You know, Wally trained with Norman and was also the one to awaken Rayquaza in the manga. A double battle with him and norman or him helping you to catch Rayquaza could be nice postgame nods to that.
I think that Zinnia as an ORAS nod is already involved in the Rayquaza encounter. There's not a bar on manga-inspired stuff, but from what I remember of the discussion surrounding Flannery's grandpa as a cameo, it's not a source for storyline changes.
idk milotic feels like such a "power" pokemon since its good and is so well known for 2 champion teams in a row. its rare, but more of the "rare strong pokemon" type instead of the "rare collectors pokemon" type like the safari pokemon
Finally, lore accurate Wally. I think the main rival could be used for more utility in the postgame, helping you find rare pokemon, and potentially giving the player some, basically making them a vital part of completing the Pokedex.
I would rather have this. Have them give hints on rare locations of pokemon. He/she shows you one after a Pokedex milestone. Thus unlocking the location/item to catch the rare Pokemon.
For Wally Post game, he should be fought before EVERY Elite 4 rematch, almost like Silver in GSC. In addition, I think the best thing that I have ever seen was the Wally ORAS team after the large win streak in the Battle Maison because they have great abilities, great held items, & a stellar moveset while all being dual type pokemon with no overlapping types. He needs that rematch Elite Four team to be all dual type with no overlaps that posed a damn good challenge
To double down, here's an idea for Wally's post game team: Altaria, Magneton, & Roselia can stay Add in Walrein, Claydol, & Tyranitar The types not used of the 17 are Normal, Bug, Fight, Ghost, & Fire
Silver isn't fought before every E4 rematch. He only challenges you on certain days. By contrast, Wally *can* be fought before every E4 rematch, it's just optional rather than mandatory.
While one more battle is nice, I think what I'd like most with Wally is for us to be given hints that he's actually training and has already been there. Something like when you defeat a random trainer saying "Oh you're as strong as that guy with the Gardevoir." Or your father having dialogue after you defeat him saying "Looks like you're in the running to become a champion just like Wally." And so keeping with Gamefreak's intentions in their design.
Interestingly enough, this does remind of what they did with another gen 3 NPC. The Winstrate family will mention that the older brother is out training to become champion and is far stronger than all of them, and you then fight him (cooltrainer vito) in victory road.
For the main rival, instead of a post game rematch, I think it would be cool to have them offer trades to the player. They could give rare Pokémon or Pokémon with egg moves to show how they’re studying Pokémon. It might also be interesting to make them a low ranked trainer in contests to show how they’re exploring their passions but contests don’t really click with them either.

I don't know if this is even doable, but since the main rival wants to become a professor, I like the idea of giving them a helper role as a replayable, once a day battle. They will ask you what kind of Pokemon you want to battle against and have a full team of six of whatever type you select, so it's like they get to show off their impressive collection and you get to practice against a certain type. Maybe you get a little treat treat after beating every type. Maybe not. At the very least, this actually makes them a major grass type trainer if you select grass.
I really like this idea. I was gonna suggest that the May/Brendan fight could also include Pokémon from other regions, to show off how they’ve gone out to find rare Pokémon from places outside the Hoenn region, giving the player a sense of how far they’re willing to go to find new Pokémon. It would also have the added benefit of helping the player see more Pokémon. Alternatively, the rival could also help the player find some of the Pokémon they might have missed before beating the elite 4? Idk how they’d implement that as a feature, though… 🤔
I like the idea of being able to practice against a type, but I think having a team entirely of one type would be too easy of a battle for that point in the game, and I also think it goes against the entire idea of a rival. Obviously gym leaders and E4 members have type themes, but the most difficult fights usually don’t (the Champion). Someone who is your rival should realistically be using their best team possible in every fight against you, not handicapping themselves. Otherwise they’re not a rival, they’re just another trainer. I know the word ‘rival’ has become almost a meme in Pokémon games because of how friendly they always are to the protagonist, and how they usually work in tandem with the protagonist in the main storyline (literally not a rival by the definition of the word, rivals don’t work _together_ towards a goal), but I really think they should be actual rivals. That doesn’t mean they need to be rude, they can still be friendly, but they should really be trying to beat you at all costs, at all times. Otherwise, don’t call them a rival. Your idea is still good, I just don’t think it should be the rival offering those types of matches.
@@artistfloor9 Right! Like I feel like their personality is kind of "I like battling, but I don't want to do it competitively." I think something like this is perfect post-game content because it's all about showing off game content and doesn't really change anything fundamentally.
I am surprised you skipped the fact that Azumarill is a Pokémon that is already *kinda* associated to Wally, most specifically his cracked rematch team from the ORAS Battle Maison. I dunno if that was intentional or not
2 things: 1) Don't forget that if you manage to avoid the fight in Rustboro City, they will approach you when heading into Mr. Briney's house, so that interaction will most likely need address as well. 2) I think Wally should have a pseudo-legend in a post game fight, and the other rival (May or Brendan) should have a Shedinja, because it's never seen in the main story and is an incredibly rare Pokémon to show off. Have them battle you in the post game area.
I know Steven is the normal superboss in Emerald, but maybe you could bring Wally in for a similar situation. Perhaps have him visiting his parents and he can optionally be fought there like Cynthia in Black and White. Another idea is to have him replace Wallace as Champion in Elite Four rematches while Wallace is fought as a superboss himself in the Cave of Origin.
Wallace was downgraded to 8th gym like in RS for Emerald Legacy and Steven is the champion, so having Wally as the superboss would actually be perfect!
Put him in the lobby of the elite four. Make him battleable every time you beat the champion, and give him dialog along the lines of "I heard you beat the champion! If I can win against you here maybe I can go against the elite four!" Idk gives him something to get stronger for, and actually acknowledges that you've beat the champion
For May/Brendan's post game fight, you could mirror the post game fight they did in ORAS, so if you meet them on the top of Rt 103 where you met, you could have a final hurrah with their strongest team. As for Wally, I think having him go to the Battle Frontier would be sick. Also in ORAS, but I think he should show up here and battle you, and then maybe you can find him later in Petalburg at his family's house where he can challenge you to a final fight
Indeed think It’d be cool if Wally were to meets you on the ship ride to Battle frontier an you battle him either on the boat, Or once u depart in the battle frontier somewhere.. after you unlock the johto starters he’s there at the lab getting starter himself maybe either the unclaimed starter for instance if u picked cyndaquil he picks chickorita while May gets totodile.. when the elite four level up for the rematch you battle him again before you battle them except when you meet battle him he has a fully evolved starter himself this time. You’ll meet May in the Altering Cave with a Venusaur or blastoise maybe a Snorlax etc maybe either she or Wally shows up in the trainer hill with the remaining lati twin you don’t choose.
This video was a little strange. I could have sworn that during the game the player more or less bullied May/Brenden out of becoming a trainer and making them only focus on bein a professor. Am I bugging or am I remembering another pokemon game?
Speaking on the subject of rivals, can you please rejuvenate Vito Winstrate? He is touted by his family as being the strongest, and you defeat his family in one of the most memorable events in the game. To put this in context, there are some people to this day who believe that the Winstrate family is Steven’s family. That is how epic that event is perceived. At the very least, he can be made to stand out more in addition to having a strong rival-level team with additional lines of dialogue. In the postgame, it would also make sense for him to return home, where you challenge him along with the family. After defeating him in this event, seeing that you became champion should serve as motivation, which would lead to him being a wandering rival-type of trainer in the Post Game. (where’s Vito?)
