I did this exact repair about 5 years ago on my 2003 C5. The display has been working flawlessly ever since.

Thanks for the help. My dad dropped his '04 Corvette this morning at 8:00 AM. By 9:15 AM I had already removed the center console, remove and opened the temperature control unit, soldered the resistors and put everything back together. Worked perfect! Much easier than I anticipated! I only needed a #10 mm, #7 mm, #15 torque, 3/16 nut driver & solder gun to do the entire process. Gotta love TH-cam!

Many Thanks! Got an 02 Z06 and display was fading fast and could only see it at night, and not very good. Took the module out in 5-6 minutes. Showed your video to a local electronics shop and they soldered the resisters and told me that all 8 were literally about to fall out. Now the display is back to factory. 😆😆😆 👍👍👍

That was extremely informative...Mine has been so dim so long & I couldn't find anyone who could help me. All I could get out of anyone was "well that will run you about $400!" And then they would just Laugh in my face! I really appreciate the time & trouble you have gone too.....Thanks a BUNCH!

    Hello from Dan.
    Thank you for posting this.
    I performed this operation today.
    Works as described !.
I can now see my HVAC display !
I could always see it, but often it was very dim.
When I resoldered the resistors, 2 fell off when I applied heat to one side.
That tell me the other side was actually broken lose on the other side.
1999 C5. I'm also replacing my broken shift pointer with a metal one.
    Thanks. Dan kb7uxe

This does work. I did my 2003 a few years ago. Was dim when I purchased the car used in 2008. Not a difficult job, but a little time consuming. I would only suggest that if you do this to your car that you do a little better job with the soldering iron. The point of doing the job yourself is not only to save money, but to insure that the job is done properly.

Dude, thank you so much for making the video. I followed your advice and resoldered the bank of eight resistors. Reinstalled the controller and got a nice bright display once again. Appreciate the effort brother, juts saved me about $500+

The tips to fix the heater control module display worked 100% for me. Visual inspection didn't reveal any problems, but resoldering the 8 little surface mount resistors restored mine to like new condition. However, as he mentions in the video, it is good if you have some electronics experience. You need a tiny soldering pencil and experience with surface mount components. Otherwise it is probably best to just take the control unit out and get it repaired somewhere.

What I would do is I would replace the resistors with through hole parts, mounting them so that there will be less stress on the solder. Although, only if there is enough space to do so. The resistors would be glued somewhere appropriate, and then wired to the pads on the board.
My suspicion is that the resistors run hot, so they create a lot of thermal expansion/contraction stress on the solder.
This has been a problem in many other electronic items.
Also a problem is lead free solder. There are some lead free solders which are good, but some are brittle and will crack easily.

My only suggestion would be to test it BEFORE you put the dash back together. I had to solder twice (because I'm not good with a soldering iron) so I'm glad I was wise enough to test before putting the dash back together. Once again, this video is awesome and every time I start my Corvette, I think of this video and smile because I saved $500.00.

I used an old small soldering gun and ground the tip to a small point. It takes very little solder to fix it and maybe none at all, just heating the circuit should melt the old solder back in place. Yet, I used rosin core solder and it worked perfectly.

    • @carquestions

I will if one comes in needing BUT you should check your car for recalls to see if there is a free repair for the gas tank(they crack on some C5s) - if there is then have them stick in a new sending unit

      @chieftallboy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

My mechanic took mine apart and cleaned it. He thought he fixed it. My thing is. It powers on and everything works great. Then it powers off. And turns back on when it wants to. Could be a minute or hours. Same with when it has power stays on minutes or hours. I washed my vette today. The unit had power for 45 minutes while the car was on. Then I turned the car off went inside the house came back out and started it then bam no power in unit. Turned it off. Started it back up to put in garage the unit had power. Turned car off in garage then back on. Boom no power to unit. The display is bright nothing wrong with display light. Just main power to it. Very frustrating

@@carquestions You're probably right. I'm going to have my shop that services my other vehicles diagnose it. Hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg. If it does I'll put it off till the spring since we're rolling into fall in the Midwest.
