RiSe Typhoon Not really. All these celebrities are real people, out there in the world. They eat, they buy stuff, they have their bathrooms renovated. It’s hardly surprising that people eventually encounter them every now and then, and because they’re famous, those people vividly remember when it happens, and where else besides TH-cam are ppl gonna congregate on a topic like this and leave comments? Maybe Reddit. But you get my point.
Any drummer who knows what he’s doing knows how good Lars is. And knowing what you’re doing has nothing to do with technical ability. But actual drumming. Being the groove. Being the beat. He’s one of the best metal drummers of all time. You know why? Because you will never listen to a Metallica song and say “oh wow there’s Lars”. He seamlessly blends into the sound. He’s always perfectly servicing the song. Metal always sounds best in its most simplest form. He’s no technical god. But he’s a great drummer & composer. He writes these songs. He clearly knows how to drum to them. His bank account says so.
I was looking for this comment, it always irks me when people shit on Lars (so I’m irked often), even when they try and defend him by saying “he writes all the songs and is a great manager” which is also true, but it’s like you said, his drumming is one with the songs and while not being technically outstanding it still is really great to me so I don’t even care what other people think because I think drumming isn’t meant to be a main focus of Metallica, and for that Lars is perfect and no greater drummer is really even required in my eyes, he provides exactly what is needed so I don’t see the issue
I agree, and they are a power metal band and people seem to think metal is about all that technical speed, blast beats and that stuff is really in my opinion crap! And annoying! Straight crunchy power metal riffs and thunderous drums is metal !
I'm gonna add to this, he also just isn't bad at drumming in general. People hate him because "his fills are bad" or "he can't keep the band in time" but then you listen to him and he sounds great, he's the reason I want to be a drummer. I don't care what anyone else says.
I like most of Lars drumming. He's never been impressive on a technical level, but he was creative and original back in the day. He turned beats around, hit his crash cymbals where you wouldn't expect them, etc. Same reason I love Thomas Stauch (ex-Blind Guardian), very original drumming.
+Lord Baktor I always felt that he played drums very musically...lots of things that were very memorable. Great drummer no, but then again, what is a great drummer? Somebody who can play anything in any meter but who is obscure, or a guy like Lars who is accessible and has inspired countless people to start playing?
Penitten I'd be excited to tell them my friends were the ones who perpetrated the pro napster hacks after the lawsuit and that they are a bunch of primadonnas
Class act, this guy. Metallica got me into metal, they are and always will be my favorite band. Rock on Lars, there's a reason you're at the top of the heap.
One of the best drummers in heavy metal history, between 1985 and 1992 there weren't many drummers better than him around, he's not only one of the best drummers but one of the best songwriters also, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Lars and James are 2 geniuses.
Gar Samuelson, Dave Lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinert, Mike Portnoy, just to name a few Whatever you see in this guy, I don’t see it. He is not a good drummer, period.
@@XiyuYang Matter of opinion. I disagree with you, who cares? P.S. How in the world you can leave out Neil Peart from your list isn't something I understand. 😁
Lars is the greatest creator of drum tracks in history. He also beats the shit out of drums:D He is a very interresting guy and a great talker:D I don't know why so many people hate on him so much. He isn't perfect, but I like him:)
people hate on him because he let his drumming skills slide so much since the days of and justice for all and master of puppets. he's interesting, but he's gotten LAZY.
***** Lars is Lars:D He does things his own way:) Lars can be a great drumer when he is drumming regularly. He is however the greatest drum composer in history for my taste.
I don't laugh at his drum skills... I can't play the drums and he can... so that makes him a better drummer than me. (Ok he's not the best ever by far but he still gets some respect from me.for some skill...)
Honestly these are the comments Trump supporters would make. This when logic of bank account doesn't really make sense cuz if it did, people wouldn't be allowed to have opinions. I'm not being a socialist retard here but you do realize that somewhere down the line musical integrity really matters, yeah? It directly affects your longevity, and then people can laugh at how you don't even play a double bass drum it's all pre recorded
By no means Lars is an amazing drummer but he gets the job done as is the perfect fit for metallica. Metallica wouldn't sound the same without Lars and their wouldnt be no Metallica without Lars
I've always loved Lars and his drumming. He is the cream of the crop and he wrote so many legendary songs. A true artist and a humble soul. I will always love Lars and Metallica. They are truly a special band and they deserve all the fame and fortune.
~ Dear everyone hating on Lars and Metallica All you wanna be idiots can talk trash all you want but if you walked into a GC for a drum kit or some new gear, and Lars Ulrich was chillin' playing awesome beats and telling stories about how he got started, do you really think you would be like "Oh man he's so bad" or "This is so lame and their twats"? Or would you just sit there like the slimy infants you are and crap your diapers because you are in the presence of hard rock religion? ~Sincerely, Unsatisfied King-Troll
