Two months ago we purchased a new 2018 Hyundai Kona SE , and are extremely pleased with it so far. The color is called Crystal Black metallic with black and gray interior. In 2 months we have almost 5 thousand miles on it without 1 complaint. The ride is pretty good considering the overall size. It has a 2.0 liter engine matched up with the 6 speed automatic transmission. Gas mileage on the highway is averaging about 35 mpg. Really happy with that. And of course you can't beat Hyundai's 5 year 60 mile bumper to bumper warranty. Nissan can't touch that. This is our 5th Hyundai product and no problems out of any of them.

I also bought the Kona .......the gas mileage is excellent, the AC is w0w and she stops on a dime. I felt safer in the KONA it just had a heaver more comfortable ride, and passing was a snap.
Walter DePriest if don’t mind me asking, but where do you live? The reason I’m asking is we live in a cold winter climate and wondering how good it is in the cold and icy conditions.
Just recently purchased a used 2018 Kona Ultimate with the DCT and the 1.6 t engine. This little unit handles like a go-cart and goes like a bat outta hell. Never thought I would be this impressed by a little 4-banger after driving v8’s for years but I have no regrets thus far with this purchase.
I just got a Kona 2 months ago and love it. Zero complaints. I'll never own another Nissan product. Everybody's going to CVT transmissions which are junk. The Kona still uses a traditional transmission that shifts. Much more reliable. Plus the Kona looks badass and fun to drive. Plenty of power and very comfortable.
Great video! Looking forward to more comparison videos. I think between the two test cars, the Kicks looks better, but if I could spec a Kona out the way I would want, I like the Kona. You can spec it out with a lot more up level equipment. Nissan’s CVT transmission is a deal killer for me though. Way to many issues.
wow..thanks for this video these 2 cars are actually on my list to buy this year. and it's now 2020 lol. But in terms of exterior color, i like the kicks whit and black 2 toned styles plus the remote start feature
Great comparison review! I've had my Kona SEL AWD (same Pulse Red with black roof as you tested) for over three months and happily no rattles or wind noise yet! I'm very pleased with it and regularly get well over the 30 mpg estimate in highway driving...more like 35 mpg!
That’s awesome! It’s a good look, I really like the black roof too. I’m suspecting this one (a press vehicle) has been abused and might be a ore production model, not sure. But it felt very solid and I’m happy to hear you’re pleased with it so far! Thanks for sharing!
@@dawson.strachan03 ??? look at nissan reliability these days. This is not 90s where nissan was as reliable as toyotas, and hyundai broke every 10k miles. Nissan reliability is on par with FCAs.

i'm a new owner of the Kona 1.6T and this vehicule is fast and really nice while we have 6 month winter with -30 degree celcius almost each day. AWD with turbo are the best
I prefer the Kona, hands down. I care about the driving more than the materials of the interior. Something tells me the higher trim line of the Kona may have a bit more leather and shiny carbon plastic detailing.
I hear ya! The Kona is a solid all around option. Yeah I wish I could have had a higher trim Kona..then compare to other vehicles but that’s what they gave me. Thanks for the input and for watching!
Purchased the Kona fwd 2 engine with lane assists, safety lock breaking, sunroof, and heated seats. Already have put on 11k. Within 3 months lol. actively on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC. Only Drawback I found, the GPS looses satellite all the time. Which effects the lane sensors. Use sport mode all the time going up on mountain roads and freeways.
That’s sweet! Glad you’re getting your moneys worth with all those miles lol. That’s a bummer but I’m sure it’s still worth it. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your new Kona!
Kona AWD with 1.6 turbo. Much cooler looking car. the kicks is a redesigned juke. Had a juke for 1 year and sold it. Nissan service leaves a lot to be desired
@@kickthesky I'd recommend taking a look at a Rogue Sport if you'd like to take advantage of incentives available for Nissan loyal customer who lease their vehicles. Especially if you're not happy with the Kicks.
I enjoyed your review. I love the Kona and will be buying one this spring. I have a Kia Soul now and wanted to stay with the Hundai/Kia family. I am glad Hundai came out with this car. The CVT transmissions I heard are not good or reliable. Thankfully Hundai does not use them.
Thanks Trish! Very cool...it’s nice to stick with a brand you’re used to. Don’t blame you in the Nissan CVT...I’ve heard of horror stories on other cars. Hope you enjoy the Kona when you get it!