My only real suggestion for Wally’s Post Game Team is replace his Delcatty with Exploud. Aside from Gabby and Ty, Whismur doesn’t appear on any significant Trainer Teams. Plus, it’s found in Rusturf Tunnel, right by where Wally stayed with his Aunt and Uncle.
@@nesradub360As good as Zangoose is, I feel Exploud works better due to the similar vibe Wally’s story gets from the Whismur line, starting off kind of weak and quiet before evolving into something stronger.
Post Game Wally. While you’re running around if doing all your post game shenanigans, Wally decided he’s learned everything he can in Hoenn and decides to go travelling to a different region. Near the end of the post game you meet up with Wally who’s just returning from Kalos. He challenges you to a battle and you’re surprised when his Gardevoir Mega evolves! This is how mega stones are introduced to the Hoenn region in ORAS. I know, never going to happen, and outside of the scope of the game but it’s a neat idea that could catch you off guard and ties into the future games well.
For Post Game Wally, I do think leaning into making him very competitive like they did in ORAS would be cool. His ORAS team was Roserade, Talonflame, Azumarill, Magnezone, Garchomp and Gallade, which Talonflame and Garchomp were serious competitive threats in Gen 6. For Legacy obviously the Gen 4 evolutions won’t work, but maybe adding some Gen 3 competitive staples like adding Tyranitar, Aerodactyl, Gengar, Snorlax or Herracross to really show how serious of a battler Wally has become.
For me, Wally in RSE was always insanely forgetable, and I only gained respect for him in ORAS. This was in large part thanks to his encounter in Victory Road being treated as a larger event, with his own room and theme music which also played during his battle. So if I could provide any suggestion, it would be to give him his own theme music based on his theme from ORAS, but I understand if that's far beyond the scope of this romhack. Other than that, a small thing that ORAS did to foreshadow Wally was to put his name on the Gym statues in each gym in the Certified Trainers section, showing that he has beaten them before you. I feel like this would be a neat addition, as I doubt many people would even notice that but it would be a nice surprise for those who do.
It's crazy how goated Gary/Blue was as a rival. First try and they nailed it. I feel like it makes future rivals feel lesser. I don't think we would mind Brendan/May being weaker rivals if we didn't have such a good example already.
Fighting blue as champion for the very first time was definitely something. I expected elite 4/ champion. I was down to my final Pokémon, no items, no revives. Nothing. So when I was told there was one more, and that it was HIM of all people, I knew it was over. “That means I’m the strongest trainer in the world”.
@@TheKabuto90 I think it’s not the character they nailed, but what the rival archetype represents. Blue functions as a test of skills (him being someone with just as much experience as you). While the character is bland, it gives off the feeling of being in a rivalry.
@@TheKabuto90That is the whole point, Blue is a cocky asshole who thought he was so great and can do anything himself. He was build to be disliked so much so the final fight as the new champion with him losing to you have such a big impact on both him and yourself. That huge defeat is what at the end changed Blue into a better person. True he is still cocky at times, but he isn’t much of a bully. Both Blue and Silver didn’t have any love and trust for their Pokémon which caused them to lose in the biggest match for them.
Giving Wallys Gardevoir Double Team just seems evil x) I’d rather see it have Shadow Ball since you made ghost special now so it covers a bit more. I think giving Brendan/May a team that rotates members in and out, just to show off their new unique captures would be very fun, f.e. let them have a Feebas pre Lilycove that turns into a Wailord, or a Slugma at the optional Rustboro fight that’s a Torquoal at 118 or something.
I love the fact that you actually gave Wally a full team of six! So many important battles in pokemon are ruined by the fact that while you have a full team the other trainers only use 4 or 5 mons. Also I'm curious about the picks for the Elite four since Hoenn dex is really lacking in their types.
@@machinat3636 I think Ninetails would work Better because it would cover more types and is a general far Better mon than Chimecho (being a psychic type doesn't help at all). You can also find Vulpix at MT. Pyre so It makes also sense if we talk about Phobe's lore.
@@lunicouomopiccione1501 yeah I agree.. with you but it’d need its moves adjusted slightly give it access to ghost/psychic type moves maybe..I’d like it with Spite Confuse Ray Extrasensory Flamethrower…access to calm mind psych up solar beam, hypnosis dream eater would be cool.
@@JayClearman411 a really viable set could be Fire Blast for heavy stab damage, Hypnosis/ Will O'Wisp, Hidden Power Grass at 70 Power, Extrasensory because there aren't other aviable offensive options in gen 3. The Item should be Charcoal because of Fire Blast (gen 3 really lacks in items) de and the Ev Investment should be 252 SpA, 252 Spe and 4 in Hp.
For post game Wally, i like the idea of running into him in the battle frontier to further expand his growth as a passionate trainer for battling. This also gives Mr. Scott a purpose in the story as he acknowledges Wally (back from the mauville scene) that hes a fully fledged trainer and recruits him to his home of battle facilities. Also fitting since ORAS did something similar for post game Wally.
After entering the Hall of Fame, Brendan/May could wait for you outside of your house and they'll ask for you to meet them at Route 103 for one more match where their team will be even stronger than the last time. This shares a reference to their final battle after the credits of ORAS. For Wally, he'll join you alongside when you visit the Battle Frontier and at some point, you'll be given the option to battle him again and he'll have strong Pokemon from the National Pokedex. This also references ORAS as well where he also used Pokemon from the National Pokedex from those games.
Very cool if Wally were to meets you on the ship ride to Battle frontier you battle him either on the boat, An once an them again in the battle frontier somewhere.. or after you unlock the johto starters he’s there at the lab getting starter himself maybe either the unclaimed starter for instance if u picked cyndaquil he picks chick or it’s while may gets totodile.. when the elite four level up you battle him again before you battle them except when you meet battle him the last time he has a fully evolved starter himself this time.
It's be cool if the "Main Rival" can be fought in a full 6v6 post game rematch, but only if you complete the Hoenn dex. Like only if you manage to beat them at their true goal, they actually be willing to go back into the ring.
For May/Brendan's post game, something to keep in mind is that if the two of them are serious about completing their pokedex, they need to get all 8 badges, as there are 8 HMs that they'll need badges to unlock the use of. If you were to have a post-game encounter which involves running into them when they're out doing fieldwork, you could include some of those HM moves on their team, to show that they were out there doing work, not out there with a competitive team (while still balancing it to make it difficult enough to be a satisfying post-game encounter)
I don't really feel like the 8 hms and their badge requirements really exist in-universe the same way they do for us as a gameplay mechanic. We see the rival fly away after the battle outside the department store, but no version of the rival team's swellow knows fly, just as an example.
@@Galeus708 I like this idea.. I’d say maybe we can have you encounter them out in about while exploring the region via Secret Bases…or houses… maybe smith can have some of the homes in game repurposed to house notable ppl for instance have one of the blocked homes in sootopolis be Wallace’s house. Have one of the house in mauviille belong to Watson I’d say the house across the bike place that’s sort of blocked off right next to the house to get rock smash from …maybe Winona’s secret base could be above the waterfall by the weather institute ..maybe Wally could be somewhere in or around the verdenturf tunnel.
Badges and HMs blocking progression is a game-mechanic, not an in-universe one. That is to say, everyone can visit other towns/cities at any point with or without completing the gym challenge.
I think having Wally hidden away somewhere in the battle frontier for a huge fight would be awesome. After the fight they could have a small chance to show up as an opponent in the various battle frontier games where it makes sense. Could even increase their likelihood of showing up after achieving the silver/gold symbol as a way to show their drive as a trainer also increasing with yours.