After watching this I have to ask myself, "What is my goal? What is my real motive?". …I feel I keep myself grounded with a little introspection. "I want to play music. My own. I'd like to be heard. I want to share different ideas of what the world can be. We already know what it is. I want to retire the idea of a 'Day job', it's obsolete. I'm not going to chase money. I loathe the idea of a "Rock Star". Stars fade. And money comes and goes. I've heard before, adhere to and take solemn in, "While on earth, what will you do with your time? If it's not to better the world, to give your time to others, you're simply wasting it."
I love Lars, he's my favorite drummer of all time. Seriously, why does he get so much hate? He does some great stuff, especially live. I'd like to see you guys play with metallica
@@josephhutchins8 Jeez... James always says that refering to the ver first time he rehearsed, months before early Metallica was even formed...Interpretation problems? James said the same thing in VH1 behind the music Documentary back in 99...Lars was pretty ok especially in the second half of the 80's.
Word on the street is that Lars is actually the funnest member of the band to hang with. This from some friends who have played a show or two with Metallica. Lars is the only one who will party with the younger bands and keep the party Rollin'. So much in fact that he reportedly becomes a bizarre drunken mess, prone to inappropriate comments and uncomfortable behavior.
I find it ironic, because let's face it, he does kinda suck now. Totally different drummer than he used to be. Seems like it's difficult for him to execute fairly simple beats alot of the time. But perhaps his partying is one reason why he sucks now.
People gripe about Ulrich's skills which is quite callow. Tell you what, someone like Neal Peart wouldn't sound right with the style of Metallica with all the extra tinkering on every piece on the drum set. It would simply be too much and wouldn't fit the objective of loud drums as being central to Metallica. Ulrich's raw skills fit very well with Metallica's sound and style.
That's a very diplomatic way of saying Lars sucks. Lol Put Neil Peart in ANY band, and that band will sound better. Why? Because Neil Peart can actually play his instrument. Lars can't.
Jack Frost You fail to understand differing genres of rock and drumming styles that complement and fit those genres. Peart's style works great with Rush where he can tinker and add many differing techniques just as the band does with their synthesizers as well. The drumming matches that. This wouldn't fit in with Metallica's sound. In other words Peart would have to change his style with them just as he'd have to change his style with say Led Zeppelin. If he brought the way he drummed with Rush to either of those bands it would not fit.
Jack Frost Bull shit. It's about energy as much as skill. Bands are about friendship, enthusiasm more than skill. Neil Peart in RHCP? Nope. John Bonham is better than him any every way any way.
I had the chance to do a meet and greet with Lars here in Las Vegas (outside of an Einstein Bros. of all places) and he couldn't've been cooler. Granted he's my inspiration to pick up a pair of sticks as well as playing heavy music so this whole situation was cast in a rose-colored lens but looking back now, I still feel the same way and can honestly say he's a genuine dude. Very personable, easy to talk to and extremely nice. Thank you Lars Ulrich for doing what you do and thank you Metallica for making an obscure meet and greet possible.
Laugh at me if you want, i love his playing, and my fav is Neil. Im also a drummer. Lars has a Brilliant way of structuring a song. He has made more money than just about every drummer not named ringo. Hes filthy rich for a reason. Hes sold more albums than any other heavy metal band in history. So make fun all you want, i love his drumming because its original and you can tell when its him on the kit.
Take a shot for every "um", thank me later. Seriously though, man's a legend. Had the privilege to see these guys play live 3 times in my life. Unforgettable experience!
Lars is known to be an asshole. A lot of people still complain about the whole Napster stuff. (Napster was a way to download music for free and Lars sued them). He has apparently gotten super sloppy and isn't a good drummer anymore or at least not as good as he use to be (I'm a guitar player and I don't know enough to back that point with evidence, it's just what i've seen said about him). That's about it really. Oh and the fact that a lot of videos with Lars where he's talking, he is eating. It's the most infuriating and annoying thing ever.
Because you have a lot of people on TH-cam rhat can’t play drums but they’re “experts”. And some were sore because he spoke up about them stealing his music. But I bet if you were to steal something of theirs they’d have a much less cavalier attitude about it.
I'm glad I found this interview. I like that Tama helped him out when he truly needed it. I think he's a really good drummer for the most part. He's really honest and genuine.
His words are gold if not better than gold. He didn't look for fame he looked for happiness what he truely loves no expectations just being happy. Most people will never understand what and where he's gotten to cause he's not chasing it just living it
One of the greatest metal drummer, best business manager, and a band leader / founder of the greatest and biggest band of all time (metallica). Lars is an inspiration.
Mr. Ulrich - the rhythm in the Metallica machine :) He plays with a lot of feeling and energy which I feel is important for a drummer. He's also always been hands on with the band, working hard to make sure one good album after the next is written, performed and produced for all of us - their loyal fans :D Tama is a very good brand so, he's always got a good kit to smash away at show after show :)