Great review-thank you! I rode along in a Kona in a test drive with a friend last month and was pretty impressed! She bought the Sonic Silver SEL. Since then I've compared the Kicks, Soul, Compass, Kona and Crosstrek - and I'm leaning towards the Kona!
The Kona is the clear winner. Reason why is because of the value, transmission and warranty that you get. I'll take a 6-speed automatic transmission over a CVT any day of the week. Smooth shifts instead of that rubberband feel you get with a CVT. Also conventional 6-speed automatics are far more reliable. You can get a base Kona SE with AWD for $23K which is a heck of a bargain along with a multi-link rear suspension which makes a difference. Hyundai's 10yr/100K warranty is just icing on the cake.
Kona all the way!! We currently have the "Toyota Corolla IM" and being that our lease is ending soon we are looking at options but I'm leaning more into the Kona. It's only my hubby and I and we just became empty nester's so this is a perfect size for us. Thank you for the reviews.
When looking at these trim levels, the Kicks totally appears to be the better value! The Kicks offers more safety technology, a larger trunk, less hard to the touch plastics, and more advanced exterior lighting features... I honestly believe this is the case because the Kicks is on a slightly different level than the Kona. The Kona is slightly larger and heavier, but it starts at a much higher price point. If someone is looking for AWD and a more powerful engine the Kona would probably be the more practical choice, but if they want more fuel efficiency, don't need as much power, and can settle with only FWD; the Kicks seems like the clear value leader when you are comparing both of these vehicles optioned out to $22k. This was a spectacular Comparison Review, Nolan! I am looking forward to more coming in the future!
You always have such great points with every video and I appreciate that! You’re exactly right...they are definitely different in a lot of weighs and trims show that. This isn’t a very good apples to apples comparison but the first one I could line up with what I had access to. I would almost always elect for AWD and more power, so I’d go Kona. Thanks for writing in bud, take care!
@@PrimeAutotainment, Thanks for replying! As far as features go, the Kicks seems like the clear value leader for $22k, but when it comes to driving dynamics (eventhough I haven't driven either); I can imagine the Kona would be more promising once behind the wheel. Once again, keep up the great work, Nolan!
One thing, Nissan CVT vs standard 6spd. Also forward collision avoidance will be standard starting in 2019 for the Kona. www.lemonlawcase.com/problem-vehicles/nissan-cvt-problems/ "Some of the most common issues with the vehicles directly relate to the transmission. Reported issues include loss of power, transmission jerking, transmission slipping, CVT coolant hose leaks and failures, and a CVT error message being displayed. These problems call the Nissan CVT transmission reliability into question and can result in serious harm to unsuspecting drivers." Nissan has not fixed this issue unless you consider extending the warranty a fix. Ill pass on anything Nissan until its resolved regardless of price. Thats just one of many links about the issue above. A simple sesrch will result in many others.
To say nothing of the Kona having discs all around and an automatic. I can't believe no one's said the CVT is a deal breaker, like they do on every sedan review.
I own a 2018 Kona. There are three models, two have the 1.6 turbo engine and the other, a straight 2.0. Because I bought the car with no money down, I had to keep my costs down, so I bought the lowest level with the 2.0. MISTAKE !!! I was coming from a 2013 Cruze with a 1.4 turbo and it was great. The 2.0 engine is seriously under powered. As far as space, my family of three drove Chicago to OBX and it was fine for all of our luggage and gear. Overall, it is a fine car for the cost but if you can, buy the upgraded model !!
I bought a Kicks and I love it. I dobt care about the name or flying down the road. To me it really cute and comfy and not cheap looking. I love the design. It does what its supposed to do. Mercedes has one that looks quite similar. My goal car soon. Thanks for the video.
I think I have to test drive this Kona before deciding on the Kia soul I like the price all the gidgets and gadgets also space is important . Great review .
I was debating between these two vehicles (2021 Kona and 2020 Kicks - both pre facelifts) and although I loved the extra tech of the Kicks and lower price I just couldn’t get past the Nissan CVT and complete lack of front passenger middle armrest so I went with the Kona 🙂
Y’all used like the base model kona and loaded out kicks pretty much. The loaded out kona looks so much better and has lot more better tech features. Kona all the way.
Yea it’s nice that the Kona offers a lot more features. At the end of the day it’s all about price and what you get for your money. But I agree with you if I could have had a higher trim Kona (that’s what Hyundai sent) I would go for that!
Yes. This comparison is not apples to apples, so it skews people’s perceptions negatively. Can’t compare a mid trim line with a top of the line trim, even if they both cost $22K.