"There's not much difference between the two rivals" Not true. If you play as May, Brendon makes comments about how he thought you'd be a guy just cause you're a gym leader's kid. He also has other dialogue later that suggests he looked down on you for being a girl, but no longer feels this way
Definitely could use some more dialogue to set them apart for sure! Give them some more personality too. Like maybe May’s a tomboy while Brendan likes cute things
@@marinagaleotti If you pay attention to the male rival's dialogue.....he is kind of a jerk to the female protagonist. After you beat flannery, he will say something like "well, I'm off the challenge your dad. *Unlike you* he's actually strong." You really don't see a lotta people play the girl protagonist outside of speed runners who don't pay attention to dialogue anyway, so that kinda had my jaw drop a bit at how scathing the male rival's can be.
A post game Wally with Jirachi would be awesome and it gives you huge flexibility on the moveset. If I could wish for a perfect post game, it would include some kind of restriction on your team (monotypes, baby team, gen restriction...) in a Tower Battle.
@@mingacio1996 great idea. Jirachi definitely suits him. I can totally see it. Maybe you can RematcH Wally with it after you get a Symbol from the battle frontier or he shows up with it in tow at the top of the trainer Hill..
Postgame: Wally- Have him be an optional fight at the battle frontier, with his final team being fully IV + EV'd out, with competitive movsets. He would finally be of what he dreamed of being, possibly after you have all gold medals he would appear, similarly to ORAS. May/Brenden- I liked what they did with ORAS, them having a final fight where they had their first ever fight, route 103. Or Possibly, again in ORAS they had a little 'date' where they could create that and have a battle there. The rival could use pokemon that aren't in the hoenn pokedex. Along with a Johto starter that is strong against their own starter. I
Wally leveling up like 3 levels and challenging you right after leaving the victory road cave would be awesome and super menacing, like “no way we made it at the same time one more battle before we challenge the league” and then completely unexpected battle where he has a chance to absolutely wipe you.
For the post game, May/Brendan should have extremely rare Pokemon: a sudowoodo since there's one in the Battle Frontier, Milotic, Relicanth, a high level wynaut (holding liechi Berry) from Mirage Island, and a medicham since they're unavailable in normal emerald Wally can have the same team, but with competitive movesets / EVs. It'd keep his love for his original pokemon in tact while showing he's taking training his pokemon seriously, as it'd imply he actually farmed berries to reset their EVs, EV trained, and got the TMs or visited move tutors for their movesets
I like this idea! I don’t agree with her specifically using milotic.. as an example. Normally I’d be fine suggesting her team may have Hoenn Pokémon that Emerald Specifically cuts out of the game roster Like Surskit/Masquerain Meditie/Medicham Roselia Zangoose Lunatone.. but since they can be found in game idk if I see the merit in suggesting that. I’m open to ideas I would like that outside fortree city when u battle her she has a feebas & kecleon! In front of the dept. store Mays got a chimecko since it’s like a 2% shot of catching one on mount pyre. Later on Or ..she could either have Latios/latias or a shiny Or we could stick her a uncommon Pokémon mawhile Nosepass wigglytuff slakoth snorunt ..if Smith didn’t mess with the encounter rates I’d have said Surskit. Maybe we battle her outside the Safari Zone once it’s been Expanded She could have a snubbull gligar… The rarest has got to be a level 5 Gyarados. Technically levels 6-19 are just as rare, but 5 is the lowest level you can legally obtain a Gyarados If you go to Sootopolis and use the Super Rod, there is a 20% chance to find a Gyarados. They can appear at any level from 5 to 45.. the lowest one I’ve ever caught was LV8, 10, 12… an I’ve had the game for a super long time. Or we stick with the original team but have her have all 6 Swellow Camerupt Macargo Wailord Breloom STARTER but have her pop up like Ty & Gabby all over the Region with her pkmn getting higher every few battles..an some getting swapped out depending on location. Torkoal Ludicolo Pelipper Tropius Macargo STARTER
@@Xeno_Solarus it is rare but it just doesn’t suit may imo..it’s more Juan’s style..beside it’s uniquely Wallace’s the CHAMPIONs Ace.. I feel like that would sort of undercutting him or be stealing his thunder imo. Besides Speaking of the battle frontier why not give her Smeargle instead.. Besides you can say the same thing about Castform or Metagross Which would go against what legacy is trying to do imo. But it’s your idea I get it.
I love seeing Wally get more screen time. Even though Wally has a smaller role as a rival, he doesn't get as much love as he deserves. I have always found myself getting attached to him. He's was my favorite character, and I was always disappointed he didn't get more of a spotlight. I was a lot like him as a kid, being sick growing up, and also very shy, so I always connected to him as a character on a deeper level. He gave me hope that I could push through my own ailments. I read the manga a lot growing up too, and the one thing that always bugged me is that, in the games, they talk about him being sick and frail, but they don't really do much with it to let you experience it first hand, unlike in the manga, where he wears a respiratory mask, even passing out in Petalburg Woods, when catching his first Pokémon, Kecleon, not Ralts. Ruby trades him his Ralts. I don't know how you're going to deal with Mirage Island, but that would be super interesting as a post game battle for him, maybe experimenting with some of his manga mons to mix things up from his battle in Victory Road. It's an area that didn't get much love in the original game, and is a fairly big part of his plot in the manga. It's my head canon that the old man he searched with in the novels is the same one who tells you if the island has appeared, so maybe that could be his post game goal, searching for the illusive area. It seems like something he would do, helping an old man achieve his own adventure. It was always a grind to find the perfect Ralts for me at the beginning of my playthroughs, because I loved it that much, and I was always jealous how he found one so quickly, whereas I'd be looking through that grass forever to find one that perfect specimen. I think it showed how he was special and always managed to defeat the odds against him despite his setbacks. Having a battle with him at Mirage Island and him trading with you or giving you an egg that he got from his Gardevoir as a gift for helping motivate him on his journey, it would be a nice easter egg (lol) to another one of his stories, sending it full circle. It was talked about the original universe in ORAS, so I don't think it's too crazy to let the manga influence the game with its own little twist. It would give more to do post game and use an area that seemed oddly void of content for something that was so rare to see. I always thought it was cool in the post game of X and Y how Shauna traded you a Pokémon she breeded from her starter. It's unique in a completely different way than trading with another person or a random NPC. She was my favorite character in those games too, and having a Pokémon with their OT makes them more special than any Pokémon I could get from anyone else. With someone I went through my journey with. I love what you've been doing man. Being able to complete my Pokedex in Yellow and Crystal Legacy has been so fun, and I've never gotten the opportunity to do so being a child that didn’t connect well with other kids growing up. It's really been an experience, and you always go the extra mile, fleshing out characters in a way that, unfortunately, they missed the chance to receive before. It's been great going through these games with both nostalgia and now new moments to remember :)
For the main rival, I would add the final battle from OR/AS. So, as Champion, you could challenge the rival once more on Route 103 with a final team (possibly with the three versions featuring a Spinda with a different pattern). For Wally, I would suggest a battle either in the Battle Frontier (Maybe as a final entry Battle) or before the rematches with the Elite Four. I would also love a double battle with both rivals.
For the rival post game fights, I have never played post game emerald so I don’t want to stray from your vision of an authentic Emerald experience. I wanted to say I’ve been watching your content since I was in middle school, the summer your Top 5 zombies content blew up and I remember listening to the SmithSquadPodcast and it’s so amazing to see how your contents changed over the years. Thank you for the hard work king I appreciate it. That BAR with a Bi-pod is worth it everytime!