It's not about how fast you can drum, it's about the skills, the rhythm and techniques and that's what it takes to be a great drummer. Lars may be alot of things and hate on him if you want but he's still one of the greatest.
This guy recorded amazing records and he´s a great drummer as a creative composer.. his ideas are fantastic and few can get such a musical ideas in a drum set (specially, And Justice For All, very creative and an amazing sound and ideas in Black Album) Respect him!
Lars is a huge contributor to what the band sounds like on every record. He is more than a drummer, he has a musician in site for all the songs that Metallica has given us! Love to be able to jam with him, it's on my bucket list!!
Enter Sandman was altered by Mr Ulrich in order to become tha legend it is today....the drum change on the song and Justice for all is a real book of inspiration and the space that Ulrich gives to the bass during heir career is endless. Even the name Metallica was his job to take for his small and unknown then band. Lars is a true metal fan after all. Thank you for everything.
You can't get more rock n roll than Lars. He's the real deal. Like Hetfield, he was a totally unlikely rock star. Who could have known? Noone in the 80's could have guessed that this little danish tennis player (and his painfully shy buddy James) would conquer the whole damn world. This is rock n roll, folks! Misfits, oddballs and so called losers transform into super heroes. If you love metal and rock n roll, you can't seriously hate Lars Ulrich.
I listen to all sorts of metal , death, progressive, tech etc. Lars just fits Metallica and is living proof you can be a solid drummer without all the face melting fills and blast beats to be successful. He worked his ass off and deserves all the rewards of his success.
Wow! Lars is far cooler, and way more down-to-earth than I ever realized. Regardless of what anyone thinks of his talent level, he is co-founder of arguably the King of the Big 4. Much love and respect to Lars for his ability to overcome all of the hurdles he has had to overcome....and to do so with a humble attitude, and staying on top.
It's always interesting to see artists in sit down interviews like this. They seem so different from their on stage persona most of the time. When the band is on stage and the volume is cranked they seem one way but then you see this and think man they are just like anyone else really. Like you could just have a conversation with them and you wouldn't think twice about it if you had no idea who they were. I like how some of the biggest names in rock/metal seem so down to earth when you take away the instruments.
Searching through most of the discography, I've managed to find 3 songs where the ride cymbal is used. Hit the Lights, No Remorse, and Fight Fire With Fire
+RemakeJake A lot in Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning. In Disposable Heroes on Master (maybe in Orion, too). I don't think anytime in Justice or Metallica. A lot in soft parts of Load. Not as much in Reload. Mainly used the china in place of the ride in St. Anger.
You guys are still relevant Lars, more so than a lot of new bands that come and go. Hardwired was a killer album, and already has inspired new guitarists to write killer riffs in inspiration of it. I should know, I’m one of em