I have the kona surf blue SEL , I’m looking into the kicks for mileage . Although it says it’s better on gas I feel like it isn’t . Nissan is amazing on gas ! I’ve had one before . I feel like that is an important factor .
@@garry1220able agree, but Hyundai is going CVT, unfortunately. The 2020 Elantra will be cvt, and it surely will be placed in their other vehicles also. Maybe if it affects sales, they with go back to regular automatics. One reason I bought my 17 Elantra was because of the good old automatic. Previous car was cvt. Liked the car, hated the cvt.
Purchased a 2019 kicks a few months ago. Love it so far, tires are crap in our VT winter weather so I need to get some winters but other than that, nice and roomy, perfect size, great gas mileage. Reminds me of my 2007 Pontiac vibe which is still going strong at 220 + thousand miles.
I wrecked a 16 Tucson SE AWD last week. Now I am leasing a 19 Kona SE AWD. Going down on Monday to pick it up. Unfortunately, At this time I am unable to afford the higher SEL trim. I prefer the 17" wheels. And a few extras they give.
Kona is an SUV that drives like a hatchback and that's a good thing. Maybe that's why it won car of the year in Spain and US at the same time. Once you get over the plastics and you fit at the back seat, everything else is good.
The Kona limited trim manufactured after June 2018 have the improved headlights. The initial ones were a bit weak. I bought a white limited with gray interior and AWD. Getting 32mpg average using it as a commuter car. It is a short wheelbase ride (jostles you some) but ok for what it is designed to do (be a hatchback on stilts).
Just adding a little more. Before having my Kona limited edition, I had MB C300 for 3 years. For the price, C300 is almost double expensive. In temrs of engine power, they are nearly equivalent. For noise, C300 is better. For all other functions, nav, and safety advisory systems, Kona is outstanding and not in any position for comparison with such weird European philosophy of UI/UX. Before getting Kona, i made serious comparison with Audi Q3. And my conclusion was that Kona is way better in terms of all incluidng engine power and noise.l than Q3. I think Hyundai really made something.
Best one I’ve seen so far I like the fact that it is shorter than the kicks but has a bigger engine. Because they frequently drive on I five to Seattle and I want a more stable more powerful engine. I am totally also interested in the cargo space behind the backseat andIt Hass to fit golf clubs etc.
Cargo area better in the Nissan although rear seats not even close to flat when down. The Nissan Rogue Sport (aka Qashqai) is larger but has slightly less cargo space. Kicks and Qashqai are pretty close together, almost compete with each other. I like the look of the Kona better, more interesting.
Kicks gives you way more for the price; I don't think most people will miss not having AWD availability - I've never been stuck in a light weight FWD vehicle - so why spend the additional $,1500 for a system I don't believe provides that much effectiveness. But the more powerful Juke version of the 1.6L engine is dearly missed! Still, the value proposition of the Kicks is hard to beat!
Although it’s not apples to apples (Top trim vs mid trim) they’re still the same price. Hyundai sent this specific vehicle and the Kicks was what I could readily get my hands on. Let me know what you think!

I was shocked at how cheap the materials are in the Kona. But I don’t know what the higher levels are like. And all models should come with standard Safety Features.
Thank you very much, I appreciate that and want to get more videos!
I was surprised too...even though it felt solid materials were disappointing. I agree on the safety! Thanks for the support!

Haha I’m no king but I appreciate the kind words! That’s pretty sweet that you’re a restaurateur...thanks for sharing that. I’ll always keep that in mind! Thanks for taking the time to write, take care!
I love my kicks. According to my kicks' computer, I have gotten 43.7 mpg.
That’s awesome, fantastic numbers. Hope you continue to enjoy it!
The highest i got with mine was 42..before it was totaled out in an accident sooo pissed
2020 Kona SEL sunburst orange ..brought May 8th ..🔥🔥🔥🔥
I bought a 2019 kona. Im in love with it!! It was my bday present to myself!
Woohoo that’s awesome 😁
I just bought a Kona Ultimate and love it! It's 2018 with only 5,500 miles on it. Got a great deal on it!
I own a Nissan Kicks and I totally LOVE it! ❤️
Heylin Rojas that’s awesome, glad to hear it!
Do you still like it? I've been looking at one.
Same!
I love my Kicks! We named her Billie Jean, after the underglow lights! Didn't know about them until I was running an errand at night! Blew my mind! A very cute feature!
Glad to hear it, very cool! 👍
I already bought Hyundai Kona Sel AWD in May 2019....Just Love it....Thank you for this Video
Thanks man! I agree with you. I love how much you can get in the Kona too, appreciate your input!
