- Jose Luis Perez Mendez, better known as El Primo, is king of breakfast tacos in Austin, TX. He’s been selling street tacos for over 14 years in Austin. He sells chorizo, ham, migas and bean and cheese breakfast tacos as well as traditional carne asada, al pastor and barbacaoa street tacos to his clientele in South Austin.
Jose, who came from Michoacan Mexico 28 years ago to make a living in America, describes working at his father’s butcher shop as a kid and how his childhood built his strong work ethic. Jose shares his humor and his love of the United States, and his customers talk about why it’s hard to find a better breakfast taco than El Primo’s.

zachary chaney Oh I know that, there’s a taco stand of St. John’s ran by this Mexican lady. Her tacos are stupid good and her tortillas are homemade really makes the difference. They are a lot of great taco stands in Austin.

This makes me so happy! My fathers parents also died when he was young. He was the only one of 10 kids who came to the states from Morelia, Michoacán in search of the “American Dream.” He’s always had amazing work ethic and empowered my siblings and I with the sentiments that hard work will take you anywhere. Being a native Austinite circa 1995, I always love seeing places that I've actually casually stopped by on my way to the bus from work on TH-cam. He really is a fun guy who loves to interact with his customers and it helps on the not so good days.
