      My wife had the Fold3 for about 1.5 years or 2, and just moved to an S23 Ultra. We were both heavy note users since the Note 2. But she went back because the line that folds, starting getting a bunch of microscopic cracks. And got anoying on white backgrounds. I got a fold 4 almost a year ago. Mine is starting to do the same. I'm going to the Ultra now that they have the note back and just renamed. But I'm a heavy spen user and spen on my fold is a speed bump on the back. And I find myself using the front screen 99% of the time. The hing is like magic! Lol

      I always marvel when I think about people who are 100 years old today. As a Samsung technician, i'd say the 5th generation of Samsung foldables are quite flimsy to work on. Flip 5 is a bit easier opening up with basic tools, but the fold 5 sub Octa screen (small screen) needs special equipment as it sits flash into the frame and the tape adhesive used on it holds too much. Same case with the Samsung S9 ultra tablet, adhesive design is quite tricky. Technicians stay alert!

  • @michaelbondarenko4650
    @michaelbondarenko4650 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +61

    Hey Zack, owner of Flip 4 here, the microscopic sand that got into the hinge actually IS an issue. The reason is that once it's there, after you use it for a couple of weeks, the ribbons that connect the halves of the phone get sanded away. So my phone, after some dust got inside and it was working seemingly fine for a while, first had it's microphone disconnected, then the screen, then the screen had magically reconnected, so I used it without a working mic for a while, but after another few weeks, the lower battery started disconnecting, so when I fold the phone, it turns off immediately and shows bad battery. And you know what? To replace those ribbons, that cost 25 centa each, is the same as replacing the entire screen with the phone body, which costs hundreds of dollars, because guess what everything is glued shut and none of those parts any repair services are willing to replace on their own. So please tell about that to your subscribers next time. Thanks for your video :) I'll be trying to fix my flip 4 myself by swapping the working screen into a donor phone soon, we'll see how it goes, hope isopropyl alcohol helps :)

    • @michaelbondarenko4650
      @michaelbondarenko4650 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Update: it worked. But the magnet in the new body is too strong and the phone thinks it's closed (as I use the old motherboard calibrated for the old body). So I will need to replace it later. Until that, I carry a magnet in my pocket to place it on the back of the phone so it turns on...

      It is the natural progression for a note user. I had the note 2, 4, and 8 and then graduated to the s21 ultra. The fold 5 is my first foldable phone and it is a sweet device. As much as I wanted the aspect ratio on the front to be more like the pixel fold, I now appreciate the ease of holding and using the fold with one hand for quick checks of messages, but as Samsung has stated, the main screen is the interior one and it's glorious to watch youtube videos and to be able to multi-task on. I tend to only use two apps at a time to multi-task with. My favorite pairing is with the youtube andgoogle maps while I am driving. If you make the jump to the fold, you won't be dissapointed. Just warranty replaced my Fold 4 for a second time in a year. The first time, it just shut off and stopped working, would not power on. In my research many of the first ones had a problem with the lego connector of one of the ribbons not being set well at manufacturing and they were poping loose fairly early on. I think that was a manufacturing flaw that was fixed relatively quickly. The second one I just replaced today had the dreaded won't open all the way problem.
    I think as his video shows, fine dirt will get into the hinge area and gum up the works. So kept using with just the slight bend 175° when open, annoying but everything still worked. Problem though after a few months using like this the built in screen protector started to peal up down the middle to the point 1 inch strip hovering over the screen. Many said once you get to that happening repair/replacement or the internal screen will crack and they will say it was your fault. Verizon Extended warranty is covering this one.
    I think the next innovation the Fold 6 should have is the screws that hold the rear hinge center section, or spine, should be on the outside. So a technician without removing any displays or back glass could remove that spine of the fold while closed, and could vacuum/compressed air clean out the hinge of fine dirt and dust, completely, then graphite lubricate the now clean hinges and the phone would lay flat again. Simply have 6 or 8 tiny security torx screws come in from the outside, make reparability of the hinges much better for the fact they are NOT Dust proof in this area.

      Keyword “if”. Personally I don’t think apple is interested in them. Take the mini series for example. They were the worst selling iPhones but yet had the strongest community. Everyone who got one loved it and swore by it. But since they didn’t sell like the standards of the pro series, they quit production after releasing just two models. A foldable phone could follow a similar path. But knowing apples reputation, a different path it could take is to be priced extremely high and become the “ultimate phone”. Aka jewerly for rich people. The same path their vr headset is heading.

    It's interesting to see how the interconnect ribbon cable folds. It divides the 180° into 3 sections.
    Ensuring that the cable does not bend more than 60° which should translate to greater durability and more folds before metal fatigue sets in.
    The pen digitizer feels like a wasted effort. Last I checked with a buddy of mine who owns a f4, he keeps it at home, doesn't find much use of it and wanted to give his away.

    • @0xD1CE
      @0xD1CE 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's sortof just the tradeoff with trying to cram as much technology into a compact device. Phones back then were only "easier" to repair because a lot of it was mostly plastic. And even back then people didn't bother repairing them. If your flip phone broke you just buy a new one.

    • @vladimus9749
      @vladimus9749 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@0xD1CE True, but flip phones were $300-400 on the high end and free with a contract. Glass backs have nothing to do with technology. Wireless charging and NFC existed before them just fine. Plus glass is an insulator so it traps heat inside of your phone better than plastic or aluminum which is an excellent heat conductor. Apple realized they could get away with such an anti-consumer move because they said it was their new style and everyone else followed suit.

    Usually when buying replacement parts original Samsung you get the display mounted in the housing already so you just switch the insides over. We never repair the foldables though since they are so damn sensitive and too much work sadly. We need to count in the time in the repair and it is not economical with these models i'm afraid.

      @KellySimonsson 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@BloodyLlama759 oh I am so sorry to hear this! :( You are not the first one I've heard this from i'm afraid. Many other places that repairs smartphones won't touch any of the foldable phones. It is real shame really but they aren't made to be repaired easily sadly. The new fold v5 that just dropped is even IP rated so they have gaskets and even more adhesives on to protect it but it makes it even more unrepairable. Just to buy the screen original part is excrutionally expensive. I am guessing you had to pay a high sum for the repair itself?
