Exactly... your man doesn't have to work as hard on defense, your man never gets into foul trouble, your team doesn't get into the bonus as quickly, and people forgot that 3-point plays are a thing.

What made The NBA great was not having the copycat league narrative nba analyst adopt from The NFL. What made all the other years great was that every team had their own identities. You thought Bulls you thought Jordan, pippen and the triangle offense. Pacers Reggie miller 3 point sniper, pistons bad boys fundamental and gritty defense, Knicks blue collar basketball, lakers fast break finesse…. The list goes on. Now it’s 2 man iso and 35 plus 3 pointers for every team.

The fix is simple. Bring back hand checking, eliminate the foul where players are shooting and a defender gets close, eliminate the rule made for Curry where a cutting path can not be impeded, remove the gather step that was made for Lebron because he always traveled before starting his dribble. Remove the move where they pick up their dribble and take steps before shooting 3s, that might be the gather step rule. I hate it, it looks awful, it looks like a travel. Am I wrong that no one did that before Harden? I watched and played ball my whole life and no one ever dd that until Harden, after the gather step rule.
But this fixes the NBA imo.

I played Basketball in the 80 's & 90's and was able to go to College because of it. I think the problem is the Executives wanted a higher scoring game so they put these ticky tack rules in to do that. You barely touch a player, foul. Are game was physical and when we scored, we earned it. If we went to the free throw line it was because it was a outrageously hard foul. Fouls that they call today going to the paint, guys back then knew to get up and play defense because it wasn't considered a foul...
They need to get back to hand checking. If you bodied up on these players today, their games would be pathetic because they wouldn't know how to work their way out of it...
Watch Old Skool NBA videos with these kids from this era. They'd probably have a heart attack because the fouls that they call today wasn't called in those days. It have to be something truly serious to be called a foul...
PS, it wasn't any huffing and puffing back then. It was BENCH CLEARING BRAWLS back in those Days. That's why the NBA was always exciting in that era. These New Age All Stars wouldn't be All Stars in that era. Because that was real Basketball. You'll always have People from those Days saying that today's NBA is nothing compared to then and the ratings are providing exactly what we are talking about...

I remember that interview by Jordan bringing it up now is syncronicity. If the NBA wants viewership to go up they have to bring back defense. Currently theres not hand checking from the free throw line extended they should bring back hand checking from free throw line extended but on double teams no hand checking. This would allow defenders to not worry about ticky tack calls and for the offensive player he will have the opportunity how much talent he has by either going by both and making a play or it will show who has the basketball iq to make the right basketball play. This will make the players hit the weights and develop their game with more than just side and step back 3s.

A strategy about mostly shooting 3s makes the game more boring because it lacks confrontation, it makes the players look like they're scared of going against each other, even Ray Allen was a great dunker early in his career.
Nowadays you get teams like the Celtics, live by the 3 or die by the 3, what's worse than a team winning because they made like 35 3s? A team that lost because they missed like 70% of their possessions due to abusing the 3.

@@JonahsWail It seems to be a recency bias. NBA players today score 3s at similar percentages as they did in the past, despite the fact that they now play against little-to-no defense. Unlike older players of the 90s and 2000s, who rarely had open shots at the three point line, many 3s these days are basically uncontested jumpers. Yet, modern players still have trouble getting in those shots.

  • @JohnDoukasPhotography
    @JohnDoukasPhotography 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I don't know about it being "by design." Maybe if you mean it's become just a product, then yes. Most of the previous generations grew up watching basketball and as you said, emulated it. But there's also coaching that is heavily involved in organized basketball. Now with analytics and big amounts of money involved, there's no incentive to work harder to produce arguably similar outcomes in terms of contracts and results. There's also a seeming disinterest in how things "used to be" and disregarded as "Old Heads complaining."
New solutions could involve limiting contracts to one year. Make players earn their keep. Then create a penalty box for flopping. It's gotten pretty stupid. Train ref's not to call ghost fouls and T's, and to call travels and carries. The league has just gotten lazy in maintaining the quality of play from professional players. Let defense be more physical with hand checking, resulting in more full-court press and less lone shooters hanging at the perimeter.

  •  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

Not only is it the 3 pt shot, it’s also the obvious corrupt officiating. It’s almost illegal to play defense now. Too many whistles and unnecessary foul calls, and they don’t even call travel.

