      Is not a bad project to tackle yourself. Dim display is free if you know anybody with a soldering iron. If you don't have prior experience soldering, just don't be heavy handed and you won't mess anything up. If you decide to do it yourself, feel free to message me on IG if you need any help. Thanks for watching.

    Hi Dave, thank you for the video. I ordered the bulbs and soldering gun and have never done any soldering. I was a little nervous, but I went through the video and followed along and now everything works perfectly. I bought a 2004 C5 new in 2005. This display hasn't been readable for about 12 years. Now I can ready everything. Thanks for helping out this 62 year old accountant!

      I'm glad the video gave you enough confidence to tackle this on your own. As you know first hand, it really isn't that hard to do. Sucks that you were stuck for 12 years, but you should be good for many years to come. Thanks for the kind words and enjoy the climate control on the vette.

    Bought my 01 coupe less than a week ago and this was one of the stated issues with the my car in the ad. I believe the previous owner sold this car to me for less money because of this. He probably priced it out at a dealer and decided to live with it. This was super easy to fix with your very precise video. Appreciate your efforts to save everyone with this problem time and money.

    It worked!!! Soldered the 8 resistors and bingo - we have light! Unfortunately, I had to have the Chevy dealer removed the center plastic console piece after 2 of my failed attempts. But I did learn the secret. The painted emblematic plastic piece in between & behind the 2 seats has to be loosened first and then removed while holding the convertible top erect inside the trunk.
    Thanks for your insight. It was great to learn new things about our 2004 Vette named "Lola" and save a bunch of $$ as well. Frank

    Thanks for taking the time to post this! Exactly what was wrong! Three resistors were not soldered. For some victims out there, may I add this?.. On mine, heating the solder tab did not succeed. That is because the circuit board solder point was not tinned. I just let them fall off when heating the good side, then tinned the board solder point, then sweated the resistors back on.

    Had my 2002 convertible apart to fix emergency brake handle not clicking and holding. I was lucky that mine failed due to moisture / corrosion. Not caused by problems i have seen on youtube. PB Blaster was able to free up my internal parts. So , i came across your video and said to myself., while every thing apart why not try the fix my HVAC lights.. i have a solder iron , so thanks to you , i knew what bulbs to order, the size solder, and what type of solder sucker to buy. Yesterday i removed the 14 bulbs , today the bulbs , which were last to arrive , came, and i did it without destroying the functionality of the HVAC. Just came in from the dark to check it out. and had 100% success. All 14 bulbs are working. And it hadn't rained wednesday or thursday and i was able to install new rotors and ceramic pads . Flushed the brake lines and the clutch . I don;t drive my car hard at all. New brakes weren't needed. i just turned 74,000. But since the grass hasn't started growing ,it is a good time to do some maintenance. I bought BRAKE MOTIVE for all 4 corners. i don't race , i wouldn't think of comparing them to $2000 sets, but for zinc coated , slotted and drilled, and less than $150.00 ,free shipping in two days, no sales tax. they will work for my driving habits. NOTE 21mm bolts have locktite red and at 125 foot pounds - have a 4 pound hammer. And i could re-tighten only to 80 lbs. I work outside on the yard. with floor jack. very limited clearance to use cheater bar.
    THANKS FOR A GREAT VIDEO, TIM

    Well, I'll be damned.... This worked like a charm. Today I pulled the unit out of my '03 Z06 and floated the solder (didn't have to apply any additional; just heated the exisiting solder til it flowed) and now I have normal illumination. Thank you ever so much. Gotta love a zero cost fix. I'm not bothering with the LED replacement bulbs. I've found that replacing the factory bulbs with LEDs creates a lot iof bloom...to the point adjacent indicators are illuminated due to the "bleed over." The car was designed with the factory in candescent bulbs, not LEDs. The factory bulbs last for years and years...Why bother replacing them... The current draw is negligeable, so not worth the bother, IMHO.

    Soldering seems to fix a lot of problems on the C5 ... I've had to solder my EBCM, my key fob and I'll be doing this in the next few months. Makes you wonder who was in charge of the solder department during the late 90s. Lol.

    • @YellowVette04
      @YellowVette04  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol I know. Not sure why the soldering joints go bad except that the solder was either not good or not enough was used. For these, I think the solder was just too thin and over time the joints would crack. Nonetheless, it's still a stupid issue that could have been avoided. If you have any issues with it, just let me know but you seem like you'll be good to go.

      @@YellowVette04 So just as an update, I soldered the 8 resistors and everything works. However, the layout of the resistors was very different than yours. My idea for simply "re-flowing" the solder, instead of applying addition, didn't work. The quality and quantity of the solder is so poor that simply trying to re-flow lead to the resistors coming of completely. While I had it open, I also re-soldered some of the other components, for good measure. Thanks again for the video

      I can't seem to find it at the moment but I found an article back when I was deciding between replacing with factory incandescent or LED that explained everything. This particular article indicated different resistors depending on the color of LED. In the end, I decided on incandescent for simplicity and factory lighting during night time driving. The LEDs do look nice, so it's personal preference. I'll reply with a link if I come across it.

And hitting the on and off button does nothing. But even hitting off button the display should display the temp inside the car. So it's a power issue. It will pop back on when it wants to. Then off again. Could be minutes or hours. Any ideas? For me.
