Back in 2002, when I was 12 years old, I went on the internet (which was quite costly back then and I was allowed 10 minutes per week), printed out a bunch of Dylan and Beatles lyrics, took my dad's dictionary and tried to translate them into German so I'd be able to truly grasp the meaning.
Needles to say, I was fascinated with Dylan and I cried when I saw him play "Mr. Tambourine Man" live on stage as it brought back so many memories of this girl desperately trying to understand the genius of Bob Dylan. He's the reason I started to write, why I wanted to be an artist.
And he's also the reason I learned that poetry touches you, even if you don't fully understand what is being said.

Someone else noted secret of Carson's remarkable renditions of so many classics (besides his beautiful voice): Carson really sings the lyrics. He's telling the story of the song, with his voice.
A lot of singers concentrate on the notes, with the lyrics just something for the voice to be doing while making the sounds.
    Carson does both.

I agree; loved the sly smile & wink. Wonderful cover. So don't get on my case when - just for the record - I point out that the original Dylan lyric is:
"And the ancient empty street’s too dead for dreaming", not 'city streets'. And (a lesser point) "
Then take me disappearin’ through the smoke rings of my mind
Down the foggy ruins of time", not 'down the smoke rings of my mind...'

One of my few remaining early memories was at age 5 when I was playing in my back yard in a sleepy Simi Valley. I could hear in the house my big sister playing a brand new song "Like a Rolling Stone" on the turntable. I can still remember the pleasant feeling that song gave me even though I didn't understand a single word in the lyrics. That old house is gone now, my mom, my dad, just about everything from then is gone except my sister, me and Bob Dylan. Thanks for keeping things alive, Carson.

If people don't get what a genius this guy is there is no hope for them. Seriously though it's hard to explain or express just how good this is. Not just a great cover. It's artistry and the embodiment of the meaning of the song and the lyrics and yes it pays homage to Dylan but Carson doesn't need to be anyone but himself.

I saw the title of this and was all ready to pounce on this cover with assorted pre-composed cutting critiques. "How dare you take on this classic from the early 60s without knowing the context underneath," I thought. But, upon listening, I found the vocal to be quite pleasing with enough twists and turns to tap my feet happily throughout.

First time I ever got high (not drunk-dizzy-dumb-disoriented high, but floating high) was in the summer of 1965. A kid from New York City (or so he claimed) moved to my rural Florida neighborhood. He said come over and listen to a new record. The album was Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home, the first track of which was Mr. Tambourine Man. As the words -- so many words -- tumbled-jumbled-rumbled on and on, I felt my accustomed fear-based tightness loosen up and slip away. Note: My poor father was a recreational kid-beater, and I was his favorite target, hence the fear. "To dance beneath the diamond-sky, with one hand waving free, silhouetted by the sea . . . let me forget about today until tomorrow." I couldn't make sense of what he was singing about, but it sounded better than what I could make sense about. A new possibility arose in my cringe-constrained little mind; There might be more to life than simply trying to postpone the next beating. Hey, I'm not the biggest Dylan fan. Some of his songs are forgettable, a few lamentable -- but Mr. Tambourine got me high, woke me up. Thanks, Bob.

    • @elijaheskin1
      @elijaheskin1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with you that it's more pleasing to the ear but Bob Dylans version is still way better. Singing isn't only about creating something that sounds pleasing to the ear. I hate it when people say that they like Dylans words but they don't like how he sings. A huge part of what makes Dylan so great is his delivery of the words that writes. He makes them sound realistic and believable, occasionally aggressive and intense as any good storyteller would. The way Dylan sings pulls you into the story and it makes you wanna know what he's talking about. Listen to the Dylan version again and pay attention to the way his singing gives the song life with his amazing delivery. Good delivery is more valuable than a pleasant voice. I actually think that if Dylan sung with a nice pleasant soft voice it would take away allot of the life in his songs, they would feel more two dimensional and be less relatable.

I always say he has some kind of magic in his singing. When he sings, everyone listens as a lecture. Carson is amazing.

I'm listening to Dylan songs since I was 15, now I'm 63, and somehow Mr. Tambourine Man is not easy to sing, but you do it with your special tenderness, I like it a lot... By the way, following you up from your first recording "Wagon Wheel", think, at that time, you were about 15 years old.

I come back to this one, Carson because it takes a special sensitivity to sing melodically repetitive, poetic Dylan and you have it. When there are thirteen versus to something you need to be able to convey the light and shade, rise and fall, that peculiar Dylan habit of marking time occasionally (or we could imagine he's making up the next line sometimes) and counterpoint and you nail it. Thanks for a great rendition of a similarly great tune.

Thank you Carson for that's the first time I've ever heard and understood the lyrics to that familiar classic !!
I don't know how but you reach a higher level of excellence with each video.
And with that 12 strings bright rich tone......
    Brilliant 👍👍
