    Dude!! Love your content. Love your energy. I own a 2001 as well and did this fix after years of waiting for someone on Corvette Forum to post it! The ONLY issue I see here is that you bridged the resistors with the globs of solder in the middle. It's apparently working, but if you ever develop an issue, it *could* be tied to this. By bridging I mean there used to be space between the connections and you've joined them now. I would recommend (not necessary, but to be on the safe side) you get a solder sucker and keep the connections separate. Thinner solder would be ideal on this, for those who have plans to do this in the future! Good luck and keep the content coming!!

  • @ffas23
    @ffas23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Usually a fix like that should be done on the opposite side of the circuit board and the majority of the time you don’t need more solder if you are not changing any parts. Just locate the parts on the other side and touch each soldering joint with the tip of your well heated soldering gun which will reheat a cold solder joint to liquid and then re-cooling would of fixed any loose solder joint. Thank God for Electric Shop back in High School during the mid 60’s. They did away with those shop classes today. Not knocking you being it worked for you but anyone knowing electronics will tell you the same thing. Still another good video nonetheless.

      @djernairchecks ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are surface mounted parts with the solder pad on top with the resistor, what the video shows is how its correctly done, these are not thru-hole components

    • @ffas23
      @ffas23 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djernairchecks Based on what I see on the Circuit Board soldering is required on the opposite side of the Circuity board. I don't like how it was done here. Its kind of Sloppy but happy it worked for him. Did you see he checked the solder on the opposite side to see if it was loose there also? Now its sloppy there with a over abundance of Solder on both sides. A simple touch of the soldering iron at those joints would of heated any cracked solder and made it whole again. I have done a lot of repairs on circuit boards over the years. I believe I know what I am looking at.

      @@ffas23 these are not through mounted components, I’m literally looking at mine in my hands. Surface mounted only and need repaired exactly as shown

    • @dixondanver2548

      I have fixed hundreds of gm clusters and climate controls . I can assure you these are surface mount resistors . At least 90 percent of all modern electronics are the surface mounts . The board is basically screen printed with a solder paste then a robot places the components on the board at a Mach three pace . After all components are in place the board is baked . They did not use enough solder paste and the components start falling off the board . The correct solder and some flux make for a lot cleaner job .

  • @rbdunn
    @rbdunn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ok then,
    I am watching your Drivehub channel because of the C5 corvette. I am looking for one like yours. The fix for the circuit board is a common repair for circuit boards and is usually done on motherboards in desktops and laptops. It is commonly called “floating the board” and is done with a slightly dampened paper towel and a clothing iron. You can place the towel on the circuit board and run the iron over it for a bit until you figured the old solder has floated a bit and you’re done. I much prefer this to buying a new board. I don’t like lay another layer of solder over the old and causing more impedance to the circuit.
    But nice to see it worked...

  • @YellowVette04

    Nice job. Little bit of solder goes along way. Don't be heavy handed and it'll be all good. Should hold up better than the stock joints.

  • @GregSr
    @GregSr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The bigger the glob, the better the job. 8-) But, it's hard to argue with success! Thanks for posting. Thumbs up and subscribed.
    I did this repair about a month ago. I took an old 25 watt Radio Shack soldering iron and ground the tip to a sharp point. Then my wife held slight down pressure on each resistor by using a screw driver in the center of each resistor. Before applying the heat, I touched the solder with the iron - just enough to get some on the tip. Then I touched each joint with the iron just enough that the solder re-flowed.
    Here's my mistake: I put the center console back together not knowing the fuel door release switch had come unplugged. Days later, as I was pulling up to the pump after sitting in line at Costco, I pushed the release button and .... nothing! At the time I did not know about the manual release handle. So, I got out of the gas line and went home. Pulled the console out (again) and BINGO, the wires to the fuel door were totally disconnected.

      Scott Berkey Not all the time if soldered on the correct side of the circuit board those globs could of shorted out the rest of the circuit board. He is lucky that by soldering it on the wrong side he didn’t damage the electronic parts from excess heat right on them. At the joint on the opposite side you are less likely to do that but as I mention above no new solder would of been needed in reheating a cold joint that was loose. Usually you can spot a loose joint better on the soldered side.

First of all he soldered on the wrong side of the circuit board. Why didn’t you point that out instead of joking. Did you even know to tell him? Oh I forgot you are a comedian when you need to be and I need to loosen up. Others look for the right guidance here when working on their Corvette.