Post game, I would think it’s great if you and Wally are the ones involved in the Latios/Latias event where you spot and find one and Wally finds the other. And later you could have an optional double battle with You/Wally vs Steven/Wallace.
a cool idea for the rival during post game is having them be more involved in helping you learn how to access the Regi Trio. Like after you've become champion May/Brendan can give some dialogue talking about weird events going on in Hoenn and they actually assist you in telling on what pokemon is needed like Relicanth and Wailord to open the caves because of their knowledge wanting to be professors and them collecting rare pokemons. At least that way there is an in-game reason of learning the poke braille and figuring out what is needed to open each Regi cave
it would be cool to give the main rival post game fight a latios or latias depending on their gender. It would fit the storyline of catching rare pokemons and making the fight fun by adding a great pokemon we don't see often. PS : loving the legacy series man !
Actually i think it’s a good idea and the rival can explain that’s he and steven save this lati from team aqua/magma and the lati join the rival team after rescue him. It’s like the gifted lati from ORAS but again SmithPlay in denial about ORAS.
I don't think another fight against Brendon/May in the postgame would be fitting their character arc. Maybe they could reward the player with rare items and Eggs of rare Pokémon for helping them with their research. For Example, Task 1:" I want to conduct research on Milotic, can you show me one please?" Task 2: Can you show me a smeargle with move "X" You get the idea. I think that has a lot of potential :)
For Wally's post-game fight, it would be pretty awesome if he winds up befriending Latios/Latias (whichever one the player doesn't select as the roamer legendary) to have on their final team. I think that would highlight a real peak in his character arc, as he would not only have that competitive growth present in having a potent legendary 'mon but also show that he became capable of earning the trust and companionship of a legendary due to the maturation of his strength and kindness of character.
@@virgilmacmanus7568 I co-sign this idea 💯 I’d also like for him to challenge you with it on his team when you go to rematch the elite four..also like him popping up an making a appearance in battle tower doubles or multi battles with his gardevoir altaria etc..maybe he can have a secret base you see him in after you get a frontier symbol.
Cool changes, I really think the arc for the main rival is brilliant and was always put out like you guys created it now. For postgame I‘d love to have something like in GSC where you could challenge your rival (that would be Wally then) before the E4 (maybe even only on certain days) or have him become the head of the battle tower. I’d love for him to find his competitive side and become the best competitive enemy you can find, thus battle tower head. Cheers and congrats on these amazing projects
May/Brendan post-game could include a Gold/Silver-like catching contest in the safari zone to underline their compassion for/expertise in researching new pokémon (aaand after E4 there would be new pokémon in the safari zone i guess?). I always considered Wally as more of a friendly rival (see the catching tutorial as opposed to GSC rival being introduced as a thief), so i feel like his post-game should include some kind of co-op-mission including double battles. story-wise i guess i'd be fine with both something fun but challenging like "you have to win 5 battles in a row against the winstrate family" or something more serious (but also challenging^^) like some kind of return of Shelly and Tabitha trying to revive the two teams (this second option would require a lot more effort obviously but i feel like it could be enjoyable to 3rd gen fans to simply have more than 8hrs of storyline). (anyway thanks for your effort, i'm enjoying the videos and looking forward to the results...)
I think both rivals should have post game fights. Main Rival should have a new exotic team of rare Pokemon, ones that can only be ontained post game. They should all be fully evolved and strong enough to pose a challendge even if not difficult compared to Battle Frontier. Wally should return with a literal crack team to test the player. He should talk about how he is taking on the Battle Frontier and has learned a lot of new strategies. Maybe change his team up only slightly to give him ace Pokemon that mirror the main battles your to expext from the Battle Frontier or past gym leaders.
One thing you could do is instead of battling Wally in Mauville City, you could have run into him being picked on by two Aqua/Magma grunts and it force you into a double battle with him. This would help reinforce that double battling is the new thing for this generation. You could then later have him bump into the trainer and he could have dialogue that you helping him in that double battle have him the confidence to double battle Tate and Liz. This would give the player a sense of mentorship and let them feel like their actions in the story affect other characters. This would also give you a sense of accomplishment when you encounter him in Victory Road, knowing you led to him being successful.
Call it a stretch, but having the Main Rival fight you again at the same spot you first fought at in ORAS, with a number 6 being something like Deoxys or one of the Lati Twins to show their dedication/obsession with catching Rare Pokemon would help accentuate the theme of having the Spoink/Klecleon. I think it would unfortunately have to replace their Grumpig, and maybe add an Absol for flair as well, but I think it would be a fun way to test the players skill, while also maybe, gifting you Deoxys after they get it in their Pokedex as a way to acknowledge you and support you as you continue fighting challenges like at the Battle Frontier and the E4 Rematches.
Another option for may and Brendan is to have them be found randomly in a different route each day. A noticed a lot of the base games are specifically good for filling the pokedex. Breloom can have false swipe and spore as a catcher. Pelipper has fly and surf as an hm slave. Magcargo has flame body for hatching eggs faster. What if the team's moveset changes to reflect that post game? They'd have those 3, the starter, the 5th member cycles through the updated members of their team (grumpig, kecleon, donphan, pinsir, and heracross), and then the final member could be different in each route to show off how they're being trained to evolve, or show off a new national dex pokemon for every location the rival is found in, to reflect the collecting part? That way, they feel like they're traveling the world, looking for new pokemon. The pokemon look like its being changed to focus on collecting and not just battling. The gimmick isn't to have a challenging fight, but to see if you can find them each day, like hide and seek, and see which new pokemon is on their team this time. And it makes sense lore wise than to have someone who doesn't want to battle having a champion level team. They can have that kanto gym leader feel in gen 2, where they're strong enough but still weaker than the champion
For Wally, I think introducing the Azumarill line earlier would make a lot of sense. Much like Raltz, it’s a line that starts off really weak, but becomes competitive by the end, much like Wally. You could introduce each new stage in his three fights.
Honestly, I think Brendan/May should upgrade your Pokedex either after Sootopolis or in the postgame. It would also solidify their role as becoming a Pokémon professor.
a small idea i had for the main rival would be if they called you on your pokegear to let you know about mass outbreaks. normally you get mass outbreaks randomly after battles, and they only become active once you watch tv, which feels super random. i think this would be a really fitting post-game feature that doesn't involve battling. it would be even better if the list of pokemon you can get from mass outbreaks was expanded. maybe the rival could even give you a held item or something if you caught a certain rare/outbreak pokemon and showed it to them. that would make sense from a story perspective too, since a retired trainer would probably have a lot of held items that they don't need anymore
Just based on your ideas, a main rival post game fight with just a bunch of rare high level Pokemon would be great, not really as a challenge, but maybe to show where some of these Pokemon can be caught. Underrated feature of Pokemon by the way, I remember seeing cool pokemon on enemy teams, and then immediately looking at my Pokedex to see where I could catch them.
I LOVE IT! Giving the main rival weird/rare pokemon is such a cool idea, it's awsome the way you have chosen to show the character development rather than telling. As for post game like with Oras changing his team to include some Gen 3 OU pokemon with competitive sets makes sense, maybe Flygon For Alteria and possibly Starmie for Azumaril, both solid Pokemon with no real associations to another trainer in the region.