I'll go with the Nissan Kicks.. I am a Nissan fun n thinking about getting one in the future..
It's definitely cheaper but the turbo Kona smokes the kicks easy
I'am Your Newest Subscriber Great Videos I Want A Nissan Kicks Drove A 2018 Today The Dealership Wanted To Rip Me Off On The Price
Leasing a Kicks and I love it!
wow..thanks for this video these 2 cars are actually on my list to buy this year. and it's now 2020 lol.
Kona all the way.. I just hate that CVT and will never get my vote. Well done Kona, you win my vote!!
Kicks for me!
Thanks for the input!
I’m getting the Kona soon
I bought a Nissan kicks 2018 in September, and I love it :)
Glad to hear it! 👍
What is your average mpg? Do you actually get 36 on the highway?
Bought mine in August 2018. I love it!
Kona all the way, especially the Limited trim. I’ll easily take a DCT over a CVT any day.
same here
At least the kicks engine won’t have to be replaced after 10k km like my friends kona, we gotta remember it’s still a Hyundai
@@dawson.strachan03 ??? look at nissan reliability these days. This is not 90s where nissan was as reliable as toyotas, and hyundai broke every 10k miles. Nissan reliability is on par with FCAs.
@@dawson.strachan03 I agree
@@dawson.strachan03 most people suffer engine failure because they neglect oil changes and basic maintenance
Have been a Hyundai Girl since 2001. Hubby bought me an Elantra next day after he married me. We just sold our 5th Hyundai which was my Veloster. Considering the Kona if not will get another Veloster. Just going to wait for the right price and color. So many Black, Silvers and Whites. Want a brighter color like the Orange Kona!
I became the proud owner of the 2019 Kona Sunset Orange. Still miss my Veloster. But the Kona is quite peppy. I bought the SEL.
Hey hey that’s great! You got just what you wanted with the orange then! Congrats and enjoy! 😁
i'm a new owner of the Kona 1.6T and this vehicule is fast and really nice while we have 6 month winter with -30 degree celcius almost each day. AWD with turbo are the best
Awesome, glad to hear you’re enjoying it!
I would pick the Kona hands down! No CVT garbage for me.
I hear ya! Thanks for the input 👍
I heard honda had issues with cvt too what does that mean?
I bought a 2019 Kona Ultimate in lime & I absolutely love it!
Kicks gets my vote...drives just as well, better equipped, better MPGs; More bang for the Buck all the way round.
Very nice, thanks for the input!
Yea but in NYC that fwd joint ain't worth it KONA. If kicks had awd option then it would win. Being stuck in the snow isnt worth it lol
Kicks looks more pleasant to the eyes overall. Kona is more futuristic looking, but it seems lacking some kind of balance.
I see what you mean. Thanks for the input!
That spec of the Kona is for sure a great choice. That’s how I’d want it.
That’s a bummer, thanks for the input!
As a Juke owner coming into the end of a lease this is good input for me. I'm not happy with it, either.
It's not a redesigned Juke.
The service department at your local dealership has nothing to do with Nissan as a manufacturer.
@@kickthesky I'd recommend taking a look at a Rogue Sport if you'd like to take advantage of incentives available for Nissan loyal customer who lease their vehicles. Especially if you're not happy with the Kicks.
Black heads
If I have a choice I would NEVER pick the one with CVT.
If I have no choice when both are CVT, I would NEVER pick Nissan, because their CVT sucks.
I am getting a 2019 kicks in a few weeks. I am excited
How’d it work out for you?
Great review-thank you! I rode along in a Kona in a test drive with a friend last month and was pretty impressed! She bought the Sonic Silver SEL. Since then I've compared the Kicks, Soul, Compass, Kona and Crosstrek - and I'm leaning towards the Kona!
Tam Sam thank you! Good luck with your decision 😁👍
SandyD I went from a Corolla to a Kona and I love it! I would recommend the SEL trim and up. I got the SE and wish I went up to the SEL. Good luck!
Main reason I'll take a Kona: Center console
Of course! Yeah it definitely drives better. Ever since your ‘19 Santa Fe videos I’ve been excited to test it out. Hopefully soon
One thing, Nissan CVT vs standard 6spd. Also forward collision avoidance will be standard starting in 2019 for the Kona.
www.lemonlawcase.com/problem-vehicles/nissan-cvt-problems/
"Some of the most common issues with the vehicles directly relate to the transmission. Reported issues include loss of power, transmission jerking, transmission slipping, CVT coolant hose leaks and failures, and a CVT error message being displayed. These problems call the Nissan CVT transmission reliability into question and can result in serious harm to unsuspecting drivers."
