Hyundai Kona vs Ford EcoSport - A Pint Sized Battle

  • The 2018 Hyundai Kona and 2018 Ford EcoSport are two of the most recent sub-compact crossovers to land in America but the two couldn't be more different. The Kona is an all-new design while the EcoSport is a tried-and-true design coming to us for the first time. The Kona drives like a lightly lifted hatchback while Fors channeled their inner Escape when designing their smallest go anywhere CUV. One has a standard turbo, the other makes a turbo optional, one has headlamps where you expect and the other does not. One has a hatch, the other has a 5th door. Which is right for you? Let's find out.

I just drove my new Kona Limited with AWD, Dual Clutch trans, and 1,6T engine from Roseville CA in NorCal over Echo Summit (7382 el.) on I-50 to a hiking destination on Hwy 89 with three passengers plus myself. I had no trouble maintaining 60 mph and up to 75 mph for passing in the passing lanes. Very curvy steep road but the Kona handled great.

I am always amazed that people see the rear door of the Ecosport as something that will give you problems when parallel parking. We live in the Netherlands, a small country, but hardly ever parallel park. When living in the US, same thing, we never parallel parked our car's. As a matter of fact, since my spouse and I differ in length quite a bit, the way the Ecosport rear door opens is fantastic for us. Wish there would be more car's like it. Unfortunately they stopped making the Ecosport.........

I love the influence that the SUV/Crossover craze has had on very small cars. Using the increased vertical space has meant they are much more practical and I think it's helped with the styling too. I was very sceptical about the SUV style about 10 years ago, but I concur with several comments that state if we were to invent the car from scratch today, the sedan style would not be the preferred option. Think cars from 80 years ago: Tall, high ground clearance, big wheels and very upright. Roomy too for their lenght.

I pulled a Kona out of a intersection with my EcoSport back in January. Subcompact SUVs are a compromise not much sport or utility. However I think the Ecosport 2.0L has more utility. Higher clearance bigger engine and a little heavier. And a 2000 lb towing capacity.

He didn't discuss towing capacity. The Kona can tow 2000 lbs but not with the the dual clutch transmission. Every ecosport can tow regardless of the engine option. Both engines of the ecosport use the same transmission as is used in the ford escape. The jeep renegade is the only other sub compact CUV with towing capacity but it too depends on the choice of engine and transmission options. The Kona is visually a little more attractive but I like the ecosport's looks just fine. The ecosport's acceleration is dismal but 0-40 is actually pretty good so it works really well in fast moving crowded city streets. If you're not planning on towing why spend the money on a subcompact CUV. if you are planning on towing, the ecosport is a serious competitor with less confusion. Every ecosport can tow and every ecosport is equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes standard on every trim level. Fuel economy, I drive at 70 and that gets me up to 30 mpg hwy. All the competitors may benefit similarly to the speed limit but the ecosport is a better choice than some people give it credit for.

Spent a year hating the Kona front end. Spent another year not minding the Kona front end. Then I fell in love with the Kona front end for 6 months and bought one (Kona Luxury AWD 2L 6 Auto) in may of 2020. FIVE year 100,000 Kilometer warranty. Wife said "now this feels like a "MY sized car". Took the car back to the dealer and wrote a check. The 2L 6 Auto (Luxury) was $4,400 less than the 1.6 Turbo, 7 speed Ultima. It's a grocery getter with power leather seats (and power lumbar) good in snow loaded with safety electronics AND it has Android Auto. Safe and happy wife makes a happy home and husband. Wanted that florescent lime colour but no luck (took a bright White one). For the record, I'm 77 years old and my wife is 63 years old and we live in a mountainous area of B.C. in Canada. I drive an Infinity FX AWD (white).

I have a 2018 Eco Sport with the 2.0 an 4 wheel drive, I bought it used with just a little over a year ago ( 2022 ). I havent had a problem with the way the rear door opens so far. I've got power windows, heated seats an steering wheel, speed control, tilting steering wheel, a nice info mont, a moon roof, an 17" tires an wheels. I like the way it drives an handles we haven't got a lot of snow as of yet, but what we had last year the automatic 4wheel drive work well. Even though it runs good an is fast enough for most situations, it could use the turbo version of the 2.0 used in the escape ( why Ford didn't I have no idea ) as I think it would out run the Kona, as my 2014 4 wheel drive Titanium Escape was pretty quick. My Escape didn't have heated seats or steering wheel, nor a Sun roof an the radio an entertainment screen as well as the system didn't work as good as the one I now have in the ECO Sport. The back seat was a little more roomer in the Escape. The back headrests as well as the front fold down which make the head rests a little close to your head ( same as the Escape ). All in all I like the ECO Sport just fine I can keep up with the traffic on the interstate an manuver quite well, if forgot to mention that my ECO Sport has the blind spot side view mirrors which alert you when a car is in your blind spot which my Escape didn't have. So far I would rate my ECO Sport just as good as these other small cross overs an would even been better than some if had turbo charge that I believe was over 200 hp. The only thing I can't figure out is why didn't come out with more accessories for it like a little more off road package ( I know it's not a real off roader an most people wouldn't take it to k crawling or anything like that, but for mild off roading. It could stand to have a tow hitch since it has a fairly good towing capacity, I read where it was tops in towing capacity for it's type of vehicle. I'm sorry but these reviewers don't spend enough time with the cars they have to really get to feel it out. I have read both good an bad reviews on the ECO Sport which is fine, but I think it gets a bum rap. Now maybe if I own it longer an might feel the same way. But I've driven it on highways an Interstate with 75 mile an hour speed limit an have had it close to 100 mph an it did fine. This is my review of the 2018 Ford ECO Sport.