Post-game rival fight Ideas: Brendan/May: Even though they've given up on being the greatest battler, they agree to take you up on one last battle for "old times sake". They've clearly spent their time hunting down even more obscure and rare pokemon, and their team will be rounded out by something that truly shows their dedication to this goal: A Jirachi. Serene Grace with a moveset that takes advantage of this rare ability. Thinking things like Fire Punch, Thunderbolt, Body Slam, Wish, so on. The battle ends and your rival is content, because even though they still can't compare with you as a trainer, they've managed to do something spectacular in their own right (befriending and capturing a mythical pokemon). Wally: Not discouraged or off-put by his loss to you, Wally continued battling, and over time has grown healthier than the feeble young boy we met at the beginning of our journey. Wally's story comes full circle as he takes on an apprenticeship with Norman, where Wally will be next in line to take the mantle of Petalburg Gym Leader once Norman decides to retire. Eager to show that he is every bit up to the task of being one of the pillars of the Hoenn Pokemon league, he battles you once more. I don't think there is much room to change Wally's actual team roster, as him bonding with his Pokemon and having them be a part of his own "coming of age" story as he grows healthier and learns what his own dreams are is too important to his arc to replace any of them. Instead I'd choose to just crank the difficulty up on him as much as reasonably possible. Wally should be the "gen 2 Red" fight of the romhack, the final capstone battle to your entire post-game adventure. Full sets of expertly crafted movesets and items, and levels that sit at the peak of whatever the game's level curve ends up being. Make it a punishing but fair fight, worthy of a proper send-off for the true rival of Emerald.
Well done as always! I would personally like too see the 2 different rival arcs emphasize their goal in pokemon world; 1. Rival would have changing diverse teams which shows their dedication to fill their Pokedex. Movesets would not be optimized, but the team would showcase different/rare pokemon depending on the area the fight is in, with the starter pokemon being the anchor of the team. Fights would be more difficult than regural trainers, but not as hard as Gym leaders as it is not their goal. 2. Rival would build up their team piece by piece, and the arc would showcase their development as trainer, where there is not that much changes in pokemon lines, but evolving the pokemon they have and optimizing their movesets and team composition for fighting
While the placement of the ad was weird, I can vouch that Flexispot are actually REALLY good desks. We have two in our household and we couldn't be happier with them.
Rematches with both rivals post game please! itd be really cool to see what team Main Rival settles into having around as a working professor, plus it would then give Wally a chance to reach his greatest heights, could give him a red-esque fight ala gen2
In terms of post game, having the main rival have a changing team aside from their starter would be cool. They’ve already admitted they aren’t cut out to be a top tier battler, so having them use different teams to see how they work together would be fun research for them. Being able to find them randomly in the world or in buildings would be a nice touch since they are trying to collect more. They could even have Pokemon from previous regions to help fill out the players pokedex. As for Wally, it would be cool to have him challenge you at the elite four outside the main building instead of the cave and have him mention that he beat them sometime after the player did.
With the Rival focusing on catching Rare Pokemon, what about Mirage Island and making it a guaranteed post-game event, if anything, for flavor? It could also potentially tie in Latios and Latias, who are starting to roam the map from that location. For Wally with the inclusion of the Battle Frontier, allowing him to randomly be an opponet. Once you have fought him once I believe shaping up a hardcore team with competitive movesets and iteams would only help show his growth as a trainer.
Possible rival duo battle? Main game rival gets to have the Pokémon you would now really associate with them, like Grumpig and maybe their safari encounter as well as their starter. Wally could have Gardevoir, altaria and Azumarill. Or maybe they could each gain some more surprise members. It would work in the main rivals favour as that would show off how they caught a wide variety of Pokémon.
For three post game, maybe you could make the main rival’s role be to help the player catch rare Pokemon. The idea behind this is that is the main rival chooses to focus more time on the finding rare Pokemon, then by the post game they could be an expert who helps the player. There are two ways I think this could work The first way would be to have rare Pokemon spawn at different routes every day, and the main rival could let the player know which routes they can find rare Pokemon each day. This would function kind of like the weather institute telling the player where they can find Groudon and Kyogre The second way would be to make them related to altering cave in some way. The original purpose for altering cave was for the player to be able to find rare Pokemon, but that was a scrapped idea. Maybe the main rival could have some direct influence in what Pokemon the player can find in altering cave
Post-game double battle with Wally to truly utilize the more odd/competitive useful moves that you don't see in the main story. Double battles in VGC require so much planning and understanding of the environment that implementing it in the rival story would be a alternative way of showcasing his underrated strategical capability.
I'm really enjoying seeing the progress as this comes along! Having the main rival get a few rarer pokemon is a great idea, and helps their story make a little more sense. It would be interesting to see some sort of little story with them trying to find some specific pokemon in the post game, like Jirachi maybe. It would be awesome to see more of Wally as he grows as a trainer too, even if it's just him showing up a few more times for a scene or something.
Giving May/ Brendon some dialogue after beating e4 to point you in the right direction for the Regis would be an awesome way to show how impressive their rare Pokémon knowledge has gotten
Im picturing 2 At-Home (or at research locations) features for the Main Gendered Rival 1) Talk to them and they'll show you uncommon and rare Pokedex entries, like how Bill could in Gen1, this allowing you to know where to catch them 2) Rival shows you an Entry for an Roaming pokemon, and also unlocks being able to catch it. Granted, I don't know which pokemon to roam (probably not Lati•s)
Post-game Wally idea: Gym Leader Norman's final rematch team is a multi-battle. You team up with May/Brendan and fight Norman + Wally. Wally's Gardevoir knows Skill Swap. I think it makes sense because Wally is *from* Petalburg and now that he's back home, he wants to work for the Gym. He looks up to Norman as a mentor figure who helped him catch his first pokemon.
I've never played Emerald, only Sapphire and Alpha Sapphire, so I am unaware of the full changes/differences between Emerald and R/S, but this project is really cool! I've been playing through Crystal Legacy and have thoroughly enjoyed it thus far. Looking forward to this one! Having a callback, like others have said, to ORAS with the Brendan/May battle on Route 103 would be cool! For Wally, it'd be neat if you find him at his aunt/uncle's house or the Battle Frontier for periodic, repeatable battles to show he is continuing to train and grow his team.
I always liked how the main character rival used a Numel, Wailmer, and Shroomish on their team in Ruby and Sapphire. Especially Numel, not so much Wailmer, but they were tied to team Magma and Aqua so heavily that you start to have an evil association with those Pokemon but then your rival uses them and they just seem like lovable dopey guys. I really like Swellow on their team also, but I wish they had a Taillow on their team earlier. As far as post game fights you can recreate the ORAS after credit fight, but that’s hard to create the right mood for a fight like that with no day or night cycle. Maybe instead of having roaming legendaries for Latias and Latios you have an event where Brandon or May works with you to track down the legendaries and catch them. Maybe instead of helping you they take it as a competition to see who can catch it first, and after you catch it they want to battle you to get Latias or Latios data in their Pokédex. There’s too much association to the player characters and the Lati twins that you should definitely include the player rival in some way.
A post game battle for Wally where he has caught the other roaming legendary and obtained one other rare and interesting Pokemon that he would have had to have traded from a Kanto/Johto trainer (like Porygon2, Snorlax or Scizor for example) on a fully competitive and dangerous team to show his dedication both to finding rare and interesting Pokemon but also training a powerful team
This is so satisfying to see! Love the innovations. In the postgame, I'd love to see a team-up with Wally against an upgraded Archie & Maxie, who are still chasing after postgame Kyogre & Groudon. Maybe May/Brendan completes their Pokédex and takes their choice of a Johto starter!
