  • Sp00ky season is probably my favorite season, so I'd be remiss to let it pass by without sharing an appropriately spooky song. Stan Jones wrote it, Burl Ives covered it, Bing Crosby, Vaughn Monroe...but Johnny's version is arguably the best-known today. Huge thanks to Josh for not only appearing in this video, but for suggesting the full-band approach, talking me down from my anxieties re: recording drums AFTER the guitar and vox take, and providing clutch mixing help when all the low-mid-frequency-heavy instruments started getting the best of me. This video truly wouldn't exist without him.
Special thanks as well to my Patreon patrons who allow me the opportunity to celebrate Halloween as part of my job, and to AVID for the sonic MVP of some of my latest recordings, the Carbon.

Besides your awesome musical talents, you two always have such great production values. But this really stands out, with Carson’s vocals sounding so incredible. Josh’s expression playing guitar looks he’s mad cuz because he thought it was NEXT Saturday morning when they were gonna record “Ghost Riders In The Sky”, so he stayed out late last night partying and planned on sleeping in and watching football games all day.
Then Carson came in and woke him up: “Hey buddy! Shakey, shakey! Time to wakey!”
Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! Leave me alone!”, and pulled the sheets back over his head.
Carson was like, “C’mon buddy! It’s time to record Ghost Riders In The Sky!”
Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! That’s NEXT Saturday!”
Carson said, “Sorry buddy, it’s THIS Saturday. It’s today!”
So Josh got out of bed and went in the bathroom to wash his face, brush his teeth and comb his hair, and couldn’t find his comb.
    “Dammit Carson!”, Josh said,
Carson knew what Josh was yelling about, and said, “Ohhhh...sorry buddy, I borrowed your comb this morning.”
And Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! Stop taking my combs!”
So then Josh went to the kitchen and was gonna grab a quick bite to eat. He looked in the pantry and saw an empty PopTart wrapper. He was furious! Josh turned around and saw Carson standing there with a shit eating grin.
Josh was like, “DAMMIT CARSON! Stop eating my PopTarts!”
He grabbed the PopTart box...it was empty. “Dammit Carson! That was my last PopTart!”
    Carson was like, “Ohhhh...sorry buddy....”
So Josh was like, “Dammit Carson! I’m hung over. I’m sleepy. I’m hungry. I’m out of PopTarts. I need a new comb. And my breath stinks. Can we just play the damn song already?”
    Carson was like, “Sure buddy...”
Josh was like, “And I’m not gonna be happy at you today, CARSON! I’m not even gonna smile!”
Then Reina came in and said, “Dammit Josh! Thanks for eating the last PopTart!”
At which time Carson said, “Ghost Riders In The Sky...take one...”
    “Dammit Carson!”