No Lars no Metallica
@@swaginator5077 That's what I said to everyone who disrespect Lars
I'm gonna add to this, he also just isn't bad at drumming in general. People hate him because "his fills are bad" or "he can't keep the band in time" but then you listen to him and he sounds great, he's the reason I want to be a drummer. I don't care what anyone else says.
I like most of Lars drumming. He's never been impressive on a technical level, but he was creative and original back in the day. He turned beats around, hit his crash cymbals where you wouldn't expect them, etc. Same reason I love Thomas Stauch (ex-Blind Guardian), very original drumming.
+Lord Bator Exactly! And yeah, he does crash on weird sounds like on the the and of 1 instead of 1. It's one of his "signature" things he does.
+Lord Baktor Ulrich does a lot of cool stuff on Load...escpecially on Ronnie.
+Lord Baktor And Matthew Mcdonough from Mudvayne.
+Lord Baktor I always felt that he played drums very musically...lots of things that were very memorable. Great drummer no, but then again, what is a great drummer? Somebody who can play anything in any meter but who is obscure, or a guy like Lars who is accessible and has inspired countless people to start playing?

Rock on Lars, there's a reason you're at the top of the heap.
One of the best drummers in heavy metal history, between 1985 and 1992 there weren't many drummers better than him around, he's not only one of the best drummers but one of the best songwriters also, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, Lars and James are 2 geniuses.

He laughs at your bank account
Hahaa ...no shit!
It's ok. I'd rather have a shaved head, be poor, and have some legitimacy.

Lars isn't the best, but back in the 80's he was pretty good
Shut up before I make world war 2 seem like a tea party.
Even James said back in the 80’s Lars was a bit shit
@@josephhutchins8 When did he say that?
Lucas420 check the documentary “When Metallica Ruled the World” you can find it on TH-cam.
So much in fact that he reportedly becomes a bizarre drunken mess, prone to inappropriate comments and uncomfortable behavior.
he's clearly a very sociable person. tell us more!
i have heard the same thing about him..
In vino veritas as the old Latin saying goes.
I find it ironic, because let's face it, he does kinda suck now. Totally different drummer than he used to be. Seems like it's difficult for him to execute fairly simple beats alot of the time. But perhaps his partying is one reason why he sucks now.
This definitely makes sense because Kirk and James both had substance abuse problems. So them not going out and partying is probably for the best.
I've always loved Lars's passion for playing music and Metallica.

Lol
Put Neil Peart in ANY band, and that band will sound better.
***** Exactly.
Jack Frost Bull shit. It's about energy as much as skill. Bands are about friendship, enthusiasm more than skill. Neil Peart in RHCP? Nope. John Bonham is better than him any every way any way.
lars used to be amazing until 1993. after that he sucked ass
Play music just to play music.
Don't play for any other reason.
That's the purest motivation.
Lars is very wise.
FOR GOD SAKE... HE'S THE FOUNDER OF METALLICA

Long time Metallica fan but I'm still trying to figure out why people give Lars shit? (Legit question)
Anthony Stark thanks! I never understood the whole case but I think he's still pretty good for his age especially in the new album
Ayy Lmao and most often he can’t keep rhythm but you can hardly tell. And the whole st anger album
Because you have a lot of people on TH-cam rhat can’t play drums but they’re “experts”. And some were sore because he spoke up about them stealing his music. But I bet if you were to steal something of theirs they’d have a much less cavalier attitude about it.
You have to be a tool to get upset with the man for not allowing you to steal from him. Or giving a fuck if he’s eating.
The whole band is extremely talented. Pretty much never heard anyone miss a beat.

Mr. Ulrich - the rhythm in the Metallica machine :) He plays with a lot of feeling and energy which I feel is important for a drummer. He's also always been hands on with the band, working hard to make sure one good album after the next is written, performed and produced for all of us - their loyal fans :D

Enter Sandman was altered by Mr Ulrich in order to become tha legend it is today....the drum change on the song and Justice for all is a real book of inspiration and the space that Ulrich gives to the bass during heir career is endless.

What a humble guy.
I never trust a man who doesn't use a ride cymbal.
Searching through most of the discography, I've managed to find 3 songs where the ride cymbal is used. Hit the Lights, No Remorse, and Fight Fire With Fire
He uses a lot of ride on Load and Relaod. Hero of the day, until it sleeps, bleed, memory remains, etc.
+NuncFluens hmm, I didn't know that. I'll check it out
+RemakeJake ride the lightning chorus
+RemakeJake A lot in Kill Em All and Ride the Lightning. In Disposable Heroes on Master (maybe in Orion, too). I don't think anytime in Justice or Metallica. A lot in soft parts of Load. Not as much in Reload. Mainly used the china in place of the ride in St. Anger.
You guys are still relevant Lars, more so than a lot of new bands that come and go. Hardwired was a killer album, and already has inspired new guitarists to write killer riffs in inspiration of it. I should know, I’m one of em