Whenever I'm in dense traffic, I always switch to sport mode, where there's a notable difference, but still not as quick and smooth as I would like.

    • @coo1rim
      @coo1rim 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I also have the 2.0L, but in Luxury trim. Locked AWD in the snow with snowtires is quicker then anything else under the sky and Kona 2.0L encourages you to leave it in locked mode all day long. For city use, passing at under 3000rpm is ample and feel quicker then every other 2.0L NA engine... However, for aggressive driving, it quickly runs out of power at higher rpms. Sports button on 2.0L is garbage and should be deleted since it makes the car less drivable.

In fact, to give you an idea about the amount of advancement we have made of late in norms, some models built here are exported to South Africa but unlike the South African market, our regulations require certain safety equipment as standard regardless of the variant such as rear parking sensors and frontal airbags and crash compliant structures with a speed warning at 50mph and above.

The differences here mostly stem from a vehicle originally designed for a South Asian and South American market versus a more up to date clean sheet design aimed at the North American and European markets. The Ford is better suited to the flexible hauling demands of vehicles in developing nations. Anyone who has seen overloaded mopeds and event bicycles in South Asian countries can understand those needs. Taller and squarer cargo capacity make the EcoSport more flexible for carrying families and even commercial delivery duties. The greater ground clearance is useful in environments where rough (often gravel) roads are the rule. By the same token, overall performance (both power and handling) is less of a priority in the overcrowded urban environments of South Asia and other developing nation markets.
In contrast, the Kona amounts to a sort of "super hatch" better suited to suburban Costco runs and US/European highways where getting up to speed on an on-ramp is a common challenge and the biggest cargo challenge is hauling the the kids' hockey gear. It's not a "hot hatch," of course. But it is a hatch on steroids. Alex' reference to the Buick Enclave is telling. It amounts to a more luxurious version of the same sort of vehicle.
Overall, the EcoSport strikes me as an interim placeholder for a clean sheet design of a Ford Fiesta "super hatch." Hyundai has already designed that vehicle.

I've watched tons of these utility vehicle reviews and NONE go into ANY detail on roof racks. It seems like these suvs both have the capacity for that. Plenty of folks, like myself, enjoy biking and kayaking and need a vehicle that can carry the types of things that can't fit into the interior. So why isn't that being addressed here? And what about towing capacity?

I have the 2016 Ecosport. I would still choose the Ecosport over the Kona because the materials used in Ecosport are better and high quality. Also the cabin is very quiet like you barely hear anything outside once the doors/windows are closed. Plus, I also love the height clearance and the comfortable ride it gives.

Kona is far superior, Ecosoprt is horrible. Pretty much all cons mentioned only apply to the Kona 1.6 Turbo. Just get the 2.0 base Kona instead, it's still much quicker than the Ford, has the same type of transmission and costs less. I don't see a single reason to buy an Ecosport over a Kona 2.0. And for people who want more power the Kona 1.6 Turbo is the only option out of those two.
Alex is a great reviewer, but this time he seemed influenced by his preference of the looks of the Ford (and I am sure most poeple would prefer the Kona looks wise).

The back door, I DO NOT LIKE on the Eco Sport.... BUT, at my age, I do not want a faster car, I want one that I can get from point A to point B and feel SAFE... Living in FL, with so many trucks on hwy 27, I want to sit up higher... Besides, to hard for me to get in and out of a low car with my back problems... I have a 2005 Mercury Mariner which I love... As you can see, it is under 36,000 miles!! No, I do not drive much.... No traveling... It's never been out of state.... Gas mileage sucks so anything better will be great... I do not rear camera, or blind spot warnings and now that is a must with arthritis in my neck this past year.... So many great buys right now at a dealer that I won't mention as they only have 5, 2018 with under 20,000 mi. !!! I figure this will be my last car at age 70.... Besides, we have been FORD PEOPLE for so long! My Dad was even named after Edsel Ford!! Yes, he got the Edsel when it came out and traded in a year..... He never kept a car longer than 3 yrs and after he retired from the FORD CENTRAL OFFICE building in Dearborn< MI and moved to FL, seems he was buying a new Ford Every Year just for the heck of it.... He really hated the Bronco!! Loved the review!! Get job....