Hard to watch a bunch of spoiled divas cry after missing an open 3 (after their 30th attempt of the game) and ask the ref to go to the line for their free throws. I don't think the 3ball necessarily made the game worse, it was the unofficial rules, not calling obvious fouls, calling bs fouls that almost seem too ridiculous to be true and then refs inserting themselves too much.
Then the teams choosing to aquire more 3 shooters over other types of players and then having teams all basically the same.
The 3s in the 80s & 90s was perfectly balanced. Today due to offensive favoured style of basketball by the league, it's very unbalanced and no longer enjoyable to watch

A touchdown from 5 yd pass or run counts the same as a pass or run from the 50yd line or one's 5yd line (e.g. hail mary). A homerun counts as 1 or moving base runners along to home plate counts as 1. Now that it's proven that shooters can shoot anywhere from the half court line down, just count them all the same!

Zone defense. I'm a former Big East fan. The NBA mimicked the Big East for about 15-20 years IMO. The only thing the NBA didn't mimic was zone defense. Even though every team tried like hell to get away with it! MJ got called multiple times in a finals game and at that time it was a technical every time past the first.
Anyways. Now days, every damn team in the league seems to play 4 player on the wings! No one posts up and works low. It's there for the damn taking!
On top of that, the last I watched , I counted 7 blatant travels, 3 flops, 4 airballs, and 17 assists that are absolutely not assists! I abstain from 98% of it these days!

That is an interesting clip bc MJ was conscious of shooting too many 3’s for fear of messing up his overall game. What he described is exact what happens in today’s game - players standing around waiting for the ball for a spot up 3. Unfortunately some of the people shooting the 3 are NOT good shooters. Ironically, people ask if it will change; bit of you have young kids in little league being groomed that way in every city - they are teaching position less basketball - we may never see another complete basketball player. Wemby who may be the youngest active player in the league is a prime example. He is 7’4” tall and he avgs at 7-8 3’a per night and avg about 21 pts per game. If half of those 3’s were shots around the rim he would avg almost 30/gm.

Scalabrini already said how to fix the game. Remove the 3 second defensive rule, that will eliminate the drive and dish to the weak side or weak side swings for open 3s,. If you remove the rule there wont be a weak side cause the center would now be able to camp in the paint and defend both sides easily instead of having to step out of the paint cause of that stupid rule. That leaves 4 defenders to stay on the outside, and switch with every pick. Now every corner is covered. So if the offense wants to shoot a 3 its always going to be contested 3 and the percentages will go down even more, so teams would have to shoot 60-80 3s a night to get back on pace with their current numbers. And thats just not gonna happen 😆😆. So teams will have to implement the mid range game again and posting up to keep the hovering center occupied. Its a whole chain reaction if they just get rid of the stupid 3 second rule. They also need to bring back hand checking, no holding allowed but a basic hand check should still be allowed.

Yes, data analytics. Money ball works for baseball. Money ball made basketball boring.
What may change the game is allowing teams to play defense and or moving the 3point line back. Lower the probability of making 3s you change the math.

Anyone who has played basketball will know that you start jacking up shots when you’re tired.
So it actually benefits players today, as it prolongs their careers due to less fatigue/stress on muscles from driving and defending.

I find it hard to believe that shooting 3s is the reason why people dont watch games as much. Nobody talking about everything else **outside** the games? Like availability, too many subscription services, too expensive, games being an ad galore, you gotta sit through 2 hours of ads, the game having so so many interrumptions, if you watch the last hour of a 3 hour game there's maybe 10 minutes of play? The rhythm of the game is broken to the point of boredom. Make games accessible, make games be game, things will change. It's hard to want to sit through a regular season game as a neutral when you gotta pay so much to see it and when you gotta sit through 2 hours of ads, regardless of how much the brick or not.

The NBA should call more travels, get rid of the corner 3 by moving the 3 point line out, get rid of the 3 seconds in the lane on defense and let the defense play more physical, but don't bring back hand checking. If Players keep jacking up too many 3 point shots then limit how many they can shoot each quarter or each game.

In the 80s it was showtime with little defense. In the 90s it was hardcore defense. In the 2000s showmanship was starting to make a comeback like White Chocolate, but TH-cam, Kendrick Perkins and Steve Kerr brought something to the game that changed it forever. Perkins proved a 7 footer can shoot the 3. TH-cam brought teachers of fundamentals to the masses, and Steve Kerr greenlighted his players to jack up 3s all over the place. It worked, they won championships and now, with TH-cam, young kids are learning how to shoot properly, no matter their size and coaches are letting them shoot. Back in the day coaches didn't let big men dribble or shoot and you sure as heck didn't jack it up from the logo. If you did, you sat the bench.
There is no such thing as the way the game was meant to be played, it's just a game and the team that scores the most wins. It is as simple as that. Different coaches will bring different ideas to the game and it will keep morphing. I suspect it will go back to the 80s for a while or something in history but who knows. That is part of the fun, what will come next.

The 3 point line needs to be taken away... Then, the defense will ramp up because more players will focus on setting the post!

The NBA had been unwatchable until the finals for decades. They have a lot to learn about what is entertainment
