bottom 10 in trainability also rate them in the top 3 when it comes to problem solving. Anyone who is lucky enough to own an afghan and truly connects with one emotionally will get to know what it is like to be a part of one of the worlds glorious beasties.

They’re considered hard to train because they are very independent and have a sense of purpose.

Own 6, and well trained, but yes took more time than other dogs.

My late wife had two Afghans. I fully understood her, I had a Borzoi, and a Whippet. They are all similar, but in different sizes.

I own an Afghan hound and they are one of the most pleasant dogs to be around. They will cost you a lot to keep up hair and proper diet. You will need to brush them twice daily. Grooming is every other week when they are young. Weekly Grooming when they are 3 years old. They love to lay at your feet. They do not like boundaries. You will need to have a sensitive heart towards them because they get their feelings hurt easily. You will need to have the upper hand on training them. They hat the word NO. They much rather you speak direct command with reward afterward.

I have had 5 Afghan Hounds. The first when I was 5 years old, I am now 60. They are not at all stupid, far from it. They are not slave dogs living to please every human, so those into "control" often project their failure in training, on the breed. They are not for everyone that is true, but when you've earned the love and respect of a dog that is independent, opinionated and discerning, through practicing consistent patience and kindness, you have a real treasure and perhaps have done some work on yourself to boot.
If you aren't willing to put the work into the relationship, do not get an Afghan Hound, or a Chow Chow, or an Akita or any other "difficult" independent thinking breed. Just because a dog doesn't respond to you, does not mean it is stupid, as some commenters say. It means you aren't up to the challenge. You don't have what it takes, so you'll never achieve the prize.❤

I had an Afghan but never did that well with the hound. However he was totally devoted to my father who could train him to do anything - that dog lived for over 18 years

I was presented with an Afgan hound at a rescue centre, apparently to be put down the next day. I am 6,3" the hound towered above me, when he put his paws on my shoulders, was so excited and friendly, I was told he was difficult, no he was not, I left with this hound. I stopped on the way back, my girlfriend said "what are you doing" I said "this dog was going to be put down tomorrow, if he is so bad it is better he has freedom for a while and dies happy but I new in my heart he would return after a good run, he did and jumped in the car. I loved that dog, his freedom, his spirit, intelligence. as I type I can feel our connection, I miss him so.

Think of Afghan Hounds as large cats. They never forget. Mine recently saw his breeder after a 5 year separation and knew her. They learn with one try--if they want to learn something. I have had afghans for 50 years, and, with respect to Mr. Coren, his evaluation of afghans bears NO resemblance to any afghan I have owned. Remember, training an afghan is like training a cat. They are independent thinkers, and 80 repetitions bore them.

Afghan hounds are among the most intelligent dogs out there. Have been owned by many Afghans over the last 44 year’s. They are the greatest dog ever. Just because they don’t, set, play dead, roll over an fetch only means that they don’t mimic. They are free thinkers that love their family, especially their person with all of their hearts. They are awesome guard dogs, and would fight to the finish if their owner were in any harm. One spring day a few year’s ago I put some food on the stove to cook. I then went out in my front yard to plant some flowers while my food was cooking. My Affies were in my front window barking and barking which they don’t normally do. I felt something wasn’t right. I came inside, and instantly could smell the strong smell of gas. Something has happened and the fire went out on my burner, and gas was leaking out. My dog saved our life. They are extremely intelligent. Love be my Afghans with all of my heart ❤️! I now live with five Afghan’s, and am a senior lady. They each have their own personality. We share my house. Have a huge 6 foot fenced back yard and a doggie door. They go out each morning, and race each other and play hard. They come back inside, and take their place on the couch, bed, or stretched out on the floor. Wherever I go around the house they are always following me like a pack. I am their alpha. Afghan hounds are the greatest pets that has ever owned me. U see “you don’t own an Afghan hound. They own you”. God Bless each of you in Jesus Name!❤

      @Tonya Breckons Hi Tonya,
      I agree with your comnent.
As I'd stated obedience doesn't equate to being bright.
As a Saluki owner I'm fully aware of ancient sighthounds and their nature.

I own two Afghans, and the video is incorrect when it states they are aloof with strangers. Not true. My dogs are socialised to be around my friends, and they are very affectionate. Also, while not guard doges per se, males are excellent watch dogs and protective of their owners and property. I have owned Afghans for many years, and although I love all dogs, I have no desire to get any other breed. And their beauty takes your breath away. I highly recommend!

Any hunting or herding dogs breed is easily labeled as difficult, hard to train, independent, not for anyone…🧐
The reality is, any working breed is ( not all individuals) highly intelligent, and they need lots of physical activity.
For any young fog, just like kids, early “childhood development “-
TRAINING AND PATIENCE, rewards and LOVE IS THE BASE OF TGRIF LIFETIME SUCCESS.
Without the work, yea I, repetition and lots of practice and praising, results are not going to appear.
So the question is are the owners up to the challenge.
Keeping a dog or more is a huge responsibility, and should be.
But some people don’t think like that.
Also non of the high energy breeds will ever be able to show their full potential, unless they get their fair share of exercise every day!!!
Otherwise like kids, they get crazy miserable and mischievous and difficult to handle.
    Just like some young guys
    😆😆😆

A mile is probably a very low estimate.
    My large collie wants 4.
And he is a calm boy otherwise…unless there no walk … then 😈👿😈

    Two and a half cups??
My collie boys eat between 6-8 and they are absolutely not fat.
Though there’s 3/4 miles of walks.

I grew up, taking care of a kennel of Afghan hounds. My mother used to breed and show them and I had a couple champions. They are super sweet they like to jump up and dance with you and lay against you, but they are dumb as dirt my God, those dogs are dumb. And like you said, don’t ever go out without one on a leash because they go off like a rocket and they’re too stupid to come back. The only thing I could use to get them to pay attention was liver or putting the hose on, they love playing with water like sprinkler systems. Still run through a back-and-forth. And they are very hard to train. The good thing is I’ve only seen aggressive ones and mean ones when the owner is the same usually they’re the sweetest dogs you’ll see but for some reason afghans and mastiffs do not like each other and mold usually go after each other, I have no idea why but I’ve seen that happen. A lot at dog shows it must because the afghans are too stupid to challenge a mastiff.

The video just specified they're very intelligent, not eager to please and independent. It was probably notbthe dog, but you who wasn't able to know how to get along with one.

They are not dumb in any sense. They just don't people please.
Highly independent and can think for themselves.
You've got to earn their respect.
Obviously not a dog for those with limited thinking