I think programming might be too much for it but it would be cool to see Brendan in master ranked contests to tie in with the manga series. Or have the rival and Wally (or even the evil team leaders, gym leaders, your mom) appear in the battle frontier at random points. Kind of show what they’ve been doing on your travels
For the main rival since they’re interested in befriending Pokemon, what if for the post game, for each rebattle they have different teams with mons that are rare to find from Kanto Johto and depending on the starter chosen by the player
These changes are great, can’t wait to play this. Some suggestions: - The pre-League Wally battle should take place outside the entrance of Victory Road, by the flowers - Would be dope if GBA-style versions of Wally’s encounter/battle themes from ORAS were implemented in EL - Wally should definitely be a post-game superboss in the Battle Frontier with a more competitive team. Gardevoir can stay, maybe add the unused starter as part of a Grass/Fire/Water core and some strong post-game Safari Zone Pokémon like Ampharos, Ursaring and Houndoom. - I know it goes against the ethos of the main rival’s new storyline, but I think it would be cute to have a final post-game battle with them at the same spot you first battled in Route 103. Just add another Pokémon for a full team of six
After the Main Rival's Lilycove or Sootopolis encounter, one function they can have is giving daily tips on rare Pokemon you can find in specific areas, like "Even with the Weather Institute, the old folks in Fortree City say they count on seeing a grim-looking Pokemon in Route 121 to warn them about incoming storms." Or "I heard from Mr. Stone that he got his tough-looking ace from exploring deep in Granite Cave!"
If possible, for a rival battle in the post game, is to give the Main Rival an ever-changing 6th pokemon, for example, when you battle it first, it's, idk, a Gyarados, when you battle it again, it's a Tyranittar, things like that, to show they are capturing new pokemons and trying new things with their 6th slot.
For main rival post game, I would love to see them in a Red-like fight in some ruins. I know this happens with Steven, but with some nice text they may as well claim that "the journey to fill up the Pokedex ended up improving the team much more", and they could show a real powerhouse. It would be amazing!
For post-game May/Brendan, since their arc concludes with them deciding their passion is to become a Pokemon professor, I think it would be cool if they help you find a Legendary/Mythical. Hoenn has some great options for Legendaries/Mythicals you could encounter at the end of a post-game quest-line, such as Jirachi, Deoxys, Latios/Latias, etc. And if we want a battle with May/Brendan, we could fight them prior to encountering the rare Pokémon as sort of a test to see who should get the chance to get the rare Pokémon As for Wally in the post-game, I like other commenters’ suggestion of having him be a cracked trainer with a full competitively-viable team in the Battle Frontier
Wally being at the battle frontier with a post game fight would show his ambition to go beyond just becoming a champion. I think that'd be really cool. I also agree with another commenter I saw that said Main Rival should have a milotic to show emphasis on rarity of Pokemon. Maybe a wobbufett she caught as a wynaut on mirage island?
I'd honestly love to see Wally at the Battle Frontier, possibly hanging around outside Scott's place, then upon seeing you he'd remark on how he came here to learn more battle strategies to become even stronger, hopefully one day being able to defeat you.
Suggestion: the main rival could be found in locations with rare pokemon after the final battle, maybe even with some side-battles using entirely the pokémon of that area + grumpig and starter
Main Rival: Gains a starter of the type their 5-mon team lacks in the last fight. From whichever previous generation is harder for the player to get, or even impossible to get. As part of their pursuit of becoming a pokemon professor they've become pen pals with a previous generation professor and as part of working together have been given a starter to raise as some kind of final test to become their successor. Perhaps the 'mon is also literally the offspring of one of the professor's. Interacting with them upon achieving milestones can also be the only way to access some Pokemon, if you'd like. Perhaps they become the player's connection to other regions via their connections to the previous gens' professors. They love to share their joy in finding and raising rare Pokemon with the player and will thus gift the player something otherwise unattainable every, idk, 50 unique pokemon in your dex. Pretty sure canonically Wally passes away from his disease soon after you face him in Victory Road, but if I'm misremembering, he could tune his moveset and IV/EVs to full PvP competitive level (Smogon, Pokemon Showdown, etc) to fully realize the idea of his passion bringing him to the highest peaks of pokemon battling. Basic stuff, I know. Low hanging fruit. Still, it feels like it'd fit well with the direction you're taking their arcs.
I think it would be a cooler approach to double down on that random Torkoal May used: this is an opportunity to have May and Brendon have partially distinct teams from each other! This is the first time we get an option where you encounter a different character depending on the gender you picked at the start, so why not make it feel more distinct by making them more distinct from each other. Making them feel like you're battling a different character, with a different approach to team building, that happens to be filling the same role. Plus if their new goal is to fill out the Pokedex: showing off many different potential pokemon that could be part of their team would emphasize that point all the more. You could have their partial Fire Water Grass cores be filled by different mons, like maybe Brendan uses the usual Magcargo, while May uses that Torkoal, or Brendan using a Shiftry instead of May's Breloom, and Brendan using Relicanth compared to Wailord.
The post-game rival fight in a Pokémon Emerald ROM hack could be a real highlight if it introduces some unexpected twists! Imagine your rival having a revamped, more competitive team with unique move sets and strategic items. Throw in dynamic weather effects that change mid-battle or a field effect that shifts depending on the time of day-this would keep the player on their toes! It’s a great way to challenge seasoned players and give that feeling of a true, final showdown. It’s these kinds of enhancements that make ROM hacks stand out and provide that fresh yet nostalgic experience. Hope to see a fight like this in your recommended ROMs, SmithPlays!
I love the change to make the May/Brendan rival more of a professor type character. Really helps tie their character together to their father, the professor, like the player character is tied to their father, the gym leader. I feel like for the post game, May/Brendan could make use of altering cave, the unused cave that was supposed to have a mystery gift event to change what pokemon spawned there. Maybe have Brendan/May spawn randomly around the map like the reporters do and when you beat them they say something like "Oh by the way, I was looking around this weird cave on Route 103 and found a bunch of [Insert rare pokemon here]. It really helped filling out the pokedex for Dad". You could even try to change their team to include the rare pokemon thats in the cave, so its up to the player to realize that the new pokemon on their team is the rare pokemon thats spawning there right now instead of outright telling them its that pokemon. This would help add an organic way to re-add these exclusive pokemon or add any other new spawns you would want for post game. Gen 3 is my favorite gen and im so hyped for this. Keep up the good work!
>>Post-game rival battle idea. Post game have May/Brandon ask the player about their experience finding a very rare Pokemon on Sky Pillar. They ask you if you'd be willing to take them there so that they could capture some of the Pokemon found in the ruins. The main rival also seems to hint to you that they might even challenge you to a battle there with some of the new Pokemon they caught just as a small thank you for taking them there. As you make your way to the top you encounter a two team admins, one from Aqua and one from Magma. Both are still set on their team's initial goals of re-awakening Groudon/Kyogre and finishing what their team leaders failed to do. Having witnessed the power of Rayquaza, the two have surmised that if either captures Rayquaza it will give them unfettered control over either legendary Pokemon of sea or land. Initially the two admins got to the summit at the same time, but instead of finding Rayquaza they found each other and were about to battle to stop the other's plans. Upon seeing the player at the summit, the admins put aside their battle realizing the player is directly responsible for why Rayquaza is no longer at Sky Pillar and assume the player may already be in possession of Rayquaza. Thus, the two form a temporary truce to double battle you on the spot for Rayquaza while May/Brandon backs you up in the double battle. After the battle May/Brandon gives the admins a stern lecture and the admins saunter out of Sky Ruins realizing they're only pursuing a lost cause at this point. From then on, May/Brandon will hang around Sky Ruins where you can battle them by request. After the first fight you may encounter them in various other isolated places researching Pokemon that you can always offer a rechallenge.