Nissan has not fixed this issue unless you consider extending the warranty a fix.
NISSAN should have made their 1.6L Turbo (from the Juke) optional in all trim levels or at least the top two!
Kona
@pryncessable same here. It's dependable (so far) transportation.
I love the Kicks styling!
Great review!
Thank you!
I love my kick. Went from Tiguan to Kicks and it's worth all penny. You get more for the money you pay
I bought a Kicks and I love it. I dobt care about the name or flying down the road. To me it really cute and comfy and not cheap looking. I love the design. It does what its supposed to do. Mercedes has one that looks quite similar. My goal car soon. Thanks for the video.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for the input and enjoy your Kicks for now...and Mercedes later 👍
I got my kicks today!! 2019
mark marro
Big mistake
Not worth it
ahmad raiashi how is it so far?
Nolan, Kona all day long!
Thanks for the input!
I don't know if you speak Portuguese mas it seems to 😅😅😅
I think I have to test drive this Kona before deciding on the Kia soul I like the price all the gidgets and gadgets also space is important . Great review .
Thank you! The Soul is definitely worth looking in to! I haven’t been in the Soul to compare though. Good luck with picking one of those!
Plus no awd on Kia soul
Not a fan of either vehicles but Kicks is better in terms of ergonomics. Congrates for the first comparative review. Your reviews are always great!
Thanks Hik! Always great to hear your thoughts!
I bought 2019 hyundai kona white ...I love it and that was my first car
That’s awesome 😁👍
“Was”... so what car do you have now?
I just got my 2019 Nissan kicks SR two days ago!
That’s awesome! Enjoy 😁👍
In love with the Hyundai Kona ❤️🖤
me too
I have the kona surf blue SEL , I’m looking into the kicks for mileage . Although it says it’s better on gas I feel like it isn’t . Nissan is amazing on gas ! I’ve had one before . I feel like that is an important factor .
The Kona trunk floor actually drops down an additional 3" when you take out the storage compartment.
Allison Cook thanks for pointing that out! I go over that in my full review but missed it here!
The kicks is better value with more features and more storage.
Not really. Nissan CVT's are trash.
I agree kicks is better
Kicks with CVT will give up after 50k miles... Hyundai ditched the CVT for best reliable and feel on shifting
After seeing this, glad I got my Kicks (2019). Only new car I've ever had.
I am proud of my Kicks SV owner!
Nice review, 👍thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much!
Kicks design is cleaner & more coherent.
Reliability? No
Purchased a 2019 kicks a few months ago. Love it so far, tires are crap in our VT winter weather so I need to get some winters but other than that, nice and roomy, perfect size, great gas mileage. Reminds me of my 2007 Pontiac vibe which is still going strong at 220 + thousand miles.
That’s great to hear!
hyundai kona coz i owned one. 2020 sel trim awd in pulse red. purchased on june 1, 2020. i love it
The Kona seems like a car I would totally get
Drum brakes, cvt, and non-flat folding rear seats are deal breakers for me.
I don't blame you!
Good to know...thanks! That’s great to hear. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your Kona!
That’s awesome, Jay. Glad to hear your thoughts and j hope you continue to enjoy your Kona! 👍
I like the Hyundai, but man, rattles on a brand new car are not acceptable. Good review 👍
Thank you! I know I was disappointed by that. It felt solid otherwise...maybe it was abused by people that had it before me lol
@@PrimeAutotainment I was abused too before people had me but I don't have any rattles LoL 😂😁
Hilton haha yeah no kidding 😅
Hilton
Well said rattles are the most irritating and spoil all goodies....!!
I've never heard this rattle, or any of my customer complain about a rattle. HMMMM
Nice review. 👍
Thank you!
Kicks is pretty Kick-Ass!
Well said and good points! I was thinking of adding the Qashqai for this. Thanks for the input!
I drove my Kicks through a snowstorm. Didn't get stuck once
I like the nissan kicks better. Thinking of getting one because am looking to get a new car soon.
My green one came with green seatbelts.....I luv green
I have a 2018 KONA. I have the tech version. Love it!!!!
Can anyone provide an update on either? How has the Kona been since you’ve bought it?
My name is Kona!!!!
We choose you
Even though u have lovely name but i had to choose a kicks
❤❤❤ I prefer the kicks
