    I saw Dylan when he went electric at the Newport Folk Festival 1965 in Rhode Island.
    Our house was so close it was like a free concert with the sound echoing off our back
    wall. I remember the boo's from the crowd Bob had Fender Stratocaster.He played a

    Carson- I have listened to literally dozens of covers of this song. Many, many of them are absolutely unlistenable, and many are by singers trying to emulate Dylan, which is a shame, because, as this video shows, it's a very melodic song if given a chance. Yours is EASILY the finest cover of this beautiful, touching song. You have a fine voice, which is evident on many of the covers I've seen with you and Josh.

    It's like the guitar doesn't want to let go of the haunting melody with that final coda! Some unwelcome jarring on the open E-string sometimes - apart from that, perfect, marvellous, I never would have thought a Dylan cover could work for me but yes as others have said, this beautiful version does indeed bring out nuances which the Bobster himself could not. Thank you Carson!

    • @carsonmckeemusic

      Ryan Taylor I basically never pre-record audio...one, because I feel it would undermine the “you’re sitting here listening to me play” immediacy I like about my videos, and two, because it’s honestly harder to nail than just doing the damn thing live, especially if I’m just working with vox and guitar, hah! But seriously, I don’t blame you for thinking so-some aspects, like reverb and such, obviously don’t match the outdoor setting, but I’m a sucker for plate verb, so I included it anyway. There are also tricky tracks like “Take It Easy”, where I’m playing a G shape, but tuned down, so that it sounds like an E or something, and instances where I’ve dubbed in, like, one chord to mask a major flub (meaning there might be a half-second where my playing doesn’t match the video). But still-it’s pretty dang live if I can help it.

    This is a beautiful performance. I especially like the moment at 2:08 where Carson uses the "stop" in the lyric as a break-down moment and then calmly scratches himself until it's time to start playing again. Such calm! I've watched it a 100 times trying to cover Carson here. For the guitar players, here's what I think is happening: everything's tuned down 1/2 a step and then the following chord progression: E - E - Emaj7 - Emaj7 - E7 - E7 - Asus2 - Asus2 - Amin-add2 - Amin-add2 - | E - Emaj7 | - F#min7 - E -F#min7.

    • @LanceHuffmanAz
      @LanceHuffmanAz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I really appreciate you posting this. I have been trying to figure this out myself. I figured it had to be alternative tuning somehow, but I couldn't get a handle on it. Also, I'm not sure why it matters, as it would be difficult to do the song this much justice. But that's the effect these guys have on me - they make me want to practice and try to emulate just a fraction of their talent.

      You obviously know the guitar, so I wanted to ask this question, which may sound stupid but I don't know anything about the instrument and It's always bugged me.
      When guitarists are pressing the strings on the neck of the guitar to change the chords, sometimes their hand will be near the tuning pegs and sometimes near the
      sound hole depending on what chord is needed. Sometimes they need to change the chords rapidly from one end to the other which results in a squeak when the fingers slide along the length of the strings. Can't anything be done about this? That squeak sounds horrible and to me, ruins the tune.

    • @jakejones2818
      @jakejones2818 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@donmiller2908 Man this is part of the character of a guitar, all these casual peripheral sounds from the instrument. In pop music nowadays they'll often be edited out but in my opinion it's a sweet part of the whole, physical expression of playing a guitar. Learn to love these quirks and chance squeals from her.

    • @raindog2262
      @raindog2262 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@donmiller2908 Also as you become more practiced on the guitar, you'll find the squeaks hopefully diminish because your hand speed will increase enough so that rather than slid into or out of a chord shape, you'll come straight off the neck and then straight down. Well, that's the plan anyway. Takes practice but it can be done.

    I will join the chorus here and say that I'm 78 and have been a fan of Bob Dylan for I guess 50 years I'd like some of the other people who commented I don't usually like covers of his song but yours is really excellent I cover some of Bob Dylan songs myself on TH-cam but not this one because I haven't been able to figure out the chord sequence carry on young man and if music is your passion never let it slip away or one day you'll regret that just as I do

      72 here. I like Nora Jones' cover of "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight". I learned it on guitar, 3 finger, and try to emulate Nora's piano playing. When I play at an open mic I always throw out the question "Anyone know who wrote this song?" Every once in a while someone knows, but not often. Like you, I've toyed with learning 'Twist of Fate' and now that I have heard this I think I'll go ahead and do it. Can't sing it in E though. Will have to drop it down to D but won't use drop D if I can't make those beautiful chords that Carson made. I might have to tune down the guitar

    This is one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs, maybe in the top 10 or top 5. I love the teen Carson version and of course all the Dylan ones. But in this version Carson captured the poetry and deep delicacy of the lyrics like no one else. The drama of encounter and loss. Chance. The pain and the delight. Whenever I want to listen to Simple Twist of Fate I look for this page. Carson, you're a great singer not only because of technique, but because you understand, feel and sing the poems. Greetings from Brazil

    That was great, man! The "vocal character" sure is prominent. If I didn't know of this song I would believe that it were your own. The sudden halt after the word "stopped" was so clever as was the gloomy drop on the word "anywhere" in the line "He didn't see her anywhere..". This is awe inspiring. Thanks for this video! You're doing something special

    I am currently learning this tune in open D capo 2. I came across it yesterday for the first time and dropped everything including the tuning to learn it.
    Bob Dylan from my generation shook the world with his honesty and poetry .