I think a cool idea is having the main rival be out in the field to rematch while they’re catching Pokémon and have 1-2 different Pokémon based on where they are. Give them 4-5 routes they can be found on and then give them slightly different teams for each route. Once beaten they go back home and after beating the e4 they spawn on a differ route. As for Wally I think a delta episode type thing would be cool. Have rayquaza not spawn untill the e4 is beat for the first time. Then meet Wally at rayquaza and he challenges you to see who’s worthy of catching him
I love your content! Main Rival: Leave them with their starter, but then use a bunch of strange interactions between different pokemon. Things like Ledian making use of its unique moveset for defensive set-up to baton pass. The player never sees this type of interaction truly happen and studying pokemon would also involve seeing unique interactions with pokemon competetive battlers often ignore. Rather than it being a hard fight it might sinply be an extended fight seeing new things. Wally: A dialogue with Stephen Stone after beating him where he feels refreshed that TWO young trainers have beat him and hes excited for the future. Then lead the player to an epic battle with Wally.
I don't know if you thought of this, but my favorite part about adding Azumarill to Wally's team is that Marill would be a natural pickup for him when visiting his family in Petalburg, since Marill is found in and around Petalburg! Would love to see the rival dialogue after the champion fight extended/developed - it always felt like May was hinting at something more to me, but it never goes anywhere.
For the main rival, maybe once the national dex is unlocked, we could have some dialogue such as, “i just got back from a trip to Kanto and a caught lots of Pokemon! Wanna battle with them?” And then battle them with a new team containing two or thee Kanto mons alongside some familiar faces
Post game Wally arc that utilizes the secret base mechanics: After you beat the elite 4 Wally goes into a secret base where you can rematch him but has gotten a lot stronger. Perhaps each rematch with him changes his team line up depending on how much of the battle frontier you've completed.
This romhack is now available to play! Click here:

You know, Wally trained with Norman and was also the one to awaken Rayquaza in the manga. A double battle with him and norman or him helping you to catch Rayquaza could be nice postgame nods to that.
Postgame Wally with Rayquaza fight 👀
Rayquaza can be caught before battling the E4 in Emerald, but that idea would work well in Ruby/Sapphire!
I feel like they would end up being more of a detriment, by knocking out Rayquaza when you’re trying to catch it.
I think that Zinnia as an ORAS nod is already involved in the Rayquaza encounter. There's not a bar on manga-inspired stuff, but from what I remember of the discussion surrounding Flannery's grandpa as a cameo, it's not a source for storyline changes.
The rival should have been given a Milotic to really hit home the "finding rare pokemon" angle...
Yeah I agree it's a good pick for that.
idk milotic feels like such a "power" pokemon since its good and is so well known for 2 champion teams in a row. its rare, but more of the "rare strong pokemon" type instead of the "rare collectors pokemon" type like the safari pokemon
While watching the video I did think it would lead to that actually. It would make the fight a little bit more challenging also
Probably post-game if this happens, since it's Wallace's signature and the last rival fight is in Lilycove.
Oh before fortree city a team with a febass and a chimecho maybe some other rare or forgotten pokemon would be cool
Wally getting one extra fight right before Norman is a nice touch for improving his story arc
To double down, here's an idea for Wally's post game team:
Altaria, Magneton, & Roselia can stay
Add in Walrein, Claydol, & Tyranitar
The types not used of the 17 are Normal, Bug, Fight, Ghost, & Fire
Silver isn't fought before every E4 rematch. He only challenges you on certain days. By contrast, Wally *can* be fought before every E4 rematch, it's just optional rather than mandatory.
How did you comment 23 hours ago when the video got released an hour ago 🤔
@@LunarWingCloud that was why I said almost when referencing Silver
@@tomat0talks that's weird, I was watching this yesterday
New creepypasta: May's Torkoal.
Clearly the player killed May's Torkoal and she had to bury it on Mt. Pyre, just like Blue's Raticate. /s
@@SavoxYT bring it back an I want her to evolve her slugma into a macargo!!
😂😂😂😂😂
For the main rival, instead of a post game rematch, I think it would be cool to have them offer trades to the player. They could give rare Pokémon or Pokémon with egg moves to show how they’re studying Pokémon. It might also be interesting to make them a low ranked trainer in contests to show how they’re exploring their passions but contests don’t really click with them either.
Oh, I like that.
@@AverageEggmonEnthusiast maybe she give you the corresponding starter egg! So if you choose treecko she gives you a torchic.. or squirtle!

I love this idea! It allows them to be a fun, varied, and useful challenge while still staying true to their characterization.
Gen 3 desperately needs more daily events like gen 2 so I love this idea
Like I feel like their personality is kind of "I like battling, but I don't want to do it competitively."
I think something like this is perfect post-game content because it's all about showing off game content and doesn't really change anything fundamentally.
For the post game Wally fight, you could give him the Eon twin you didnt choose, to show his true growth as a trainer.
I am surprised you skipped the fact that Azumarill is a Pokémon that is already *kinda* associated to Wally, most specifically his cracked rematch team from the ORAS Battle Maison. I dunno if that was intentional or not
2 things:
1) Don't forget that if you manage to avoid the fight in Rustboro City, they will approach you when heading into Mr.
Technically Shedinja is not a "incredibly rare pokemon". You can catch Nincada right next to Rustboro.
@@Xeno_Solarus not rare to players with wikis and strategy guides, but within the world is a wholly unique way to encounter a pokemon
If I can win against you here maybe I can go against the elite four!"
Idk gives him something to get stronger for, and actually acknowledges that you've beat the champion
@@tsukasa67 I think that was sword and shield
I agree, delcatty is kinda ass for a final team. Exploud seems like a good replacement. I can’t think of any other good normal type replacements.
@@theshankpain2228 and smith already said that he improved exploud! and that delcatty isn't that good
@@theshankpain2228 Zangoose would be ok as well
@@nesradub360As good as Zangoose is, I feel Exploud works better due to the similar vibe Wally’s story gets from the Whismur line, starting off kind of weak and quiet before evolving into something stronger.
I don't think that they nailed it at all. An asshole does not necessarily make for a good rival and I think that Blue as a character was very weak.
@@TheKabuto90 I think it’s not the character they nailed, but what the rival archetype represents. Blue functions as a test of skills (him being someone with just as much experience as you). While the character is bland, it gives off the feeling of being in a rivalry.
@@TheKabuto90 To be honest, he's not even an asshole. He may be sometimes a bit rude, but that's it.
Giving Wallys Gardevoir Double Team just seems evil x)
I’d rather see it have Shadow Ball since you made ghost special now so it covers a bit more.
Phoebe would work with a chimecho, since you can find em on top of mt pyre where her grandparents keep the orbs so would be a good lore choice
@@machinat3636 I'll be honest, Ninetales would be a slightly better fit considering the lore about mystic foxes and spirits
Have one of the house in mauviille belong to Watson I’d say the house across the bike place that’s sort of blocked off right next to the house to get rock smash from …maybe Winona’s secret base could be above the waterfall by the weather institute
..maybe Wally could be somewhere in or around the verdenturf tunnel.
He also has other dialogue later that suggests he looked down on you for being a girl, but no longer feels this way
Wow, two random lines of dialogue...
