Is the new Toyota FJ Cruiser from 2025 worth the wait?
In August of last year, Toyota unveiled the 2024 Land Cruiser, a boxy off-road vehicle for a brief time. Perhaps a smaller off-road SUV with a cruiser name, this could be the next FJ Cruiser. Since then, Toyota hasn't said anything regarding the possibility of a smaller Land Cruiser for off-road fans, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
False trademark applications and some interpretations of the text that said Toyota developed the Land Cruiser nameplate into a more well-known brand, akin to what it had done with Crown. There are contradicting accounts regarding this vehicle, though, and there aren't many specifics available. But there's a good chance a new FJ Cruiser, or off-road vehicle of a similar nature, is in the works.
Between 2007 and 2014, Toyota produced the off-road SUV known as the FJ Cruiser in the United States. In most applications, it features a unique white roof and retro style. The 4.0-liter V-6 engine of the FJ produced 239 horsepower between 2007 and 2009, and by the time it reached the end of its existence, it had 260 horsepower. The FJ comes standard with all-wheel drive and Toyota's cutting-edge A-TRAC traction control system, which simulates a locking differential for improved off-road traction. It is available with a five- or six-speed automated manual transmission. Since the FJ became a cult classic and was able to match the Jeep Wrangler in performance, it is difficult to obtain a well-maintained used vehicle at a fair price. For a number of years, there have been rumors that Toyota is going to bring the tough brand back or utilize it as the basis for a new model.
It's uncertain if the upcoming off-road vehicle will go under the "FJ Cruiser" name. It's very feasible, given that the nameplate was removed from the US in 2014. Toyota might, however, employ the term "cruiser" in a different way. The 2021 concept off-road vehicle was called "Compact Cruiser EV." Although a trademark application for the Land Cruiser FJ brand from November 2023 indicates that Toyota intends to maintain the FJ in its lineup, the compact cruiser nameplate might endure. Last year, Toyota's Chief Branding Officer, Simon Humphries, stated that the company aimed to keep the cruiser relevant while making it "more affordable" and "within reach of more people around the world." That's something the little FJ Land Cruiser can assist with. A all electric drivetrain was featured in a December 2021 compact cruiser EV concept, although that appears improbable now that rumors of the automaker having abandoned the project's development surfaced in 2022. According to a different report, the FJ resurrection will make its debut in 2023 with both gasoline and hybrid powertrains. A battery-electric version will follow later, when Toyota withdraws to introduce a new EV in the developing market. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which produces 326 horsepower in the Land Cruiser, is also used in the new Tacoma pickup. Although there are many little engines available to Toyota, the Turbo 2.4 appears like the most likely option to power the next FJ.
