Beginning with the 992 model year, Porsche will persist in integrating hybrid technology into its range of vehicles, although it is improbable that there will be a fully electric 911.
Within the next six to twelve months, certain 992 911 models that are being updated will offer the choice of electrified powertrains as an optional feature.
Given the historical evidence of cosmetic alterations being made to prototypes, it is probable that the 911 Turbo S will undergo similar revisions. Certain nations, like Germany, which is the home country of Porsche, have a mandatory requirement for testing electric automobiles. As a result, certain prototypes were labeled with a yellow sticker to signify compliance with this requirement.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has discussed the possibility of an electric version of the 911. He clarified that it will not be a plug-in hybrid like the 918 Spyder, but rather incorporate design elements from the 919 Hybrid LMP1 race vehicle. During deceleration, the electric motor generator will serve as the sole means of replenishing the internal combustion engine. The 911 Turbo S hybrid will utilize a 400-volt system instead of the 800-volt system employed by the Taycan, owing to its smaller battery and absence of fast-charging needs.
According to August Achleitner, the former head of the 911 division, in a 2019 interview with Motor Authority, both the Panamera hybrid and the 992-generation 911s utilized an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Consequently, the fusion of the gearbox and electric motor is anticipated to proceed seamlessly.
There are speculations circulating that the forthcoming 911 Turbo, currently undergoing testing, would not use hybrid technology. Nevertheless, the facelift is anticipated to just yield visual enhancements, such as alterations to the exhaust tip and taillight design, a revamped internal design for the headlamps, and a revised front fascia that may incorporate turn signals within the headlights.
The redesigned 911 Turbo S and the new 911 Carrera, potentially featuring a hybrid powertrain option, are expected to be launched either by the end of this year or in the early months of next year. The projected year of availability for this variant in the US market is 2025.
