    This video was a great help and I enjoy all of the Toys 4 Life videos. My issue was a little different as I needed to replace cracked climate control buttons. One thing to note, my C5 is a convertible and I had to remove the waterfall to get the console to slide backwards enough to get the main trim piece out of the way. Thank you Toys 4 Life

    It worked! I had the exact same problem in my C5, and this was the first video a Google search spat out. I was skeptical at first, but soldering those resistors made the display come alive again! Thank you, this saved me a whole bunch of money!

    Thanks for this how-to. Mine was getting dim and with sunglasses on I could barely see it. Just fixed mine this afternoon and it looks new again.
    Two tips I'd like to add.
    1. The little rectangle things can slide around. So I held them down with a pick while soldering.
    2. Since the interior temp grille is off its a good time to use a little electrical contact cleaner and a Q-tip to gently clean it.

    Those in fact are resistors, I think they call them surface mount. I needed one of those in a particular value to replace one that went open on an audio mixing console, causing a dead channel output. I had to buy several hundred of them sold in bulk on a reel of this plastic strip that looks like old super 8 film except it's white. The reel is made to load into automated equipment. It was about 25 bucks for the whole reel. They were tiny, smaller than what you had there, but look the same. The reason why I didn't just replace it with a conventional resistor is there was no room for one on the board, so I needed an exact replacement.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting - where did you buy them from?

    • @onemoremisfit
      @onemoremisfit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Toys4Life I just looked at the reel, I misremembered the quantity, it is 5000 of them on the reel I bought to get just one. These types of components are called flat chip resistors. The ones I have are tiny, about 2x the size of a pinhead, but look exactly the same as what you had: flat, rectangular with a strip of tinned metal on each end. I can't remember where I got them, it was over 15 years ago. I remember I searched online for 120 ohm chip resistor and came up with a vendor who would sell a qty of 5000. Nobody sells them a few at a time, only bulk, and buying one 5000 count reel is considered retail. These components are made to be assembled by automated equipment on miniaturized circuit boards. The spot on the board I had was so tiny that I needed an exact replacement to fit. I let my brother solder it in for me because he was under 40 at the time and still had eyes that didn't need reading glasses to focus.

    Great walkthrough! I just followed along and completed this over the weekend and the display is SO BRIGHT now! I have essentially no soldering skill.. seriously, bad enough to where I actually caused two of the little black resistors to completely come loose off of the board and I had to solder them back on.. and even so, I was able to get this done and it works great now. HELP HELP HELP! My C5 display dims intermittently. But the blower and AC do not work either! All of these HVAC re-soldering fixes I've seen on youtube only deal with a dim display. Could this old cracked solder on those 8 resistors be causing my blower and AC not to work too? I need this fixed. It's hot out here on the east coast! I'm going to go through and replace all the AC related fuses next before I take the darn center console apart.

    • @Toys4Life
      @Toys4Life  ปีที่แล้ว

      Check the fuses with a test light - no need to replace. Just check for power at both pins on the fuse. If you can solder fairly well with a small tip, look over all the connections with a magnifying glass- you can see the cracks. These units are spendy - so if you are not confident - find a friend who is - or send it in.