"Good lord, what now? I reckon I'm a-ridin', an' purdy durn fast, too!" Pete became aware of something like thunder, only it was all around him. A kind of fog lifted from his sight, and he realized he wasn't just riding, he was herding! Or, at least trying to, as the herd was way out there in front, keeping well out of reach of him, and.... his fellow riders? Somehow, Pete managed to stay in the saddle through all these revelations. Although, as fast as his mount was galloping, more of his weight was on his feet in the stirrups, his knees gripping a stallion as big as a draft horse, and the passing landscape seeming like something out of a dream. But, it wasn't so much a landscape as a... what? There was land sure enough, and plenty of it, but the perspective was all wrong. Then his eyes sort of reset, and he realized he wasn't so much as passing _through_ the landscape, as _above_ it! This amazing, headlong, barely-under-control careening was up among the clouds!
Looking over to his left, Pete could make out a familiar face. Was that Bill on one of these unbelievable horses? Riding skills, long burned into his muscle memory, took over and through a combination of nudging with his knees and working the split-reins of as rich and polished a tack as he had ever gripped (coal black, it was, with red painted accents worked into it), Pete guided the impossible horse over to his left. "Bill! Hey Bill, is 'at you?! Bill!"
A terrified face, pale, dirty, sweating, turned toward Pete. "Pete! Wh-whut are we a-doin' here?"
"I don't know." Then, after a pause, Pete bawled out incredulously, "I thought yew wuz dead!"
Bill appeared to think this over, then said, "I know'd yew was dead! I put at least 3 right in the middle of yore chest! In that saloon, on the edge of San Antone!"
"Right after I tossed my big ol' Bowie knife in-ta the middle of your'n! The last thing I remember before I blacked out was you yellin' you was a-takin' me with ya!" recalled Pete. But he saw he'd lost his companion's attention, whose gaze was now locked onto the head of Pete's horse.
"Pete, that there horse just snorted fire!" A fact that Pete could readily believe, as he had just seen the same behavior out of Bill's horse.
"I don't think we're in San Antone anymore, Bill! An' what's up with that herd out in front? I ain't never see'd no cattle sech as that! An' I don't know how I know, but I think we's a-spos'ed ta catch 'em!"
"How long we been at this?" wondered Bill aloud. But both riders seemed to know the answer -- years, decades maybe, as remnants, distant memories of this same conversation at last started drifting into their shattered minds, over and over, cutting, shredding its way into their bleeding consciousness, a fresh hell each time the realizations and memories were visited upon them. Always and forevermore on the same unending, exhausting, disheartening cattle drive!
"All I know", answered Pete, "is I'm plumb wore out!" Then, "I reckon this is our punishment, since we done kilt each other! Why'd you have ta cheat at that last hand, anyways?"
"Cheat?! yelled Bill. "That there was the luckiest hand I was ever dealt! You never could stand ta lose, ya dumb ol' cowboy! Well, you've lost this one, ain't ya? Lost this one forever, ya durn fool!"
Just then, the herd made a sweeping left turn, and headed up into a kind of canyon in the clouds. As Pete was working out in his head how they might cut them off, he noticed his path led past the top of a tall butte up ahead on the right, where a cowboy, a _live_ one by the looks of him, sat disbelieving, mouth hanging open, on a pretty bay mare. A reg'lar one, too, not so much as a spark coming from her nostrils. "Cowboy!" Pete called out.
Bill couldn't hear what followed, as Pete's voice was drowned out by another peal of thunder off to their left. Or was it the hoofbeats of the other poor souls riding along with them, innumerable, wailing, damned. "What'd you say ta that feller, Pete?" Bill shouted.
"Told 'im ta change his ways or he'd end up a-ridin' with us! Mebbe it'll do him some good. An' mebbe tellin' 'im'll do me some good! Can't hurt, I reckon!" Then clucking his tongue and flicking his reins back at his mount's flanks, and with a good kick in its sides t'boot, Pete yelled out to the horse, "Alright you hellion, let's see if this is all you got! Hyaaaahhh!"

I always thought what a perfect representation of hell this was. You're a cowboy, bringing in a herd to round-up can be a rough part of a rough job anyway, and you're given the devil's herd of demon cows to catch, and they will not be caught, and you can never ever stop trying until you do catch them, but you never can! 'Cowboy, change your ways today, or with us you will ride' indeed!
And you guys really did justice to an old favorite, which I guess is why I talked here more about the story than the performance -- your excellent performance told the story, made it believable, celebrated it and not yourselves. Which is all anyone can hope for from a good performance.
    In short, nailed it!

Holy cow! I've never liked Johnny Cash, and I have to admit that even at the beginning of this track my eyes rolled "Oh great, a kitschy cowboy track. What a laugh." But dang, such a cool song and well done! This will never be my *favorite* set of emotions associated with music, but I begin to understand the appeal: the mystery, the adventure, the drama. And that warbling strummed chord is such a cool sound. I'm just happy to have seen this, because it really *added* something to my ability to appreciate a new (to me) kind of music. Thanks!

Carson, I really like your voice. Good song to showcase it. I really like the line that Josh is playing. I imagined that very line when I was in my 20's, but I could never play it. good job !!

I'm in my fifties and love all of these types of spaghetti western tunes.
I really appreciate that a few of the younger generation also appreciate classics like this.
There is hope for this woke world yet.
    Thanks fellas !

I sometimes think the cover band experience transcends the original as all are celebrating the achievements.
This is the best one I've heard but you are standing on broad shoulders.

That was brilliant! You covered it all. The bass vocals, the storyline intensity, the waa waa strum..and the eerie whistle.. that was sooooo cool. It's all in the execution and you executed! Thanks for doing this song! Rock on! 🤟