All of the dialogue is different. Transcripts are available to read on Bulbapedia.
I think that qualifies as “not much difference”.
Maybe an epilogue that has to do with both Jirachi and Wally. That's what I think.
@@mingacio1996 great idea. Jirachi definitely suits him. I can totally see it. Maybe you can RematcH Wally with it after you get a Symbol from the battle frontier or he shows up with it in tow at the top of the trainer Hill..
Postgame:
Wally- Have him be an optional fight at the battle frontier, with his final team being fully IV + EV'd out, with competitive movsets.
I
all the gold medals woulf be to restrictive
@@bayronhicks3132 Maybe 1 Gold medal? Is that too much?
Wally leveling up like 3 levels and challenging you right after leaving the victory road cave would be awesome and super menacing, like “no way we made it at the same time one more battle before we challenge the league” and then completely unexpected battle where he has a chance to absolutely wipe you.
For the post game, May/Brendan should have extremely rare Pokemon: a sudowoodo since there's one in the Battle Frontier, Milotic, Relicanth, a high level wynaut (holding liechi Berry) from Mirage Island, and a medicham since they're unavailable in normal emerald
Wally can have the same team, but with competitive movesets / EVs.
Normally I’d be fine suggesting her team may have Hoenn Pokémon that Emerald Specifically cuts out of the game roster
Like Surskit/Masquerain
Meditie/Medicham
Roselia
Zangoose
Lunatone.. but since they can be found in game idk if I see the merit in suggesting that. I’m open to ideas
I would like that outside fortree city when u battle her she has a feebas & kecleon!
In front of the dept. store Mays got a chimecko since it’s like a 2% shot of catching one on mount pyre.
Later on Or ..she could either have Latios/latias or a shiny
Or we could stick her a uncommon Pokémon mawhile Nosepass wigglytuff
slakoth snorunt ..if Smith didn’t mess with the encounter rates I’d have said Surskit.
Maybe we battle her outside the Safari Zone once it’s been Expanded
She could have a snubbull gligar… The rarest has got to be a level 5 Gyarados. Technically levels 6-19 are just as rare, but 5 is the lowest level you can legally obtain a Gyarados
If you go to Sootopolis and use the Super Rod, there is a 20% chance to find a Gyarados. They can appear at any level from 5 to 45.. the lowest one I’ve ever caught was LV8, 10, 12… an I’ve had the game for a super long time.
Or we stick with the original team but have her have all 6
Swellow Camerupt Macargo Wailord Breloom STARTER but have her pop up like Ty & Gabby all over the Region with her pkmn getting higher every few battles..an some getting swapped out depending on location.
Torkoal Ludicolo Pelipper Tropius Macargo STARTER

Yes, replace Grumpig with the Lati- that we don't choose as our roaming legendary.
@justinkidd7634 I don't think they would force us to choose one so rival wouldn't be able to have another.
@@justinkidd7634I like this idea or maybe give it to Wally! We can see it when he challenges us again when we try an rematch the Elite 4.
For Example, Task 1:" I want to conduct research on Milotic, can you show me one please?"
Task 2: Can you show me a smeargle with move "X"
You get the idea.
Think you killed it with Wally! Always felt like he was shoehorned in as a replacement rival at the end
No to the Lati-Twins but Deoxys would pretty cool. Maybe even Jirachi instead?
I cannot stand my team having type overlaps so I understand how you feel Smith.
Me as well
For Wally, I think introducing the Azumarill line earlier would make a lot of sense.
12:05 Cool Trainer Gerald- Ahem 🤨. Do I need to get Flannery to have a word with you?
I’m glad i wasn’t the only one who remembered the random Kecleon in the fire gym
@@CractusJohn
I remember cause the damn thing had flamethrower and was a pain to take out.
Just give Brendan/May postgame fight with super rare pokemon like all sudo legendaries, starter, and maybe Eeveelution that was weak to your starter.
Post-game rival fight Ideas:
Brendan/May: Even though they've given up on being the greatest battler, they agree to take you up on one last battle for "old times sake".
The random ad ends at 5:28
wtf was that
@@Sanicfan9192 LOL idk
5:30 when it actually ends. Something something Temu IKEA

The real rival is you and having any friends, post an apology

With the Rival focusing on catching Rare Pokemon, what about Mirage Island and making it a guaranteed post-game event, if anything, for flavor? It could also potentially tie in Latios and Latias, who are starting to roam the map from that location.
For Wally with the inclusion of the Battle Frontier, allowing him to randomly be an opponet. Once you have fought him once I believe shaping up a hardcore team with competitive movesets and iteams would only help show his growth as a trainer.
Still waiting for your apology

Possible rival duo battle? Main game rival gets to have the Pokémon you would now really associate with them, like Grumpig and maybe their safari encounter as well as their starter. Wally could have Gardevoir, altaria and Azumarill.
Or maybe they could each gain some more surprise members. It would work in the main rivals favour as that would show off how they caught a wide variety of Pokémon.
11:02 "Outside of Clamperl, Sprinkle might be the most forgotten pokemon in Hoenn"
Snorunt: "Am I a joke to you?"
For three post game, maybe you could make the main rival’s role be to help the player catch rare Pokemon. The idea behind this is that is the main rival chooses to focus more time on the finding rare Pokemon, then by the post game they could be an expert who helps the player. There are two ways I think this could work
The first way would be to have rare Pokemon spawn at different routes every day, and the main rival could let the player know which routes they can find rare Pokemon each day. This would function kind of like the weather institute telling the player where they can find Groudon and Kyogre
The second way would be to make them related to altering cave in some way.
Im picturing 2 At-Home (or at research locations) features for the Main Gendered Rival
1) Talk to them and they'll show you uncommon and rare Pokedex entries, like how Bill could in Gen1, this allowing you to know where to catch them
2) Rival shows you an Entry for an Roaming pokemon, and also unlocks being able to catch it. Granted, I don't know which pokemon to roam (probably not Lati•s)
Post-game Wally idea:
Gym Leader Norman's final rematch team is a multi-battle.
It's not just a manga reference. May is heavily involved in contests in the anime too. So that's even more of a reason to back up your idea
For the main rival since they’re interested in befriending Pokemon, what if for the post game, for each rebattle they have different teams with mons that are rare to find from Kanto Johto and depending on the starter chosen by the player
These changes are great, can’t wait to play this.
Some suggestions:
- The pre-League Wally battle should take place outside the entrance of Victory Road, by the flowers
- Would be dope if GBA-style versions of Wally’s encounter/battle themes from ORAS were implemented in EL
- Wally should definitely be a post-game superboss in the Battle Frontier with a more competitive team.
After the Main Rival's Lilycove or Sootopolis encounter, one function they can have is giving daily tips on rare Pokemon you can find in specific areas, like
"Even with the Weather Institute, the old folks in Fortree City say they count on seeing a grim-looking Pokemon in Route 121 to warn them about incoming storms."
Or "I heard from Mr.
And if we want a battle with May/Brendan, we could fight them prior to encountering the rare Pokémon as sort of a test to see who should get the chance to get the rare Pokémon
As for Wally in the post-game, I like other commenters’ suggestion of having him be a cracked trainer with a full competitively-viable team in the Battle Frontier
He definitely survives in the mega timeline. He's in SM at the Battle Tree.
I like the idea of Wally becoming a monster who is ready to surpass you and finally step out of your shadow.
Heres a great suggestion for wally: actually give him the rival battle theme
